Lynn Nottage is joined by Soo Hugh for a conversation about approaches to adaptation for the screen, improving work-life balance by recentering collaboration, building the writers room for a show that spans several languages, countries, and times, and much more.  Soo Hugh is a writer, showrunner and producer who cut her screenwriting teeth as a staff writer on shows like the AMC crime drama The Killing, the CBS sci-fi series Under the Dome. She then went on to serve as creator and showrunner for ABC's 2015 sci-fi series The Whispers and as the co-showrunner for the first season of the AMC supernatural anthology The Terror. She is currently the showrunner, writer, executive producer, and visionary behind the drama series Pachinko, based on the international bestselling novel of the same name by Min Jin Lee. Told in three languages – Korean, Japanese, and English – Pachinko follows the hopes and dreams of four generations of a Korean immigrant family as they leave their homeland in an indomitable quest to survive and thrive.  Season 1 received the Peabody Entertainment Award, a Critics Choice Television Award for best foreign language series, an Independent Spirit Award for best ensemble cast in a scripted series, a Gotham Award for Breakthrough Series, and was notably elected as one of AFI's TV programs of the year. The series debuted on Apple TV+ in March 2022, and the highly anticipated season two premiered globally last summer. This episode is moderated by Lynn Nottage. Lynn is a screenwriter, playwright and installation artist. She is the first, and remains the only, woman to have won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice – for her plays Sweat and Ruined. As a screenwriter she was a writer and producer on the Netflix series She's Gotta Have It and a consulting producer on the third season of the Apple TV+ series Dickinson. --- Read shownotes, transcripts, and other member interviews: www.onwriting.org/ Follow the Guild on social media: Twitter: @OnWritingWGAE | @WGAEast Facebook: /WGAEast Instagram: @WGAEast

“Sometimes I think [the show Pachinko] is almost too personal. I feel like every show, you look at it and say, ‘How much of myself is in this show?' I did a show [The Whispers] about children who were communicating with an invisible alien force and somehow, I had to figure out how to make it part of me as well. We try to put ourselves in as much of our work as possible. But with this show, the tipping point almost fell in the other direction, where I felt so personally invested. I felt very much like this is my family's story, as well. That responsibility sometimes felt burdensome. So many of the cast and crew have said that there's a responsibility with this show that almost feels too much. But at the end of the day I think it's a thing that made us work harder. I think the show is as good as it is because people cared,” says Pachinko showrunner and creator Soo Hugh about making the story personal to her. In this episode, we speak to Hugh about the challenges of writing a show where characters speak in three languages, making the characters relatable to an American audience, and the responsibility of telling the stories of strong women over generations. “In Korean families, we always have these jokes that everyone knows who's running the house – your mother! I think it's the strength of Korean women that have just carried us through,” she says. We even ask Hugh about her work on one of my favorite shows The Terror, and what she thinks really happened to the real-life British crew on the Terror and Erebus ships that got stuck in the Artic ice. Her answer may surprise you. To hear more, listen to the podcast.

How do you go from Yale and Heidegger to Hollywood and "How many explosions can I fit on a page?" Writer David Loong is here to go over just that and his journey from Philosophy student to member of the 2024 - 2025 NBC TV Writers Program. More about David Loong: David Loong writes genre dramas featuring deep worldbuilding and multicultural, code-switching outsiders. Born in Hong Kong, he attended high school in Oxfordshire, England before getting a B.A. in history from Yale University. After brief career flirtations with consulting, crypto, and underwater archaeology, Loong earned an MFA from USC's Screenwriting Division. He was selected for The Thousand Miles Project, UCP's highly regarded talent incubator. After the program, he signed a deal with UCP to develop an original pilot, “The Englishman,” a boarding school thriller centered around a mysterious and cutthroat school competition, with "Pachinko" showrunner Soo Hugh. Loong is repped by Anonymous Content and IAG.   More about the NBC TV Writers Program: Created in 2005, the NBC TV Writers Program is the company's premier program that develops emerging episodic television writers whose distinct points of view and lived experiences provide unique perspectives to the writers' room. This includes talent from various socio-economic backgrounds, geographic locations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities, the LGBTQ+ community and veterans, among other communities. The program prepares writers to be staffed on scripted series with the long-term goal of developing the next generation of showrunners.   Find us at www.werewatchingwhat.com or instagram.com/werewatchingwhat David Loong can be found at davidloong.me THEDHK can be found at instagram.com/thedhk , twitter.com/thedhk, and facebook.com/thedhkmovies

On this episode of Complicated Conversations, we are chatting with Theresa Kang, the founder and CEO of Blue Marble Pictures and Blue Marble Management and executive producer of Apple TV+ hit series Pachinko.   ** Theresa shares what gave her the bold belief that she could sell this adaptation of Min Jin Lee's novel, a global series told in three languages with an all Asian cast. (01:59)  ** We loved hearing the meaning behind the name of Theresa's company – Blue Marble – and how the pandemic helped her follow her calling. (05:20)  **  There is a true universality to this story, but it was also very personal and specific for Theresa. (07:25) ** Theresa explains how the goal for Pachinko was for it to be a 21st century Thornbirds or akin to the Godfather, a show that families can co-watch together. (12:17)  ** We discuss how Soo Hugh, the showrunner, came up with the brilliant idea to depart from the linear narrative structure of the book to tell this story on screen as a dialogue between the past and the present. (16:04)   ** As executive producer, Theresa faced many production challenges in ultimately presenting a unifying vision for this story. She shares how she managed all her roles to create a beautiful, stunning show with a legendary and fresh cast that blew us away! (17:48)  ** We love a second act and Theresa's story of pivoting from being a partner at WME to creating her own company was inspiring and aspirational. (21:41)  ** Theresa shares what she is looking for in a project and we love these adjectives she used: disruptive, fresh, and original. She explained how she looks to make something that feels foreign more familiar, viewing films and TV shows as empathy agents. (26:14)   ** We were so pleasantly surprised to hear that Theresa and her friends speak the same love language as us: astrology! (28:34)  ** We get Theresa to spill the tea of whether there will be more Pachinko and what else she is working on next. (30:46)  ** What do this podcast, Theresa, and Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl have in common? Listen to find out! (34:30)  ** Does Theresa have a theme song? Listen to hear what she's playing these days. Host Geri Cole is joined by PACHINKO showrunner, writer, and producer Soo Hugh to talk about how the writers adapted the acclaimed novel to keep it focused on family over colonialism; the process of crafting a complex, authentic story that couldn't have been told the same way a decade ago; and the power inherent in telling extraordinary stories of ordinary people. Soo Hugh is a writer and producer whose past credits include sci-fi and horror drama series like CBS sci-fi mystery UNDER THE DOME, ABC sci-fi drama THE WHISPERS (which she created) and AMC horror anthology THE TERROR (for which she was co-showrunner), among others. She is currently serving as creator, writer, showrunner, and producer of the Apple TV period drama PACHINKO. Based on the acclaimed novel by author Min Jin Lee, PACHINKO chronicles the hopes and dreams of four generations of a Korean immigrant family. The story begins with a forbidden love, and crescendos into a sweeping saga that journeys between Korea, Japan, and America to tell an unforgettable story of war, peace, love and loss, triumph and reckoning. With Halloween right around the corner, we felt it's as timely as ever to revisit this episode from earlier this year. Sometimes, the scariest thing is what you don’t see onscreen. It’s a lesson taken to heart by the folks behind two of the best horror projects of the first half of 2018 — the AMC miniseries The Terror and the gigantic hit movie A Quiet Place. In this special horror showcase episode, Todd talks to Soo Hugh and David Kajganich, the showrunners and head writers of The Terror; and then with Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn, the sound designers of A Quiet Place. All four talk about how to build horror unconventionally — The Terror by starting from a real, historical event that didn’t actually involve supernatural interference (though the TV show adds a fearsome creature to chow down on stranded sailors) and A Quiet Place by stripping out almost all spoken dialogue. It’s a great time for horror, and Soo, David, Erik, and Ethan bring unique perspectives to what’s made the genre boom so much and where it might be headed. Learn more about your ad choices.
