Korean drama, or K-drama, is enjoying phenomenal worldwide success. Thanks to video-on-demand streaming - and given a boost by the pandemic - South Korea is now one of the largest content providers in the world. In this edition of The Cultural Frontline actress Min-ha Kim, who stars as Sunja in the adaptation of the best-selling historical novel Pachinko, explores the worldwide impact of K-drama and speaks to writers, actors and producers about how it is evolving. K-drama fans come from all over the world, says Deema Abu Naser who runs the biggest K-drama community on Instagram, @deemalovesdrama. She was recently invited to visit film locations in Korea by Jeanie Chang, who posts about K-drama and mental health as @noonasnoonchi. But will K-drama's new international audience change it for better or worse? Now that many dramas are being shared internationally on streaming platforms, they are changing, says Forbes K-drama critic Joan MacDonald. Squid Game made the world sit up and notice K-dramas - but they were already gaining popularity. Most Korean dramas are made to be watched by the whole family, and that is part of their worldwide appeal. Korean cinema, on the other hand, was always aimed at an adult audience. Korean script writer Hong Eun-mi tells Min-ha that the gap between K-drama and cinema has narrowed - the pandemic led to a slump in the film industry and now many writers and producers are working in K-drama instead. Another Korean innovation, webtoons - comics designed to be read vertically on a smartphone – have become a primary source for K-dramas. Some have millions of fans and are published globally, acting as a sort of barometer for any drama reversion, says Minyoung Alissia Hong, an executive at Korean media company Kakao Entertainment. She saw the potential early on and first suggested turning the webtoon What's wrong with Secretary Kim? into a drama. Itaewon Class soon followed and was a huge success. K-dramas are also being remade in other countries - screenwriter Melis Veziroglu Yilmaz adapts Korean dramas for Turkish TV and says there are many parallels between Turkish and Korean culture. She hopes K-drama will remain family-friendly. Actress and singer Uhm Jung-hwa welcomes the changes. She recently starred in Doctor Cha, a drama about a middle-aged woman who decides to go back and finish her medical training after 20 years of looking after her family. Uhm Jung-hwa says roles for women have become more interesting since she first started out in the ‘90s, and pre-production has also improved the quality of K-dramas. One of our world's most persistent myths is that religion is the enemy of good sex. The idea of Christians as repressed Puritan prudes—as historically inaccurate as that is—still exerts enormous power over our imaginations. The other side of that myth is perpetuated in the glamorous portrayals in movies and TV of sexual liberation juxtaposed alongside frigid marriages. The message is clear: Faith and tradition are shackles that must be shed if we are to enjoy the kind of freedom the sexual revolution promises. But here's the truth: It's a false promise—as false as the idea that religion puts a damper on sex. A sweeping new study by the Institute for Family Studies at Brigham Young University reveals that, in terms of both sexual satisfaction and relationship quality, highly religious couples fare better than the non-religious. In their report, entitled, “The Ties that Bind: Is Faith a Global Force for Good or Ill in the Family?,” the authors looked at data from eleven countries, including the U.S., the U.K., France, Canada, and Argentina. What they found was striking: Highly religious couples “enjoy higher-quality relationships and more sexual satisfaction,” have more children on average, and are far less likely to have cheated on their spouse. The correlation of religion with good relationships was especially pronounced among women. Those in highly religious marriages were fifty percent more likely to report being “strongly satisfied” sexually than their secular and less religious counterparts. And in a relationship quality index that took into account attachment, commitment, satisfaction, and stability, highly religious women whose husbands shared their faith were ahead of every other group. So why are religious couples so doggone smitten? Why is religious devotion, in particular, such a powerful predictor of marital bliss? There are a couple of possible reasons. First, as Bradford Wilcox and Lyman Stone write in The Atlantic, American young adults have been hit by two major recessions: one of happiness and the other of sex. Wilcox and Stone think the two are related. After all, as one Dartmouth study found, having sex at least once a week provides the same happiness boost as a $50,000 raise. To be blunt, married couples get more raises. Contrary to the sitcom portrayals of marriage as the old ball-and-chain, those who say “I do” and stick with it have sex five times more often than their unmarried neighbors. Second, another quirk the IFS report offers is that couples who regularly attend religious services—which overwhelmingly means Christian churches—enjoyed a boost in satisfaction and relationship quality regardless of whether they identified as progressive or traditional. Wilcox and his co-authors theorize that this may have to do with the strong correlation between religious observance and involved, committed fathers. In other words, even religious husbands who think traditional gender roles are outdated still tend to stick around for their wives and kids more often than the less religious or secular. In doing so, they offer a kind of provision that goes well beyond bringing home the bacon. Even more than that, I'd venture that religious commitment—especially Christian commitment—serves as a silent but inescapable reminder of what sex is for. In a time when meaningless encounters are pushed over on an increasingly miserable, lonely populace, religion serves as a signpost to couples that there's meaning to sex beyond their own pleasure, beyond their own bodies. In essence, when they become “one flesh” they participate in God's “very good” created order. Whether I'm right about that or not, David French is certainly right as he observes that “sexual liberation has all too often brought neither sex nor liberation.” The science is clear: If you want a healthy, lasting, and yes—sexually satisfying relationship, go to the altar, and then stay in church.

Something really crazy happened in the world of the WWE this week. But when you think about it, Dolph Zigger would have to be delayed for about another year for his re-package to be anywhere close to Emma's, so maybe it isn't all that crazy after all. AJ checked in from Tampa for Segment 1, where he was preparing for the Redskins' preseason finale. We covered everything there was to cover regarding Cena/Reigns, then also discussed Nia Jax turning on Alexa and Sasha Banks not being able to defend the belt. Then Glenn paid his penance for being the first to lose the botch race. In Segment 2 (27:56) former WWE writer Kevin Eck joined us in studio to offer a writer's perspective on Cena/Reigns. What was scripted and what wasn't? Why are we getting this now? Is anyone a heel or face here? Introducing Dino Dogan His website hails him as a “Global Force for Badassery” and we agree.  Dino is a public speaker, author, blogger, mixed martial artist and recovering network engineer and singer/songwriter.  He is also the founder of Triberr, the social network for bloggers.  Greg met Dino in Las Vegas at the New Media Expo, which is a convention for bloggers, podcasters, and web video.  Greg broke his own rule at conventions when he went to the bar and ordered a drink… by HIMSELF.  Dino quickly came over, introduced himself, and invited Greg to sit with him and his group.  A new connection and friendship was born and soon after Greg was a guest on Dino's “Road to TED” podcast speaking about his then upcoming speech for TEDx New Brunswick. As mentioned above, Dino is the founder of Triberr.  Bloggers join Triberr and are placed into “tribes” according to the type of content they generally write about.  Then bloggers share each other's content on their own blogs.  This allows for more content than they could create alone and helps to build their audience.  This strategy has made for millions of extra hits each month to Triberr blogger sites.  Within days of creating Triberr, Dino was getting requests from brands to promote their products.  That is exactly what he did through the use of influence marketing.
