Tiffany Cabán captured national headlines when she came within a hair’s breadth of winning the primary for district attorney in her hometown of Queens, New York, in 2019. It was an audacious move: a young, out-of-nowhere candidate running in her home borough against the establishment on a platform calling for major changes to the system. Snatching a moral victory from the jaws of electoral defeat, Tiffany kept speaking out. Two years later, she’s just won a seat on the New York City Council, where she will have a voice in the debate about what kind of hometown New York wants to be. In this interview, host Kevin Burke talks with Tiffany about her coming-of-age story and what she experienced back there that made her someone who gets up and chooses to march on the front lines, has the skills to organize – and then has the fire in her soul to throw her whole being into fighting for what she believes in. This is a show about diving down to the first act in the life of a person – in this case, a person who sees something and is moved to do something about it. It’s a search for the people in her life who saw her and did something, and how she learned to stand up for herself and for others. In a larger sense, it’s also about grace—the kind of mercy and compassionate understanding we find ourselves asking for and being asked to give in our lives—and whether that kind of grace, born of experience, can become the foundation for how we relate to each other. Revolutions Per Minute - Radio from the New York City Democratic Socialists of America
Last night, hundreds of people occupied the amphitheatre area in front of the Brooklyn Museum to share stories and collectively mark the anniversary of the murder of George Floyd. At least 15 NYPD vehicles lurked on Eastern Parkway 100 yards away. The police presence included the large vans used to transport people who have been arrested as well as two vans for NYPD’s notorious Strategic Response Group, a “riot control” division which has violently arrested, pepper sprayed, and intimidated anti-racist and anti-fascist protestors consistently over the last year. SRG was established in 2015 and has an estimated yearly budget of $68 million. We know it doesn’t have to be this way. We can change our city for the better by redistributing the massive amount of resources NYPD uses to harass and intimidate New Yorkers and investing that money in healthcare, education, housing, parks, art, and other things that will actually improve our quality of life and keep our communities safe. Tonight on Revolutions per Minute, we hear from DSA-endorsed candidate for City Council District 22 Tiffany Cabán, a long time de-carceral activist, on why she was proud to sign on to DSA’s vision for real public safety and budget justice. We’ll also be taking your calls live with Kay Gabriel, an NYC-DSA member and Defund NYPD organizer. Learn more about Tiffany Cabán and her campaign at www.cabanforqueens.com.Has your City Council candidate signed on to the Real Public Safety pledge? A look at the Lent-Riker-Smith Cemetery, a hidden family graveyard tucked away behind one of the oldest homes in New York City, which is still a private residence. This is part 1 of the history of the little-known Lent-Riker-Smith Homestead and Cemetery. This episode focuses on the history of nearby Riker's Island, as well as the Riker family, and sets the scene for next week's deep dive into the home and cemetery's more recent history, and what they're like now. A look at a small family cemetery dating from the 1600s, tucked into a residential neighborhood in New York City. The Lawrences were an old family from Queens, New York, arriving in the area in the 1600s and buying land all over. Despite the destruction of many family cemeteries in NYC over the centuries, two Lawrence cemeteries have survived, one of which is in an Astoria man's backyard. The cemetery, surrounded by both a stone wall and a chain link fence, is closed to the public, though curious onlookers can peer through its iron gate and see a variety of tombstones, some of which belong to veterans of the Revolutionary war. Highlights include: • Forgotten cemeteries • Accidentally scaring local cemetery owners • A lost shoreline • Inheriting a cemetery Donate to the Emergency Release Fund to get high-risk people out of Rikers: https://emergencyreleasefund.com/ Tiffany Cabán for council district 22 (Astoria): https://www.cabanforqueens.com/ For the shownotes and sources, visit buriedsecretspodcast.com. Public impeachment hearings begin this week. We tell you who’s taking the stand and how to tell them apart using some high-art, elevated cultural touchstones. A public defender supported by the co-founders of Black Lives Matter was elected as San Francisco’s new DA. We talk to former public defender and politician Tiffany Cabán about what it means to be a prosecutor who runs on ending mass incarceration. And in headlines: the women who inspired “Hidden Figures” are honored by Congress, Dion Waiters got too high, and Sesame Street celebrates 50 years of puppets and letters.
Tiffany Cabán started 2019 as a 31-year-old public defender in her native New York City. She knew that the criminal justice system wasn’t working for her clients or for the city. Something had to change, and she decided that she would be the change agent. With encouragement from a small circle of friends and fellow reformers, she entered the race for District Attorney in Queens. There were other candidates running in the Democratic primary, better known candidates with more money and more political connections. But Cabán embraced a movement politics that took its cues from grassroots activists and policy specialists. She declared, "I am a public defender. I have spent my career working for people who did not have resources to defend themselves against the brutal system of mass incarceration. I am running to transform the Queens District Attorney's office after years of witnessing its abuses on the front lines.” Tens of thousands joined in. This movement campaign electrified activists not just in Queens and New York City but across the country. On the primary election night in June, Cabán finished narrowly ahead. An extended recount cost her the nomination. But she has not stopped building the movement to transform a criminal justice system that fails to deliver justice. Fresh off of phone banking for Tiffany Cabán, Coby Owens and Action Anderson take control of the bunker for the first-ever non-RE Vanella hosted episode of Highlands Bunker. It's been 25 days since Queens Democrats went to the polls to pick their nominee for District Attorney, a primary and proxy war that pitted borough president Melinda Katz against the AOC/Sanders/Warren-backed upstart Tiffany Cabán. The borough of over 2 million people wound up with the candidates separated by just 16 votes, sparking an overtime battle being waged at the Board of Elections, in court, and naturally all over social media. Assuming it ever ends, will the losing side accept the result or cry foul? And what does it mean for the establishment vs. far left divide in the Democratic Party? It’s one week after one of the biggest progressive upsets in NYC electoral politics in a generation. Votes are still being counted, but it’s possible that progressives and socialists have propelled Tiffany Cabán to victory and reshaped NY politics and criminal justice for years to come. We’ll talk about the final vote counting process underway right now (and how you can help!), as well as an analysis on what this means for the criminal justice movement, the dwindling Queens Machine, and DSA. If we want to change the criminal justice system from the inside out, we must elect reform-minded district attorney's. Tiffany Cabán, a public defender, is currently running for district attorney in Queens, NY and she is a game changer. If every county and every city could elect a candidate like her, let alone get people like her to run, our criminal justice system would change overnight. On today’s episode of The Breakdown, Shaun tells you about Tiffany Cabán and what he thinks is “the most important election in the country right now.”
NOTE: This is a re-release of my discussion with Chloe Cockburn. At the beginning of the episode, I make the following endorsement of Tiffany Cabán, a candidate for Queens District Attorney: On Tuesday June 25th, Queens will hold an election for District Attorney. The DA is the top prosecutor for Queens, a borough of nearly 2.4 million people. If you are inspired by this episode, I would encourage you to support Tiffany Cabán. Cabán is the only public defender running in the race- the other six candidates are career prosecutors and politicians. She is also the only candidate who is refusing corporate PAC money. The other front-runner, Melinda Katz, has taken over $150,000 from real estate players. Chloe doesn't make endorsements as a matter of policy, but a number of organizations she has directed funding towards have endorsed Caban, including Real Justice PAC, the Working Families Party, and VOCAL New York, a group that organizes formerly incarcerated people. Cabán has also received endorsements from congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, and activists Cynthia Nixon and Zephyr Teachout. This will be a low-turnout election, so each donation, volunteer, and voter will have a big impact on the outcome. Prosecutors are the group most responsible for mass incarceration, but their enormous amount of power and discretion also makes them most able to end it. You can learn more and get involved at www.cabanforqueens.com Chloe Cockburn leads Open Philanthropy's strategic grant-making aimed at ending mass incarceration in the US. Prior to joining Open Phil, she oversaw state policy reform work for the ACLU's Campaign to End Mass Incarceration. Previously, Chloe worked with the Vera Institute and the civil rights law firm of Neufeld, Scheck and Brustin, and clerked for Judge Sifton of the Eastern District of New York. Tiffan Cabán, a career public defender, wants to make sweeping restorative changes to the Queens District Attorney’s office, and has assumed a decisive stance against the decriminalizing of poverty and mass incarceration.
