Raise the roof and get ready to dive into the gaping hell-mouth that was March 9, 1990. This week the boys revisit the Kid 'n Play hip-hop teen-sex comedy, HOUSE PARTY and the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan deep-flop absurdist comedy, JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO. All this and a soiled overcoat on EPISODE 71 of OPENING WEEKEND!“I believe the children are our future, teach them well, and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside.” And who better to teach them and show them that beauty than three middle-aged film-nerds working through their own individual mid-life crises by doing a podcast about wanting to be children again?!That's right, this week Jason, Dan, and Fred take on the assignment of creating a by-request, Very Special Episode for a Long Island High School teacher and his students: complete with F-bombs in the first 60 seconds, sound clips from a disgraced comedian/sex-offender, and tales of lost virginity and soiled over-coats in the backseat of a station-wagon. (Oh, relax, they're 2022 High School seniors, they've seen/heard/done MUCH worse). Oh, and and they ALSO talk about movies! And podcasts! And how to make podcasts about movies! And there are fart sounds, too, children!Joe jumps into a volcano, Kid raps with Play, Jason goes to college, Fred becomes a man, and Dan writes a review about…the new Rosie O'Donnell movie? It's a very Zarzicki episode of Opening Weekend!
It's time to jump into the fiery crater that is the 1990s, and our first step of the journey takes us to the Big Wu and beyond with John Patrick Shanley's existential mid-life crisis rom-com ‘Joe Versus the Volcano'. The first in the unofficial Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan ‘meet cute' trilogy, Joe is a stranger film than its appearance may lead you to believe. We won't be making our voyage to Waponi Woo alone, as we are joined by BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra film critic Ali Plumb for our discussion. So, pack your steamer trunks Ramblin listeners and get ready to make the leap. For this month's episode, long-time listener first-time caller Liz Bailey joins Lisa and Charles Adrian from Cardiff for a wide-ranging discussion about the first film in the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan cinematic universe. Joe Versus The Volcano Year: 1990 Screenplay by: John Patrick Shanley Director: John Patrick Shanley Stars: Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan Show notes: Is this a rom com? In this episode we more or less abandon our search for meet-cutes, obstacles and happy endings in order to zero in on what each of us want from a romantic film that may, like this one, also be very funny. Some of us have also climbed volcanoes in real life. You can find an image of the poster for this film on imdb.com here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099892/ Charles Adrian references the artist L. S. Lowry, who you can read about on Wikipedia here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L._S._Lowry. This week on New Release … volcanologists Ashley, Derrick, and Drew go back to where it all started for the definitive 90s movie couple. Joe Versus the Volcano is the first of three hit rom-coms to star Hanks & Ryan, and it is by far the weirdest. Man, if I had a dime for every— Along the way he meets three different—but all adorable—iterations of Meg Ryan and learns that there may be more to life than selling his soul for the world’s leading supplier of rectal probes. It's the first episode! Shawn and Wes have set out on a mission to go back and really EXPLORE the cinema of the '90s...the movies they loved as kids, the movies they were too young to see at the time, the movies they might one day pass along to their own children. And they're starting at the top of the decade with 1990's Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan philosophical comedy (?) adventure (??) Joe Vs. The Volcano. Movie talk starts at 4:21! Behind-The-Glass "Jingle" Gerry gives a list of "Lesser Known" Christmas Movies that he thinks deserve some attention. So, if you are looking for a festive film, but are tired of the usual suspects like It's A Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34th Street, or even Christmas Vacation, here are a few to take a look at: 1. Christmas in Connecticut (1945) - Barbara Stanwyk starrs as a magazine Columnist who is the "Martha Stewart" of her time. Giving hints and tips to homemakers on how to do things properly. All is well until her editor invites himself and a war veteran to her house for Christmas... the problem? She has no idea how to do any of the things she writes about. 2. The Shop Around The Corner (1940) - Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan star as co-working shop clerks who can not stand one another. What they don't know is that they are each other's secret pen pal... who are about to meet face to face for the first time. Does the plot sound familiar? The Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movie Youv'e Got Mail was based on this classic 3. A Christmas Wish (AKA The Great Rupert) (1950) - Jimmy Durante stars in this film about a down-and-out family who moves into a basement apartment not knowing that a trained squirrel has taken up residence in the walls, and has found some cash hidden there by "bad guys" and starts doling it out to the family. Early stop-motion animation with a stuffed squirrel make this a rare gem. 4. Fred Claus (2007) Vince Vaughn stars as Fred Claus, the underachieving, bitter brother of Nick "Santa" (who is played by Paul Giamatti). Fred has to move back to The North Pole and ends up helping save Christmas... wait... was that a spolier? Honourable Mentions If your tastes lean more towards the horror-side of things, you might want to give "Santa's Slay"(2005) a spin. This Horror/Comedy stars Bill Goldberg as Santa, an evil demon who lost a bet hundreds of years ago and had to deliver joy and presents on Christmas... well the bet is now over... and Santa is ready to return to his evil ways. A great supporting cast includes Robert Culp, Dave Thomas, Emilie De Raven, Saul Rubinek, Fran Drescher & Kris Kattan. If you are more of an action lover, check out some Local Fare with the TBS made for TV movie "Christmas Rush" AKA "Breakaway"(2002). This Die Hard rip-off was filmed right here in Winnipeg and stars Dean Cain and Erika Eleniak along with Eric Roberts and Aleks Paunovic.

This week, Christine makes her triumphant return to THE MILKSHAKE BOOM podcast just in time to discuss the 1990 Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan romantic comedy team up 'Joe Versus the Volcano' written and directed by John Patrick Shanley! We also reveal our favorite movies with 'versus' in the title, jump into some of the best Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan films, and discover that adding Batman will always make things better! Never before or since has a movie been so hopeful, whimsical and yet so full of death and genocide! Also, Meg Ryan gives the performance of a lifetime that you'll have no response for!
Happy Valentine’s Day, lovers! This week, regular guest Julia and Leah Pickett from Consequence of Sound joins us to talk Sleepless in Seattle, the seminal Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan romantic comedy from 1993! This film (about a divorcee who finds himself the talk of female America after a particularly heartfelt radio call-in segment) features Hanks and Ryan at their prime, with some solid comedy as they try to navigate the precarious middle ground between practical relationships and the romantic notion of true love. Still, the movie raises some questions, like “just how creepy is Meg Ryan for stalking a man she doesn’t know?” “Why is the whole of New York City so willing to accommodate a lost kid in his romantic mission?” and “What’s wrong with Bill Pullman, anyway?” All these questions and more are explored below, along with our custom cocktail and drinking rules! (NOTE: This is our first episode with our brand-new setup, so we should sound a bit more profesh! We're still messing with sound levels, however, so be patient with us as we get everything down and get used to the new equipment. If you want to help us with our expensive new equipment, too, be sure to head to the Donate button at the sidebar of each page on the site and help us out! Thanks!)
