It's the finale of this series on the Genpei War (1180-1185); the showdown between the two most powerful clans of the age. This episode is one of the most drama & action packed that I have ever covered in History on Fire. We'll discuss Minamoto Yoritomo's Godzilla-sized ego, the Minamoto killing each other when they are not busy warring against the Taira, the legendary female samurai Tomoe Gozen, a ritual suicide to urge your commander to stop having sex and concentrate on military maneuvers instead, the charge at Ichi No Tani, the mythical fight between Kumagai Naozane and Taira Atsumori, a victory party in Kyoto parading enemy heads, Yoshitsune's utter fearlessness, a feat of archery so amazing that it convinced the enemies to stop battle and cheer for the archer, the child emperor's grandmother drowning herself and her grandson, samurai crabs, Benkei being a pal and holding back an army so that Yoshitsune can kill himself, and much more.

The Genpei War (1180-1185), pitting against one another the two most powerful clans of the era, the Minamoto and the Taira, is one of the most crucial turning points in Japanese history. Movies and video games have usually overlooked this conflict in favor of the civil wars of the warring states period of the 1500s. Big mistake since the story of the Genpei War is packed with drama and larger than life characters—from the tragic hero Minamoto Yoshitsune, his brother in arms the gigantic warrior monk Benkei, the female samurai Tomoe Gozen and many others. And on top of it, this civil conflict ushered major changes in Japanese society, shifting power from a nobility made of imperial bureaucrats into the hands of landowning samurai families. In this first of two episodes dedicated to the Genpei War, we'll tackle one of the most important works in Japanese literature, Buddhist impermanence, the 1156 Hogen Rebellion, the 1160 Heiji Rebellion, revenge, exorcisms, the rise of the Taira family, emperors struggling with loss of power, warrior monks, the battle at the Uji River, announcing your family lineage before cutting heads off, inviting the gods to witness battle, Minamoto Yorimasa's suicide, Yoshitsune learning swordsmanship from the demons of the forest, the duel between Yoshitsune and Benkei, the Taira burning down the monasteries of Nara, Kiyomori's death, and much more.

In this episode, we delve into the fascinating world of onna-bugeisha, the female samurai who defied traditional gender roles in shogunate Japan. Spanning a period from the 1100s to the 1800s, we explore how these formidable women navigated the rigid feudal class system, trained in martial arts, and defended their homes and castles. Learn about legendary figures like Tomoe Gozen, whose prowess in battle was unparalleled, and Takeko Nakano, who led a valiant, albeit tragic, stand against enemy forces. We also uncover the remarkable story of Miyagino and Shinobu, two peasant women who avenged their father's death using the skills they learned from a samurai instructor. Today we’re talking about Tomoe Gozen, a warrior worth a thousand men. Tomoe is known as a leading commander and the first female general of 12th century Japan. She was extremely talented with bow and arrow, long sword, martial arts, and riding horses.  Legend has it that she was “ready to confront a demon or god, mounted or on foot” and that she “performed more deeds of valor than any other warriors.” She fearlessly beheaded the enemies and presented their heads to her commanding officers.  Tomoe Gozen was not just a fearless warrior, but she was also a cunning strategist and inspirational leader. Now in 12th century Japan, it was not entirely unusual for women of the samurai class to be trained in martial arts as well as to use various weapons, but their role was expected to be primarily defensive, protecting themselves and their households in the event of an enemy attack. What made Tomoe stand out was her superior skill and ability to effectively command, as well as holding her own in an offensive role, rather than defensive.  Tomoe Gozen stands out as one of the bravest, boldest, most cunning and fiercest warriors of all time. Her example can help all of us be a little bit braver and to be warriors in our own lives. She also inspires us to be confident and self-assured when it comes to taking on leadership roles, including leading groups of predominantly men. Girls can do anything! Just like Tomoe.

Recently a friend of mine was searching for the feminine version of “Knight”. Something that communicated the noble honor, integration of royalty, with the strength, cunningness and calculation of a warrior. Knighthood came about in the Middle Ages during a time when there was no feminine equivalent for a knight because women were not considered equal to men. I suggested that she look into the Japanese culture, there were female samurai called Onna-Bugeisha. They were intelligent, educated, elite, powerful leaders trained in weaponry the same way men were. They fought alongside the male samurai, strong and independent. Empress Jingu, Tomoe Gozen, Nakano Takeko are some of the more famous Onna-Bugeisha. There is history that happened and then the history that has been passed down. For most of history, Anonymous was a woman. I want to share about these amazing women history in the days ahead.
