Questions are an essential element of faith. Our community is called "Crossings" in reference to a story in Genesis in which Jacob wrestles with God before crossing the River Jabbok. Wrestling and questioning aren't opposed to faith; they are the necessary conditions for it. Each summer, we pass the microphone to members of our community who share their "Most Important Question". What if “home” is not a place, but a feeling your body can learn again? This episode is a deep, unscripted conversation about what it really means to feel at home — not the place you live, but the feeling of being safe, grounded, and fully yourself. Drawing on the energy of the root chakra, the discussion explores why so many people feel disconnected from their foundations — and what it actually takes to come back. From the nervous system and ancestral fear patterns to the surprising power of eye contact, nature, and silence, the conversation is honest, playful, and thought-provoking. It asks the questions most people never stop long enough to ask themselves: Where do I feel safe? What am I afraid of? Do I have enough — and what does enough even mean? If you've ever felt unmoored, ungrounded, or like you're living someone else's version of home, this one's for you.----------Episode Chapters:00:00:29 Introduction00:01:56 What Does Home Actually Mean?00:03:18 Belonging — The Etymology and the Feeling00:06:27 Basic Needs, the Nervous System, and Why We Feel Unsafe00:07:51 Root Chakra, Fear, and the Urge to Control00:10:55 Why We're All a Little Bit Broken — And That's Okay00:17:51 How Do We Become Whole Again?00:19:30 What Is Grounding, Really?00:21:20 Nature as a Nervous System Reset00:26:54 People as a Grounding Force — Eye Gazing and Human Connection00:31:05 The Most Important Questions to Ask Yourself00:34:03 Stillness, Silence, and Slowing Down00:35:55 Speed Up to Slow Down — The Case for Doing Both00:38:37 Directing Awareness and Giving to the Earth00:39:13 A Bird, a Meditation, and a Full Circle Moment----------Mentions & Resources:Michael Henri's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michaelyoga.pt/ Byron de Marsé's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/byronyoga/The IN Movement Instagram: https://www.instagram/com/the_in_movement/Practices referenced:Kapalabhati (Breath of Fire)Eye gazing (witnessing practice)Meditation and movement for nervous system regulationEarthing / grounding devices (mentioned briefly)Yoga poses mentioned:Kapotasana (Pigeon Pose) — noted as one of Byron's top three posesConcepts explored:Root Chakra (Muladhara) and its development from womb to one year oldGenerational / ancestral fear patternsScarcity vs. abundance inventory exercise"Speed up to slow down" nervous system technique----------Tags: root chakra, grounding, home, safety, nervous system, fear, belonging, yoga philosophy, chakras, ancestral trauma, inner work, trust, abundance, scarcity, mindfulness, breathwork, nature connection, presence, stillness, self-inquiry, meditation, yoga, personal growth, community, mental wellness

This week, we're dropping an episode from our other show, Not Right Now, in the feed, where Quinn and Claire have community organizer and dad, Garrett Bucks, on the show to chat about parenting, of course, but also how he answered the most important question by building community locally and across the nation, and how you can make it easier for parents (and kids, why not) to engage civically as well.Garrett runs The Barnraisers Project, writes The White Pages newsletter, and is the author of the memoir The Right Kind of White. He also has a son who is very mad that his sister thinks they live in a suburb. The gang gets into why your son talks differently to his sister than to his friends, kids not knowing what the Epstein files are, growing up in rural Montana, how to get work done in between school drop off and soccer practice, and why protests are important AND performative AND boring and worth doing anyway, and how to actually get your kids to come.-----------Have feedback? Just because we're done caring about an outbreak doesn't mean the outbreak is done with us.Over the last year, we have watched something unsettling happen in plain sight. The quiet, active dismantling of the systems built to catch outbreaks early, coordinate a response, and keep hospitals and communities from getting overwhelmed.Websites have been scrubbed, teams have been hollowed out. Early warning signals have gone silent, and at the exact same time, diseases that many of us haven't thought about since childhood, like measles, are being let back into the present, which really leaves a lot of people with the same question, said a little differently than usual. If the safety net is being shredded, what do we do now? My returning guest today is Dr. Nahid Bhadelia. Dr. Bhadelia is the Founding Director of the BU Center on Emerging Infectious Diseases, a board-certified infectious diseases physician, and an associate professor at the Boston University School of Medicine. She served as the senior policy advisor for Global COVID-19 Response on the White House COVID-19 response team in 2022-2023, where she coordinated the US global vaccine donation programs and helped lead Project Next Gen, a $5 billion effort to develop next-generation vaccines and treatments for a pandemic prone coronaviruses.Dr. Bhadelia also served as interim testing coordinator for the White House Impacts Response Team, and she's the founding director and co-founder of BEACON, an open-source outbreak surveillance program.Today, we're gonna try to make sense of what's being dismantled, what threats don't wait for politics to catch up, what's starting to fill the gaps and most importantly, what you can do right now to protect yourself, your family, and to help rebuild the public health infrastructure we all rely on whether we have to think about it or not.-----------Have feedback? Plastic. It is the miracle material that has quietly become the infrastructure of modern life over the past 63 years and the almost undefeated business model that's continuing climate change and keeping fossil fuel companies alive and reshaping our bodies, our oceans, and our politics.Yeah, plastic keeps food fresh and hospitals running, and cars and planes lighter, and it's also in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the supply chains that keep churning out more of it while they tell us recycling will handle it.Meanwhile, cities and states are actually trying to rein it in, companies are pledging circularity, and regular people are left staring at their blue bin thinking, does this matter? Does any of this work?So what can I do about plastic? My returning guest is Beth Gardiner, a journalist and author of the new book Plastic Inc. Beth pulls back the curtain on how plastic became so pervasive, why the personal responsibility story has been so convenient for yet another industry, and what the real solutions actually look like, because that's why we're here.So stick with us because at the end of this conversation, what can I do? Won't feel like a shrug. It'll feel like a plan.-----------Have feedback? Tweet us, or send a message to questions@importantnotimportant.comNew here? If our mission is to help people, everyone, answer the most important question, what can I do? Then at some point we need to talk to the people who help really wealthy people, help people. So today's question, what can I do about high net worth philanthropy? And look, hey, maybe you're among the vast majority who just heard that and you're like, well, this one doesn't apply to me, but hear me out. We have some of the worst billionaires of all time, but if billionaires are gonna continue to exist, we all need to have a good idea of how we can push them to distribute their resources more effectively and ASAP.And I truly do believe that among high net worth individuals, there are some, especially younger folks that are dying to do exactly that. So whether that is you or definitely not you, or maybe you are adjacent to someone like that, I think there's something for everyone here.My guest today is Sharon Schneider. Sharon is the Founder of Integrated Capital Strategies LLC, a consulting firm that helps founders and family offices create positive social change using an expanded toolbox of resources and strategies that spans the return spectrum from grants to market rate investments. She's also the author of Handbook for An Integrated Life: A Practical Guide for Aligning Your Everyday Choices with Your Internal Compass, a number one new release on Amazon that helps individuals live into their values the same way her consulting helps business owners and family offices. Sharon previously served as the Executive Director of the Telluray Foundation, the Founding Director of the Walton Personal Philanthropy Group, and the co-founder and CEO of Moxi Jean, a for-profit social enterprise that was acquired by Schoola in 2015. Sharon was named a Colorado Governor's Fellow in 2022 and in 2024 was named an Aspen Institute Finance Leader Fellow, and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.Again, I really do think there's something for everyone here. Turns out it's our 200th episode. It has been a journey. The show is now called The Most Important Question, and I can't think of a better answer than just fucking run for something. What can I do about anything? Run for something. And so obviously the best guest to answer that question, is returning guest, Amanda Litman. If you are new here, she is the co-founder and president of Run For Something, which recruits and supports young, diverse progressives running for down-ballot office, state and local. Since launching in 2017, a hundred years ago, Run For Something has elected more than 1500 leaders across nearly 50 states, mostly women and people of color. She's also the president of Run for Something Civics, a 501C3 that works to end the gerontocracy. Shortly after launching Run for Something, Amanda wrote a book called Run for Something: A Real Talk Guide to Fixing the System Yourself, and she just published her second book called When We Are In Charge: The Next Generation's Guide to Leadership. It's wonderful. It's hugely instructive whether you are young or old and very brittle like me. It doesn't pull any punches at all because it's by Amanda. Anyone in any profession, in the year of our Lord 2025, whether this is the last year or not, will get something out of it, whether you are a leader or not yet.-----------Have feedback or questions? Terri Cavanaugh (VP of Qualitative Insights), Ari Virgil-Paige (Executive VP of the Movie Group), and Aaron Feuer (VP of the Movie Group) reveal how honest audience feedback helps filmmakers perfect their vision. What Makes Focus Groups Essential (01:43) The moderators explain why there's no substitute for hearing verbally from audiences and how focus groups add crucial nuance beyond quantitative data. The Magic First Question (02:28) Aaron reveals the power of asking "Can you give me a word or phrase to describe what you just saw?" and how those initial responses catalyze entire conversations. What Makes a Great Moderator (06:39) The team discusses essential qualities, including curiosity, intuition that can't be taught, and the ability to read a room while multitasking through multiple layers of observation. The Most Important Question (13:24) Each moderator shares their approach to the one question they'd ask if limited to just one, revealing different philosophies about serving the client versus finding truth.Dealing with Naysayers (18:11) The moderators address criticism head-on, explaining why they're advocates for the audience, not critics looking to serve their agendas.Handling Difficult Respondents (26:59) Practical advice on managing disruptive participants, from body language techniques to knowing when to remove someone entirely.Building Trust Quickly (30:22) Techniques for engaging audiences immediately, from working with shy kids to using strategic authenticity to create safe spaces for honest feedback.Filmmaker Appreciation (35:00) Stories of working with receptive movie directors like Peter Farrelly, Paul Feig, Matt Damon, and the Russo Brothers, who embrace the process and see research as a valuable tool. The Art of the Nugget (40:54) How one small audience insight can crack the code and solve major story problems, with examples of breakthrough moments that transformed films. These moderators demonstrate that great focus group leadership combines theatrical instincts, detective curiosity, and empathy for both audiences and filmmakers. Their stories reveal the delicate balance of extracting truth while respecting the creative process. Please leave us a review and share our podcast with others. Host: Kevin GoetzGuests: Terri Cavanaugh, Ari Virgil-Paige, and Aaron FeuerProducer: Kari CampanoWriters: Kevin Goetz, Darlene Hayman, and Kari CampanoAudio Engineer: Gary Forbes (DG Entertainment) For more information about Screen Engine: Website: https://www.screenengineasi.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/screen-engine-asiInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/screenengineasi/?hl=en For more information about Kevin Goetz:Website: www.KevinGoetz360.comAudienceology Book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Audience-ology/Kevin-Goetz/9781982186678How to Score in Hollywood: https://www.amazon.com/How-Score-Hollywood-Secrets-Business/dp/198218986X/Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube: @KevinGoetz360LinkedIn @Kevin Goetz

While the show is on hiatus, we want to share a few podcasts on the HERO feed that we think you might like. We will release these episodes over the next month.  This first one is from a podcast called The Most Important Question from the Important, Not Important team. When HERO first launched, Important, Not Important featured one of our early episodes. It's a good show, and we've been happy to remain in touch over the years. This episode fits in well with our recent season. It's an interview with Dr. Ticora V. Jones, who served as the chief scientist for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). She's currently the chief science officer at the NRDC.  ----------- Have feedback or questions about the episode? Tweet at the show, or send a message to questions@importantnotimportant.com. I think it's fair to say that oftentimes when we hear the word ‘Belief', we immediately associate it with something either Spiritual or Political – two of the three things my mother told me to never bring up in polite conversation. And yet, whether we recognize it or not, all of us are navigating through life by operating on a set of beliefs. Some of them are constant but many evolve, and some even drop away all together. As my guest this week explores in his latest book, we hold beliefs about things like relationships, family, and character that can make our lives richer, but can just as easily jade our view of others, ourselves, and the world writ-large. After coaching Division 1 football for nearly a decade, Jack W. Williams entered the business world holding leadership roles as Vice President and COO of a regional service firm followed by becoming a SVP in a Fortune 500 company. Since that time he has led several businesses and served on three Boards. In 1993 he formed the IDEALS Foundation which works with high school students in the area of leadership, role modeling and life / soft skills training. In 2008, Jack left his position as president of a regional company to devote full-time to his Foundation and his consulting business, the Timbridge Group, and most recently he's the author of “The Question: A Guide to Answering Life's Most Important Question.”It's a wonderful conversation about the power of understanding our core-beliefs, why you can't split your priorities in half, and the difference between Telling a person what to do and Teaching them what to do.Enjoy the show. _______________SHOWNOTES:Jack's Podcast - Knowledgecast Jack's Website & ContactPurchase Jack's Book

Jonathan then joined Google X's Rapid Eval Team, the initial stage of the famed “Moonshots factory,” where he devised and incubated new Bets (Units) for Alphabet.  The 10 Most Important Questions on Deepseek: How did Deepseek innovate in a way that no other model provider has done? Do we believe that they only spent $6M to train R1? Should we doubt their claims on limited H100 usage? Is Josh Kushner right that this is a potential violation of US export laws? Is Deepseek an instrument used by the CCP to acquire US consumer data? How does Deepseek being open-source change the nature of this discussion? What should OpenAI do now? What should they not do? Does Deepseek hurt or help Meta who already have their open-source efforts with Lama? Will this market follow Satya Nadella's suggestion of Jevon's Paradox? How much more efficient will foundation models become? What does this mean for the $500BN Stargate project announced last week?

My guest today is MIchelle Pollack who might be familiar to you because this is actually her third time on the show. Not long ago, she joined Brian Patacca to take over the show and share their experience inside The Hive. Then, back in episode 32, Michelle came on the show to tackle some obstacles blocking her from putting out consistent content. A lot has changed since then, but as it goes; whenever we reach new levels, we face new opportunities and likely face new problems to solve. So, Michelle and I worked on designing a formula to help her leverage her strengths to bring fresh energy into her marketing. Here's the plan we cooked up: Clarify how you want to feel every day in your business. Tap into the WHY behind why you started your business. Define how your WHY shows up in all aspects of your life outside of your business. Apply the elements you defined in step three back to your business. This requires throwing out any rules you think you should follow. Put your WHY into action to bring energy and intention to your sales and marketing. Michelle helps ambitious women own what they bring to the table and live and lead on their terms. I just want to say that Michelle is easily one of the most coachable guests we've ever had on this show. So, if you're a fan of coaching, you'll love hearing her work through her own obstacles as I simply ask empowered questions. If you're feeling frustrated and exhausted because your marketing efforts are falling flat, despite your efforts to infuse authenticity, then this episode is for you! In this episode, you'll learn to: Show up as the truest version of yourself in your business and personal life. Use the impact you naturally have on your family, friends, and clients as a model for how to show up in your business. Embrace the idea of allowing your business to be the truest version of itself, and consider how this mindset shift can transform your approach to marketing and sales.
