We originally reviewed the Burt Reynolds Classic "Stroker Ace" in Episode 178 in February of 2021. Enjoy! Movie Recap: If you loved Smokey and the Bandit, Cannonball Run, Police Academy, WKRP, Gomer Pyle: USMC, The Hardy Boys, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, Deliverance, and Days of Thunder….this is like all of them combined, minus ….basically everything from Deliverance except Ned Beaty, and all of the really good stuff from Days of Thunder like Tom Cruise and amazing cinematography with real in car race footage at speed. This movie would be culture cancelled today. Sexual harassment is considered innocent fun, women are ogled, there's (ironically) no drug use, and the confederate flags are a plenty. Chris' love for the icon Burt Reynolds seems to know no bounds, and this week he's chosen the 1983 action comedy, Stroker Ace. But is this one going to be a car chase too far? Directed by Hal Needham, known for his work in action-comedy films, and based on a novel by William Neely, the film aimed to capture the excitement and glamour of stock car racing while infusing it with humor and entertainment. Burt Reynolds, who starred as the titular character Stroker Ace, embodied the cocky yet endearing persona of the brash race car driver. The production faced challenges typical of filming high-speed action sequences and coordinating large-scale racing scenes, but Needham's experience as a former stuntman helped to overcome these obstacles. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, "Stroker Ace" achieved moderate success at the box office and remains a cult classic among fans of racing films and Reynolds' filmography. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: When Stroker's reckless behavior causes trouble with his sponsors, he finds himself in need of a new corporate sponsor to fund his racing career. Enter Clyde Torkle a fried chicken mogul who offers Stroker a lucrative deal in exchange for promoting his brand. However, Stroker soon discovers that the arrangement comes with unexpected challenges and humiliations, including dressing up as a chicken mascot. Along the way, Stroker navigates rivalries, romantic entanglements, and outrageous stunts in his quest to reclaim his dignity and dominance on the racing circuit. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support
There were a lot of what-ifs when it came to the score for 1984's Streets of Fire. After rejecting James Horner's compositions, director Walter Hill had a movie that had no music. Cooder, on the other hand, had music that had no movie! His score for Stroker Ace had been rejected by director Hal Needham. So it was a stroke of luck for both of them. Hill's ultra-artificial "rock & roll fable" may have bombed at the box office at the time, but four decades later the movie has long since received the recognition it deserves. It's a masterful cult classic with a fantastic Cooder score. This podcast frequently uses small snippets of musical recordings in podcast episodes for educational, review, and commentary purposes. In this episode of VIA VHS Rewind Review, we look back at the 1983 Burt Reynolds Comedy/Nascar film, Stroker Ace. It's the later years of the Burt Reynolds era and his star power is starting to wane. Instead of taking the role of Garrett Breedlove in Terms of Endearment (a role that won Jack Nicholson an Academy Award) Burt decided to opt against evolving his career and instead agreed to another formulaic Hal Needham car movie. This was not a smart idea as Stroker Ace was poorly received by critics and by the box office, opening at 8th place against the likes of films like WarGames, Trading Places and Return of the Jedi. A far cry from Smokey and the Bandit who was only out grossed in 1977 by the original Star Wars. But is Stroker Ace a film that was just outdated and not fairly viewed by fans and critics. Would it have been a bigger hit if released at the height of Burt Reynolds fame? Wes and Spencer give their thoughts on a film that's so American that Burt Reynolds and Dale Earnhardt share the screen. In the late 70s/ early 80s, there were few women on television that were hotter than Loni Anderson! From her work on the series, "WKRP in Cincinnati" , the made for TV "The Jane Mansfield Story" and alongside future husband Burt Reynolds in the film "Stroker Ace", posters of her lined the walls of teenage boys (and likely some girls) across the nation. And now, at 75 years old, she's still going strong AND looking good in the Amazon series, "My Sister Is So Gay!" We got the chance to talk to this Hollywood icon, and it was every bit as awesome as we hoped! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Like him or not, Burt Reynolds left a formative decade in cowboy films and television to become one of the biggest box office draws (and objects of female lust) of the 70’s. With a nearly unbroken string of box office smashes, he showed up in everything from Woody Allen and Mel Brooks comedies to sports melodrama, from movies built entirely around his down home good ol’ boy charm, often in connection with his good friend and former stunt double cum director Hal Needham (White Lightning, Gator, Smokey and the Bandit) to weird ‘stretch’ things like the musical At Long Last Love or Robert Aldrich’s odd neo-noir Hustle (with arthouse fave Catherine Deneuve, no less!) Kicking off the 80’s still in full swing, he kept on with Smokey and the Bandit and Cannonball Run films and similar fare like Stroker Ace, Hooper and the film adaptation of Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (with Dolly Parton) before making yet another career switch into a sort of grumpy old man Dirty Harry/Paul Kersey lite in films like Sharky’s Machine, Stick, Heat, Malone and Physical Evidence, finally settling into sporadic television cameos thereafter. And we didn’t even mention his naked centerfold and very public affair with aging swing chanteuse cum talk show host Dinah Shore… Join us tonight as we discuss the true force of nature, who wiped a grand swathe across the cinematic landscape of two whole decades(!) – the one, the only, Burt Reynolds. This week our tribute to Burt Reynolds which turns into more of a roast really. A reading from a scathing Roger Ebert article that sums it all up. The big Rachel Feinstein wedding with Colin Quinn, Tom Papa and Amy Schumer and of course the most hilarious guest of all, Dave Juskow. Duh. And, the Serena Williams now legendary classic US Open Meltdown. Oh and also what Cynthia Nixon puts on a bagel. You'll actually want to know. An all new podcast. :) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week we interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to reflect on the legacy of genuine movie star Burt Reynolds in one of his worst roles. Also Joe gives his mini-review of the Karate Kid series, Cobra Kai.
In the second episode of this season we get back behind the wheel with Burt Reynolds with Hal Needham back behind the camera in the 1983 race car disaster “Stroker Ace”. This movie has everything you expect from the team of Reynolds and Needham. It includes car chases, car crashes, misogyny, sexual assault, attempted murder, bar fights, illogical plot structure and general disappointment. The post Pick Six Movies – S1: Episode 2: Stroker Ace appeared first on Legion.
How do you bring NASCAR to a mainstream audience in movie form? Tom Cruise, I guess. I mean, it beats Stroker Ace. Days of Thunder was actually the last of an era - the last time producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson got to do a high budget action movie before the studio got too mad at them to do it again. There is a lot to love, though - the portrayal of racing as a dangerous obsession by infantile people who grasp at an illusion of control hits right at home, especially with our guest, Andie Albin - who works for the SCCA and races herself! What do you think about early 1990's NASCAR and the Chevy Lumina? How about Tom Cruise's character crossing the line while hitting on Nicole Kidman's Dr. Luwicki? And you wouldn't believe how many scenes in this movie are based on real events! Follow Sid and James - @SidBridgeComedy and @S2KJames. Keep up with Andie at www.scca.com! Reels and Wheels continues its odd relationship with favorite director Hal Needham, talking about what in retrospect was one of his most disturbing movies - Stroker Ace! Sid and James are joined by JG Pasterjak, comedian and writer for Grassroots Motorsports to take a look at the movie that effectively ruined Burt Reynolds' career. So how many Ford Foxbody vehicles can you squeeze into one movie? How great was early 1980's NASCAR? How patently disturbing was this movie? http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-086-Megaforce.mp3 Download MP3 How is it possible that a movie featuring a team of commandos on motorbikes equipped with laser guns didn't completely dominate our culture in the early 80s? Looking back to that era, it's sometimes hard to explain why some entertainment was able to worm its way into our collective unconscious, while others became forgotten relics. Was it a terrible idea to cast Barry Bostwick as a charismatic action star? No, that's a pretty good idea. Was it a bad call to hire former stuntman Hal Needham to helm the thing? Probably not -- he's fresh off Cannonball Run (one of our favorite movies!) and he still hasn't spawned previous webipod subjects Stroker Ace or Rad, so nobody knows that he's terrible yet. And you can't fault the marketing -- we were inspired to add this movie to the list because of its persistent, quite frankly awesome full-page ads in comic books. Is it possible that children thirty-plus years ago had some sense of taste, and could tell a low-quality pander when they saw it? That conclusion is hard to defend. For whatever reason, Megaforce is the rare crap-aimed-at-children that didn't catch on. To find out why, listen to us ramble for an hour and change. Original post located at searchforschlock.com.
http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-079-StrokerAce.mp3 Download MP3 We unironically love Smokey and the Bandit and Cannonball Run, so you might think we'd be really enthusiastic about watching any movie directed by former stuntman Hal Needham and starring moustache-enthusiast and one-time box office superstar Burt Reynolds. Well, there are a couple problems with that theory. Firstly, it's only been about half a year since we sat through another Hal Needham flick called Rad, and we haven't fully healed. Secondly, this movie is about NASCAR, and -- surprise! -- that's not really our thing. Thirdly, Burt Reynolds himself cites this film has "the one where I lost them". That doesn't sound good. Burt's love interest is played by Loni Anderson, who he later married; in this film, he contemplates sexually assaulting her while she sleeps. That doesn't sound great either. And instead of Dom DeLuise, Burt's sidekick is Gomer Pyle. Oooooh boy. This one's gonna be tough. Original post located at searchforschlock.com.

Last week’s guest, Jacob Cook sticks around for another show. You know what that means, quiz time! Jacob is the Mad Max of the Information Highway, who supports open source and decentralization with his amazing projects. Keep reading or listen for more on our guest from Montreal! Chris is inspired by Jacob’s passion for his projects, arkOS and CitizenWeb Project so he asks the tough questions, what’s in Jacob’s future? And, the old man question, what about retirement? Fearing the loss of Net Neutrality and crying in his toque, Chris wonders if Jacob has used any of the mesh networks that are popping up. For example, Hyperboria which is part of Project Meshnet. By the way, you should probably click that Net Neutrality link above. John Oliver will have you in tears. Check out GNU Social or use Quitter to check out a decentralized social network. It’s just as amazing as Twitter. Have a look at Diaspora as well. Paul & Jacob geek out about VPS providers, DigitalOcean and Linode. The greatest random quiz to date on Montreal Sauce: What do they know about Burt Reynolds’ mustache? Who will win? Paul or Jacob? Everyone has a Sean Connery impression. All the Burt Reynolds research led to an awful find, Skullduggery. The world needs more Dom Deluise. Enjoy some bloopers from Cannonball Run. We all fasten on our nerd badges and talk Battlestar Galactica. Intel will be selling a 3D printable robot soon. We need to have Jacob back on the show in the future so we can talk poutine. On this week's episode, the gang tackles a sweaty ass Burt Reynolds' movie with the pretty silly, Stroker Ace! Is Stroker an immortal god who has lived through Prohibition and the sweaty 1980s? Is Ned Beatty's character really just Otis from Superman on the run from Mr. Luthor? And how many prehistoric jokes can we fit into one movie? PLUS: Eric mildly enjoys Tom Jones, Andrew does not. Different opinions on We Hate Movies! Stroker Ace stars Burt Reynolds, Jim Nabors, Ned Beatty, Loni Anderson and Parker Stevenson; directed by Hal Needham.
