September 9, 2024 When our minds are in the forefront, which is how all usually live our lives, our bodies are running around fulfilling the mind's agenda, our hearts are in self-protective mode, and our minds tell our soul that it doesn't even exist. We may take a break from all of that periodically, like in a Pause, but it's just a break – it doesn't awaken our souls enough to transcend to the rest of our lives. Instead of focusing on what we are doing in the world (mind in charge), let's look at the space surrounding our doing. In this episode, we will put our minds in the back seat, and awaken our souls, so that our heart can open, our minds can be the support for our soul and heart, and our body can be the presence needed in the world. In these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die And where you invest your love, you invest your life In these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die And where you invest your love, you invest your life Awake my soul Awake my soul Awake my soul For you were made to meet your maker Awake My Soul, Mumford and Sons

Mark 10:46-52 (ESV) And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way. This took place a week before Jesus' death, being his last miracle. The beggar called out, “Son of David, have mercy on me,” indicating His royal origin Messianic title describing Jesus Christ as man, a savior of His people. This is who the beggar believed Jesus to be. Isaiah 11:1-3a (NIV) “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord— and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.” Jesus responds to my faith. “There is a sound I love to hear It's the sound of the Saviour's robe As He walks into the room where people pray Where we hear praises He hears faith” Jewish people believed illness and disability was a punishment from God because of personal sin committed. “Be silent”, was their response. In their opinion, he didn't deserve to have Jesus listen to him. Hebrews 11:1 (NIV) Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV) For we live by faith, not by sight. James 2:17 (NIRV) It is the same with faith. If it doesn't cause us to do something, it's dead. Praise is an expression of our faith. Faith causes us to act on what we know, not on what is seen. Ill. Dylan jumping off a stump. Jesus responds to my posture. “Awake my soul and sing Sing His praise aloud sing His praise aloud Oh awake my soul and sing Sing His praise aloud sing His praise aloud. There is a sound that changes things The sound of His people on their knees Oh wake up you slumbering It's time to worship Him” Now why is it amazing that he throws off his cloak? Well, for most people living in first century Palestine, a person's cloak was their most valuable possession. Cloaks were expensive, thick, heavy garments, and the average person could only afford one. They weren't simply outer garments meant to be worn outdoors, nor were they fashion statements. Cloaks were functional, multipurpose garments. In addition to functioning as a coat in cold weather, they were also used as a blanket at nighttime. And, for a blind beggar like Bartimaeus, he most likely spread his cloak out in front of him during the daytime to collect any coins or loose change that passerbys might toss his way. His cloak represented a way of life for him. He had learned to cope and survive in an existence devoid of intimacy, connection, kindness and care. He leaves his cloak on the ground, trusts Jesus fully to heal him. The road is crowded and he is blind. He will be in dire straits if his cloak is kicked along or stolen. My attention is drawn to the posture of Bartimaeus in two ways: 1.Heart Posture “Awake my soul and sing” Hebrews 13:15 (ESV) Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Psalm 71:8 (ESV) My mouth is filled with your praise, and with your glory all the day. Isaiah 25:1 (ESV) O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you; I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure. Psalm 103:1 (ESV) Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Physical Posture “The sound of His people on their knees” Quote: “Your heart is caught up in the experience of the moment, which causes your body to respond outwardly. We were created as holistic beings with intellects, emotions, and bodies all working in concert with one another to express ourselves.” Kneeling Psalm 95:6 (ESV) Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! Lifting Up Hands Psalm 63:3-4 (ESV) Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as live;in your name I will lift up my hands. Dancing Psalm 149:3 (NIRV) Let them praise his name with dancing. Let them make music to him with harps and tambourines. Clapping Hands Psalm 47:1 (NIV) Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. Shouting Psalm 71:23 (NIRV) My lips will shout with joy when I sing praise to you. You have saved me. Praising In Tongues 1 Corinthains 14:1-2 (ESV) Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. Laying Prostrate Numbers 20:6 (ESV) Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting and fell on their faces. And the glory of the Lord appeared to them Revelation 7:11 (ESV) And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures; and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God Matthew 26:39 (ESV) And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” We value the presence of God in this house. Why do you think we invite you to join us up front to worship? Jesus responds to my request. “And when He moves and when we pray Where stood a wall now stands a way Where every promise is amen (it is so) And when He moves make no mistake The bowels of hell begin to shake All hail the Lord all hail the King” Luke 18:40 “And when he came near, he asked himAtmosphere/circumstances shift through worship inspired by our faith and posture. 1 Corinthians 24-5 (NIV) 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God's power. Ephesians 3:20 (NIRV) God is able to do far more than we could ever ask for or imagine. He does everything by his power that is working in us. Hebrews 11:6 (ESV) And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. FAITH IS POWER! Revelation 5:11-14 (NIRV) Then I looked and heard the voice of millions and millions of angels. They surrounded the throne. They surrounded the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they were saying, “The Lamb, who was put to death, is worthy! He is worthy to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength! He is worthy to receive honor and glory and praise!” All creatures in heaven, on earth, under the earth, and on the sea were speaking. The whole creation was speaking. I heard all of them say, “Praise and honor belong to the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb! Glory and power belong to God for ever and ever!” The four living creatures said, “Amen.” And the elders fell down and worshiped.

Episode 07 was first recorded on Tuesday, January 30, 2024. It features a conversation with two lay leaders from Heart of the Shepherd Lutheran Church in Howell, Michigan. The conversation is a kind of guided brainstorming session designed to help Katie and Bob expand the discipleship culture at their church. They have both been through the Disciple Like You Mean It online training, and now their pastor has asked them to help spread the impact of the tools and attitudes in that course. After a brief introduction and opening prayer by Next Step Press founder Justin Rossow, you will get a little background on both of these lay leaders, including their impression of the course. Three words seem to rise to the top in this conversation: Prayerful, Invitational, and Intentional. Those three keys to expanding your discipleship culture help these leaders imagine some ways to create new relationships as well as engage existing groups with insights from the Next Step discipleship process. Along the way, you will hear Katie say that she is using Visual Faith® Ministry tools and taking a group to a Visual Faith® Ministry event in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She'll be using that common experience to springboard more engagement with ongoing discipleship and grow toward a DLYMI Triad. If you are in the area on March 16, 2024 from 9am-1pm, you can sign up for that VFM event here: www.tinyurl.com/visualprayer101. It features a conversation with Kim Longden, Katie Helmreich, and Jamie Wiechman, three people who are walking through the Disciple Like You Mean It experience in a group of three (or Triad). 0:00-8:30After a brief opening prayer, you'll hear from Jamie, Kim, and Katie about their experience so far with the Disciple Like You Mean It online training. 8:30-15:04 Then we'll discuss a question Jamie submitted in the course: How exactly do you lower the bar on your next step? 15:05-23:52As part of that discussion, you'll hear the Triad talk about what happens when the people around you don't seem to be ready for the same next step as you are, and what it means to notice your acquaintances and even need help a little more intentionally. 23:53-33:31Kim also noticed something significant as part of her interaction with the course material. She said she's sometimes uncomfortable when people begin to share more deeply, because she often feels like she has to fix it. That insight gives us a chance to talk about the ministry of listening to others as an intentional act of service and discipleship. 33:32-endBefore we are done, we'll talk about showing you care even in the silence and looking for ways for lowing the bar and taking small next steps as you grow in your practice of listening. During today's Back Porch Theology session, I'll be the one alternately laughing and crying because we have the pure joy of continuing a soul-stirring conversation about the heart of worship with none other than my dear friend, Brooke Ligertwood. Romans 12:1-2 says: Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. And those verses Paul penned are a great description of worship because it's not simply the songs of faith we sing in church or in the car or listen to while we're gutting out a few more minutes on the elliptical at the gym – instead the act of worship should encompass the entirety of our lives when we're living in obedience to God! I've learned so much about the wholistic – 24/7 - nature of biblical worship through Brooke. She's one of the preeminent worship leaders of our modern era, she leads tens of thousands of people toward the throne of Jesus in stadiums all over the world, and she's written or co-written some of the most God-honoring, faith-galvanizing, biblically rooted worship songs that are sung in almost every stream of the Christian faith including What a Beautiful Name, King of kings, Awake My Soul, Who You Say I Am, and A Thousand Hallelujahs. Christ-followers across the globe are familiar with her music, but what some people don't know about Brooke is that she's a passionately devoted student of God's Word, a voracious reader of theology – we're rabid fans of some of the same long dead church fathers like Saint Augustine, Brother Lawrence and Blasé Pascal - and in fact, Brooke is so serious about biblical fidelity that runs all of her lyrics by theological scholars before recording them. Every single time I have the pure joy of hanging out with Brooke, I walk away more in love with Jesus and today is no exception so please grab a great big mug of coffee or hot chocolate or green juice, and your Bible – unless you're trying to get ahead of the Christmas curve and stuck in the attic untangling last year's tangled strands of lights, of course – and come relax on the porch with us. During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology we're going to wade into the refreshing, invigorating, cleansing and sometimes even healing waters of worship. According to theological scholars – in the context of our Judeo-Christian belief system - worship is the reverential response of creation to the all-encompassing magnificence of God. In biblical narrative, worship includes activities like bringing an offering or sacrifice to God, bowing down in deference and obeisance, and of course proclaiming His transcendent holiness, omnipotent power, and compassionate faithfulness through song. It's what Moses models in Exodus 15:11 when he asks in awed wonder: Who is like you, O Lord? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? When it comes to worship leaders, it's probably not too much of a stretch to call King David the perennial favorite because he wrote almost half of the 150 Psalms, all of which were originally written as songs – s-o-n-g-s. That means Dave's tunes were all over some kind of ancient Spotify! And when it comes to modern-day worship leaders, our guest on BPT today is a perennial favorite, as well. She's written and co-written some of the most God-honoring, faith-galvanizing, biblically rooted worship songs of this era that are consistently belted out in communities of faith all over the world including What a Beautiful Name, King of kings, Awake My Soul, Who You Say I Am, and A Thousand Hallelujahs. But what I love and respect most about my dear friend Brooke Ligertwood isn't her Grammy-award winning musical genius or her gorgeous voice, it's her humility-soaked heart. All it takes is a few minutes in her company and you can tell this woman spends a lot of time at the feet of Jesus. I think you'll find yourself leaning more fully into His presence after hanging out with her today, too. So please grab a cup of coffee on this glorious Fall day, and your Bible – unless you're learning the the ancient art of henna and practicing on a brave friend with indelible ink, of course! – and come prop your feet up on the porch with us. God is Able is available anywhere books are sold.

Everyone loves to hear from Esther Caswell, so today we are re-airing her episode from last year as the next episode in our "Find Your Fire" series. Esther knows what it means to truly live in the spirit and completely surrender your life to God and she shares that with us today. If you have never heard from Esther before, you are in for a treat! If you heard this episode last year, I invite you to listen again. She brought me to tears and taught me so much as I listened to it this week while editing. I am certain that the Lord will share something new in your heart the second time around. She runs a non-profit in Austin called Vidi Aquam, where she ministers to mothers. God is Bigger than our excuses, but what about distractions? How do they fit into this conversation? There have been times when God asked me to step out, like when He placed on my heart to write, Awake My Soul, I found anything and everything to do other than sit down and write. I thought if I procrastinated, maybe God would change His mind and ask someone else to do it. Have you ever done that? If you ever tried to distract yourself from being obedient to God, you probably learned a hard lesson like myself. However, I'm grateful for those lessons, because they showed me God never gave up on His dream over me, and He won't give up on yours either. Sometimes it's just easier to face head-on what He is asking instead of prolonging it because no matter difficulty, it's for our good and His glory. My guest today is a family friend. Dr. Jenifer Wakefield is a Christ-follower, disciple-maker, and staff biblical counselor at Great Hills Baptist Church in Austin, Texas. Jenifer is the wife of Gary Wakefield for 38 years, mom of two grown daughters and their husbands, as well as "Gigi" to granddaughters Aven & Vivien. Because of the lack of quality and affordable resources for women in crisis, God gave Jenifer an impression to help create one of the answers for women impacted by crisis and addiction. Restoration Ranch, Texas, is a 501 (c) 3, tax-exempt non-profit ministry since 2018. The team has plans to open the first residence in the Greater Austin area in the summer of 2022.

Has God ever laid a BIG DREAM on your heart? Me too! God laid on my heart to write Awake My Soul and seek translators in other countries to translate this resource. I thought God was out of his mind. I had no clue where to start. But I knew more people needed to know who God is, and there was a simple way to cultivate their relationship with Him in three biblical practices. Hooks2Crook Ministries has partnered with different global ministries to ensure they have access to God's Word in their dream language and a resource that guides them in Prayer, Reading, and Praising. Recently we helped a group in India receive 1000 Bibles and books in Bengali, and now we are working toward a new goal. One that is taking us to Uganda. We are fundraising for 374 bibles in Luganda and 300 copies of Awake my Soul in Luganda.  The people there have limited resources, and several believers have never owned a Bible. The people in the village have been known to share a copy of God's Word.  But you can help! You have an opportunity to provide a personal copy of God's Word in their dream language and recourse that guides them on how to read Scripture and form a relationship with God for less than $15.  Would you consider donating a one-time donation of $15 to help us reach our goal? Log on to https://www.hooks2crook.com/donations/translation-for-luganda/ I would like to introduce you to my guest for today's episode Ashely Moore. God has Big Dreams for Ashley too. However, in today's episode, Ashley and I discuss a fear she faced when support from family and friends seemed to lack. Have you ever thought my community or my family would think I'm crazy if I do what God asks me to do? You are in good company. Ashley Moore is a ministry leader in her local church, writer, and host of be the two™ podcast. Using passionate storytelling, she encourages readers and listeners to abide, obey, and impact their spheres of influence for Christ. She contributes to Kingdom Edge Magazine and has submitted devotionals and articles to The Secret Place, enLIVEn, The Bubbling Brook, and Rescue: a Devotional for Homeschool Moms. Ep #55 Awake My Soul Part One with Stories, Songs and Musical Meditations by Karyn Lynn Grant.  (Inspired by The Book of Mormon) Join us to learn how to “Awaken the Soul” from the innermost feelings of fear, doubt, loneliness, heartache, contriteness of spirit and soul by combining scripture study, storytelling, songs and musical meditations with a focus upon the tender mercies of Christ.  This podcast was inspired by Karyn's search to learn more about the pure love of Christ, through "The Book of Mormon".   As we combine “Song & Scent” about the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we discover buried treasures in the history of those ancient mothers and wives who, behind the scenes displayed courage; loved and prayed for their people; their husbands, sons and daughters and future generations that would inherit the Americas.  Together, we can glean from these scriptures, the love and tenderness God displays for all of His children and begin to apply the power of prayer, the ministration of angels, the joy of creating miracles and the miracle of forgiveness through returning our hearts to the Creator and Maker of our Souls.  It matters not one's religious preference. If you have a “willing heart and mind”, it is Karyn's hope that you too can glean the sweet messages from “another testament of Christ”.  Whether you are new to "The Stories She Sings" podcast or a loyal fan, please support our mission by rating, reviewing and subscribing to the show on Apple Podcasts or wherever you prefer to listen.
