(Here is a lost episode from the back of the vault. Enjoy!)Can the 2023 installment of the Transformers film franchise transform Gen Z into '90s hip-hop fans?Set in 1994, the film follows ex-military tech guru Noah Diaz and a young historian Elena Wallace as they team up with Optimus Prime and the Autobots in a battle for the coveted Transwarp Key, which, if in the hands of the Terrorcons, could threaten the future of Earth and all of mankind.Topics discussed:
Today on Art of the Cut we speak with Oscar-winning editor - and now DIRECTOR - William Goldenberg, ACE about his directorial debut - the NUMBER ONE GLOBAL MOVIE on Amazon - Unstoppable. Of course, we also have William's editor - no, he didn't edit it himself - Brett Reed. Brett and William have been working together for more than 20 years. William has been on Art of the Cut many times, including for The Instigators, Air, The Outfit, News of the World, 22 July, Detroit, and Live By Night. Billy won the Oscar for Best editing, a BAFTA and an ACE Eddie for Argo. He was nominated for an ACE Eddie for Air, an Oscar nomination and a BAFTA nom for The Imitation Game, nominated for an Oscar for Zero Dark Thirty, nominated for an Oscar and an ACE Eddie for Seabiscuit, and for The Insider… and an Emmy for Citizen X. Brett was also on The Instigators. He was an editor on M. Night Shyamalan's Old. He was also an additional editor on Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Detroit and Live by Night. This discussion includes - among other things - the editing skills that helped William transition to director, why - other than their long working relationship - that William chose Brett as his editor, editing handheld footage - and a fascinating bit of Hollywood lore about Led Zeppelin and the movie Argo. [School of Movies 2024] The initial and glowingly positive reviews are coming in for Transformers One this week. It's the first entirely-animated Transformers movie since the infamous Optimus-Prime-slaughtering 'The Transformers: The Movie' in 1986, and I am happy and hopeful for the future in that regard. But what of the state of the live action films? The fifth and final Michael Bay-directed mess was The Last Knight in 2017, which did almost HALF the box office of the obscenely successful Age of Extinction in 2014. Then came Bumblebee in 2018, very purposefully different in tone from the leery MacGuffin hunts of the Bay films. It made less again, despite being the only one with heart and soul. Then in 2023, this seventh entry sought to split the difference with a return to the MacGuffin hunt and big, noisy robot battles of the earlier entries, but with an injection of the humanity and spark of Bumblebee. This episode contains a bonus; the previously Patreon-exclusive exploration of my re-edits of the five Bayformers. What, if anything can be saved from that towering mountain of extremely lucrative scrap!?

Deadline broke the news that Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy is being courted as Marvel Studios' first choice to direct the franchise's next Avengers movie. Though so much isn't known about the future of the Avengers due to Marvel's internal shake-up reordering their release schedule of shows and movies as well as the Jonathan Majors legal issues and consequential firing, Deadline did say Levy was given a script from writer Michael Waldron. It is also rumored that more than 60 Marvel characters could appear. Captain America: Brave New World began reshoots in Atlanta last week, with new cast member Giancarlo Esposito joining the call sheet for the 22 days of additional photography. Unofficial, leaked set photos confirmed the actor's involvement after he heavily hinted at an unexpected role within the MCU. While we still have no word on which character Esposito portrays, all signs point to the role being, quote, ‘villainous' in nature. This week treated us to a batch of brand-spanking new, high-profile trailers, Let's break down our thoughts: Venom 3 Moana 2 Alien: Romulus J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Middle Earth works have seen their fair share of adaptations, but one character that has long been absent from the proceedings to the chagrin of many readers is The Fellowship of the Ring's Tom Bombadil. That all changes as Amazon's Rings of Power Season 2 is set to feature the character, with English actor Rory Kinnear portraying the enigmatic forest dweller. This was revealed in a Vanity Fair exclusive. Tolkien himself was often hazy on the character, who has been described as older than old, and more of an observer than active participant in the many conflicts of Middle Earth. We couldn't have expected to carve out a collectable popcorn bucket niche when we started this show, but here we are: Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds unveiled a cheeky ad teasing a somewhat risqué popcorn bucket for Marvel's upcoming superhero team-up. The bucket, shaped like a Wolverine head with a comically wide-open mouth, aligns with Kevin Feige's promise of a “crude and rude” design. Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is in talks to join Scarlett Johansson in the upcoming Jurassic movie. Chris Hemsworth is in talks to lead a Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover sequel to Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, with no release date yet. Jeremy Renner joins the cast of Rian Johnson's Knives Out 3, his first role since his early 2023 snowplow accident, alongside Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Mila Kunis, Josh O'Connor, and Cailee Spaeny. (Kaylee Spain-ee) In addition to producing the It prequel series for Max currently titled Welcome to Derry, Bill Skarsgard will also return to reprise his role as Pennywise the Clown from It and It Chapter 2. In a Variety Actors on Actors interview with Jodie Foster, Robert Downey, Jr. said the following when asked if he would return to Tony Stark: “It's the character that is most like me and I've become surprisingly open minded to the idea.” Warner Bros. Television is in the early stages of developing a 300 TV series prequel, with Zack Snyder in talks to direct and produce. Elle Fanning is in talks to star in Badlands, a new Predator universe movie directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who revamped the franchise with Prey. New Star Wars show The Acolyte is premiering right now, and Marvel Comics announced the wookiee Jedi character, Kelnacca, will be getting a one-shot comic book written by Cavan Scott. Netflix is currently developing an animated series based on the popular video game Minecraft alongside Mojang Studios, the Swedish developer of the game. MCU and Lost star Evangeline Lilly announced on her Instagram that she is retiring from acting. Peaky Blinders fans can get excited as a film starring Cillian Murphy is in the pipeline. Plot details and more casting isn't known, but Murphy will also co-produce the film, which will land on Netflix.

Normally, when you hear "A tradition unlike any other", you think The Masters, as that's the slogan. However, it is a slogan that more closely describes THE DEUCIE AWARDS!! For the 11th time, Dave and Mikey, now joined by #XLessDrEarl, preside over the "people's movie awards"... and the top 10 of the year as well! And to assist, the Deucecast crew invites in many friends of the show, from Burgess to Kaufman to Aussie to the Ryfuns and even more -- with an assist from The Main Street Electrical Podcast co-host Jenn Novotny, it's quite an award-fest! In addition, Dave, Mikey, and Dr Earl give their own fave films of the year -- you can likely guess the films that make all three lists, but there are a few out of left field as well. Joe crossover movie in 2025 or 2026, following a tease during "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts." The hosts then move on to discuss a Marvel Comics writer's false claim that Kevin Feige ordered the death of Kamala Khan for MCU synergy, clarifying that Feige's involvement was exaggerated. Night Shyamalan's "Trap." Finally, in the review segment, Jason reviews FX's "Shogun," Rigel reviews "Invincible Season 2" and "Monkey Man," and Ant reviews "Terrifier 2." And to give out the awards, you need the nominations... so tonight, two special guests and Friends of the Show step up to reveal all that you have been wishing for (and you'll find below) First, though, Mikey, d$, and #XLessDrEarl discuss a little Oscar recap -- what was snubbed, the surprises, the chalk of it all, the good parts and the bad. Then, they take a look at their fave films of the year, and while all of their Top 10s are coming up in a few weeks, along with the actual Deucie Awards, they look just outside the Top 10, at numbers 11 through 15 on their lists. What just missed out on Mikey's Top 10, sitting in that next 5? What made d$'s 11 to 15, that may have made in the other guys top 10s? And what movies are crossovers, appearing on everyone's lists? And then finally... the nominations are out... It's the annual reckoning! Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) and Peter Sciretta (@Petersciretta) return to the podcast and, along with the rest of the Filmcast crew, discuss this year's summer box office. Where did we guess right in the Summer Movie Wager? What were our many, many, many failures? Listen to hear us discuss! Thanks to our sponsor for this episode, BetterHelp: Betterhelp: Go to BetterHelp.com/filmcast to get 10% off your first month. We're making video versions of our reviews! Be sure to follow us on the following platforms: YouTube Tiktok Instagram The Summer Movie Wager is a box office game which is played each summer. You can find the history and play along at http://www.thesummermoviewager.com (thanks to Dennis for maintaining the site!) The general goal of this game is to predict the highest grossing films of the summer in terms of domestic box office, IN THE CORRECT ORDER. The closer you get to the final ranked order, the more points you get. This year, the summer movie wager will begin on May 4 2023 (the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3) and last through September 4, 2023, Labor Day, as usual. Each of your 13 picks (10 movies and 3 dark horses) gets a single score assigned to it by using the following rules: If your picked movie for #1 OR #10 is correct, you score 13 points for it. If your picked movie for 2-9 is correct, you score 10 points for it. If your picked movie is only 1 spot away from its actual placement, you score 7 points for it. If your picked movie is only 2 spots away from its actual placement, you score 5 points for it. If your picked movie is placed inside the Top 10, you score 3 points for it. If your picked movie is not placed inside the Top 10, you score 0 points for it. For each of your picked dark horses placed inside the Top 10, you score 1 point. -If two or more rules apply to a single pick, only that single rule will be applied which assigns the highest point value to that pick. For example: If your pick for #1 is correct, you don't get 16 points for it because it is #1 and because it placed inside the Top 10; instead you only get 13 points for it.
