In this episode of The Food Professor Podcast, we welcome Karen Proud, the inaugural President and Adjudicator of the newly established Office of the Grocery Sector Code of Conduct (OGSCC). With an extensive background in industry leadership, policy, and regulatory affairs—including past roles as President & CEO of Fertilizer Canada and COO at Food, Health & Consumer Products of Canada—Karen brings deep expertise to this critical new role aimed at fostering fair business practices in the grocery industry.Karen shares insights into her priorities for the first 100 days, including setting up the office, educating industry stakeholders, and ensuring smooth implementation when the code officially takes effect in June. She also addresses industry skepticism about the voluntary nature of the code and how transparency, public reporting, and industry buy-in will drive accountability.Beyond the grocery code, Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Sylvain Charlebois dive into pressing issues shaping the food retail landscape. They explore the evolving "buy Canadian" movement, questioning whether consumer support for domestic products is a trend or a fleeting response to geopolitical tensions. They also discuss the impact of tariffs, supply management in the dairy sector, and whether Canadians truly understand how grocery pricing and food policies work. The conversation extends to shrinkflation, the federal government's response to rising food costs, and how consumer perceptions influence buying behaviour. Are grocery chains and private-label brands benefiting from shifting consumer preferences? Is there a genuine commitment from major players to offer more Canadian-made products? In addition, raw milk and seed oils take center stage, with Sylvain weighing in on the debate over health benefits, government regulation, and consumer demand for alternative food choices. Meanwhile, the discussion around the GST holiday on food purchases highlights ongoing efforts to alleviate consumer financial pressure while maintaining a competitive retail environment.New York Times article on Raw Milkhttps://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/13/magazine/raw-milk-danger-benefits.html?unlocked_article_code=1.wk4.xI2Q.wjjcYaYrbFpb&smid=url-share The Food Professor #podcast is presented by Caddle. This week, a technologically-augmented interdimensional mummy runs amok on a replica of the Orient Express in space under the control of a terrifying alien intelligence or something. It's a day at the office for Doctor Who, in Mummy on the Orient Express. Notes and links Mummy on the Orient Express marks the triumphant return of Janet Henfrey to Doctor Who after about twenty-five years: she plays Miss Hardaker in The Curse of Fenric. She will come back some time after that to play the Adjudicator in Sil and the Seven Seeds of Arodor. David Bamber is in charge of this version of the Orient Express: Nathan recognises him immediately as Cicero in Rome and as Mr Collins in Pride and Prejudice. Richard notes that he plays [Adolf Hitler][] in Valkyrie (2008), and perhaps more terrifyingly Noel in Camping, a sitcom created by Julia Davis. Si saw him turn up in an episode of Endeavour, the Inspector Morse prequel set in the late 1960s. Meanwhile, Christopher Villiers returns to Doctor Who as Professor Moorhouse; thirty years earlier he was young Hugh Fitzwilliam in The King's Demons. Alarmingly, Richard is right to suggest that he is a descendant of the aristocracy. And finally, Frank Skinner is a famous standup comedian and radio presenter. The show Richard is thinking of may be The Rest is History on Radio 4, but he has been in many, many radio shows over the years. You can see John Sessions's 1994 audition to play the Doctor in the TV movie here on YouTube. He plays the terrifying General Tannis in the BBC webcast Death Comes to Time (2001). “I will serve. I will be of service.”We're On the Run With John Wick.Picking up right where Chapter 2 ended, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum gives us more of what came before – amazing fight sequences with serious stuntwork, beautiful cinematography, and expanded world-building. While it delivers on all fronts, some people found this one's expanded universe to be a bit too much. But is it? Or does it work? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our journey through the John Wick series with our conversation about Chad Stahelski's 2019 film John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Here's a hint at what we talk about.First off, what's with the addendum to the title? Did we need “Parabellum” added, even if it fits both in the Latin phrase mentioned as well as the aptly named parabellum Luger cartridge? Title issues aside, we dig into the world-building here and try to sort out how much world-building is too much, and at what point does it feel like the world-building is there just to get John out of and into particular situations. That aside, we have a fantastic slew of new characters – The Director, The Elder, The Adjudicator, Sofia, Tick Tock Man, Ernest, and more – not to mention more with some of our favorites, particularly Lance Reddick who we sadly lost between our last recording and this one. The stunt work and action choreography is top notch in this film, particularly the work with the dogs. It's a fun, violent film and whether you feel it's better than, worse than, or on par with what came before, it certainly fits in this world. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. This month's patron-funded story is "Biohazard" by Victoria Frost, narrated by Eleanor O'Brien. Pick up Monster Whisperer, Second Class Although the junior adjudicators liked to go out for drinks after work, it didn't mean they weren't as boring and pretentious while lounging in the mixed quarter and drinking galactic drinks as they were in the Hall of Justice. U'elh sighed, sipping her drink, and gazed out over the bar, watching Ma'elhian and Humans avoid each other or, very occasionally, mingle. To her surprise, at the bar she spotted a familiar jawline. She waited until the woman turned. It was her. Last week, a Human murderer had been brought to face Ma'elhian judgement. He was accompanied by two Human guards: one a male in a bulky jacket and gloves, and the other a young female, with a strong jaw and watchful eyes, showing no sign that she felt the Hall of Justice's usual chill. Usually, there was little reason for Humans to enter the Hall of Justice. They had their own courts and took responsibility for the behavior of their own citizens. But in this case the Ma'elhr clan concerned was not satisfied with Human justice, and the Humans felt enough distaste for the situation that they allowed the transfer of responsibility for the prisoner to the Ma'elhr Adjudicators. “Monsters,” the prisoner spat at the sight of the Ma'elhian. U'elh sympathized with his pain. His sister had died horribly, and a Ma'elhr had caused her death. However, as an Adjudicator, U'elh was wary of thinking that the Ma'elhr was "at fault" for her death. Yes, he had infected the girl with his symbiote, but she didn't know the circumstances of their liaison, and neither did the murderer. Had the girl claimed to be on anti-microbial pills? Had there been an unfortunate accident with the tool the Humans called a 'condom'? Or had the Ma'elhr been one of the ugly and cruel who reveled in the power given to them by biological accident, the ones who intentionally spread death with their seed? But the two principal parties were dead, and no one was left to answer those questions.
On this episode I talk to Wayne Dillon about the upcoming exciting 50th season with DCI, the return of judges to the field and advice on how to grow a high school band program. Wayne is a retired band director as well as a DCI, BOA and WGI world renown adjudicator. The post Music on Purpose E030: Wayne Dillon, DCI Adjudicator appeared first on Bryan Crisp.
In today's episode, the Adjudicator makes a new friend. Thoughts on ambush interviewing Kathleen Kennedy. We talk about the new "He-Man" series, and question whether Teela, Mistress of the Universe will be there. And, in the main event, imagine if a writer, who's apparently never seen Star Wars or understands the mythology of the characters, is given the responsibility of being the head writer for "Kenobi". You don't need to imagine, cause that's what they did. Listen as we describe a writer who thought it would be a novel surprise to tell Kenobi that Anakin was still alive! What, you say, water is wet and the sun rises in the east!!! I never knew that! Finally we queston that, with these blazing errors in continuity, omniscient characters, prop issues, and just "are you kidding me?" moments, we look at the number of people on the crew, both behind camera, in front of the camera, and in the wings and ask, "What did they know, and when did they know it?" How could Ewan McGregor, who was in the film where he learned Anakin was Vader NOT mention to either Deborah Chow, or Joby Harold (Writer) the issue with acting "surprised". So grab some Tatooine Bubble Tea and a hunk of opie jerky and enjoy.

No matter how long we've been teaching or what level of education we have, giving written feedback and ratings to an unknown student in a one-off event is a completely different setting and format than working directly with a student you know in person on a weekly basis. In this episode, we're going to look at four ways we can conscientiously prepare ourselves as adjudicators leading up to a festival or competition. (Jim Rohn) 'I had to figure out a way to turn on my heart and mind, connect them together with my body, and once I did that, everything started going up from there' (Michael Johnson) As a professional ballroom dance competitor, Michael Johnson had natural talent and a great work ethic but he found himself searching for something more, the 'it' factor that would take him to the top. That secret ingredient was authenticity, that essence that shines through when your heart, mind and body meld into one. With that journey of self discovery, came the realization that he had the vision and the tools to help others, both within and outside the dance community, find and fulfil their life plans. Michael Johnson, has mastered the art of designing his life plan, the plan that first took him to the peak of his career as a Ballroom Dance Professional Competitor, Adjudicator and Teacher and then led him to create Majic for Life, with programs to help others design and achieve their life and business goals. Michael is an author, Life Coach, Master NLP Practitioner, and a Business Mindset Consultant, who brings a unique and effective approach to taking your life to the next level using emotional education, intelligence, and mastery to deal with the challenges that life and business throw at you every day. Michael has been dancing since he was five years old and has been teaching for over 27 years. He received a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University where he also earned a scholarship to be part of their prestigious Ballroom Dance company. During his Amateur competitive career, Michael won numerous events in Latin (cha cha, samba, rumba, paso doble and jive), Standard (waltz, tango, Viennese waltz, foxtrot and quickstep), and Ten Dance (all 10 dances) and he has two US Swing titles. While competing professionally, he also was one of the top teachers in the United States winning multiple top teacher awards. In this conversation you will hear how a five year old boy accompanying his mother to her dance lessons, became a top dance competitor, discovered a passion for helping others succeed, and founded Majic for LIfe, to help others transcend their current experience and take their llves to a new level. Jonathan Lopez, Ed.D - aka "Dr. J-Lo" joins me on this episode to cover the role of the Third Party Administrator from a different perspective than covered previously. He views the role of the TPA as the "Adjudicator", and explains what he means using a sweet "John Wick" analogy! Jonathan has an interesting story, having gotten his undergrad degree in Kinesiology, then attending OCS with the Marine Corps, before going back to complete his Doctorate in Education Leadership. Oh, and he also used to own a Crossfit Gym! Not the typical path towards being an RVP of sales for a TPA...but that is the beauty of the insurance industry. There is no correct path to get in, and once you are in, you can find what interests you to carve out your own path. *Correction* - 78% of hospitalizations due to Covid were overweight/obese - not 94%. The 94% statistic was in reference to the percentage of Covid deaths that had comorbidities". --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/spencer-harlan-smith/support
