Jim Vance Debrief: One of the Today'sPlan features that Jim Vance described are the RPE of the workout and Subjective Wellness ratings the athlete can provide on a daily basis.  As a coach we can look at all the power files, paces and heart rate levels in a workout and not have insight into how the athlete experienced their workout, their day, and what might be going on that contributed to the power, heart rate and pace.  At a glance, looking at the workout in the calendar I can see the RPE.   With one click, I can see the Session Rating recorded by the athlete, the duration rating by the athlete and the intensity.  This is a great way for a coach to know the athletes perception and perspective of the session objective, duration and intensity as it relates to the athlete's goals.  If there's a mis-communication about how the sessions are designed to help the athlete achieve their goals, this is a great way to make that mis-communication visible and get the conversation started if it hasn't happened already.   The other insights that can be collected are wellness attributes that can be customized by the coach in terms of what the athlete sees and responds to.  The athlete can complete include: Diet Mood Stress Muscle soreness Sleep quality Fatigue (waking) Fatigue (before) Fatigue (activity) Satisfaction Performance The coach can also select to make the wellness ratings on the day in the calendar view.  With that feature enabled to be visible, a small yellow star appears and by simply hovering over the star, the coach can see the athlete's perspective on all of those attributes on a daily basis. When I have my weekly Skype call with my athletes, I ask them about subjective wellness items including stress, fatigue, injury or niggles.  I ask how the workouts are going from their perspective, do they make sense given the goals, etc.  But just like Jim Vance pointed out, athletes tend to forget what they felt like 6 days prior.  Having it recorded daily gives the athlete and the coach data, recorded on the day, of the athlete's subjective sense of what they are experiencing. http://303triathlon.com/kona-must-dos-by-khem/ Video of the week: Family affair at Ironman Augusta 70.3 Double win In the News is sponsored by Rudy Project.  Rudy Project has the helmets, glasses and gear to help you ride safe and look great.  Use code MHE30 to get 30% off your full price items. Welcome This is the New Year's Eve special and we have and we are closing out the year with a return guest, elite triathlon coach Jim Vance to talk about his book Triathlon 2.0.  We'll get into the interview setup in just a few. Welcome to Episode #106 of the Mile High Endurance podcast.  Mile High Endurance is your weekly connection to coaches, experts and pro athletes to help you reach your endurance and triathlon goals.  I'm your host Rich Soares and I'm glad you are joining us for another week of endurance interviews and discussion.  Bill is with family this week and Khem is in Nepal and on excursion to Everest base camp and can't wait to hear about her adventures. Hope you enjoyed the new intro music.  That was "Trip Like I Do" by Crystal Method Health IQ Our show today is sponsored by Health IQ.  Triathletes like you can get special rate life insurance with Health IQ because of your healthy lifestyle.  Health IQ has exclusive rates for those who qualify - you get additional savings by submitting actual data from race results. Last week's guest Thanks to last week's guest, ultra and adventure racer Travis Macy who is the author of The Ultra Mindset: an endurance champion's 8 core principles for success in business, sports and life.  If you haven't heard the interview yet, go back and check it out on episode #105. Discussion Teasers After the interview I'll have some thoughts on the interview with Jim Vance, his book Triathlon 2.0, considerations for the self-coached athlete, and an offer to those who want to take their training to the next level or feel like they could use the partnership of a coach this season. I also have some reflections on some of the show highlights this year and some of the interviews that were particularly memorable and informational. Last, I have a funny Christmas triathlon gift story and a ask to see if any of you have good triathlon or gear Christmas stories that you would share. That's it for the teasers, let's go to the interview. Interview Setup Jim Vance is an elite endurance sports coach, author, and sport technology and training consultant based in San Diego, California. He is the personal coach 2016 US Olympic triathlete Ben Kanute, guiding him to 2017 performances of victory at Escape from Alcatraz and Island House Triathlon, as well as a 2nd place finish at the 70.3 World Championships. Triathlon 2.0 is an extremely useful book if you are a self-coached athlete.  It will help give you concrete information on how to use data to do baseline testing, guidelines for determining goal training stress, and concepts for how to create a periodized training plan. After the interview, we'll go through a couple pages of the book to give you a practical example of how to determine goal CTL for each the bike and run using an hypothetical athlete and race distance.  As Jim emphasizes in the book, these will just be examples and do not apply to all athletes or all race situations. Let's get into the interview now. Interview Jim Vance Health IQ Ad And we are back.  Thanks again to Health IQ for sponsoring today's interview.  The Health IQ advantage is their unique mortality model that enables lower rates for health conscious people.  Just like having a good driving record saves you money on auto insurance, Health IQ uses science & data to secure lower rates on life insurance for health conscious people including runners, cyclists, strength trainers, vegans, and more. With other life insurance companies, you might be penalized for family history, BMI, and other attributes but don't get rewarded for your health conscious lifestyle.  You put in the time to train consistently, have the discipline to get out there in the cold, in the dark, you eat well, and you get the rewards of greater energy, and you feel good about yourself.  Let's face it, you spend money on race registrations, gym memberships and gear.  See if you can reward yourself further and recoup some of those investments. See how much you can save. To see if you qualify, get your free quote today at healthiq.com/milehigh or mention the promo code Mile High when you talk to a Health IQ agent. Host Discussion Topics Practical example from Triathlon 2.0 As Jim and I discussed, there is no substitute for using hard data to assess and measure performance.  This is not to say that there is not a time and place for training or racing by feel.  I'll give you a couple of examples.  I like to do some rides and runs where I never look at a bike computer or look at my watch.  If I'm thinking about the data on my device, that part of my concentration that is on the device is not on the effort or form of the training itself. In this case performance might be limited by not being able to fully concentrate on the training. Here's another example, there are times with the information on the screen might limit your performance because you curtail effort because the data is telling you are going harder or faster than your rate of perceived exertion.  Let's say your 5 minute peak power is 300 watts from previous training sessions.  You are doing a 5 minute Vo2 max effort on the bike and you look down and your average 20 second power has been 310 for the first minute of your interval.  You may not believe you are capable of carrying that effort for the remaining 4 minutes and end up backing off.  If you were training by feel and just going off RPE, you actually may have been on a breakthrough performance and could have achieved a new PR 5 minute peak power.  My daughter's high school cross country coach won't let the athletes race with watches because it can limit their competitive nature.  The concern that they may be in the heat of battle keeping pace with a team mate or a lead group, and they see that their pace is 10 seconds faster than they've trained to and they back off and let that team mate or group go. So there is a time and place for going by feel.  Here's where you want some actual data - let's say you are doing your functional threshold testing for bFTP or rFTP.  You may do the effort without looking at a watch or power meter if you have a coach or lab tech doing your test, but you damn sure want to have data to record what the power or pace is, correct? Here's another, when you work with a coach or go to prepare you periodized training plan, you need to assess your current training load and your goal training load based on your "A" race goal and "goal" for that race (meaning distance and planned result).  Just using hours of training or mileage is not a measure of actual stress because they don't account for intensity.  Plus, as we learned in the interview with Jim, preriodization is changing the type of training you are doing as you progress from phase to phase through your plan.  You start in the base phase doing general training and get more specific the closer you get to your goal.  Similarly, your intensity increases when you get into your build and peak phases altering the training load for a given duration or distance.  Having an objective measure of the starting CTL and goal CTL are critical to your plan.  You can assess your baseline CTL by using TrainingPeaks as long as you are recording all of your bike and run workouts and are using power and/or heart rate.  As Jim mentioned, you want to track these seperately. You should work with a qualified coach to help you determine what your target CTL is for your race goal and to know whether your ramp rate from the baseline to the goal given the number of weeks to your "A" race is appropriate. If you want to learn more about this process or want help planning for next season, reach out to me at Rich@milehighendurance.com   Speaking of your 2018 season, if you are listening to this episode on the day of release then you are listening to this on New Year's Eve.  A lot of races have price increases at midnight tonight.  If you haven't done it yet, fulfill a resolution a day early and save few bucks by checking out your race registration sites today and register today.  Then go out and celebrate that you've already ticked the box on one of your resolutions! 2017 Show Highlights: When I reflected on all of the interviews of 2017, I scanned through the inventory on the Content page on the MHE website.  Some of the interviews that really stood out for me: The late Terry Laughlin from Total Immersion was such an amazing contributor to our sport and the sport of swimming.  Terry revolutionized swim learning and swimming techniques to help people swim faster with less effort. Welcome to Episode #66 of the Mile High Endurance podcast.  Mile High Endurance is your weekly connection to coaches, experts and pro athletes to help you reach your endurance and triathlon goals.  We're your hosts Rich Soares, Bill Plock and Khem Suthiwan and we're glad you are back with us for another weekend endurance in the Mile High city.   Our guest interview this weekend is Simone Cordery-Cotter from Rudy Project.  Simone and I had a great one on one in-person interview at the Rudy Project office in Denver.  Simone had us set up in her office and had a number of products out on her desk for us to review.  Before we go there, let's catch up with Bill and Khem. Thank last week's guest Will Murray for the discussion on how to make the most of your workouts and fast phobia cure.  Thanks also to Bill Plock and 303 Radio for the interview with Tim Brosious and Dave Christen from Ironman.  In fact that might just tie into an update from Bill on 303 Triathlon and their support of Ironman Boulder and Team Colorado. Started to read Triathlon Science and have the following agenda developing.  I'm thinking I'm going to read through this thing and invite the authors of the various sections on the show to talk about their contribution. I also searched through the Tri-Talk archives and found a handful of episodes that line up with some of the topics in the book Triathlon Science.  We'll replay excerpts from those episodes to help us understand those topics. So I mentioned the Tri-Talk episodes that align with topics in the Triathlon Science book.  We wrapped up the conversation with David asking if we can also borrow the concept of a comparison of different hair removal products for those who desire to shave their legs.  David had published a Tri-Talk episode comparing three methods for leg hair removal. As April approaches, I was planning what I call the "Big Shave" where I shave my beard and legs.  I asked David if he would mind if I did a re-make of the Tri-Talk episode.  I know this is old hat for the ladies, but men who may be new to the sport or have never taken the big triathlon or cycling commitment of shaving their legs will get some useful information from this experiment. I have voice-recorded the experiment and it's results.  I also had my wife video the no budget video, but it actually turned out pretty good.  I'll publish the video on YouTube over the weekend and put a link on the website.  Alright, let's get into our interview.  Part of what I look forward to in the Spring is getting some new gear for the season.  In this niche consumer market, companies are constantly innovating and coming out with some of the lightest, strongest, aerodynamic and safety engineered products.  Rudy Project consistently puts out high quality, safety-first designs, in a wide selection of styles and colors.  We have Simone Cordery Cotter who is the head of marketing at Rudy Project.  We met at Rudy Project's office just before she headed off to Italy. Here's Simone Cordrey Cotter from Rudy Project. Let us know you like the content by following the Podcast on Facebook at MileHighEndurance and Twitter at @milehighpodcast.  Also be sure to make a mention on the @RudyProjectNA Facebook page or follow them on Twitter @RudyProjectNA.   By following you will get the announcement of each episode on Sunday mornings.  Be sure to like the posts and let  your friends know.  You can subscribe and get the downloads automatically on iTunes and Google play.  Easy to find.   Check out the Mile High Endurance website and milehighendurance.com for more on upcoming interviews, past interviews, resources, blog, about the show, and discounts.   Let's talk briefly about upcoming interviews. MBE and Phil Whitehead joining us to talk about a couple of topics Phil's question to the show about what his target goal TSS should be in his lead up to Kona.  We have his coach MBE to come on the show and talk about how she is advising Phil on this question Will is also the race director for The Lakesman Tri full distance in the UK.  Check it out on the MHE Main page or go to www.thelakesman.com.  It's coming up on the 18th of June. Scott Thigpen - author of the book "Trail Magic" which is about his experience with the Ride the Divide.  Scott, I am enjoying the book.  I just have about four books on my nightstand at the moment, but we are going to get you on soon. Barry Siff Dr. Jason Karp, author of the Inner Runner We took our first step in doing some planning with Terry Laughlin from Total Immersion and Mark Mastalir from Halo Neuroscience.  We are planning panel interview for the mid to late spring.  Thanks for again for joining us this week.  If this was your first time listening, we hope you enjoyed and will join us next week.  Don't forget to join us next week for the Super Anniversary Special and our two awesome guests! Welcome to Episode #65 of the Mile High Endurance podcast.  Our first guest interview is Will Murray, who is one of the smartest coaches in triathlon.  Will is a USAT Level 1 coach who has some great reads, The Four Pillars of Triathlon and Two Minutes To A Better Workout.  Will helped us dissect the book Four Pillars of Triathlon and he came on the show and helped me with a feeling of panic that I used to experience in open water swimming.  We'll talk a little about that in the interview. The focus of today's interview with Will is on the presentation that he gave in Boulder a few weeks ago and his article that was just published on TeamUSA.org. Thank last week's guests Dirk Friel and coach David Warden.  Dirk Friel for sharing ski mountaineering racing with us and the @aspensnowmass Power of Four Race and for sharing his TrainingPeaks file with us.  And thanks also to coach David Warden for confirming my growing conviction that strength training is essential for endurance, speed and training.  Stick a pin in my growing conviction (and I dare say embarrassment), that I have neglected this part of my training. I am giving myself a C- for last week's interview with David Warden.  I normally do a good deal of research on my guests and I got complacent with David.   I am so embarrassed that I did not do my research better for the David Warden interview, of all interviews.  How did I not know that he contributed to the book and how I did not have a copy is beyond me. I am guilty of complacency and am going to make it up to you.   I ordered and have received my copy of Triathlon Science. It is a very comprehensive body of work with a collection of expert coaches, thought leaders and physicians. I just cracked it this week, but you can bet I'll be sharing new insights. The other follow up from David's interview is the offer he made to use his old episodes.  I'm going to research this episode and put some options for the listeners on Twitter Poll.  If you do not already follow @milehighpodcast to get the twitter polls. One episode that we are definitely doing next is what I'm titling "the big shave".  We'll get David's episode on which method of hair removal is most effective.  David gave me permission to essentially do a cover band remake of the test.  I'm going to also add to this a summary of online research on what the possible reasons are that men (some men) go to the length of shaving their legs.  We will attempt to answer the question - Why the "F" would you do that? Folks if you live here in Colorado, you are going to want to hear about the Team Colorado program.  Regardless you do not want to miss this interview and I do not want it to get stale, so it is going to come on right after the Will Murray interview. Alright, let's get into our two interviews today.  If you have not heard previous interview (even if you have) you are in for a treat here.  Will is a USAT triathlon coach with a specialty as a mental skills coach.  He is a psychologist by training and has authored numerous articles and books.  I recommend that you go to the MHE endurance website and check the links to Will's recent article and book on the Main page and there are several links to his work on the Resources page.  If you are listening from your laptop, click on over there and read the articles.  There are several Team USA links under the Swimming Headline that are Wills.  There is also a new one under the General Resources Heading. I don't want to steal too much from the interview.  Let's get into the interview. milehighpodcast. Simone Cordery-Cotter of Rudy Project is going to talk to us about how to equip yourself with equipment that has the latest safety engineering and designs MBE and Phil Whitehead joining us to talk about a couple of topics Phil's question to the show about what his target goal TSS should be in his lead up to Kona. Longer term, I want to share that we are in the early stages of ideation around a collaboration of experts to help us understand how important neural development is in our performance, endurance and more. I need to scoot here.  I'm doing a 2 hour brick with Brady Nelson and Aaron Monroe and I need to get myself over to Cherry Creek High School.  We're going to ride the CC Trail and Res roads and then do a 30 minute run after. I brought Jim onto our podcast because he has been at the forefront in research of Power Running.  Many believe that when power can be effectively measured in running, as has been cone in cycling, it will be a major game changer.  In sports science thus far; heart rate is the most effective metric used to identify work relative to performance.  This is an interesting time in endurance sport technology and our goal is to share some insight as to the potential of power as it applies to running performance. “All records, from 100 meters to the Marathon will drop, when we are able to effectively measure power in training”.
