Điều đầu tiên là có một công việc tại phố Wall, và điều cuối cùng là có được mức thu nhập hơn 1 triệu USD mỗi năm. “Câu “tiền bạc không mua được hạnh phúc” nghe thật lý thuyết. In 1994, two Ohio University graduatesarrived separately in New York City to pursue careers in journalism. Unfortunately, they both failed typing tests and their paths went in very different directions than originally planned. Turney Duff lived hard and fast on Wall Street with million dollar bonuses and a nightlife that stopped party girl Tara Reid in her tracks, followed by a not surprising stint (or two) in rehab and a New York Times Best Selling tell-all book called, The Buy Side. The other is Briana and, well, we all know her story and it's not THAT interesting. Anyway, the two finally meet up after living eerily parallel lives that never intersected in a memorable way - at least not for Turney - until now.  These are their stories.

Buck and PJ discuss Rex Tillerson’s great relief, doubts about growth in Asia, and the surveillance culture we now live in where everybody knows your name…and a whole lot more. PJ tells you why some people may even welcome the idea of unfettered spying on citizens by governments everywhere. Stansberry Research analyst Bill Shaw joins the program to weigh in on gold and his recent article in American Consequences. It’s a first-person story about the state of subprime auto loans and late-night adventures with a repo man on the streets of Baltimore. Buck asks Bill which cars the midnight riders are towing away, and the answer is a tell-tale sign of a far too stretched consumer. Turney Duff, author of the Buy Side and contributor to American Consequences, calls in to tell PJ and Buck about the discussions he just had with the smartest traders he knows on Wall Street to get their opinion on the China trade. Turney sheds some light as to why some of the most experienced people in finance have completely missed the big move in Asia.

Turney Duff. I first read Turney Duff’s New York Times bestselling book, The Buy Side, at some point in college, and was attracted to not only his story but his authenticity. Here’s a guy that lived a very extravagant lifestyle, and eventually, after quite a rollercoaster ride, turned down a job that would have made him seven figures a year, because he knew he would be happier without it. Turney spent fifteen years as a trader on Wall Street, eventually pulling in seven figures a year, but also had a worsening addiction to cocaine. Like a lot of people, he thought that all of his problems would be solved with more money, but when more money came, the problems never went away. It took the second trip to rehab and barely any money in his bank account for him to realize that what he really wanted was not the extravagant life he lived as a Wall Street trader, but his original dream to be a writer. He’s much happier now making far less money, wanting less, and not trying to be liked by everyone than he was during his fifteen years as a trader.

This week we spent some time with New York Times Best-Selling Author Turney Duff. His monikers not only include best selling author, but former Wall Street Trader, Hedge Fund co-Founder, Technical Adviser / Consultant for the Showtime television show Billions and contributor to CNBC.  Over the course of his career there is little that he hasn’t seen and fortunately for his fans he writes about it.   In the first segment, we talk story telling and his start as a Wall Street Trader. We discuss how as people we establish ‘lines’ that we won’t ever cross, and then how life tests that resolve and more times than not we cross our own lines. He shares his perspective about the pursuit of happiness, and how he traded that pursuit for a pursuit of serenity. He shares his view about the difference between IQ and EQ and how his talent for gauging a room was really what assisted most in his success.  The discussion about the difference is a game changer.   In the second segment we discuss his creative process and the inspiration behind his book; The Buy Side. He shares the experience of arranging his book deal with Randon House and how he was able to find the creative starting point that ended up becoming his book. He stresses the need to not trying to impress anyone and how this ended up being the door for his story that shows both his flaws and his humanity.  Turney’s experience is evidence that no matter your position or experiences in life, it’s never too late to follow a passion and ultimately turn it into your career!  You have a creative pull and would like to hear from someone that followed their passion against all odds? I'd rather be an alien. I'd rather be myself. Than be liked. It makes sense... why you'd want to be liked. Think about it. From an evolutionary standpoint, when you're liked, you're safe. You're in the tribe. People protect you. But now, I'd rather be an alien. I don't want stress. I don't want to worry, "Do I fit in?" There are consequences to being liked. You start compromising. You stop taking risks. You follow the herd. You get stuck in a crappy job at a fluorescently lit cubicle. Where they can watch you. You stop taking risks. You wonder, "Is this ok?" Ok to who? Not you. Not the only person who matters. I'd rather be an alien. If I'm an alien, I can act like I just landed here. And I'm not supposed to know if I fit in. I'm forced to be myself. No trying. Just forced. I can surrender. My guest today, used to be in a tribe. I won't say it's the worst one. But it's bad. Turney Duff is the New York Times bestselling author of, The Buy Side: A Wall Street Trader's Tale of Spectacular Excess, where he tells the truth. He bleeds. "Look, chances are people aren't going to like me after I tell the story, so at no point am I ever, ever, ever going to try to get the reader to like me," Turney says. But that wasn't easy. Because he spent his whole life trying to be liked. "I've always had this 'Nobody loves me' syndrome. I had this fear of ordinary, fear of being normal." On Wall Street, Turney was a trader. But he wasn't just trading stocks. He traded sleep, health, relationships, money. All of it for drugs. He was afraid. He'd go to hotel rooms and snort cocaine by himself. But nothing was enough. He made $2 million dollars a year. He thought, "If I could just make three million dollars a year, all of my problems would be solved." But before that he said, "If I could just make fifty thousand dollars a year, all of my problems would be solved. All of them." He wanted to be a journalist. But he traded. A lot of people trade. Maybe you traded. But it's not too late. You can choose yourself. There are three things you need to know to choose yourself. And I got these from my interview with Turney. He'll show you. He'll prove to you it's not too late. I believe in you. Three steps to (finally) choose yourself: 1) Don't try to be liked. When Turney wrote this book, he knew people would stop liking him. Or hate him. He told it anyway. And it saved his life.  That's what saved my life too. Bleeding on the pages. Telling my truth. Listen at [2:35] to learn how to cure something in yourself too. 2) Want less. Wanting more hurts. Because you trick your brain into believing you don't have enough. And start feeling sorry for yourself. Instead of grateful for what you do have. So I want less.  Listen at [6:28]. Turney explains why wanting more destroys you. 3) Build up your gut. We have instincts. And our bodies speak to us. But we're good at ignoring it. The pain. We think stomach aches are just stomach aches. But it's an accumulation abuse. Stress. Worry. Fear. You have to listen to your body. Notice the pain. Turney says, "I became successful on the trading desk because I had great instincts, and I used my gut. Along the way I lost that." Listen at [51:50] to hear how he got his gut back. After everything, I ask him, "Has it worked out?" "I'll tell you this..." Listen here for my interview with Turney. You'll learn how to choose yourself. And you'll hear how Turney did it himself. How he turned his back on his tribe, his drugs, his money.  It took him most of his life. But he did it. You can too. ------------What do YOU think of the show? Episode 057: Turney Duff – Wall Street, Addiction, Rehab, Best-Selling Author, TV Show Consultant This episode different from the normal Learning Leader Show episode…  Turney contacted me via my website (the contact form www.LearningLeader.com) after he saw the John LeFevre episode published.  He mentioned that he was a fellow Ohio University Bobcat and he had followed my football career.  From this common bond, we developed a friendship and I thought it would be a great idea to record an episode together.  I’m really glad we did it! Best-selling author Bethany McLean said it best: “Turney Duff is a natural storyteller, and his tale of how a naive kid from Maine traded in L.L. Bean for Armani and got sucked into the seamy side of Wall Street is almost impossible to put down. The book is by turns hilarious, harrowing, maddening, and illuminating. After this debut, the smart money will be on Duff.” “The Buy Side” is now on Amazon's 2013 Best Books of the Year: Business & Investing Episode 057: Turney Duff – Wall Street, Addiction, Rehab, Best-Selling Author, TV Show Consultant Subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher Radio   The Learning Leader Show “I wanted to put good karma in the universe.” – Turney Duff, describing why he originally reached out to Brian Koppelman. Some Questions I Ask: What one common characteristic do all high achievers leaders share? How did you get the job working with Brian Koppelman on the TV show Billions? What is a character study and what was it like doing them with Damian Lewis (star of Homeland and now Billions)? How have you discussed your past issues with drugs and alcohol with your daughter? Do you fear relapsing? What is the day to day life of someone on Wall Street? In This Episode, You Will Learn: How a Google alert help our paths cross The details behind filming a TV show and what goes into it How Turney was hired to consult on the TV show Billions How Turney wrote his book, “The Buy Side” and what it’s all about The phone call that changed his life His struggles with addiction to drugs and alcohol His journey of sobriety and how great he is doing right now  “Serenity can be sustained, happiness cannot.  My goal is serenity.” – Turney Duff Continue Learning Read:  The Buy Side Go To: TurneyDuff.com Follow Turney on Twitter: @turneyduff You may also like these episodes: Episode 001: How To Become A Master Connector With Jayson Gaignard From MasterMind Talks Episode 044: John LeFevre – @GSElevator: This Episode Might Offend You Episode 004: How Todd Wagner (and Mark Cuban) Sold Broadcast.com To Yahoo! Episode edited by the great J Scott Donnell Picture from hitc.com Bio From TurneyDuff.com The Buy Side, by former Galleon Group trader Turney Duff, portrays an after-hours Wall Street culture where drugs and sex are rampant and billions in trading commissions flow to those who dangle the most enticements. A remarkable writing debut, filled with indelible moments, The Buy Side shows as no book ever has the rewards – and dizzying temptations – of making a living on the Street. Growing up in the 1980’s Turney Duff was your average kid from Kennebunk, Maine, eager to expand his horizons. After trying – and failing – to land a job as a journalist, he secured a trainee position at Morgan Stanley and got his first feel for the pecking order that exists in the trading pits. Those on the “buy side,” the traders who make large bets on whether a stock will rise or fall, are the “alphas” and those on the “sell side,” the brokers who handle their business, are eager to please. How eager to please was brought home stunningly to Turney in 1999 when he arrived at the Galleon Group, a colossal hedge-fund management firm run by secretive founder Raj Rajaratnam. Finally in a position to trade on his own, Turney was encouraged to socialize with the sell side and siphon from his new broker friends as much information as possible. Soon he was not just vacuuming up valuable tips but also being lured into a variety of hedonistic pursuits. Naïve enough to believe he could keep up the lifestyle without paying a price, he managed to keep an eye on his buy-and-sell charts and, meanwhile, pondered the strange goings on at Galleon, where tens of millions were being made each week in sometimes mysterious ways. At his next positions, at Argus Partners and J.L. Berkowitz, Turney climbed to even higher heights – and, as it turned out, plummeted to even lower depths – as, by day, he solidified his reputation as one of the Street’s most powerful healthcare traders, and by night, he blazed a path through the city’s nightclubs, showing off his social genius and voraciously inhaling any drug that would fill the void he felt inside. A mesmerizingly immersive journey through Wall Street’s first millennial decade, and a poignant self-portrait by a young man who surely would have destroyed himself were it not for his decision to walk away from a seven-figure annual income, The Buy Side is one of the best coming-of-age-on-the-Street books ever written.

Episode 044: John LeFevre - @GSElevator: This Episode Might Offend You This episode is different from any other I’ve recorded for The Learning Leader Show.  Turney Duff describes my guest best for CNBC: “In some memoirs, the author tries to pull back the curtain to provide a glimpse into a particular time and place, but LeFevre attempts to rip the drapes right off. He gives a naked look at how business in the world of finance is conducted. LeFevre captures the "Glengarry Glen Ross"-type of attitude that some believe is required to be successful on Wall Street. He doesn't shy away from witnessing and partaking in some of the seedier antics of sharing non-public information, price-fixing, misogyny, drug use and good old-fashion cut-throat office politics.” John LeFevre created the Goldman Sachs Elevator Twitter account (@GSElevator) as a parody of banking culture. He tweeted anonymously for years as he gained hundreds of thousands of followers with his notoriously outrageous and often offensive tweets. He was eventually revealed as the author of the account.  That Twitter account propelled him to earn a six figure book deal titled, “Straight to Hell: True Tales of Deviance, Debauchery, and Billion-Dollar Deals.” Episode 044: John LeFevre - @GSElevator: This Episode Might Offend You Subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher Radio. The Learning Leader Show “I feel an obligation to call out social injustices.” – John LeFevre Some Questions I Ask: What are the specific reasons behind your success? What was your strategy behind growing the @GSElevator Twitter account? Are you okay with being polarizing? What did you do with your first bonus check?
