In this video, I talk about key ideas from Jeff Haden's book The Motivation Myth and share my take on how motivation really works in language learning.
How to be a bit more charming? Some people could easily gain the trust of everyone and create a positive image of themselves? Jeff Haden, one of the most influential people on LinkedIn and the author of almost 30 business and communication books, explained how they do it. It turns out they know some simple secrets, and today you have a chance to discover them all. Have you ever noticed, for example, that such people are not afraid to look silly? They're not afraid to be awkward. Curiously enough, people respect them even more because of this. If you're not shy to show your weaknesses, people won't laugh at you. So, guys, here're nine essential characteristics that make any person look more confident and charming. TIMESTAMPS: They're not afraid to lose 0:52 They show they're glad to meet you 1:28 They look for mutual understanding 2:09 They use the power of touch 2:47 They know how to use facial expressions and gestures 3:41 They're not afraid to look silly 4:19 They're good at asking questions 4:54 They always remember names 5:38 They listen more and talk less 6:27 #becharming #yourimage #howtobecharismatic SUMMARY: Charming people don't try to win at everything. On the contrary, their aim is to give more without expecting anything in return. For them, it's not difficult to admit their mistakes, failures, or talk about their weaknesses. Maintaining eye contact is important in a conversation, and people who have charisma know this for sure. They smile when you smile. They frown or nod when you do. Most people unconsciously look for contradictions and disagreements, which can lead to a dispute rather than a conversation. Charismatic people always seek common ground with everybody. A touch is a powerful tool that helps people understand their emotions better. In a recent experiment, scientists tried to express 12 emotions by touching their interlocutors without words. In 50-83% of the cases, these feelings were expressed correctly. Charming people express their feelings incredibly well and accurately. They can turn even the most boring story into an enthralling conversation. Charming people can make you talk about yourself easily. They don't hesitate to ask questions and talk openly about themselves as well. These people genuinely want to know what you're thinking, and this makes them trustworthy. Charismatic people always remember names and other small details about others very accurately. Charming people know how to listen, and they love listening more than talking. That's how they learn more interesting details about a person and find something in common. Jeff Haden LinkedIn Profile The Motivation Myth: How High Achievers Really Set Themselves Up to Win`
This classic episode of the Elevate Podcast features Jeff Hadne. Jeff's first paid ghostwriting job was writing a press release for a startup. Since then he's written about real estate, management, process improvement, finance and investing. He's ghostwritten books on subjects as diverse as breastfeeding, hydroponics, horticulture and magic. After an intriguing discussion with Metallica guitarist, Kirk Hammett, plus dozens of interviews with other incredibly successful people, Jeff decided to pull back the veil on what it really means to “get motivated” and reach goals. These insights led him to write and publish his own book The Motivation Myth. As Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Give and Take writes, “Jeff Haden knows what many people don't: that success is less about searching for motivation and more about muddling through until you achieve something motivating. This clear, enjoyable book has plenty of advice on how to do that.” He's also an avid cyclist (which he hated when he first started), ghostwrote a eulogy and writes an Inc. column that attracts over 20 million readers.

We've all heard, comparison is the thief of joy. But what if we can flip the script and think about what two comparisons really matter when it comes to creating fulfilled happiness. Tune in today to learn more. Transcript: Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life. I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and my friend C Lee sent me an INC. Article the other day all about happiness. What caught my attention was the idea of comparison. We've all heard, comparison is the thief of joy. And we've chatted all about comparison in past episodes. And we know that part of the happiness equation is satisfaction. Appreciating what you have more than you pine for what you want. So, how can comparison be a good thing? When it comes to comparison, this article by @JEFF_HADEN points out that there are only two comparisons that really matter when it comes to creating fulfilled happiness. He says “The first is who you are today and who you were in the past. Making that comparison will remind you just how far you've come.” And “[t]he second is who you are today and who you hope to someday become. Making that comparison will keep you focused on doing the things that make you feel more fulfilled, grateful, and happy.” I love this and I think he's right on point. We can get so caught up in comparisonitis and thinking that “things” make us happy. It's literally how our brains are wired. But if we look at the science, what we “think” will make us happy - like a brand new car - just won't. And over time, we are back on the hedonic treadmill wanting more. Which is why placing our value on experiences is so important. I wanted to bring this up now, as we enter November and the holiday shopping season starts to really ramp up. It's so easy to get sucked into those Instagram ads. But if we can take a pause and think about happiness before we hit the “buy now” button, maybe we'll be a little happier for it. Now, if you've got some cash burning a hole in your pocket, our Thanksgiving Kindness Cards just hit the website and they are a great way to show gratitude to friends, customers and family. Sprinkling a little kindness in your bubble today. Ten different factors will determine how quickly your ads pay off. Do your ads capture attention or are they easy to ignore? Do your ads speak to a felt need, or are you answering a question no one was asking? Are you a known, trusted, and respected seller? Is the brand you sell known, trusted, and respected? What percentage of the public will ever – in their lifetime – purchase a product or service in your category? How often does the average person need to buy what you sell? Does your ad make the customer feel any urgency due to low price or limited availability? What percentage of the public knows your name and what you sell? In your category, what name will customers typically think of first and feel the best about? What percentage of the public considers you to be their preferred provider? Your answers to questions 5 & 6 indicate your product purchase cycle. Here are those questions again: “5. What percentage of the public will ever – in their lifetime – purchase a product or service in your category?” “6. How often does the average person buy what you sell?” Generally speaking, the longer your product purchase cycle, the longer it will take before your mass-media ads deliver a positive R.O.I. Online ads, however, work immediately. But will the customer type your name into the search block? If they do, you have already won the heart of that customer. They have chosen you as their preferred provider. This means you will enjoy an extremely low cost-per-click with a high conversion rate. But if they type the name of your competitor into the search block, then it will be your competitor that enjoys an extremely low cost-per-click and a high conversion rate. The starting pistol fires the moment a customer types your category into the search block instead of your name or the name of a competitor. Their computer screen overflows with the names of companies making them offers. If they see a name they recognize, the footrace is over in moments. But if no name is recognized, the names of several runners will be clicked. Every runner will pay a high cost-per-click due to gambling on an “unbranded” keyword. But only one runner will take home the prize money. Costs-per-click have never been higher. Mass media costs have never been lower. If you sell a product or a service with a long purchase cycle, the bad news about mass media is that it will take 3 to 6 months of weekly advertising before you begin to gain any real momentum. The good news is that the longer you use mass media, the better it works.1 This is how you make your name the one that customers type into the search block. I believe:Every advertiser should have a website. Every advertiser should be willing to pay for 100% of the clicks when a customer types their nameinto the search block Organic results are no longer enough. You've got to pay the price for your name to be seen. Your cost-per-click is extremely low when your name is typed into the search block. (I'll tell you about #6 in a minute.) Ten years ago, Inc. magazine published an article by Jeff Haden titled, “How Google is Killing Organic Search.” “If your business depends on customers finding you in search results, you're in trouble–and it's likely to get worse. If case you haven't noticed, pay-per-click ads are slowly taking over Google's search engine results. That should come as no surprise since approximately 97% of Google's revenues are generated by its core business, search engine advertising; Google is understandably protecting and extending its revenue turf… If you're a business that depends on organic, unpaid search results to drive traffic, you've undoubtedly seen a steady decline in visitors and sales.” 6. The cost-per-click is extremely high when you compete for unbranded “category” keywords such as “air conditioning repair.” A Tale of Two A/C Companies“It was the best of times, it was the worst of...

Small Business, MSNBC, and CNBC.It's comforting to imagine that superstars in their fields were just born better equipped than the rest of us. When a co-worker loses 20 pounds, or a friend runs a marathon while completing a huge project at work, we assume they have more grit, more willpower, more innate talent, and above all, more motivation to see their goals through. But that's not at actually true, as popular Inc.com columnist Jeff Haden proves. "Motivation" as we know it is a myth. Motivation isn't the special sauce that we require at the beginning of any major change. In fact, motivation is a result of process, not a cause. The ladies discuss whether women are less happy than they used to be because of unrealistic expectations about life created by social media. Women already feel pressured to “have it all”, but does the content on social media make us feel like we're not doing enough or falling behind those who appear to be living their best life? How do we define happiness and what do we really need to be happy? Is it possible to be happy all the time and would quitting or taking a break from social media help achieve this? Are the relationships we have on social media authentic or does liking, following, and comparing ourselves to the curated and filtered view of other people's lives fuel our own unhappiness? In this episode, Monah, Nushy Rose, and Sophie Hannah explore our complicated relationship with social media and look at how we can all take charge of our own future happiness.--------------------------------------- FOLLOW THE CONVERSATION #EthnicallySpeakingInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/unitedmelanincoYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/UnitedMelaninGroupTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8H5Jx9b/Twitter: https://instagram.com/unitedmelanincoFacebook: https://facebook.com/unitedmelanincoLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/unitedmelaninco/Get in touch with us: ethnicallyspeaking@unitedmelaningroup.com---------------------------------------- LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE https://www.inquirer.com/philly/health/we-arent-as-happy-as-we-used-to-be-heres-what-could-help-20180122.html(Article – We aren't as happy as we used to be. Believe it or not, the more awkward a conversation seems, the more people enjoy it.In this episode, Dave reviews the research from the Journal of Personality and Socal Psychology which explains why you should ditch small talk and engage in more awkward and insightful conversations.Jeff Haden's article in Inc. Magazine inspired this episode.
Guest Mariya Rosberg felt as though she had lived a somewhat sheltered beginning of life. At college, she leaned into everything that could expand her world, from languages to travel and found herself particularly drawn to ideas around gender equity. She married classwork in gender studies with real-world applications both on campus and abroad. She always felt the pull to adventure and believed she would just follow her free spirit into the life of a wanderer. After a little independent travel, she landed in the only spot that made sense to that free spirit: Manhattan's West Village. She steeped herself in the city's history and the romantic notions of having a shared lived experience with countless other free spirits. Yet she also felt she needed to “get serious.” She answered an ad in the newspaper and began a life in management consulting. Interestingly, she was able to feed her wanderlust through her international clients and started putting some sort of structure to her life. Adding motherhood to the mix allowed her to confront the gender issues that had long interested her. Eventually she was able to marry this with her business life and mentor others who were trying to do it all.In this episode, find out from Mariya how sometimes listening to that which calls you to venture out and applying it closer to home can do a world of good…on ROADS TAKEN...with Leslie Jennings Rowley. About This Episode's GuestMariya Rosberg has over 20 years of experience serving leading investment and universal banks in the US, Europe, and Latin America. She is currently a partner at Oliver Wyman, where she is head of Americas Corporate and Institutional Banking and also helps drive crucial decisions for the future of the firm, particularly mentoring colleagues navigating parenthood and consulting. For these and other Herculean efforts she was named a Working Mother of the Year by Working Mother magazine. She lives in Westchester County with her husband and their twins. It's comforting to imagine that superstars in their fields were just born better equipped than the rest of us. When a co-worker loses 20 pounds, or a friend runs a marathon while completing a huge project at work, we assume they have more grit, more willpower, more innate talent, and above all, more motivation to see their goals through. But that's not actually true, as popular Inc.com columnist Jeff Haden proves. "Motivation" as we know it is a myth. Motivation isn't the special sauce that we require at the beginning of any major change. In fact, motivation is a result of the process, not a cause. Understanding this will change the way you approach any obstacle or big goal. Haden shows us how to reframe our thinking about the relationship of motivation to success. He meets us at our level--at the beginning of any big goal we have for our lives, a little anxious and unsure about our way forward, a little burned by self-help books and strategies that have failed us in the past—and offers practical advice that anyone can use to stop stalling and start working on those dreams. Haden takes the mystery out of accomplishment, proving that success isn't about spiritual awakening or a lightning bolt of inspiration --as Tony Robbins and adherents of The Secret believe--but instead, about clear and repeatable processes. Using his own advice, Haden has consistently drawn 2 million readers a month to his posts, completed a 107-mile long mountain bike race, and lost 10 pounds in a month. Success isn't for the uniquely-qualified; it's possible for any person who understands the true nature of motivation. Jeff Haden can help you transcend average and make lasting positive changes in your life. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/samip-ghimire/support

Today on the podcast, I discuss one major takeaway I had from reading Jeff Haden's 'Motivation Myth' and why productive resting has changed my work day.
Jeff Haden is the Best-selling author of The Motivation Myth, LinkedIn Influencer, Inc. Magazine Contributing Editor and Speaker. The Motivation Myth overturns the beloved (but false) idea that motivation leads to success, instead, small successes lead to constant motivation - and let you achieve your biggest goals while also having more fun."Jeff Haden is one of the biggest writers working online today not because he's a genius but because he follows the advice in this book. It's not about motivation, it's about process--and hard work."—Ryan Holiday, author of The Obstacle is the Way and Ego is the EnemyIt's comforting to imagine that superstars in their fields were just born better equipped than the rest of us. Have you ever really considered, “Am I made of the stuff to achieve really great things? Are my dreams realistic?” It turns out, there is quite a difference between how famous, quite accomplished people consider motivation and goals and the way everyday people do. The good news? We can learn something from these stellar humans and apply it to create more of the life we really want for ourselves. In this conversation, we talk with the ever curious author Jeff Haden to hear what he's learned by studying famous people – and how they structure their lives that can make a sweeping difference to our own.
In today's episode, we're talking to Jeff Haden, a contributing editor at Inc Magazine, ghostwriter to some of the world's top CEOs & entrepreneurs, speaker, and author of his own upcoming business book… This interview was very special to me—Jeff was the first person to publish my work somewhere other than just my own blog & the blogs of startups I knew… he took an article I wrote for the Buffer Blog and published it to his column on Inc Magazine, which served as the catalyst for me being able to get columns on all the other major publications afterwards. In many ways, Jeff is where my journey into writing turned up a notch. After a few years of stoking the fire with this side hustle, his writing career began to take off… he'd go on to become a highly sought-after ghostwriter to some of the world's most recognizable CEO's and business leaders who wanted to write books. Jeff built relationships with editors at several online publications and eventually found himself being a contributing editor to Inc Magazine…
