American Consequences Editor-in-Chief and best-selling author P.J. O'Rourke joins Trish in this episode and they dive into a variety of topics, including his updated blockbuster book Eat the Rich that he's giving away for free at freepjbook.com. P.J. talks with Trish about the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, the state of small businesses, masks, shutdowns, and inflated prices of goods and services. P.J. isn't President Biden's biggest fan and worries that the administration will impose more lockdowns should health concerns continue. Human nature shows us that people in power like to exercise that power, says P.J., and while politicians are attempting to uphold the health and safety of our country (no easy feat), they're still human and delight in shutdowns… perpetuating said power. With COVID-19 variants on the rise, small businesses can't withstand another shutdown, and the country can't continue to print money and prop them up… It's a recipe on how to tear this country apart, even more so than it already is. President Biden needs to show leadership that unifies. Inflation, a pandemic, human nature, and general discourse has us all on the edge of our proverbial seats.
From 2009 comes this interview with P.J. O'Rourke, a well-known voice to many public radio listeners. In this conversation, we talk about "P.J. O'Rourke on 'The Wealth of Nations' - Books that changed the world," which concerns Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations," a 2-volume 900-page work that was published in 1776.
Eat the Rich: A Treatise on Economics by P. J. O'Rourke. From our ACU archive. This Audiobook excerpt serves as an introduction to this book. Purchase the book or find on Audible. In the tradition of his contemporary classic Parliament of Whores, the man who The Wall Street Journal calls "the funniest writer in America" is back with Eat the Rich, in which he takes on the global economy. P. J. O'Rourke leads you on an hysterical whirlwind world tour from the "good capitalism" of Wall Street to the "bad socialism" of Cuba in search of the answer to an age-old question: "Why do some places prosper and thrive, while others just suck?" With stops in Albania, Sweden, Hong Kong, Moscow, and Tanzania, P.J. brings along his incomparable wit and finds hilarity wherever he goes.
In the aftermath of the Capitol Siege, Americans need to reflect and reconcile that with great freedom comes great responsibility. In this episode, Trish, the legendary P.J. O’Rourke, and special guest former U.S. Representative Ron Paul delve into listener questions to detangle the current political nightmare. The discussion touches upon our ever-growing partisan divisiveness, the accountability of Big Tech, and questions around the First Amendment. In our final episode before US voters decide whether or not to renew Donald Trump’s lease on the White House, we look at whether a more reasonable – or at least less obviously deranged – politics is still possible. We’re joined by the satirist PJ O’Rourke, whose new book, ‘A Cry from the Far Middle’, wonders how America got so divided – and if it ever wasn’t. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
All eyes are on America in the lead up to November 3. When the presidential race comes to an end one thing is certain, the US will be fractured. If Donald Trump is re-elected, outrage by left-wing political and media sophisticates will further alienate tens of millions of Americans who do not share their values. Yet, if Joe Biden wins, a display of anything other than humility would be equally alienating and would divide even more deeply a crisis-ridden nation. How has it come to this? What is the likely path the US will take, both at home and abroad, once the pandemic passes? Are these two old men really the best America has to offer? On Thursday, 1 October at 9 am we hosted a US Election election special with PJ O'Rourke & Conrad Black to hear two strikingly different views of how the September 30 Presidential debate went down and which candidate they thought would, or should, win the 2020 US Presidential Election.

J. O'Rourke in his book Holidays In Hell;"It has always been easier to destroy than to create", spoken by Spock in Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan but written by Gene Roddenberry, Harve Bennett, Jack B. P.J. O’Rourke has written nineteen books (including some New York Times bestsellers) and his most recent one, None Of My Business, is a must read. He explains money, banking, assets, liabilities and why he’s not rich and neither are you (there is always humor in everything he writes and says!). You can hear the passion of Miami in his voice throughout our conversation as he continues to give the school props. Plus, his stories about late professor David Frazier (giving him a D on a mid-term paper, turning his life around and creating a long-term bond) and Dr. Shriver are fantastic. He never knew that Dr. Shriver knew who he was, but he sure did. We even chuckle together about what technology meant to him as a blossoming writer – long hand, not even a typewriter and no spell check. We begin the conversation discussing what gives him inspiration in writing on subjects.

P.J. O’Rourke offers comedic relief about the state of our politics from his unique journalistic perspective influenced by the “sunshine” of the 1960s. O’Rourke has worked for many notable publications such as the National Lampoon and Rolling Stone Magazine. He has had two New York Times #1 Bestsellers; Parliament of Whores and Give War a Chance. He is currently a correspondent for the Atlantic as well as the H.L. Mencken Research Fellow at the Cato Institute. Why does show business and left-wing politics have an affinity for each other? What happened to politics in the 1960s? How did the baby boomers ruin the world? What does O’Rourke think of the state of journalism today? Buck is joined by guest co-host PJ O’Rourke for an American Consequences takeover of the Stansberry Investor Hour. PJ is the rabble rousing best-selling author of titles like Eat the Rich, Give War a Chance, and How the Hell Did This Happen? Buck and PJ discuss Rex Tillerson’s great relief, doubts about growth in Asia, and the surveillance culture we now live in where everybody knows your name…and a whole lot more. PJ tells you why some people may even welcome the idea of unfettered spying on citizens by governments everywhere. Stansberry Research analyst Bill Shaw joins the program to weigh in on gold and his recent article in American Consequences. It’s a first-person story about the state of subprime auto loans and late-night adventures with a repo man on the streets of Baltimore. Buck asks Bill which cars the midnight riders are towing away, and the answer is a tell-tale sign of a far too stretched consumer. Turney Duff, author of the Buy Side and contributor to American Consequences, calls in to tell PJ and Buck about the discussions he just had with the smartest traders he knows on Wall Street to get their opinion on the China trade. Turney sheds some light as to why some of the most experienced people in finance have completely missed the big move in Asia.
Wherein the host, me, argues that we used to be much less humorless 20-30 years ago. Xenophobia was considered amusing and it was simply a given that the West is the best. To prove this, I go over some examples of anti-PC comedy from the 70s (PJ O’Rourke’s National Lampoon essay “Foreigners Around the World”) and use it to not only prove that xenophobia can be amusing but also that the West is inarguably superior to everywhere else in the world.
PJ told me some unconventional ways to vote for president. “Who would you road trip with?” A lot of people might think they’d say Trump, “but think again,” he said. I didn’t vote. Guest Co-Host and Chief Editor of American Consequences magazine, PJ O’Rourke, sits in with Buck to welcome Senior Editor of Extreme Value Dan Ferris, and author Turney Duff of the best-selling Wall Street expose’, The Buy Side. Dan tells you why Wal-Mart is still a big threat to Amazon’s business, and why you might be better off investing with strong brick and mortar operations when it comes to the retail sector. PJ and Dan reveal a connection between Sears and Amazon that most people would miss…and what could be a future indicator of trouble for Amazon. Turney Duff calls in to explain why investing in Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) is something that most investors should stay away from, and how you can beat Wall Street at their own game by knowing when to short the hype surrounding new IPO issues.
Buck is joined by guest co-host PJ O’Rourke to discuss the uproar in Silicon Valley over the Google “anti-diversity memo” and what to really make of the idea that there are innate leadership differences between genders. PJ reveals the apparent “lemming run” of the Democratic party and what the lack of current leadership means going forward. Buck recalls his “jaw on the floor” moment when he met Anthony “The Mooch” Scaramucci and how this reflects on the Trump administration. Special guest Dinesh D’Souza, conservative thinker and author of The Roots of Obama’s Rage is out with a new book, The Big Lie, since he survived a prison scare with Obama’s Justice Department in 2014. “Arianna” makes an appearance in the mailbag to respond to listener comments.

This week we’re dusting off a favorite Point of Inquiry episode from three years ago: Josh Zepps' conversation with P.J. O'Rourke – humorist, cultural commentator and bestselling author of sixteen books. Originally broadcast in December of 2013, this episode's subject matter is remarkably relevant for this current political and cultural moment, as we prepare for the presidency of a man whose campaign was based on the promise to return America to a golden age that really never existed. O’Rourke is an early proponent of "gonzo journalism" and is a self described libertarian, he’s served as editor-in-chief of National Lampoon, and has spent 20 years reporting for Rolling Stone and The Atlantic as the worlds only "trouble spot humorist" going to wars, riots, rebellions, and other "Holidays in Hell" in more than 40 countries. O'Rourke is the H.L. Mencken Research Fellow at the Cato Institute and a frequent panelist on National Public Radio's game show Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! In this episode they discuss everything from abortion and privacy, to the party following the fall of the Berlin Wall, to the looting of the Baghdad Museum. They discuss American values both of individualism and the fundamental shared American mentality of dissatisfaction, and that things are never good enough. The same dissatisfaction that often has us yearning for the "good ol’ days" is also the American quality that propels us forward, hungry for a better life, and unwilling to settle.
As Donald Trump faces Hillary Clinton in what has been one of the most vitriolic and unpredictable races in recent US election history, we were joined by America’s leading political satirist PJ O’Rourke, just a month ahead of US election day, as he cast his merciless eye over both candidates. He is known for taking no prisoners on either side of the political divide. He has already called Trump ‘a flying monkey’ and Clinton ‘Jimmy Carter in a pantsuit’. As author of such bestsellers as 'Don’t Vote: It Only Encourages the Bastards', and with more citations in 'The Penguin Dictionary of Humorous Quotations' than any other living writer, O’Rourke has been lambasting American politics for some 40 years. Such is his stature that even President Nixon conceded: ‘Whether you agree with him or not, PJ writes a helluva piece.’ O’Rourke will delved into why, in his own words, ‘America is experiencing the most severe outbreak of mass psychosis since the Salem witch trials of 1692’. As a sign of how the race for the... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week I've got something important to say to every message board across the internet: "Everyone wants to save the world, but no one wants to help mom with the dishes." Sound familiar? That's PJ O'Rourke, world-renowned talking head and published author, whose political humor and commentary make him the butt of many an insult on message boards everywhere. He's on the show today to talk about politics and why humor is always the best policy, especially if you want to really make a difference. When it comes to being funny in politics, humor is your only option. "You really don't have a choice," PJ tells me. "To take it seriously is to indicate you're an idiot." And the same applies to the way you run your business, so be careful! If you take yourself too seriously, you're only going to end up missing out on the important, finer details. Because even in business you are still involved in politics one way or the other. Maybe you're the member of a committee, maybe you design your staff meetings as a form of democracy – either way, there is an election process, a conversation, and a show of hands that can represent your decision or point of view. And you need to be educated in your field if you ever hope to find the humor in it. Because finding the humor in your point of view means you are much more likely to start the right kind of conversations to get people on your side. Unlike politics though, comedy is hard. "I have more respect for comedians like Jay Leno and Chris Rock," PJ says, after I asked him if he respected them more than Joe Biden. And that's saying something. Humor gives you the power to generate conversations, and PJ's quirky sense of humor lends this week's show some hilarious viewpoints on these conversation starters: • The government's role in regulating capitalism and big businesses • The time and place for politics • How to find humor in high-stakes political situations • How comedy can change the way the world sees a situation, especially through the lens of the internet PJ's latest book, Thrown Under the Omnibus, comes out October 6 "Is that when it's coming out? No one told me!" says P.J. The book touches on these themes, but his conversation with me on the show today is full of the kind of jokes you want to be able to tell at your next networking event. So listen in and see how you can be the funny man (or woman) at your next business meeting. To find out more about PJ and hear more of his work, head over to his column at The Weekly Standard. Special Note: Both PJ and James will be presenting LIVE at next month's Stansberry Conference in Las Vegas. This week on Point of Inquiry, Josh Zepps welcomes P.J. O’Rourke, humorist, cultural commentator, and best selling author of sixteen books. An early proponent of “gonzo journalism” and is a self-described libertarian, O’Rourke has served as editor-in-chief of National Lampoon, and has spent 20 years reporting for Rolling Stone and The Atlantic as the world’s only “trouble spot humorist,” going to wars, riots, rebellions, and other “Holidays in Hell” in more than 40 countries. O'Rourke is the H. L. They are, however, able to steer clear of the dicey topic of free will.
The government shutdown is a dramatic display of the growing strife not only between the Republican and Democratic parties, but also, among the GOP itself. For some, the shut down has even called into question the effectiveness of the American political system, which makes a debate we held back in 2011 all the more relevant today. The motion was “The Two-Party System is Making America Ungovernable”. The team arguing for the motion included Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post, and NYTimes Op-Ed Columnist David Brooks. The team arguing against the motion, and in support of the two-party system, included political satirist PJ O’Rourke and author and columnist Zev Chafets. Learn more about your ad choices. Owen Bennett-Jones has spent most of his BBC career reporting on armed conflict around the world. On March 2003 he was in Kuwait as the US forces began their invasion of Iraq. While talking to the American writer PJ O'Rourke, Owen said how frightened the soldiers heading into Iraq must be, but O'Rourke replied: "Well, they are off to do the most exciting thing ever known to man: going to war". It was a striking remark. Was he glorifying war? Or just telling a truth? Since humans first started to communicate, they have been telling - and listening to - war stories. And, alongside the empathy and fellow feeling for victims, the accounts of bravery, suffering and cheating death are compelling and perhaps vicariously thrilling. Jake Wood knows the real story of war. As a member of the Territorial Army, Jake completed 3 tours of Iraq and Afghanistan over a five-year period. In the second of two programmes for 'One To One' about the reality of war, Owen asks him about his final tour in Southern Afghanistan and about one day in particular: the 11 August 2007. Jake was at Forward Operating Base Inkerman - a camp with mud walls in the Sangin Valley - when the Taliban attacked. Presenter: Owen Bennett-Jones. Producer : Perminder Khatkar.
