In their first video podcast (available on their YouTube channel @QueerCinemaCatchup), Joe and Allison break down the commercial-flop-turned-cult-classic Connie and Carla written by Nia Vardalos of My Big Fat Greek Wedding fame (who stars in the film alongside the Oscar-nominated Toni Colette). Hear all about Allison and Joe's relationship (or lack thereof) to drag (5:09); Vardalos's long and surprising career (11:59); how sexism may have played a role in Allison's preconceptions about said career (26:58); the exploration of homophobia in this progressive-for-the-time film (36:30); the disappointing critical response to the film that persists to this day (42:33); and how a TikTok clip of Harvey Fierstein speaking with Barbara Walters made Joe and Allison feel inspired and grateful for artists like Nia who are brave enough to create stories that push the culture forward (1:00). https://www.tiktok.com/@_dofd/video/7393327709595766059 Hosted on Acast. When ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding' opened in 2002, it made its star and writer, Nia Vardalos, a celebrity overnight. “I'm somebody ordinary that something extraordinary happened to,” she told Newsweek's H. Alan Scott. Now, after the 2016 sequel, Vardalos is bringing the Portokalos family back with ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3' (September 8). Part of what has kept us coming back to the family is that “we are real people who could be your family. And I think our kookiness and our flawed, not perfect-ness is reflected in our audience's hearts.” And now, with Vardalos taking on the role of star, director, writer and producer, she's decided the family must go to Greece, which was made possible through Greek tax credits and Faliro House Productions, who made it “their determination to get me what I wanted, which was all of Greece shoved into one movie.” And all of that happened because of Vardalos' commitment to and love of her heritage. “Those were the pluses of having Greek heritage, being fluent in Greek making movies about Greece, we were given a lot of goodwill.” Visit Newsweek.com to learn more about the podcasts we offer and to catch up on the latest news. Wendi and Dfernando's seventeenth episode and their guest interview is Academy Award nominated & multi-award winning actress, screenwriter, playwright and producer Nia Vardalos.  Born and raised in Canada, Nia Vardalos is an alumna of the Chicago-based Second City comedy repertory company.  She gained global attention with her 2002 film adaptation of MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, which she had written and starred in as a one-woman play in Los Angeles.  Based on her personal experiences and family, the film was a critical success and remains the highest-grossing romantic comedy film of all time. Vardalos went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Writing (Original Screenplay), a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.  The film inspired the CBS series MY BIG FAT GREEK LIFE and led to a 2016 sequel MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2, which she also wrote and starred in and featured the original film’s cast. Vardalos’ other notable films: CONNIE AND CARLA, which she also wrote and starred in, opposite Toni Collette and David Duchovny; made her directorial debut with the film I HATE VALENTINE’S DAY; MY LIFE IN RUINS with Richard Dreyfuss (the first American production given permission to film at the Acropolis); and co-wrote with Academy Award winner Tom Hanks the film LARRY CROWNE. She continues to write screenplays, but regularly returns to television.  Her first appearances as an actress were on numerous hit television series like THE DREW CAREY SHOW, CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, BOY MEETS WORLD and TWO GUYS, A GIRL AND A PIZZA PLACE.  Other notable television appearances have been on DROP DEAD DIVA, COUGAR TOWN, GREY’S ANATOMY, LAW & ORDER: SVU, JANE THE VIRGIN, THE CATCH, GRAVES, CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND and most recently the TV movies SAME TIME, NEXT CHRISTMAS, POISONED LOVE: THE STACEY CASTOR STORY and CHRISTMAS ROMANCE AL DENTE.  From 2015 to 2017, Vardalos and Ian Gomez co-presented the first two seasons of ABC TV’s THE GREAT AMERICAN BAKING SHOW.   She made her Broadway debut in THE 24 HOUR PLAYS 2006 as Mary in Julia Cho’s THE FIRST TREE IN ANTARCTICA, directed by Andrew McCarthy, followed by the 2009 The Actors Fund's CHANCE & CHEMISTRY, a centennial celebration of Frank Loesser. A chance meeting with Tony Award & Emmy Award winning director Thomas Kail (HAMILTON, IN THE HEIGHTS, FX’s FOSSE/VERDON) led to her adapting for the NY stage Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 book TINY BEAUTY THINGS, where she originated the role of Sugar.  The play had 2 acclaimed runs at The Public Theater in 2016 and 2017 and had a limited run at the Pasadena Playhouse in 2019.  On May 6, 2020 Vardalos and the entire original cast of the play did a live-stream reading of the play as a benefit for The Actors Fund.   After thirteen distinct in vitro fertilization attempts had failed, Vardalos’ struggle to become a mother ultimately led her and then husband Ian Gomez to adopt.  She went on to tell her journey in her New York Times best-selling book INSTANT MOM, which was published in 2014.Also on Episode 17, Wendi brings up cryotherapy, hot flashes, and the weekly RIPE & ROTTEN REPORT mentions Comedy Central's Emmy Award winning series DRUNK HISTORY, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Broadway's HAMILTON and Wim Hof's deep breathing method. Follow us on our Instagram: Wendi McLendon-CoveyDfernando ZarembaGENERATION RIPE... and our guest Nia Vardalos and her TwitterRemember to subscribe to GENERATION RIPEVisit Dfernando Zaremba's website: dfernandozaremba.com

When Nia Vardalos, the Academy Award nominated actress, began her career she was faced with the reality that not many in Hollywood were interested in hiring a Greek actress. In response to her early struggles Nia became proactive; her semi-autobiographical first screenplay "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" soon followed. Initially unable to get her movie made, Nia then decided to adapt her screenplay into a one-woman show for the theater. (She was inspired to do this after seeing Julia Sweeney perform her one-woman show "God Said Ha!") To help build an audience Nia handed out fliers at her church. The Greek community in Los Angeles soon embraced the show en masse. Fellow Greek-American actress Rita Wilson and her husband Tom Hanks came to the play and the rest is indie film history. How Nia navigated that experience -- and how years later she went through the experience of adopting her daughter (a journey that she writes about in her best selling book "Instant Mom") is incredibly inspiring. Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee Nia Vardalos was born and raised in Winnipeg, Canada, and is classically trained. After graduating from Toronto's Ryerson Theater School, she performed in Shakespeare and many musicals, later taking a job in the box office of The Second City so she could watch the shows for free. One fateful night, the lead actress fell ill and Vardalos convinced producers that she had memorized the show and to let her fill in. The next day she was hired, going on to write/perform in twelve Second City revues and winning Chicago's Jeff Award for Best Actress. After a few years living in Los Angeles, unable to get a film job, she wrote, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. It continues to hold the title of #1 Romantic Comedy of all time. She received an Academy Award nom for best Screenplay, Golden Globe nom for Best Actress, and won the Independent Spirit Award and People’s Choice award. She is the screenwriter/actor/producer of "Connie and Carla", “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2”, lead actor in "My Life in Ruins", and "For a Good Time Call", with Tom Hanks is the co-writer of "Larry Crowne", plus is the actor/writer/director of "I Hate Valentine's Day." Vardalos is the author of INSTANT MOM, a New York Times bestseller, the true story of adopting her daughter as a toddler from American Foster Care. Social workers confirm that, to date, the information from her book has placed over 1300 children in permanent homes. Vardalos also donates all proceeds to adoption charities. Some of her television credits include co-hosting ABC’s “The Great American Baking Show”, and guesting on, “Dr. Ken”, “The Catch”, “Graves”, “Law & Order: SVU”, "Grey's Anatomy", "Curb Your Enthusiasm”, “Jane The Virgin”, hosting "Saturday Night Live”, and voicing Angie Diaz in Disney’s animated series "Star Vs. the Forces of Evil." Besides her years with The Second City, stage credits include “Jennie” in Theate20’s COMPANY directed by Gary Griffin. (winner Best Actress Broadway Theater Award). Directed by Thomas Kail (HAMILTON), and performed for two consecutive seasons at THE PUBLIC, Vardalos plays SUGAR in TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS, her adaptation based on the bestselling book by Cheryl Strayed. Vardalos wrote the play over the course of three years. Nia Vardalos currently volunteers with adoption charities, including matching prospective parents with children living in foster care. She volunteers at her twelve year old daughter’s school, mentors five writers per year, and currently lives in Los Angeles. Vardalos calls herself a Fearless Idiot because she believes it’s best to leap without asking questions.

Opa! The 2002 Nia Vardalos one-woman-show-turned-movie, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” seems like it should have been a Lifetime channel original. However, it somehow became the highest grossing romantic comedy film of all time, and it still retains that distinction by a significant margin over 15 years later. Watching the film did feel like being at a wedding, but that’s only because it was super cheesy, it felt like you were forced to be there and it would have been a lot easier to get through if you were really drunk.  Nia Vardalos plays Toula Portokalos, a 30-year-old virgin who spent her life contemptuously doing everything her overprotective xenophobic parents expected of her, and she was somehow astonished that this strategy didn’t result in happiness. After attending college for about a week, Toula transforms herself from a shy, inarticulate weirdo into an alluring and confident businesswoman. John Corbett plays Ian Miller, a manic pixie dream guy with absolutely no dimension to his character other than being a school teacher and a vegetarian, but we're supposed to overlook his lack of depth because he constantly has a cute smile plastered on his face. Join us as we discuss how Greek children don’t have a monopoly on being utterly embarrassed by their families, Keating’s dad’s home-brewed Windex recipes and how funny Alzheimer’s disease can be. Liz reports on going to see Sisters starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at one of those fancy dine-in theaters.  It reminded her a little too much of being on an airplane (recliner. tray, movie - you know the drill) but otherwise a good time was had by all.  Most of all she enjoyed the trailers before the movie, tipping her off to new funny movies by and about women for release in 2016.   Coming right up, How To Be Single with Dakota Johnson, Alison Brie, Leslie Mann and Rebel Wilson. Next, you can look forward to My Big Fat Creek Greek Wedding 2.  You go, Nia Vardalos Finally, are you looking forward to The Boss? Another hilarious-looking turn by Melissa McCarthy about the wealthiest woman in the world who gets sent to prison for insider trading.  When she gets out, she's got plenty to prove. "Nuff said. Monica had a series of unfortunate events that were car-related, weather-related and include words that are always funny together:  "locked out" and "in pajamas." Liz has a "Ship of Fools" installment.  Yes, people, it can get worse in her building. You have to the find comedy in sewage backups. Lian recommends steering clear of the play "Bridges of Madison Country". Lainie Kazan, who many loved from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," guests stints on "The Nanny," and now on "Desperate Housewives," makes an appearance on BuzzWorthy Radio! Lainie made her Broadway debut in The Happiest Girl in the World in 1961 followed by Bravo Giovanni (1962). She served as understudy to Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl, finally getting to go on 18 months into the run when the star was felled by a serious throat problem. Coincidentally, both had attended the same high school, Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, New York. Kazan's mother alerted the press and, encouraged by rave reviews for her performance, she quit the show and set out to establish herself in a singing career. As her popularity increased, Kazan posed nude for a spread in the October 1970 issue of Playboy, which was reused in Pocket Playboy #4, issued in 1974. Her appearance in the magazine opened the door for her to headline and operate two different Playboy Jazz Clubs, both under Hugh Hefner's overview, which she called Lainie's Lounge East and West on opposite coasts, one in Los Angeles and the other in Manhattan. Her Playboy photographs also inspired the look of Jack Kirby's DC Comics superheroine Big Barda. Kazan appeared in numerous supper clubs across the country, and she guested on Dean Martin's variety series 26 times. Other television work includes a recurring role as Aunt Freida on the Fran Drescher sitcom The Nanny and as Kirstie Alley's mother on Veronica's Closet, and guest shots on St. Elsewhere (resulting in an Emmy nomination), The Paper Chase, Touched by an Angel, and Will & Grace. She was also featured in My Big Fat Greek Life, a short-lived series based on the Nia Vardalos hit film My Big Fat Greek Wedding, in which she had also starred alongside Vardalos. She appeared in a scene as the mother of Adam Sandler's character in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, but it was deleted in the feature film. It is, however, included in the special features on disc.
