Bassist Tom Mendel has had a long and storied career as a bass player. He has been ‘based' (pardon the pun) in Chicago for decades. He's played in the pit for long running shows like ‘Lion King', ‘Wicked', ‘Hamilton', ‘Moulin Rouge', ‘Billy Elliott', ‘Kinky Boots', and many more. But his music has taken him all over the country. He has toured with the likes of Lainie Kazan. He's played club dates with Christine Ebersole, Mandy Gonzalez, Hollis Resnik, to mention just a few. Tom has also recorded extensively, playing hundreds of jingles in Chicago's recording houses. He's also played numerous sessions from Los Angeles to New Orleans to New York. Tom has also been an advocate for union musicians for decades. Much of that work was for those who make their livings playing in the theatre musicians. In fact, he was an early member of the Theatre Musicians Association. He served 7 years as the president of the Chicago chapter, before spending 5 years as the national president of TMA. Tom has also worked on many union committees, negotiating contracts for higher wages and better working conditions with Chicago theatres, as well as for touring musicians. And that's just the tip of the iceberg as far as his work on behalf of performing professionals. But Tom is more than ‘just' a musician. He's also a Master Scuba instructor, a yoga enthusiast, and is not only a proud father, but has recently joined the ranks of his favorite new title: grandpa! Basis for bassist I first met Tom in 1987 when I joined the cast of Chicago's longest running musical up until that time, ‘Pump Boys & Dinettes'. We performed that show together for nearly three years at Chicago's Apollo Theatre. We've been good friends ever since. We know each other's family and have shared the best and worst of those times. Professionally, we've had the good fortune to work together many times over the years. And because the world of pit musicians is not that big, we have a lot of friends and colleagues in common. ‘Bassist Tom Mendel' is just the jumping off point for this conversation. Come check out this friendly chat between two good friends. I think you'll enjoy getting to know this admirable and accomplished man. We're celebrating Labor Day this week by republishing a classic episode from last year all about the television event that became synonymous with not only this holiday, but also its enigmatic (and problematic) host - Mr. Jerry Lewis. Enjoy!---It's that time of year again - Labor Day Weekend. And we all know the two most important things about that day: it's the final chance to wear white clothing (thank you, Elle Woods), and it's also when the nation used to tune into the Muscular Dystrophy Association's annual fundraising broadcast, or as it's better known, the Jerry Lewis Telethon.Rob teaches Ray about Good Jerry and Bad Jerry; the early days of Martin and Lewis, their subsequent break-up, and their unexpected reunion; how Lainie Kazan earned her Actor's Studio stripes while singing Barry Manilow; Joan Crawford's questionable poetry choices; and why MDA eventually disassociated itself from the very man who popularized its fundraiser and championed its cause. If you like what we're doing, please support us on Patreon, or you can subscribe to our bonus content on Apple Podcasts. It has musical numbers, butt tattoos, Cesar Romero, death via oral sex and so much more. Check it out, jerks! America just celebrated Labor Day, and we all know the two things that day has historically signified: it's the last chance to wear white shoes (thank you, Elle Woods), and, until 2014, it was also the only chance to tune in to the Muscular Dystrophy Association's annual fundraiser - better known to most people as the Jerry Lewis Telethon. She continued music education in elementary school learning the piano and clarinet and continued until she graduated from South Shore High School. At fifteen, she got her start in theater with roles in West Side Story and the Three Penny Opera at the Young Men's Jewish Community Center where she was encouraged by the director to audition for HAIR, The Musical: the American tribal love-rock musical by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt McDermott's, which was opening a Chicago company. She was performing eight shows a week. While it was hard work for young Charlo, but being the center of attention was second nature to the burgeoning star. She continued with the Chicago Company, traveled to Las Vegas, and ultimately went on the Tony Award-winning production's first national tour. After moving to New York City, she joined the original Broadway cast of Jesus Christ Superstar, rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice which later won a Tony Award. The funny and talented Renèe Taylor along with her director and son Gabe Bologna will join me in The Locher Room to discuss their new film Tango Shalom. Renèe co-stars, as does her late husband and Gabe's father, Joe Bologna, in Tango Shalom - a delightful movie that offers a message of inclusion and tolerance that is resonating with diverse audiences - all religions, ages and within the LGBTQ community.Renèe is known to television audiences around the world for playing Fran Fine's mother Sylvia on the still popular television sitcom The Nanny for all six seasons. Gabe is an actor / director who studied as the protégée of director John Frankenheimer. Tango Shalom also stars Lainie Kazan, Karina Smirnoff (Dancing with the Star), The Laniado Brothers Jose and Claudio, and Judi Beecher. Joe Bologna co-wrote the film and it was his last performance before he passed away. He and Taylor had a famously successful Hollywood, interfaith marriage themselves. The film is available now on all major VOD/streaming and cable platforms, and DVD, across the US and Canada. Check your local cable provider and visit www.tangoshalommovie.com for the most up to date information.TANGO SHALOMTango Shalom is an interfaith comedy dance movie about “Rabbi Moshe Yehuda” (Jos Laniado), who enters a televised Tango competition to save his Hebrew school from bankruptcy. There is only one problem: because of his religious tenets, he can't touch a woman! He seeks the help of a few advisors, a Catholic priest, a Muslim Imam, and an Indian Mystic, to hash out a plan to help Moshe enter the competition without sacrificing his sacred beliefs. A heart-pumping and heartwarming fable that tests the bonds of family, community, and the bounds of tolerance and faith… one dazzling dance step at a time.Original Airdate: 11/4/2021

Leah and Lee learn of the dangers of mixing greed and horniness in the old west, as they talk about Paul Bartel's "Lust in the Dust" (1985). Lots of talk about Divine and where they were in their career at this point, and their overall influence; the interesting cast and their dedication to this material; the musical numbers; stunt nudity; dangerous oral sex; and a very explicit lap dance on Henry Silva's corpse, among other topics. Also, and extend bit on what the hosts were watching, as Leah has some thoughts about a movie she recently watched; and also she was having some mechanical problems with her alcoholic beverages during the recording. Dean Martin epitomized cool. A founding member of the Rat Pack, Dean was a multi-talented performer who was part of the number one comedy act in America, a chart-topping singer for over half a century and one of the biggest stars in Hollywood and on TV. After a disastrous botched recording yesterday, MMIS is back with The Journey of Natty Gann, a surprisingly violent Disney live action romp that is not about an intrepid girl reporter! Ali turns in an admirable performance, given that she was furious to have to do this twice. Jon refuses to sing Spider-Wolf again. The Journey of Natty Gann was directed by Jeremy Kagan, and stars Meredith Salenger, John Cusack, Ray Wise, Lainie Kazan, Scatman Crothers, and Jed the Wolf-Dog. Screenplay by Clifford Odets and Jack London.* *(This might be a lie)
