With special guest: Jeff Apter… in conversation with Bill Kable George Young made his name internationally by writing with his best mate Harry Vanda a song we can all sing along to more than 50 years after its release. So it was a natural choice as the title of Jeff Apter’s book Friday on My Mind: the life of George Young. George managed to get a ticket to The Beatles Sydney performance in 1964. He decided right then that he was going to be in music as a career but it was not going to be a straightforward ride as we learn in Jeff’s book. We hear from our special guest today about the toughness of all the large Young clan. Eight of them arrived in Australia as Ten Pound Poms. They needed that toughness firstly as they grew up in a dreary part of Scotland. Then when they abandoned their life in Scotland they needed to be tough once again when they arrived in the Villawood Migrant Hostel in Sydney. Villawood was not the land of milk and honey they had seen on the posters. It was after a fight in the hostel that George met Harry strumming a guitar and the nucleus of The Easybeats formed. *Content Warning: This episode of Doin' Time contains audio images and discussion of Aboriginal and Torres-Strait Islander people who have died This week, Marisa presents part one of a yearly commemoration of the Myall Creek Massacre, interviewing Cecilia Blackwell, non-Aboriginal co-chair of the Friends of Myall Creek National Committee alongside Keith Munro, who will be joining the program next Monday 30th May.  Each year, people around the country gather on the June long weekend to commemorate the unprovoked massacre of at least 28 Wirrayaraay women, children and older men by a group of stockmen on Myall Creek Station on June 10, 1838. The Myall Creek Memorial, constructed near Bingara was constructed on 10 June 2000 by a group of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people working together in an act of reconciliation. In 2008 the massacre site and memorial were included on the national heritage register and also received NSW state heritage listing in 2010.  Cecilia discusses the brutal story of the Myall Creek Massacre and its aftermath, the history of commemorations and memorials, and the importance of representative descendants of both perpetrators and survivors acting in yearly reconciliation events, with an emphasis on truthfully remembering the past, reaching out to community and building a shared vision of the future. To find out more about the fundraiser and memorial events in Myall Creek on the 11th & 12th June 2022, or to become a member of Friends of Myall Creek, you can go to their website www.myallcreek.org  Later in the program, Marisa speaks with Ian Rintoul from the Refugee Action Coalition about a tragic further suicide at Villawood Detention Centre, where a New Zealand woman in her early 30s took her own life 22nd May 2022, following at least two other suicides this year (and a large number of attempted suicides) in Villawood and other detention centres. He discusses this epidemic of self-harm and suicides within the detention regime in so-called Australia and the familiar story of distress and abuse of the hands of Serco guards, calling for an inquiry into the lack of oversight, timelines, and procedures involved in immigration detention. Also discussed are the large number of people from New Zealand in immigration detention and other temporary visa holders who do not necessarily fall under the umbrella of refugees or asylum seekers, but are commonly deported or detained under existing regulations of section 501 (and how many are unaware of the visa cancellation laws that put 80% of people in immigration detention through visa cancellations), and the struggle ahead in securing rights for all people in this system under the new Labor government, including those on bridging or expired visas and those already in detention, here and offshore.  Lastly, Marisa speaks with Brett Collins from Justice Action about a recent partial win in the SA supreme court, allowing the distribution of the JUST US newspaper to prisoners in the state. JUST US, running since 2004, is the only newspaper for people in detention that allow prisoners to read a statement from state and federal political parties in regards to prison issues ahead of elections. Since this win, one newspaper will be made available per prisoner in detention nationwide.  This is not a complete win, however, with many redactions including an advertisements for the Justice Reform Initiative for the words "justice is failing" and also "Jailbreak Prison Radio", and perhaps most alarmingly, contacts for NGO supports available to prisoners. The struggle continues. If you would like a copy of the JustUs newspaper, you can send a request to Justice Action at PO Box 386 Broadway NSW 2007. To donate to Doin' Time for 3CR's annual Radiothon fundraiser, you can make a tax-deductible donation on 3cr.org.au/donate, or call (03) 9419 8377 during business hours.  Our target this year is $850 - Keep Community Strong and please donate if you can!

Today I have a novel of Sydney that has become a favourite already of my reading this year.Kavita Bedford is an Australian-Indian author and freelance journalist. Her writing has appeared in Guernica, The Guardian and Griffith Review. But it is Kavita’s debut novel Friends & Dark Shapes that I want to talk about today. In Friends & Dark Shapes four friends move into a share-house in Redfern. Over the course of four seasons the group must navigate communal living as both a necessity of their late twenties existence and a reality of the increasing inaccessibility of the gentrifying city. From toilet rolls and the dishwashing roster, share-house living is opened up and the reader is invited to navigate space in a city that is always shifting and seemingly forever out of reach. The narrative of Friends & Dark Shapes is comprised of vignettes taking us around Sydney and into small moments of life. The narrator welcomes the reader into her world and juxtaposes people and places with their parallels in her past.Negotiating between the contemporary and a kind of nostalgia is a necessary battle as it is in these past moments that the narrator vividly recollects her father. Their bond and the ways they traversed the city through exploration and ritual make the seeming patchwork of streets and suburbs a comfortable terrain. As we move around Sydney, in space and in time, we are confronted with the ways people live their lives, often siloed from neighbours in nearby suburbs. Within the share-house there is a sense of permanent impermanence. The group knows this is not their forever home but cannot perhaps conceive of what such a place might look like. The uncertainty of place and belonging is explored the various communities we visit. While working on a story the narrator takes us to Villawood and the home of migrants who have settled in a house overlooking the temporary home they occupied when they first arrived. The detention centre is now a space shut off and barricaded to serve as a deterrent. In some ways it seems that the novel is posing a question of who can belong. Whether through barbed wire fences or sky rocketing house prices home and belonging are strictly controlled and for many Sydney is a liminal space.Ultimately though Friends & Dark Shapes is a gorgeous meditation on movement. The novel had me reflecting on the ways I move through life, through relationships and yes through this city.As I record this just outside of Sydney in the Blue Mountains, I find Friends & Dark Shapes takes me back to the streets and the people that I have loved. When I spoke with Kavita for Final Draft she compared our conversation to a virtual walk through Sydney. I think that’s a good metaphor for the experience of reading Friends & Dark ShapesThis is a soulful novel that I would highly recommend

They married in war torn Warsaw, Poland circa 1956 after Marcus (a shoemaker who ran his own shop) hired Kazimiera as his assistant on the same day she’d walked in to purchase a pair of red shoes.Five year old Johnny (Janusz in Polish) arrived in Australia as a refugee with his parents first staying at a detention centre in Bonegilla, Victoria then transferred to Villawood,NSW.Settling in Campsie, JB’s parents worked hard, eventually purchasing property and setting up a secure position in the community. Kazimiera involved herself in local church activities such as teaching scripture and singing in the choir as well as nursing while Marcus ran his handcrafted shoe business from Circular Quay and became a well-known identity some would refer to as a ‘philosopher’ at the Campsie Hotel. Johnny refers to his dearly departed mother and father as ‘an angel’ and ‘a cutthroat but true gentleman’ respectively. And boy did they know how to dance…Johnny followed in his parents' footsteps regarding work ethic, busying himself from the age of 7 with jobs such as paper and milk runs, delivering pharmaceuticals for a chemist and sweeping the local cinema and ice rink. While attending gigs in his teens JB met a band promoter who took him on as a roadie where he toured with the likes of AC/DC, Sherbert, Hush, Rose Tattoo, The Southern Star Band, The Who, Black Feather, Status Quo and Pink Floyd just to name a few.Boxer (his better known stage name only slightly changed from its original) also worked as a bouncer at the State Theatre and various clubs/strip joints throughout Sydney’s notorious Kings Cross. From there, of course, he became the worlds most feared pizza chef, Bobo, in the hit TV series Fat Pizza. This was just the beginning of what JB refers to as his magic carpet ride through life.Weighing in now at 61 years he sure has a story or two to tell.Wanna know more? Intercepted? The people smugglers boats are not intercepted. They are welcomed. With open arms. According to the Encarta dictionary, to intercept is “to prevent people or objects from reaching their destination or target by stopping, diverting, or seizing them.” Encarta gives this example “The contraband was intercepted by police at the dock.” The Gillard government doesn’t intercept smugglers’ boats. The smugglers clients are welcomed, given government homes and put on welfare. So far 1278 clients have been welcomed this month, 6535 this year. Ms. Gillard and her ministers have welcomed 91 boats this year. The government’s spin doctors won’t tell us, but 2GB’s Ray Hadley revealed on 24 July that once again, smugglers’ clients at the Villawood detention centre have jammed blankets into smoke alarms and set their more than ample taxpayer funded accommodation on fire. Meanwhile, moving smugglers’ clients from the crowded facility on Christmas Island to the mainland is costing up to $180,000 a flight, according to Gemma Jones in The Daily Telegraph (24/7)
