For this week's main podcast review, Ema Sasic, Katie Johnson, and Tom O'Brien join me to discuss the latest film from Scott Cooper, "Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere," starring Jeremy Allen White, Jeremy Strong, Paul Walter Hauser, Stephen Graham, Odessa Young, Gaby Hoffmann, Marc Maron & David Krumholtz. Written and directed by Scott Cooper and based on the 2023 book "Deliver Me from Nowhere" by Warren Zanes, as well as some elements from Bruce Springsteen's autobiography "Born to Run," it chronicles Springsteen's personal and professional struggles during the conception of his 1982 album "Nebraska." The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its performances, emotional honesty, and character-driven story of confronting depression and turning pain into art. What did we think of it? Please tune in as we discuss the performances, writing, direction, tone, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! If you were tasked with making a feature film about Bruce Springsteen, you could throw a dart and hit any number of career peaks worth covering. Instead, director/writer Scott Cooper chose to zoom in on the Boss' personal low, chronicled by author Warren Zanes in his acclaimed 2023 book Deliver Me From Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska. With unbounded access to his subject, Warren's meticulous and potetic account of what he calls "the ultimate underdog of all recordings" is now the basis for 'Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,' coming to theaters everywhere this Friday, October 24th.   Also an executive producer on the film, Warren walks us through the journey from book to script to cineplex, as well as the film's granular attention to the smallest of details, and an emotional, full-circle moment he experienced after the film's first public screening. Plus, the brilliant casting choices of Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong, as Springsteen and his longtime manager Jon Landau.   Deliver Me From Nowhere is available, with an updated, movie tie-in cover, wherever you get literature. Follow @warrenzanes on Instagram, and find his 2024 PBS special, Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska: A Celebration in Words and Music (featuring Noah Kahan, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, The Lumineers and more), at pbs.org.   Music throughout today's episode is from Joelton Mayfield's new LP, Crowdpleaser, also out this Friday, October 24th on Bloodshot Records. Visit joeltonmayfield.com for tour dates, social media, pre-order info and more.      NOTE: Further context on Warren Zanes' book Deliver Me From Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska is available from his previous interview on Episode 187 of Vinyl Emergency.

This is top tier songwriting for me. When you have a platform and you can take a risk by punching up at people who have power, I think it's good to do it now and again. If you can take that polemic and wrap it in a powerful, simple, stomping track like Joe, then I'm all in. There's a theatrical element to the song that you could easily imagine fitting a full broadway production. You could see the lights strobe out on those relentless kicks, while Joe, with crooked yellowing teeth and a Fagin-esque grotesqueness, is lit from beneath in red as he slobbers and snarls his way through his commercial wet dream. Joe isn't just a great track, it's one of the songs that glues this entire album together. With no villains, there can be no heroes - and we will get a hero late in the piece - so Joe is the essential leviathan lurking in the shadows of the story.Check out the song here : https://youtu.be/KBqPLw_6XD8Don't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcast Network : https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.appThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Tom is hugely proud of this song. In Conversations with Tom Petty, he tells author Paul Zollo, “Dreamville” is one of the best songs I ever wrote. That was about innocence.” And it's this innocence that contrasts so starkly and so effectively with the corporate interference in The Last DJ, or the commodification of Johnny's art in Money Becomes King. Without this contrast the more belligerent songs the album could easily take on a petulant tone but in Dreamville, Tom gives us that fleeting Utopian vision to measure cultural decline against. It gives us a baseline and a starting point in one melodic flashback scene, before we're dragged back forward in time to devastating effect in track four. This disconnect between the artist and the audience is one of the subjects that Tom uses to explore the theme of greed that was the overarching construct behind the album. So this leads me to another quote from Tom in that 2002 interview that really does just get down to the nub of the matter. He asks; “How much money do you need?” And yes, I know that Tom was a multi-millionaire, but that was off the back of his creative work and performing for people. The specificity of the song got Tom into a little bit of trouble and the single was banned on a lot of stations who didn't reach for the deeper meaning and saw it as a direct attack on radio itself. In 2010, Tom told Mojo UK, “Radio was just a metaphor. ‘The Last DJ' was really about losing our moral compass, our moral centre. We don't care who gets hurt any more in the quest for the dollar. I didn't want to start the new season in earnest while I was away as I knew I wouldn't have as much time to prep and barely any to record and edit, so I wanted to get a special episode and was trying to think of what to do to ease into the season. These two dates in 2002 completely destroy the conventional wisdom that you don't go to see a "legacy act" to hear music from their new record. Hearing this album played live in this way almost makes it the only way to think about this tour. Imagine if the Heartbreakers had put on similar performances for albums like Long After Dark, Wildflowers, and Hypnotic Eye. Even if you performed them as part of a mini-residency, hearing albums in their entirety in this way gives them a much more cohesive resonance that is lost if you cherry pick two or three singles. You can check out the entire performance here : https://youtu.be/yLl2_JIlKpsDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. 7 Tage 1 Song

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 18, 2025 13:46

“One more night, God I've had to fight. To keep my line of sight on what's real”. That opening line really acts as a double underline on the pain and weariness that Tom has explored lyrically throughout much of his twelfth album. When author Paul Zollo mentions this in Conversations with Tom Petty, asking “Can you keep some perspective, being within the music industry, on the meaning and impact an album can have to some guy who is far outside of the system?”, Tom answers “I hope it's still like that. I hope people still get albums and get inspired by them."NOTE: The audio quality isn't as good as it usually is as I am recording on my laptop due to my main computer, that I usually record and has my good mic etc. died last week and is away in the shop in the queue to be examined.Song : https://youtu.be/riZf4aH0iToDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Today's episode is a fan chat with a musician and podcaster who I've gotten to know a little over the last 12 months or so and wanted to learn more about. Greg Wolfe, or Wolfie as he's more commonly known in the podcast universe, is a bass player and band leader for the Connecticut-based band Accidental Breakdown. He's also one of the co-hosts of the Regarding Series of podcasts which breaks down a much-maligned album each season to see if it has any redeeming qualities. It's a show I've been lucky to guest on a couple of times and I've always enjoyed Wolfie's insights when we've chatted. We talk Lou Reed, Bob Marley, starting a lifetime of music on bass guitar, the value of playing with people who are better than you, and of course, Tom Petty! We talk about Tom being the quintessential American rocker and how Petty resonates with you at different stages in your life. You can find Wolfie on Soundcloud here: https://soundcloud.com/greg-wolfe-927450616And you can tune in to the Regarding Series here: https://go.goodpods.com/KrTXANDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. There's a weight to the arrangement of this song, accentuated by that heavy kick pattern that Steve Ferrone opts for, along with Tom's deliberate persistence in landing on the root note at the end of his phrases that makes this one compelling. It's also noteworthy in not really having a defined chorus. We do have that A section and B section, but I wouldn't necessarily call it a chorus, then you have a very short bridge at the end so you have an ABABAC structure that just adds to the unresolved tension and unease that pervades this little hidden gem of a song.Song : https://youtu.be/x49C_T102iMDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. It's often been remarked that Mike sometimes sounds like Tom when he sings. If you listen to the Dirty Knobs albums you do hear some of those inflections peeking out from time to time, as you'd expect. But this goes both ways and I think Tom actually sounds a lot like Mike on About to Give Out - particularly in the verses. If you heard this on a Dirty Knobs record I don't think you'd immediately catch that it was Tom and not Mike. It's an affirmation that after thinking about this problem, there's a conviction to follow an ideal, if not a known direction yet. Whatever the direction we end up taking, it has to be something that we have certainty of authenticity. We're not going to take a chance on something that feels half-dressed or unfinished, or flimsy in its intent. This course has to be real. I think a lot of us spend an awful lot of our lives being pulled and pushed by bad actors, bad advice, bad politics, bad faith, and bad ideas. So we have to wait for that crack in the cultural assault to see that clear path through the maelstrom that shows itself to us. And we have to be ready for it. We have to grasp it with both hands when it comes.Song : https://youtu.be/RjrUxTBPpf8 Randy Woods Band : https://music.youtube.com/channel/UCf-OsPLOU-bgsrrweS8YswQAbsofunkinlutely : https://music.youtube.com/channel/UC5PzVGhMRRPUt7QXSfGl2sQDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. I think this is a perfectly neat, tidy, compact, fun little bouncy piece of music, with a nicely constructed, easy to remember lyric. The problem is, this one has always felt to me like Tom could crank out something like this on the way to the grocery store in about 5 minutes, on any given day of the week. It's interesting that Mike has never dusted this one off with the Dirty Knobs and I think this goes back to him talking about how difficult a period this was and given the circumstances around its conception you can see why it might be ground he wouldn't want to revisit. The song was a mainstay on the Echo tour however and in "Spotlight on a Heartbreaker" series, which appeared on the official website many years ago and saw fans email questions in for one of the band to answer, Mike was asked “What is your favourite song to perform live and why”, His response? “This tour I liked "I Don't Wanna Fight" 'cause I got to be king!”Song : https://youtu.be/_Lf7eM9qCTcDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. OK, let's get into the song! In Conversations with Tom Petty, Tom tells author Paul Zollo “I wrote that on the drive to the studio in Bugs' truck. My trusty roadie Bugs was driving me to work—and I got this idea for this song, “Billy The Kid.” I pulled out a pad as we were going over Topanga Canyon with all those curves, so I was really writing on the edge of the paper, and back and forth in the truck. And I wrote it all out on the way to work, and I had the tune in my head.” Any songwriter will tell you that it's massively exciting when that thunderbolt of inspiration hits and words or music come at you all at once. In this case, Tom had the words flowing and the tune only in his head, rather than it coming from sitting around noodling on the guitar and then framing in lyrics later. It's especially gratifying to hear for me because that's almost always how I write; a specific line or chorus and then some basic melody.Song : https://youtu.be/WHVywrWjjrQLive from the Fonda - 2013: https://tinyurl.com/26yv2c2fDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. I'd said in the closing to last week's episode that I get a strong connection between this song and the Jeff Lynne era of Tom's work. So, close your eyes, listen to the first four bars, and imagine coming out of Too Good to Be True and into this song. It feels as natural a transition as anything in the catalogue to me. I think it's partially the blend of those two acoustic guitars panned left and right sitting underneath that crunchy electric part from Mike. The tempo, bounce, and feel of this just screams Into the Great Wide Open era to me.Song: https://youtu.be/2_JOAHA2tpkDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. The Tom Petty Project

This is a very grown up song and as we discussed on Wildflowers, it's a song that wouldn't resonate as much with a person in their teens or early twenties as it would with someone who has lived and lost. You need that weight of experience to truly feel the bone-weariness that Tom projects at times and the hesitant accusations he ends with. It's a collage of emotions and narrative dissonance that perfectly fleshes out what a broken relationship feels like even when a new, healthy one is coming into focus.Song: https://youtu.be/OjC1Idf9w_4Live at the Fillmore '99: https://tinyurl.com/2wtkm3jdThis episode is dedicated to the memory of Margaret "Cookie" Donnelly Obituary. In Conversations with Tom Petty, author Paul Zollo tells Tom that he finds the song has “kind of a British, early Beatles sound” to which to Tom replies “Yeah. It's funny how you see these influences go round and round, because I was thinking of Don Everly, that sort of melody. But it does have a mid-Sixties British sound. And he was obviously influencing them.” Paul then observes “Like one of those old songs, it's very short—under three minutes.” and Tom tells him “Yeah. The Tom Petty Project

Lyrically, we get this short story, in typical Tom fashion where he's just giving us the outlines and parts of a narrative. We start out standing by the highway in boots and silver spurs. And we end on the interstate across the Georgia line, which is maybe a teeny nod back to Tweeter and the Monkey Man. In fact, here's an idea, maybe the protagonist of this song is actually Jan! I can imagine her heading south after the fiasco in Jersey, but it sounds like she found trouble again in Nevada and headed back east! It's an incredible lyric to come up with on the spot, as I say and it's obviously gone on to be a lesser known single that is adored by Pettyheads. It's a song that lends itself well to themes of not going down without a fight while at the same time depicting a somewhat desperate character who is going down anyway! Fabulous writing. I love the line “She's a sweet young thing. Brings me dreams in a box she made for me”. That's a very Petty-esque little piece of imagery that he throws in early to add to the very dreamy quality of the piece. In Conversations with Tom Petty, Tom tells author Paul Zollo that “The words changed several times in that song. But I finally got it to where I liked it. I think I worked on that one a lot more than any of the others.” And where we were talking about Free Girl Now sounding much more spontaneous lyrically, this one does have that quality of being a more considered lyric. I don't think many people would come up with “Brings me dreams in a box she made for me” off the cuff.If you want to listen to the track before listening to the episode, you can find it here: https://youtu.be/-IIX0nGyfyAYou can find my appearance on the Booked on Rock podcast here: https://youtu.be/Gkea4Xc_2uQYou can find Megan Volpert's wonderful book, "Why Alanis Morissette Matters" here: https://utpress.utexas.edu/9781477330876/Don't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. The song is a powerful push back against an abusive relationship on behalf of the woman Tom loved. The way the lyrics are organized, with the verses describing the abuse in the past tense and the uplifting chorus being in the present tense really drives home that idea that “No longer will you be a slave. No longer will you have to crawl”. It's a celebration of liberation and freedom that is specific to a personal situation but again has that anthemic universality that would make a stadium full of people who might not know its origins sing along in full-throated support! If you want to listen to the song before you listen to the episode, you can find it here : https://youtu.be/vxfQun7sfokAnd if you want to hear the live version from the Fillmore in '99, you can find that here : https://youtu.be/1p7e5MgqkcI Don't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Sonically, you could definitely hear this one sitting happily on Mojo. But I also sometimes feel that this is the most Wildflowers-sounding of all the songs on Echo. If you found out that it was another of the songs that hadn't been included on that album, it wouldn't really surprise you. In Conversations With Tom Petty, the only thing that Tom tells author Paul Zollo about this song is that “That's great. That should have been a single. Warren Zanes is a “rockstar biographer” in more ways than one: he has experienced life as a rockstar, a biographer, and a biographer of rockstars. When Mack first met Warren in New Orleans sometime in the late 80s or early 90s, Zanes was then emerging from the wreckage of meteoric success. He'd been the teenage guitarist in critically acclaimed band The Del Fuegos, who briefly broke into the national popular consciousness—and then just plain broke up. But in the years since, Zanes remade himself into one of our most erudite and entertaining public scholars of popular music. Among other things, he's been Vice President of Education and Public Programs at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a consulting producer on the Oscar-winning film Twenty Feet from Stardom, a producer on the Grammy-nominated PBS/Soundbreaking series, and he conducted interviews for Martin Scorsese's George Harrison documentary. All while keeping up a solo recording career with collaborators such as the Dust Brothers. Warren's books include the first volume in the celebrated 33 1/3 Series, Dusty in Memphis; Petty: The Biography and Revolutions in Sound: Warner Bros. Records. His latest book is called Deliver Me from Nowhere. On its face, it's a book about the making of Bruce Springsteen's classic lo-fi album Nebraska. But it's also about sound technology, musicianship teetering in a moment between the analog and digital eras, what it means to be in a band, and the relationship between the four-track cassette recorder and social alienation in Reagan era. In this interview, Warren talks about his journey, the recent book, his craft as a writer, and—as part of our mini-theme this season on audiobooks—the process of narrating his own audiobooks and why he does so.  And for our Patrons we'll have Warren's What's Good segment, with something good to read, listen to, and do. I, along with I'm sure many of you Pettyheads, consider this one of Tom's finest works. It's an absolute masterpiece in songwriting, lyrical precision, and arrangement. As Tom tells Paul Zollo, “It was a great example of The Heartbreakers at work. On my own I would have never arrived at that arrangement of the song. But they really took it somewhere that I would have never got to by myself.” The mixture of light and shade the contrast of hope and despondency, of cynicism and vulnerability make this track a powerhouse of pure emotion. It's one of those where every single note is placed to perfection, every musical decision supports the construction and delivery of the song and the sum of its incredible parts gels into this perfect five minutes of music that moves me as much today as it did the first time I listened to it!If you want to listen to the song before you listen to the episode, you can find it here: https://youtu.be/nQFCF9KESicAnd make sure you check out Richard Hearn's brilliant website Paragraph Planet here: https://www.paragraphplanet.comDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Airport is a tight little bundle of keyboard virtuosity from Benmont Tench with a lazy, groove-soaked accompaniment from Howie Epstein and Chris Trujillo in the rhythm section. This piece is hugely interesting in two different, very interesting ways. First of all, I'm pretty sure (given the credits in the album liner notes) that Tom didn't play on it. Second, given that the melodic contributions would almost certainly have come spontaneously from the mind and fingers of Benmont Tench, it's really curious to me that he isn't at least co-credited on this one!If you want to check out the song ahead of the episode, you can find the official video here: https://youtu.be/P5RbW82PVqsIf you want to check out Benmont Tench's fantastic new album, The Melancholy Season, you can find that here : https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kRJEygrs-WJ4ZzS39uwMLTJSUGArR8qDoDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. It's curious that the two songs that reference California were both left off the final Wildflowers release; perhaps Tom being self-conscious about being too prescriptive and direct in that vein. Hung Up and Overdue has a very simple, very direct lyric which sits atop a wonderful arrangement and doesn't need to do too much of the heavy lifting. It's almost like Mike's more reserved guitar part. We do get a little shine and sparkle in a couple of places, but its part of the ensemble rather than taking a starring role.If you want to check out the song ahead of the episode, you can find it here : https://youtu.be/bSl9ykaiNvwDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. I don't think I've ever hidden or tried to hide the fact that Walls is one of my very favourite Tom Petty compositions. I think it's essentially a perfect song. And this version is, as I say, an exercise in showing how to simplify and condense an arrangement to be as tight as you can make it without losing an ounce of its beauty.Long time listeners will know that when I wrote one of my ten questions; which version of Walls do you prefer, I was astounded to find that most people picked Circus. And I've since talked about the fact that I definitely listen to that one way more than I ever did before I started the podcast, but I have to tell you, I think No 3 is still ever so slightly ahead of Circus for me. The harmonica solo and the really raw, stripped down arrangement still carries an emotional weight that the big, bold, multi-layered approach on Circus doesn't achieve. If you want to check out the song ahead of the episode, you can find it here : https://youtu.be/UHksHuZd_gw You can find the Circus version here : https://youtu.be/_aoEIA38kTQThe PBS live is here : https://youtu.be/zJl0pe-DWy8And the Fillmore 97 live version is here : https://youtu.be/gX65I6FnR0sDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. I would love to know if an extended version of this arrangement exists anywhere on the cutting room floor. I know that there was only one violinist, Lili Haydn, who I'm hoping to have on the podcast as it happens, and two cellists, Gerri Stutyak and Michael Severens. But I think if you kept building this into a full orchestral string arrangement with some timpani or other percussion added, it could have been a pretty amazing piece of music in its own right. As it stands, it's an absolutely perfect piece of music for this portion of the movie and shows that had Tom decided he wanted to score more movies, he would have been perfectly capable of doing so.Note: There is some profanity in the movie clip that is included in this episode. If you want to check out the song ahead of the episode, you can find it here:To listen to the song, go here: https://youtu.be/uk5pFlnfDZUDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. There's a quality to this song that I've only really experienced once before. It makes me homesick for a place I've never lived in. The other time this has happened to me was, coincidentally, also California. If any of you are Van Halen fans or even just rock n roll fans with an interest in the Pasadena scene in the 70s, you have to read the superb book Van Halen Rising. Easily the best rock biog I've ever read, written by an exceptional journalist and author and a wildly knowledgeable rock historian, Greg Renoff. Rather than being a gratuitous look at the excess of the hedonistic rock n roll lifestyle, Greg very deliberately builds a picture of Pasadena in the 70s in which the band was born and grew into the world famous act they became. Well, this song, in two minutes and thirty eight seconds leaves me with that strange sense of nostalgia and affection for a place that doesn't shape any part of my life.
