Lukujonossa keskustelemme Go Nagain ronskinraisusta klassikkosarjasta Devilman, joka 1970-luvulla rikkoi mangan rajoja. --- Kommentoi | Mastodon | Twitter (X?) | Instagram --- (01:00) – KUULUMISET: ÄÄNIJÄLKI - Afureko-blogi ja sen Äänijälki-podcast - Afureko Twitterissä - Nita Twitterissä - Mangakartan ja Äänijäljen ystävänpäivätempaus 2022 - Jakso 63, jossa puhuimme ystävänpäivätempauksesta alkukuulumisissa (03:56) – MANGAN VUOSIKYMMENET: ENNEN TEZUKAA - Jean-Marie Bouissoun tietokirja Manga: Histoire et univers de la bande dessinée japonaise - Ukiyo-e-puupiirrosteokset - Hokusai (13:04) – MANGAN VUOSIKYMMENET: 1940-LUKU - Petterin DesuTalks-luento Mies joka loi Osamu Tezukan (YouTube – videotallenne jäi traagisesti isoksi osaksi ilman ääntä, joka alkaa kuulua vasta noin tästä eteenpäin, jos volyymin säätää maksimiin) - Shin Takarajima (1947), Osamu Tezukan läpimurtoteos, joka on sittemmin nostettu modernin mangan alkupisteeksi ja peruskiveksi - Shin Takarajima olikin esillä myös British Museumin manganäyttelyssä vuonna 2019 - Tähän aikaan sarjakuvaa julkaistiin Japanissa lähinnä halpoina (kuva) ja tekijänoikeuksista välittämättöminä (kuva) akahon-julkaisuina, joiden seassa Tezuka erottui edukseen laadullaan - Fujiko Fujio -työpari muistelee jälkikäteen, miten päräyttävältä Shin Takarajiman näkeminen tuntui (kuva) - Floyd Gottfredsson ja hänen piirrostyylinsä, joka on tuttu kaikille vanhoja Aku Ankan taskukirjoja lukeneille - Squash & stretch on animaatioperiaatteista tärkeimpänä pidetty - Comics Journalin artikkelit: - Manga Finds Pirate Gold: The Case of New Treasure Island - Tezuka Osamu Outwits the Phantom Blot: The Case of New Treasure Island Cont'd - Sazae-san (1946–1974) (19:47) – MANGAN VUOSIKYMMENET: 1950-LUKU - Osamu Tezukan nousukausi - Viidakon valtias (1950), maailmalla tutumpi jenkkinimellään - Petterin kirjoitus Viidakon valtiaasta Anime-lehden numerossa 3/2013 (pdf) - Astro Boy (1952) - Princess Knight (1953) - Tokiwa-so, jossa Tezuka asui 1953-1954 ja josta muodostui Tokion mangapiirtäjien keskus - Shotaro Ishinomori - Fujiko Fujio - Weekly Manga Times (1956) – kustantajansa mukaan ensimmäinen pelkkää mangaa julkaissut lehti (22:56) – MANGAN VUOSIKYMMENET: 1960-LUKU - Viikottaiset mangalehdet rytmittävät nuorten elämää: - Weekly Shonen Magazine (1959) - Weekly Shonen Sunday (1959) - Weekly Shonen Jump (1968) - Weekly Shonen Champion (1969) - Akahon-puolella synkempää ja rankempaa sarjakuvaa alettiin vuodesta 1957 alkaen kutsua gekigaksi (“dramaattiset kuvat”) vastareaktiona lehdissä julkaistavan ja lapsille soveltuvan mangan (“sutaistut kuvat“) suosiolle). On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined by tokusatsu enthusiasts, Grant & Patrick, from the Super Senpai Podcast, to discuss Shotaro Ishinomori's original Himitsu Sentai Gorenger manga released by Seven Seas! Not only a comic which ran in Weekly Shonen Sunday back in 1975 that served as the tie-in to the television show of the same name, but was a starting point for what would eventually become another staple iconic tokusatsu franchise just as big, if not bigger, than Kamen Rider! While the comic itself is much more transparently a commercial product tie-in for an existing tv show than Kamen Rider was, that doesn't mean there isn't a lot to love! Join us as we discuss why Gorenger, as well as Super Sentai and tokusatu as a whole, is fun! Enjoy!! You’ve been waiting all summer for it, and now the time has come! That’s right, on this behemoth of an episode we’re giving you guys a full rundown of this year’s Anime Expo - an over four hour-long podcast to discuss over four days of events and activities! Joining me to go over all this goodness is VLordGTZ, co-host of Manga Mavericks @ Movies and editorial writer for All-Comic and Toonami Faithful, and the Shonen Sunday guru himself, Sakaki, webmaster of the Weekly Shonen Sunday talkback blog and twitter. At least, you’ll get to hear Sakaki about half an hour in - there was, unfortunately, a mishap where his audio wasn’t recording for the first hour of our conversation, so we had to trim down some of our earlier discussion points. If he hadn’t lost that first hour, you guys would be listening to a five hour-long podcast instead of a four hour-long one! But don’t you fret - you guys will start hearing Sakaki once we get to the really exciting stuff, from the Dr. Stone premiere onwards! Yes indeed, we cover the gamut of AX premieres and panels in this podcast, from the historic Japanese-language premiere of Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution to Ouran High School Host Club author Bisco Hatori’s first North American con appearance! Plus, we also give you the lowdown on the lines, the food, the convention center, the dealer’s hall and Artist Alley - almost everything and anything there is to know about what our Anime Expo 2019 experience was like! It was a lot of chaos, but did we have fun overall, and would we recommend you attending next year’s show? Listen and learn, as we explore the AX experience! Hey, I technically got this up on Sunday, right? Ah, I suppose it doesn't matter if you're not listening to this episode on the day it was posted anyway. Sorry for the delay, but the rough audio for this episode was over four hours long and I had to edit it instead of Colton. But hopefully because this is such a long - and stuffed - episode it was well worth the wait! That's right, our long awaited Weekly Shonen Sunday episode is finally here! We're joined by returning guest and good friends Bomber D Rufi, who recently started a blog dedicated to recapping each new issue of the oft underappreciated magazine. We cover several of Sunday's current hits and other underlooked gems in the lineup, as well as some of the most notable mangaka working for the imprint! To top it off, we answer two of the most pressing questions when it comes to Shonen Sunday: why is it so unpopular compared to Shonen Jump, and why the hell was Keijo!!!!!!!! even a thing?!!!!!!!! But that's not all! We've got our regular news coverage to go over, running down series that have ended or are ending soon and some exciting new licenses courtesy of Kodansha USA. Plus, we discuss the latest two Jump Starts, Demon Prince Poro's Diaries and Hungry Marie! Do these two new comedies bring some fresh humor to Jump's lineup, or are their jokes as stale and stagnant as Keijo!!!!!!!!'s sales? Why not spend your next lazy Sunday afternoon listening to this podcast and find out! In this week's special bonus episode we run down the results of our first annual survey! We discuss the statistics and what you guys like most about the show, as well as suggestions on how to improve it moving forward. On November 13th 1996, Rumiko Takahashi's feudal fairy tale InuYasha began its serialization in Weekly Shonen Sunday, where it would continue to run for a nearly 12-year run. From the very beginning, InuYasha was wildly popular and successful both in Japan and internationally, and its popularity and influence on anime fandom are still indelible nearly a decade since it's conclusion. In honor of 20 years of InuYasha, Manga Mavericks' resident Rumic World expert LumRanmaYasha has recruited their brother and previous guest VlordGTZ to discuss the legacy of the series. We explore the origins of why InuYasha was created, how several characters came to be, and the history of InuYasha in North America. Then, we answer some Q&As asked of us by fans on Reddit, and discuss our favorite moments from the series, as well as commenting on Rumiko Takahashi's own. So sit, boy, and listen to us talk about everyone's favorite dog-eared half-demon. Don't worry, we promise it won't take as long as actually reading/watching the series! Disclaimer: You may hear a lot of sirens going off in the background of this episode. Let's just say the neighborhood I live in is always very noisy. Normally, we've been able to edit them out, but this week was a no-go, unfortunately. Just a heads up for those of you wondering what the heck that's about. Editor's Note, 2020: In this episode, Lum repeatedly refers to themselves with an epithet that includes an unfortunate slur. We were much younger and not as socially and critically conscious back then as we are now, and in retrospect, we find the use of this pejorative in a self-deprecating sense excruciatingly in poor taste and cringey. We humbly ask you to keep in mind that the use of this term in this podcast does not reflect upon what we consider acceptable to say now.
