Revisit the watershed 40-month legal dispute between SM Entertainment and former TVXQ members, that has seen a repeat attempt by three EXO members recently. Synopsis: Can I Tell You Something Crazy is a new scripted series every month under the #PopVultures banner, which examines with fresh eyes, events that shook Asian media and entertainment. In 2009, the five-man K-pop boy band TVXQ were on top of the world. Their fourth album Mirotic was the best-selling album of 2008 in South Korea, with over half a million copies sold, while the hit title track Mirotic swept wins at awards shows and gained fans around the world. With 800,000 fans in their Korean fan club - the most of any K-pop group at the time - and 200,000 fans in their Japanese fan club, TVXQ were superstars. As one of the earliest breakout K-pop groups of the Hallyu wave in the early 2000s, they were the first Korean act to headline a concert in Malaysia and the first Korean group invited to perform at the Japanese New Year's Eve music programme Kohaku Uta Gassen. But everything came to a halt in July 2009. At the peak of their popularity, three members of the group - Hero Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun and Xiah Junsu, who would later come to be known as JYJ - sued their management agency SM Entertainment and asked to be let go from their contracts. But fellow members U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin, insisted on staying with the company, splitting the group's considerable fandom in two. Hot on the heels of the recent attempt by three members of another SM Entertainment group - Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin of EXO - to terminate their contracts with the company, #PopVultures host Jan Lee revisits the watershed 40-month legal dispute between SM Entertainment and former TVXQ members. 31 December is New Year's Eve. I ate soba (buckwheat noodles). At night I watched TV with my family. At 11.30 we went to the shrine and at 12 o'clock we did the countdown. Then we did Hatsumo at the shrine. There is a small shrine in front of my father's house. It is usually quiet, but during New Year's it is very lively. This is because many people come to the shrine for Hatsumode. We stood in line for about 20 minutes. We prayed for the health of our family. We drew the omikuji. It was 'daikichi' (great luck). It is said that good things will happen. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

Do you like mochi (rice cakes)? This is a Kagamimochi. This is a big mochi. Kagamimochi are a Japanese New Year decoration. You can buy it at supermarkets or Japanese sweets shops. On top of the mochi, orange is placed and it's put inside the house. White mochi and mikan are pretty. And bright. The god of the new year comes to this mochi.

Frank didn't notice the Frank & Friends Show iPhone case in the selfie that Kathryn recently posted on her Facebook and Instagram accounts. Knoxville got less snow than surrounding areas due to the “horseshoe effect.” Kathryn likes to watch WeatherNation because they play weather all day long. Frank hates snow and ice because he broke his arm on the ice when he was 13 and crashed his car on the ice when he was 23. Frank didn't drive downtown to Kathryn's board meeting and joined via Zoom instead. He likes being able to do his LakeFM radio show from his house rather than drive through the snow to the studio. Kathryn likes playing in the snow with her dog Sasha. Frank used to emcee the Knox Asian Festival when he worked for the radio sponsor of the festival. This year, he was asked to emcee a Japanese New Year Celebration. In Japan, New Year's Day is a bigger deal than Christmas. Frank drew the Japanese character for wealth at the calligraphy booth. Frank once organized a Chinese New Year celebration on KROQ. They broadcast the morning show from the Panda Inn in Pasadena and had a live performance by Tori Amos.  Frank only knows a few words in Japanese. Many people know that thank you is “domo arigato.” You're welcome is “dou itashimashite.” As he was being introduced to some Japanese speakers, the only words he could pick out were “Frank-san.” Frank enjoyed a mochi cake at the Japanese New Year celebration. Kathryn bought a frozen mochi treat similar to ice cream in New York.  This episode is sponsored by Steve's Tree Service. They have excellent ratings on Facebook, Google, Yelp, and neighborhood apps. こんにちは。 In episode #108, I introduced the practice of putting up a shime-kazari decoration at the end of the year before welcoming the Japanese New Year. So when do you remove the shime-kazari in January? And how long do you keep the Kagamimochi(鏡餅) on display? First of all, New Year's is an event to welcome the god of the year, Toshigami-sama(年神様). The New Year is an event to welcome the Toshigami, the god of agriculture who is responsible for a good harvest. It is also said that the New Year's God comes to the house on New Year's Day to bring good luck for the year and sweep away bad luck. The New Year's ornaments(Sime-kazari) are used as landmarks to welcome the New Year's god into the house. It also serves as a substitute for the gods when they stay in the house. The kadomatsu(門松) and shime-zashiki(しめ飾り) can be left on display during the period known as the "inside of the pine tree". This is the time when the New Year's festivities begin. This is the period between the beginning of the New Year and the return of the gods. This period differs from region to region. In the Kanto, Tohoku, and Kyushu regions, the period lasts until January 7, and in the Kansai region, January 15. (In the Kanto, Tohoku and Kyushu regions, the period of time varies from region to region. Kagamimochi is usually displayed until January 11th, the day of Kagami-biraki(鏡開き). On the day of Kagami-biraki, the rice cake is opened (pounded with a wooden hammer to break it open) and served with ozoni or soup stock. On Kagami-biraki day, the rice cakes are opened (by beating the cakes with a wooden hammer) and eaten as zoni or soup. Now, in today's episode, I'd like to introduce Japanese winter food. Here are some of the many winter foods of Japan. 鍋(Nabe, Hot pot) しゃぶしゃぶ(Shabu shabu) カニ鍋(Kani nabe, crab hot pot) ちゃんこ鍋(Chanko nabe) すき焼き(Suki Yaki, thin slices of beef, cooked with various vegetables in a table-top cast-iron pan) 石焼き芋(Ishi Yaki Imo, sweet potatoes baked in hot stones ズワイガニ(Zuwai Gani, snow crab ) Hot pot is the best thing to eat on a cold day! じゃあ、またね

On this week's Special Sauce, we take a deep dive into The Gaijin Cookbook: Japanese Recipes from a Chef, Father, Eater, and Lifelong Outsider, the new cookbook from Ivan Orkin and Chris Ying. We pick up where we left off in last week's conversation, and Chris and Ivan talk about how this new project came about. They said that while their previous collaboration, Ivan Ramen: Love, Obsession, and Recipes from Tokyo's Most Unlikely Noodle Joint was received well, they decided they'd like to try writing a book that was more focused on cooking. And, as Chris tells me, as they tried to figure out what that book would look like, "I wanted to figure out specifically what it was that made a Japanese cookbook from Ivan and me worth buying or what the perspective was that made sense. We...pretty quickly arrived at this thing that Ivan's a gaijin. I'm a Chinese guy; I'm a gaijin. We can't hide that. There's no pretending otherwise." After they figured out an approach, the rest was relatively simple: Ivan supplying the recipes and the anecdotes, and Chris figuring out how to cobble them together into an organized whole. And the result is a book filled with observations about Japan that are incredibly personal, accompanied by recipes and guides for how to enjoy them. For example, here's Ivan talking about Japanese New Year: "So, New Year's food, it's a little like Shabbos. You cook all day on Friday and then you turn off the stove, you got your cholent on the stone thing and you just eat from that and you relax. Japanese New Year's, you cook all these things, a lot of the little treats have different meanings about long life and sweetness and bitterness and whatever...On New Year's Day, you wake up in the morning and...everybody in the country just sits down and watches TV and drinks and eats delicious food." In addition to Chris and Ivan, Kenji and Stella pop up in the episode to dispense some advice. Kenji fields a question from Christian Hiller, who's looking for some advice about competing on the Swedish version of MasterChef. Stella, on the other hand, comes on to talk pie dough, just in time for Thanksgiving, the biggest pie day of all. Chris and Ivan on Japanese food, Kenji on cooking competitions, and Stella on pie dough?
