Is there a formula for success? What do you do when "A new twist on something familiar" starts to feel overly simplistic? Enter editor Ivan Taurisano, editor at Abrams, who works from the opposite direction of most editors: he can think of a concept that's marketable, then put together the team to make it happen. We discuss: ***Collaborating with Licensing Partners: Ivan works closely with major brands like Disney, Netflix, and others to create books that resonate with current market trends. ***Data-Driven Decision Making: Unlike traditional editors who wait for manuscripts, Ivan actively seeks out market trends and creates content that meets those demands. ***Monitoring Bestseller Lists: Checking Amazon and New York Times bestseller lists to identify common themes and outliers. ***Examining BISAC Codes: Understanding how books are categorized to spot market trends. ***Creating Engaging and Humorous Content: Books should be fun and engaging for children, encouraging a love of reading. ***Finding the Sweet Spot: Balancing humor and content that resonates with children while being appropriate for parents. Ivan Taurisano was born in Rome, Italy, and moved to the United States almost ten years ago to pursue a children's book publishing career. The guiding principle of his work is that a child whose life is changed by a book will always be a step closer to becoming an adult who will change the world. Ivan's all-time favorite book is James and the Giant Peach, and his best friend is a chihuahua named Bilbo. Ivan has a BA in English and Creative Writing, an MA in Children's Literature, and an MFA in Writing for Children. He started his career at Sourcebooks as an Editorial Assistant, then moved on to become an Assistant Editor. His responsibilities included developing children's board books, picture books, and graphic novels, as well as acquiring board books and picture books. Ivan has worked with many successful series and brands, including How to Catch, Little Heroes Big Hearts, Sesame Street, Disney, Tokidoki, and Pokémon. Currently, Ivan lives in New York and works at Abrams as an Associate Editor on the Children's Entertainment Publishing and Content Development team. In this role, he focuses novelty books, board books, graphic novels, and select MG and YA titles. He is especially interested in stories with a strong commercial hook, crave-able content, compelling characters, and series potential. Board books and picture books: Ivan is interested in children's board books and picture books that are kid-centric, interactive, character-driven, and have series potential. He enjoys titles with a strong hook, fun read-alouds, great rhymes, bold and playful imaginative stories, books that break the fourth wall and invite reader participation, as well as seasonal stories such as Christmas and Halloween. MG: Ivan is interested in plot-driven, action-packed adventures with a strong commercial hook, compelling characters, magic, quests/competitions, and high stakes. YA: Ivan prefers strong commercial hooks, well-plotted, character-driven, atmospheric stories, and series potential. He loves fantasy, magic, and quests/competitions. He likes unique, morally grey characters, memorable villains, and propulsive, cinematic writing. Ivan is not the best fit for nonfiction, retellings, historical fiction, biographies, and novels in verse. *** Schedule a meeting with Ivan here: https://manuscriptacademy.com/faculty-members/ivan-taurisano

DesignerCon returns for its 18th Annual events from the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA, running from December 15-17, 2023. We were thrilled to speak with Ben Goretsky about DesignerCon, how things have evolved from a collector convention to a full blown designer event with talent around the world as well as Vinny growing up and becoming Vincent. The 2023 convention will welcome 600 vendors and over 350 artists and designers for a diverse array of programming and products, including the return of DCON fan-favorites: MEDICOM TOY, Tokidoki, POPMART, SHEIN X, MightyJaxx, How2Work, Good Smile, 3DRetro and many more. Goretsky takes us through the years of DesignerCon and what to expect for this year's event with quite a few surprises. Especially with the recently announced Corey Feldman signing of his limited edition Funko Pop. Throughout 2023 and 2024, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Hollywood Sign Trust, The City of Los Angeles and Evolution, joins forces with DesignerCon to provide an engaging fan experience. The Hollywood 100 Art Show, curated by Carmen Acosta, will feature 100 local and international artists, each of whom will customize and display a Hollywood Sign figurine designed by Onch. All 100 unique and individually-stylized pieces will be displayed at the event, ahead of their 2024 presentation at the heart of Hollywood Boulevard as part of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce's efforts to honor the history and enduring legacy of the Hollywood Sign. Adding to DCON's 2023 theme of Hollywood, the event will also feature a Hollywood Pavillion, in collaboration with several companies to produce limited edition items for sale. Vendors like Tokidoki, artist Michael Kalish, renowned designer ONCH, among others, will be included in the Pavilion setup. A limited number of tickets are still available for DesignerCon and can be purchased at tickets.designercon.com. This week, we consider the lasting impact of Takashi Murakami's Superflat art movement on the chaotic visual landscape of the 21st century. The youthful funkiness of "Frutiger Metro," the punk orientalism of Tokidoki, and the dystopian cheekiness of Gorillaz all epitomize the hybridization of cultural symbols between East and West and the flattening of art and consumer culture. We reflect on the Y2K revival of Atompunk, nostalgia for the utopian promise of Microsoft Windows, and the importance of lime green in a girl's bid for independence.Pinterest BoardLinks:Tokidoki: Cute and Sexy Fantasies between East and West Tragedy and the Superflat by Daniel Moldoveanu for SpikeWhat is Frutiger Aero? by Laura Holliday for DazedSuperflat Pop via CARI InstituteFrank Ocean's Homer vs Kareem Rashid's DigipopHappy99NEW YORK - night n day album artTokidoki Character GuideTokidoki Healthy Besties Blindbox This is a public episode. Pooneh has lived the entrepreneur life for the past 25 years and has experienced the trials and tribulations of starting and scaling a business. She is currently the CEO and Co-Founder of Tokidoki a sought after global lifestyle brand with a cult like following which has had partnerships with Hello Kitty, Karl Lagerfeld, LeSportsac, Barbie, Sephora, Marvel and many others. She also cofounded Hard Candy, the ground breaking nail polish and cosmetics brand, with her sister Dineh which they scaled and sold to LVMH, Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA, in 1999. In this fascinating interview Pooneh walks us through the early days of Hard Candy, when her sister was creating and mixing colors for their revolutionary nail polish in a bath tub, selling their first bottle on consignment at Fred Segal and the complexities of a family partnership. We also touch on how her and her ex-husband, serial entrepreneur Ivan Arnold stumbled upon Simone Legno's brilliant artistic universe and the vision which led to the formation of Tokidoki. Pooneh has experienced the pitfalls of start up culture, the challenges of explosive growth, the euphoria of selling to a large multinational conglomerate and the hundreds of interconnected relationships which can make you or break you. This is a true testament to mental toughness, grit, passion and perseverance the core ingredients behind every successful endeavor. School is in session. It's been a while since we've had a relatively straight-forward episode with just our two Mavericks discussing the news, huh? Well, don't get used to it. We've got a lot of plans and a lot of guests booked for the show for the next couple of weeks. But it's nice to get back to basics for an episode, a breather before we cover more big topics and guest appearances. This week we discuss the latest licenses, recent cancellations, and the most exciting new series on the horizon, while also eulogizing the death of the great late Jiro Taniguchi. On top of all that, we've got lengthy discussions of Naoshi Komi's heart-stopping one-shot Tokidoki, the latest Jump Starts We Never Learn and U19, and top it all off with the main headliner of this episode, Yoshitoki Oima's newest series To Your Eternity! It's good, you guys. It's really, really good. Go read it. After listening to this podcast, of course. Somebody told me there was some new cool stuff for your Xbox Avatars today and when I looked on the Marketplace I discovered that Tokidoki had opened a storefront on the Xbox Marketplace. Tokidoki is a Japanese inspired brand created by Italian artist Simone Legno that produces a variety of products such as clothes, watches, handbags, toys, and even stylized memory sticks. The art depicted on them ranges from ultra cute to stylish and sexy. Tokidoki even has original characters that get depicted on their merchandise. I am part of the new Xbox Live preview so users not participating in it will not be able to access the Marketplace for Avatars until August 11. The Tokidoki store features shirts, caps, watches, and even two cool looking skateboards that your avatar interacts with. The clothes run around 80 microsoft points while the skateboards are 240. There is also a "Steampunk" store whose prices run about the same. I've been meaning to put up some links on my blog for Japanese and Japanese influenced merchandise retailers. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow. Check out the Tokidoki website (The human one). It's pretty cool: http://www.tokidoki.it/
