Lukujonossa kokeilemme tänään kahta pitkään odottamaamme sarjaa, jotka ovat Daruma Matsuuran uusi seinenrymistely Steel of the Celestial Shadows sekä Alto Yukimuran rennon mukava shoujosarja Colette Decides to Die. --- Kommentoi | Threads | Mastodon | Bluesky | X | Instagram --- (01:12) – KUULUMISET: DESUCON FROSTBITE 2025 - Desucon Frostbiten ohjelmakartta (03:49) – KUULUMISET: VUODEN 2024 ANIMET - TsumaSho - Sarja Crunchyrollissa - Sengoku Youko - Sarja Crunchyrollissa - Jakso 70, jossa puhuimme sarjasta Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer - Jakso 99, jossa puhuimme sarjasta Spirit Circle - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End - Sarja Crunchyrollissa - Jakso 87, jossa puhuimme ajankohtaisosiossa Shonen Sunday -lehden suunnanmuutoksesta - Jakson 26 taistelukohtaus (YouTube) - Mysterious Disappearances - Sarja Crunchyrollissa - Otherside Picnic - Ai Fairouz - The Apothecary Diaries - Sarja Crunchyrollissa - Yatagarasu - Sarja Crunchyrollissa - Delicious in Dungeon - Sarja Netflixissä - Jakso 9, jossa puhuimme sarjasta - Netflix ehti jo tätä ennen julkaista viikoittain sarjat: - Komi Can't Communicate, syksy 2021 (latecast) - Blue Period, syksy 2021 (latecast) - Uncle From Another World, kesä 2022 - Vinland Saga 2, talvi 2023 - My Happy Marriage, kesä 2023 - The Magical Girl and Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies - Sarja Crunchyrollissa - Inu × Boku SS - As Miss Beelzebub Likes - Dan Da Dan - Sarja Crunchyrollissa - Jakso 62, jonka kuulijakommenttiosiossa puhuimme mangan alusta - Science Saru -studio - Yakuza Fiancé - Sarja Crunchyrollissa - OP (YouTube) - ED (YouTube) - Kuroshitsuji: Public School Arc OP (YouTube) (35:45) – PÄÄHENKILÖT: ESITTELY – Jakso 76, jossa puhuimme pahiksista (36:48) – PÄÄHENKILÖT: TERMIMÄÄRITTELYITÄ – Lani Diane Richin How Story Works -kirja avoimessa levityksessä Richin nettisivuilla ja äänikirja samannimisen podcastin uusimpina jaksoina (alkaen jaksosta nimeltä “How Story Works: The Audiobook“) – Jakso 16, jossa puhuimme sarjasta Takane & Hana –The Lancer -arkkityyppi – Caesar Antonio Zeppeli – Yona of the Dawn Antisankareita: – Lupin III – Jakso 103, jossa puhuimme siitä, että One Piecen Nereidisaari-juonikaaressa Olkihatut eivät halua olla sankareita – Trafalgar Law (One Piece) – Kiritsugu Emiya (Fate/Zero) – Ciel Phantomhive (Kuroshitsuji) – Jakso 50, jossa puhuimme Kuroshitsujista Pahisprotagonisteja: – Light Yagami – Zera (Lychee Light Club) – Pahisprotagonistin ja antisankarin eroa mietimme myös jakson 102 keskustelussa Lychee Light Clubista – Sebastian (Kuroshitsuji) (54:48) – PÄÄHENKILÖT: PÄÄHENKILÖT JOTKA KATSOVAT JA JOITA KATSOTAAN – JoJo Part 4:ssa Josuke Higashikata ja Kooichi Hirase muodosta vanhemmille shounen-sarjoille tyypillisen päähenkilöparivaljakon, jossa Kooichi on samaistuttava näkökulmapäähenkilö ja Josuke on todellinen päähenkilö, jonka lukija näkee Kooichin silmien kautta Shounen-romansseja, joissa poika on päähenkilö, joka katsoo ja tyttö on päähenkilö, jota katsotaan: – Fly Me to the Moon – Komi Can't Communicate – Call of the Night – The Dangers in My Heart Sama toimii myös shoujo-romansseissa toiseen suuntaan: – Jakso 40, jossa puhuimme sarjasta Aoha Ride – Numasugite mohaya koi – Wild Adapter Mainittuja pelisovituksia: – Brothers Conflict – Idolish7 (01:07:45) – PÄÄHENKILÖT: PÄÄHENKILÖ- JA ENSEMBLE-VETOISUUS – Tyypillisesti päähenkilövetoisia genrejä: – Narou-kei-tyyliä edustavat ranobet, joista puhuimme jaksossa 51 –The Rising of the Shield Hero – Romanssit –Tyypillisesti ensemble-vetoisia genrejä: – Shounen-toimintasarjat – Neoshounensarjat – Karneval – K-On! --- Kommentoi | Threads | Mastodon | Bluesky | X | Instagram --- (01:01) – KUULUMISET: JAKSO 100 LÄHESTYY (01:46) – KUULUMISET: TABICINE - Jakso 92, jossa Petteri kertoi käyneensä Japanissa - TabiCinen nettisivut - The Good Father -elokuvan traileri (YouTube) - Hiroshi Tamaki - Nodame Cantabile - The Silent Service - Golden Kamuy - Sara Minami - Netflixin uusi Kimin ni todoke (13:16) – MIKSI KAIKKI MANGA NÄYTTÄÄ SAMALTA: ESITTELY (14:37) – MIKSI KAIKKI MANGA NÄYTTÄÄ SAMALTA: MANGAN MÄÄRITELMÄ - Dramacon ja Sword Princess Amaltea eivät ole mangaa, vaikka jäljittelevätkin mangatyyliä - Mainittuja rajatapauksia: - Felipe Smithin manga Peepo Choo - Minami Sakain manga I Bombed a Pull So Bad it Yeeted Me into an Otome Game, so I'm Gonna Clear My Best Boy's Route! - Shotaro Ishinomorin manga(?) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - Thermae Romae - Prophecy - Beyond the Clouds - Tsugumi Project - Radiant (ranskalainen mangatyylinen sarjakuva, josta tehtiin animesovitus) - Indie-puolelta kohoaa nykyisin paljon suosikkeja myös kaupalliselle puolelle: - The Girl That Can't Get a Girlfriend - One-Punch Man, josta puhuimme jaksossa 32 - Mob Psycho 100 - My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness, josta puhuimme jaksossa 28 - Nykyisin länsimaiset mangan parissa kasvaneet sarjakuvataiteilijat tekevät sarjakuvaa, josta näkyy mangavaikutteita mutta joka ei pyri suoraan jäljittelemään mangaa - Alice Oseman - Svetlana Schmakova - Anni K. (30:55) – MIKSI KAIKKI MANGA NÄYTTÄÄ SAMALTA: JAPANI ON SAARI - Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san - Monet merkittävät mangakat on poimittu omakustannetapahtumista kaupalliseen julkaisuun - Ken Akamatsu - CLAMP - Horimiya on kaupallisen sovitus nettimangasta Hori-san and Miyamura-kun - Kaiju Girl Caramelise - “Tyttöjen sarjoja” julkaistaan nykyään yhä enemmän “poikien lehdissä”, koska kaikki haluavat uusia lukijoita - RuriDragon, jota puhuimme jaksossa 70 - Jakso 87, jossa puhuimme siitä, miten entinen päätoimittaja Takenori Ichihara uudisti paikalleen pysähtynyttä Shonen Sunday -lehteä - Patriootti Moriarty ja Kuroshitsuji muistuttavat toisiaan - Harta-lehti, jonka tyyliä Kaoru Mori on määrittänyt paljon, minkä takia myös Bird ihmemaassa muistuttaa visuaalisesti Morin sarjoja, kuten Aron morsiamia - Harta-tyylillä on seuraajia myös muissa lehdissä ilmestyvissä sarjoissa, esimerkiksi Arte - 7 kuolemansyntiä ja Fairy Tail muistuttavat toisiaan - Nobuyuki Fukumoto johtaa omaa tyylisuuntaansa, johon kuuluu esimerkiksi Minami no teioo - Uniikkejakin tyylejä löytyy - Kazuya Minekura - Nagabe - Kamome Shirahama - Inio Asano - Eiichiro Oda - Jun Mochizukista ja Yana Tobososta huomaa välittömästi, että molemmat piirtävät neoshounenia - Kauhutoimintamangaa ei kauheasti englanniksi julkaista - Pumpkin Night - Monkey Peak - Junji Ito - Kazuo Umezu (50:10) – MIKSI KAIKKI MANGA NÄYTTÄÄ SAMALTA: MANGASILMÄT - Jakso 91, jossa puhuimme sarjasta The Girl from the Other Side - Dowman Saymanin piirrosjäljessä näkyy Mike Mignolan vaikutus - Cherry Magicin Kurosawalla (kuva) on pieni hymyjuonne silmien alapuolella tuomassa persoonallisuutta hahmosuunnitteluun - Oshi no kon päähenkilön toisessa silmässä kiiluu pahaenteinen tähti (kuva) - Heijastuksen puute kertoo usein hahmon lakonisesta persoonasta, masentuneisuudesta tai itseyden puutteesta - Silmien näyttämättä jättäminen merkitsee sitä, että hahmon todellinen ilme piilotetaan (Saiyuki) - Hahmoa ei ole esitelty ennen kuin silmät on näytetty (kuva, Death Note) - Koko ajan silmät kiinni piirretyt hahmot ovat usein salaperäisiä ja vaikeasti luettavia - Ajinin Satoo - Kuroshitsujin Lau - …ja jos tällainen hahmo avaakin silmänsä, se on merkittävä kerronnallinen hetki (kuva, Kuroshitsuji) - Pokémonin Brockin kiinniolevat silmät ovat mysteeri, koska niiden kiinnioloon ei tunnu liittyvän mitään kerronnallista merkitystä (01:00:00) – MIKSI KAIKKI MANGA NÄYTTÄÄ SAMALTA: MUITA MANGAN OMINAISPIIRTEITÄ - Mustavalkoisuus - Rasterien ja harmaasävyjen käyttö - Jakso 93, jossa puhuimme rasterifirma IC:n haastattelusta - Reverse Thievesin vuoden 2010 blogipostaus siitä, miten länsimaisessa “mangatyylisessä” sarjakuvassa (“OEL manga”) käytetään harmaasävyjä usein varjostamiseen, toisin kuin mangassa on tapana - Tenken on harvinainen esimerkki mangasta jossa käytetään harmaasävyjä länsimaistyylisesti, joten se pistää silmään ja tuntuu epämangamaiselta – etenkin koska kyse on tasaisista harmaasävyistä eikä rasterista (kuva) - Shoujo Fight on toinen esimerkki, joskaan ei ihan niin äärimmäinen - Negatiivisen tilan käyttö - Inio Asanon tyyli - Kengo Hanazawan tyyli - Maaretin blogipostaus Pandora Heartsin kohtauksesta, joka alkaa sillä, että negatiivinen tila pysäyttää luku-flow'n - Ogeretsu Tanakan negatiivisen tilan käytöstä (kuva, Daisy Jealousy) puhuimme jaksossa 88 - Kuvakerronnan kieli täynnä symboliikkaa (hikipisarat, kiristyvät otsasuonet, chibihahmot, alastomat astraalivartalot, järkytyksestä kadonneet pupillit) - Katseenkuljetus - Mangakerronnalle tyypillinen S-rakenne toistuu BL-manga Unfazed by the Disaster in My Lifessa lähes joka sivulla - Petterin twiitti Vorosta - Petterin twiitti Shigeru Mizukista - Rachel Thornin twiitti mangan T-risteyksistä - Telophasen Livejournal-postaus katseenkuljetuksesta (vaatii nykyään sisäänkirjautumisen) - Fruits Basket vs. Descendants of Darkness - Jakso 80, jossa puhuimme Nana & Kaorusta ja mainitsimme, että tekijän varhaisemmissa sarjoissa hän ei osannut katseenkuljetusta (kuva) - Ruutuasettelut ja sivusommittelut - Japanijulkaisuissa mangassa käytetään tyypillisesti useita fontteja sekaisin, kun taas länsijulkaisuissa rajoitetaan fonttien määrää (paitsi Verticalin vanhoissa julkaisuissa, jotka pyrkivät toistamaan alkuperäisen fonttikakofonian) - Ääniefektit, joista puhuimme jaksossa 66 - Ogiue Maniaxin blogipostaus vuodelta 2010, jossa huomautetaan Reverse Thievesin blogipostauksen innoittamana, että OEL-manga näyttää itse asiassa enemmän animelta kuin mangalta (01:23:01) – MIKSI KAIKKI MANGA NÄYTTÄÄ SAMALTA: ERI GENREJEN OMINAISPIIRTEET - Banana Fish - Akira - Blade of the Immortal - Lone Wolf and Cub - Vagabond (01:28:37) – MIKSI KAIKKI MANGA NÄYTTÄÄ SAMALTA: BL-SARJAT - My New Boss Is Goofy ei ole BL-sarja, mutta käyttää hyväkseen BL-estetiikkaa - Geikomi, jota toisinaan edelleen baraksi kutsutaan - BL-estetiikka eroaa tytöille suunnattujen söpöpoikasarjojen estetiikasta, johon liittyy lennokkaampaa suunnittelua ja värikoodausta (tällaiset sarjat ovat myös usein anime- tai monimediatuoteperheitä enemmän kuin ensisijaisesti mangasarjoja) - Ryman's Club (sulkapallopojat) - Free! (uimapojat) - Tsurune (jousiammuntapojat) - Re-Main (vesipoolopojat) - Prince of Stride (parkour-pojat) - Backflip!! (voimistelijapojat) - Hypnosis Mic (räppipojat) - Sk8 the Infinity (skeittaajapojat) - IDOLiSH7 (idolipojat) - Cherry Magic! on hyvin samantyyppinen sarja kuin My New Boss Is Goofy, mutta se sen sijaan on oikea BL-manga - Poikkeuksellisen näköistä poikarakkautta: - Tetuzoh Okayada: Man of Tango - Syundei: Go for It, Nakamura!, josta puhuimme jaksossa 2 - Zakk: Canis - Hidebu Takahashi: Yuki & Matsu, josta puhuimme jaksossa 37 - Thanat: Here and There and Us - Tyypillisemmän näköistä poikarakkautta: - Ogeretsu Tanaka - Harada - Psyche Delico - Shoko Hidaka - Kou Yoneda - Tsuta Suzuki - Kei Ichikawa - Maki Marukido - Shikke (01:40:45) – MIKSI KAIKKI MANGA NÄYTTÄÄ SAMALTA: TOIMINTASHOUNENSARJAT - Dragon Ballin tyylijälkeläisiä: - Yu Yu Hakusho - Hunter × Hunter - Yu-Gi-Oh! - Fullmetal Alchemist - Naruto - Fairy Tail - My Hero Academia - Undead Unluck - Rurouni Kenshinin tyylijälkeläisiä: - Bleach - Jujutsu Kaisen - Chainsaw Man - Titaanien sota - Dandadan (01:45:56) – MIKSI KAIKKI MANGA NÄYTTÄÄ SAMALTA: SHOUJOTYYLIT - Colleen's Manga Recs -kanava on erikoistunut shoujoon (YouTube) - Seirou Opera - Something's Wrong With Us - Erottuvampaa shoujoa: - Akimi Yoshida - Ai Yazawa - Fumi Yoshinaga - Setona Mizushiro (01:50:35) – MIKSI KAIKKI MANGA NÄYTTÄÄ SAMALTA: YHTEENVETO - Ranskalais-belgialaisen sarjakuvan kolme isoa tyylisuuntaa: - Tintti-henkinen “ligne claire” -tyyli - Uderzo / Franquin -henkinen perunanenätyyli - Blueberry-henkinen realistinen tyyli (01:53:09) – ORANGE SANGATSU MANGALTA - Orange - Anime-lehden uutinen sarjalisenssistä (alkuperäiset julkaisutiedot on kerrottu vähän yksinkertaistaen) - Myös Kageki Shojo!! hyppäsi eri kohdeyleisön lehteen eri kustantajalle - 7 Seeds (01:58:45) – AKIRA TORIYAMAN KUOLEMA - Akira Toriyama - Virallinen ilmoitus Toriyaman kuolemasta Dragon Ballin nettisivuilla - Taustaa: Toriyamalla oli ollut aivokasvain - Helsingin Sanomien muistokirjoitus - Washington Postin muistokirjoitus - Väkijoukko torilla Buenos Airesissa - Vuoden 2009 elokuvan pääosan esittäjä Justin Chatwin pahoitteli elokuvan laatua - Anime-lehden Dragon Ball -aiheinen kääntäjä Antti Valkaman haastattelu - Somessa on jaettu paljon Toriyaman Dr. Slump -komediasarjan alkua edeltävän Shonen Jump -lehden kansikuvaa - …Ja myös tätä fanipiirrosta, joka kuvaa hyvin sitä miten moderni shounenmanga on Dragon Ballille velkaa - Toriyama keksi myös chibihahmot - Toriyaman haastattelu vuodelta 1981 - Jakso 89, jossa puhuimme mangan yhdeksästä vuosikymmenestä, ja jossa Nita huomautti että Dragon Ball popularisoi muistettavat pahikset ja pitkään jatkuvat juonikaaret - Japanilaisten mangakoiden muistokirjoituksia Shonen Jumpin nettisivuilla (japaniksi) - Osamu Tezuka - Viraaliksi mennyt pätkä Japanin viittomakielisistä uutisista, josta kävi ilmi, että Dragon Ballin japanilainen viittoma on kamehameha-energiahyökkäyksen ele - Dragon Ball Kai, animen uudelleenleikattu versio - Dragon Ball Super - Dragon Ball Daima (02:20:07) – KUULIJAKOMMENTTI: KOMMENTOINTIKULTTUURI - Gufin Mastodon-kommentti - Jakso 96, jossa puhuimme Hinako Ashiharan itsemurhasta - Jakso 74, jonka kuulumisissa puhuimme Ruotsin mangakustannustoiminnasta (02:33:29) – KUULIJAKOMMENTTI: KOMI JA KANSIA - Vastasimme Rautaviitosen edellisiin kommentteihin jaksossa 93 - Komi Can't Communicaten tekijä Tomohito Odan sukunimi (小田) lausutaan samalla tavalla kuin One Piecen tekijä Eiichiro Odan sukunimi (尾田), vaikka ne kirjoitetaankin eri tavoilla. - Titaanien sota - Fairy Tail - Jakso 63, jossa puhuimme Givenistä - When Will Ayumu Make His Move? - Jakso 93, jossa puhuimme mangakansista - Komi Can't Communicate -sarjan kannet - One Piecen kansi 89 - Astra – avaruuden haaksirikkoiset -sarjan kannet (emme suosita niiden liian tarkkaa tutkiskelua ennen sarjan lukemista) ja jakso 55, jonka spoileriosiossa puhuimme niistä - Bleachin kannet - Naruton kannet - Soul Eaterin kannet (02:47:45) – KUULIJAKOMMENTTI: BIRD IHMEMAASSA - Antti Valkaman kommentti X:ssä - Jakso 90, jossa puhuimme sarjasta Bird ihmemaassa (02:52:40) – LUKUJONOSSA: TÄLLÄ TAVALLA HÄVITÄÄN AIKASOTA - Tällä tavalla hävitään aikasota - Kirjan Wikipedia-artikkeli (joka spoilaa koko juonen, varoitus) - Jakso 85, jossa puhuimme Bigolas Dickolas Wolfwoodin aikaansaamasta somenosteesta kirjalle - Toisen kirjoittajan hämmentynyt mutta onnellinen blogipostaus - Jakso 94, jossa Maaret nosti kyseisen keskustelun yhdeksi vuoden suosikeistaan - Viimeisten aikojen valtiaat (03:10:56) – LOPETUS

Lukujonossa keskustelemme Go Nagain ronskinraisusta klassikkosarjasta Devilman, joka 1970-luvulla rikkoi mangan rajoja. --- Kommentoi | Mastodon | Twitter (X?) | Instagram --- (01:00) – KUULUMISET: ÄÄNIJÄLKI - Afureko-blogi ja sen Äänijälki-podcast - Afureko Twitterissä - Nita Twitterissä - Mangakartan ja Äänijäljen ystävänpäivätempaus 2022 - Jakso 63, jossa puhuimme ystävänpäivätempauksesta alkukuulumisissa (03:56) – MANGAN VUOSIKYMMENET: ENNEN TEZUKAA - Jean-Marie Bouissoun tietokirja Manga: Histoire et univers de la bande dessinée japonaise - Ukiyo-e-puupiirrosteokset - Hokusai (13:04) – MANGAN VUOSIKYMMENET: 1940-LUKU - Petterin DesuTalks-luento Mies joka loi Osamu Tezukan (YouTube – videotallenne jäi traagisesti isoksi osaksi ilman ääntä, joka alkaa kuulua vasta noin tästä eteenpäin, jos volyymin säätää maksimiin) - Shin Takarajima (1947), Osamu Tezukan läpimurtoteos, joka on sittemmin nostettu modernin mangan alkupisteeksi ja peruskiveksi - Shin Takarajima olikin esillä myös British Museumin manganäyttelyssä vuonna 2019 - Tähän aikaan sarjakuvaa julkaistiin Japanissa lähinnä halpoina (kuva) ja tekijänoikeuksista välittämättöminä (kuva) akahon-julkaisuina, joiden seassa Tezuka erottui edukseen laadullaan - Fujiko Fujio -työpari muistelee jälkikäteen, miten päräyttävältä Shin Takarajiman näkeminen tuntui (kuva) - Floyd Gottfredsson ja hänen piirrostyylinsä, joka on tuttu kaikille vanhoja Aku Ankan taskukirjoja lukeneille - Squash & stretch on animaatioperiaatteista tärkeimpänä pidetty - Comics Journalin artikkelit: - Manga Finds Pirate Gold: The Case of New Treasure Island - Tezuka Osamu Outwits the Phantom Blot: The Case of New Treasure Island Cont'd - Sazae-san (1946–1974)  (19:47) – MANGAN VUOSIKYMMENET: 1950-LUKU - Osamu Tezukan nousukausi - Viidakon valtias (1950), maailmalla tutumpi jenkkinimellään - Petterin kirjoitus Viidakon valtiaasta Anime-lehden numerossa 3/2013 (pdf) - Astro Boy (1952) - Princess Knight (1953) - Tokiwa-so, jossa Tezuka asui 1953-1954 ja josta muodostui Tokion mangapiirtäjien keskus - Shotaro Ishinomori - Fujiko Fujio - Weekly Manga Times (1956) – kustantajansa mukaan ensimmäinen pelkkää mangaa julkaissut lehti (22:56) – MANGAN VUOSIKYMMENET: 1960-LUKU - Viikottaiset mangalehdet rytmittävät nuorten elämää: - Weekly Shonen Magazine (1959) - Weekly Shonen Sunday (1959) - Weekly Shonen Jump (1968) - Weekly Shonen Champion (1969) - Akahon-puolella synkempää ja rankempaa sarjakuvaa alettiin vuodesta 1957 alkaen kutsua gekigaksi (“dramaattiset kuvat”) vastareaktiona lehdissä julkaistavan ja lapsille soveltuvan mangan (“sutaistut kuvat“) suosiolle). On this episode of Manga Mavericks, its time once again to cover the newest series from Shonen Jump, but this time with a special guest! We talk about the first few chapters of Blue Box by Kouji Miura & Candy Flurry by Ippon Takegushi and Santa Mitarashi with founder of the Weekly Shogakukan Edition blog and Twitter, Sakaki (@kiirobon)! We also discuss our usual round of monthly news, including Chainsaw dominating in manga sales on the latest Bookscan list, Funimation licensing the entire Prince of Tennis franchise, and last but certainly not least, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train's (continuous) runaway success at the North American box office in its first weekend! Black Lives Matter.  Manga Mavericks stands in support of Black Americans and against the systemic racism and violence perpetrated by the police and the U.S. government.  There are many ways to help the Black Lives Matter movement, be it engaging in the protests yourselves or by donating to those fighting on the front lines. We’ve included links in the description of this podcast for people to learn more about petitions to sign and places to donate. We’ve donated all of our Patreon earnings from this year and hundreds of our own dollars to Bail Funds and Charities supporting progressive movements for change across the country, and if you can give, we strongly encourage you to do so. Otherwise, you can even watch videos donating all their ad money to charities too. Again, there are many ways to help, and every bit counts. To quote a great moment from The Boondocks: "What do you do when you can't do nothing, but there's nothing you can do?" "You do what you can."  In that spirit, we’re also supporting and amplifying Black creatives in our community. We’ll be leaving links to them and their work, and links of where to find other great Black creatives doing great work in this community. Please check all these fine folks out. We’ll also be leaving links to organizations, charities, and petitions to help support Black Lives Matter protests and victims of police brutality.  There’s another tragic bit of news we also must address: Zac Bertschy passed away on the week of May 19th, 2020. Zac was the executive editor in chief at Anime News Network, overseeing its editorial department. He was the host of ANNcast, the writer of Vice and Luna, and the original Answerman. He was always, in my eyes, the face, voice, and heart of Anime News Network. We’ll be leaving links to various people’s tributes and memories of Zac, including the final ANNcast, and links to some of the work of his I really appreciated over the years, including Answerman, ANNcast, Vice & Luna, his reviews of Death Parade and Keep Your Hands off Eizouken, and many others.   There’s so much to say about Zac Bertschy and the legacy he’s left. But right now, there’s just one thing that I must say: Rest in Peace, Zac. See you over the rainbow. This is a news episode that was delayed and made sort of out of date because of the above stories and others that happened almost immediately after we recorded it in mid-May. Please keep that in mind as you listen through that there’s a lot of parts re-recorded or added on after the fact. That said, we had a lot to cover, including the endings of some popular series, new license announcements, COVID-related delays, Netflix additions, and the titular question on everyone’s mind: Who Did Sesshomaru FUCK?! There’s plenty of news we don’t cover in this episode we’ll get to in a future installment, but it’s good to break these things up anyway lest we have another four-hour long podcast. You can be sure that this will also not be the last time we discuss Black Lives Matter and have conversations on important political and social topics on the show either. What’s going on matters way more than any of the manga we talk about, so while we hope to entertain with our podcast, we also want to make sure we don’t distract from what’s going on in the world and are amplifying voices and causes that matter.  Please visit the webpage of this podcast for the list of links we included in this post: http://all-comic.com/2020/manga-mavericks-ep-121-who-did-sesshomaru-fck PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 00:00 - Black Lives Matter 03:35 - Community Shout-Outs: Black Creatives in our Community You Should Follow 14:14 - Intro & Patron Thank You News: 16:05 - New York Times May List 17:20 - April Bookscan list  22:44 - Demon Slayer’s Ending, Spinoffs, & Circulation Numbers 28:36 - Yuuna of the Haunted Hot Springs ends  30:02 - Bunta Kinami’s RWBY: The Official Manga ends  32:04 - Hinamatsuri ends on July 15th 32:45  - Oda’s One Piece update  34:57 - Boichi will draw an adaptation of One Piece: Ace novels  37:11 - Possible future Shonen Jump delays  39:18 - Golgo 13 goes on its first hiatus in 52 years due to COVID concerns 40:30 - Atsushi Okubo mentions that Fire Force is in its final stretch  41:22 - Akiko Higashimura’s new manga  42:27 - Ryoichi Ikegami’s new manga 43:27 - Fruits Basket The Three Musketeers arc manga launches 2nd season 44:08 - Yen Press will simulpub Fruits Basket: The Three Musketeers & Fruits Basket Another chapter 13  44:33 - Yen Press Star Wars licenses 46:18 - Jujutsu Kaisen & Demon Slayer Gaps Filled in Shonen Jump Vault 48:11 - Kodansha & Vertical release manga digitally on InkyPen  49:03 - Kodansha Comics licenses new manga for digital debut in June  54:36 - Kodansha drops Drops of God volume 12-22 on Comixology  55:38 - Cross Infinite World licenses Hello I Am a Witch and My Crush Wants Me to Make a Love Potion novels 56:40 - Drawn & Quarterly to Publish Yoshiharu Tsuge's Red Flowers, Shigeru Mizuki's Tono Monogatari Manga 59:57 -  New Seven Seas licenses 1:15:00 - Tentai Books licenses 1:18:48 - Manga Planet licenses 11 new cat manga  1:24:44 - New Futekiya licenses  1:26:26  - Manga Rock shuts down with launch of INKR comics 1:28:16 - Former Viz exec moves to Netflix  1:28:50 - New Crunchyroll J-APAC Content Strategy Head 1:29:27 - Con cancellations & Virtual Cons 1:32:40 - Anime postponements 1:35:03 - New Prince of Tennis anime 1:36:06 - New InuYasha sequel series: Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon 1:42:48 - Hollywood’s Gatchaman film will tell an “original story”  1:43:44 - Sony developing One-Punch Man film with Venom writers  1:49:35 - Kingdom Live-Action film gets sequel  1:49:56 -  Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop remake is already planning its second season 1:51:07 - Netflix Anime Announcements 1:53:47 - One Piece dub resumes  1:54:31 - Crunchyroll dubs resume  1:55:05 - Crunchyroll adds City Hunter  1:55:33 - Discotek licenses 1:58:36 - Shonen Jump Vault Opens Up Free Chapters Every Friday  1:59:21 - Shonen Jump+ Contest 2:00:07 - Tezuka Manga Award  2:02:17 - Goo’s Top 10 Shonen Sunday manga list  2:15:02 - Community Shout-Out: Anime Lockdown 2:16:37 - Wrap-Up 2:23:55 - In Memoriam: Zac Bertschy Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and on Youtube! On this episode of Manga Mavericks, we invite on the show Shonen Sunday enthusiast Bomber D. Rufi (aka Sakaki) and comics artist Joey Weiser (Mermin, Ghost Hog) to talk about Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga! After many delays and and much rescheduling, Colton and Lum finally talk about the series that means more to them then just being an excellent comic, but a franchise that's been with them for almost their entire lives! A franchise that went from being the biggest manga in Japan, to one of the biggest shows on Cartoon Network in North America years later, to one of the biggest multimedia empires arguably within the past decade introducing tons of new manga, anime, video games, etc. to further expand upon Toriyama's beloved "Dragon World". The Mavericks and friends spend a some time reminiscing about how they got into the series via airings on Toonami and even fansub VHS tapes, afterwards they attempt to go through the entire series arc-by-arc in order to thoroughly discuss anything and everything they can about it, such as which parts of the story are their favorites, as well certain problematic elements that have become more unavoidable and harder to ignore as we've grown older. Can our heroes cover the entirety of the series before the end of the podcast!? Find out...on DRAGON BALL Z!!! I mean, Manga Mavericks....enjoy. Being in the midst of a massive theatrical rollout of so many films, this was definitely an inevitable choice for us to talk about. And yes, we will be gushing over how good Heroes Rising is, along with just how strong of a series My Hero Academia really is, because it’s just that. And we have a good bit of stuff from Sentai to give our approval over, maybe save for one choice selection, along with some business talk from both Netflix and Crunchyroll, the latest effects of this whole COVID-19 (coronavirus) ordeal, some curious questions as to what’s going on with Gainax, and a few more discussions before we just sit back and let Andrew go hog wild over MHA: Heroes Rising. Which is good, if you can’t already tell. Go see if however you can. And then come back to listen to us talk about it, which is now available on Spotify and iHeartRadio! That’s right, on this behemoth of an episode we’re giving you guys a full rundown of this year’s Anime Expo - an over four hour-long podcast to discuss over four days of events and activities!  Joining me to go over all this goodness is VLordGTZ, co-host of Manga Mavericks @ Movies and editorial writer for All-Comic and Toonami Faithful, and the Shonen Sunday guru himself, Sakaki, webmaster of the Weekly Shonen Sunday talkback blog and twitter. At least, you’ll get to hear Sakaki about half an hour in - there was, unfortunately, a mishap where his audio wasn’t recording for the first hour of our conversation, so we had to trim down some of our earlier discussion points. First he enlists the help of Shonen Sunday enthusiast, Bomber D. Rufi (@kiirobon), in order to not just tackle whatever news they could at the time, but also cover all of the new one shots now available on the Shonen Jump app and website from well known artists such as Boichi, Yusuke Murata and Yusei Matsui! Join our heroes as they tackle such exciting news stories including the overwhelmingly huge wave of new Boys Love manga that have arrived on the market through futekiya and other publishers, SOZO Comics licensing new series from their humble beginnings to be read on Comixology, as well as the most taxing challenge in all of manga fandom: Kodansha USA licensing new shojo manga when one of them is actually from a shonen magazine!!! (Disclaimer: Labels don't actually matter, but this is also the internet we're talking about) After Colton and Bomber exhaust themselves with the news, Colton summons his faithful friends, co-host LumRanmaYasha and Maxy Barnard from Friendship Effort Victory, to tackle not just the latest Black Clover and We Never Learn popularity polls, but what also might be some of the most controversial new series to come out of Manga Plus: Hina Change and Dear Sa-chan! On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton has a lot of news and manga to cover, but with the help of his conveniently newfound podcast hosting powers, he won't have to go at it alone! This week we’re joined by the one and only Shonen Sunday stan Sakaki and all-around manga enthusiast Maxy Barnard to discuss Viz Media’s latest Sunday license - Sleepy Princess in the Demon’s Castle by Kagiji Kumanomata! Well, it was intended to be a discussion about Sleepy Princess, but with both Bomber and Maxy on board it ended up being more of a follow-up to our Shonen Sunday discussion from last year. Could this episode be the unofficial pilot of a Shonen Sunday podcast by those two? I’m not sure, but once you finish listening to the episode you’ll definitely want it to be! We discuss what’s unique and charming about this adorable fantasy comedy, and why it’s such a fun fit for both Shonen Sunday and as a new license for Viz Media. I’m not even going to bother with timecodes for this episode because it’s so all over the place, so you better listen through it beginning to end. Trust me - you’ll laugh and learn a lot! Oh, and fun fact, we recorded this podcast on a Sunday and we’re releasing it on a Sunday! It’s only fitting that we hit our 50th episode during the same year we’re celebrating Weekly Shonen Jump’s 50th anniversary. Maybe we’ll eventually run fifty years ourselves. Hey, we’ve got two years down already, what’s another forty-eight? Regardless, we want to thank all you listeners for helping us reach this far! Your listenership and support makes doing this show all the more fun and fulfilling for us to do, and we want to keep going for a long while yet. To celebrate our 50th episode milestone, we wanted to revisit a series we’ve previously discussed on the show. So we decided to go back to class - Assassination Classroom that is! Turns out Colton never quite graduated from the series back when we first talked about it, so now that Viz Media’s release of the manga has concluded, we decided it was time to go back and finish it. Joining us is our guest from our original Yusei Matsui retrospective, Kiirobon, best known for his Shonen Sunday blog but also an avid Matsui fan in his own right! Together we discuss the trials and triumphs, the laughs and cries, the anything and everything of Yusei Matsui’s hit series about an unkillable octopus-monster teacher and his 28 would-be middle-school student assassins! But of course, we’ve got to talk about the news first! We discuss a slew of new One Piece spinoffs, the expiring licenses of several high-profile anime, and cool convention news! Plus, we talk about the latest Bookscan and discuss controversial topics like Viz Media dropping the Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Arc and the repercussions faced by the New Life+ light novel author for his racist twitter comments! With as much as we had to talk about, we surprisingly manage to cover it all in only an hour! Which is good considering our Assassination Classroom episode managed to be over three hours long! For this episode of Manga Mavericks, the part of Sid will played by both Maxy Barnard and Bomber D Rufi, as Sid had this thing called “school” to focus on until he is finally finished with that and is ready to get back to slaving away at all the unfinished podcasts he still has to edit. Anyway, while Sid is off on his own ventures, Colton takes care of the show this week and covers the news with the help of Shonen Sunday fanatic, Bomber D Rufi (@kiirobon), as they talk about the usual new upcoming manga serials, licenses and live action films! Some highlights include a list of the biggest first printings from the biggest manga publishers within the last year, Viz Media licensing of Dragon Ball: That Time I Was Reincarnated as Yamcha, as well as some new info about Hiro Mashima’s upcoming new series! Afterwards, Maxy Barnard (@MaxyTheBee) from Friendship! Effort! Victory!, joins the show to discuss and dissect Takamagahara from Jyuuzou Kawai. Another prematurely ending Shonen Jump manga that ran simultaneously in English and Japanese via Viz Media before the era of Jump Starts! Colton and Maxy discuss how they feel about the series in relation to its many unexplored ideas and themes that were shadowed by both some less than stellar storytelling and various production issues behind the scenes. Next episode, we’ll be discussing our thoughts on Viz’s latest round of Jump Starts, as well two recent one shots from both Hiroshi Shiibashi (Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan) and Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro (Toriko). Sid’s Note: As of this post I am hopefully finished with the bulk of my academic obligations. I had hoped to never miss an episode, but alas it was an unavoidable inevitability considering my workload this semester. Sadly, the last few weeks have been highly traumatic and stressful, but hopefully this ordeal is all over with and I can return to the podcast unburdened. I must extend a huge thanks to the wonderful Maxy Barnard and Bomber D Rufi for covering for me this week. They are always a delight to listen to, and I’m looking forward to personally talking with them again in future shows. I’m also very grateful to Colton for creating this week’s thumbnail and writing up this post and the podcast breakdown, tasks I normally do but simply did not have time for this week. You guys are great friends and I’m very thankful this podcast has allowed me to meet all of you. I’m looking forward to continuing doing more projects with you all! The podcast really grew this year as we tackled excellent topics like “The Future of Shonen Jump” and “The State of Shonen Sunday,” and we had guests from the manga industry on like Annaliese Christman and Jeff Ruberg. Manga Mavericks @ Movies debuted this year giving us a fun outlet to talk about movies with friends like Ethan and Jonathan, the latter of which also joining us for my favorite project we did this year – The Pokemon Adventures retrospectives. Not to mention we launched our Youtube channel early in the year, which finally surpassed the 100 subscriber threshold in November and continues to grow. It’s really incredible just how much we accomplished with the show this year even with our short hiatus, and we think 2018 is going to be an even better year for us. We have lots of ideas and topics for the show set and scheduled, as well as exciting projects we can’t wait to start working on. So there’s a lot to look forward to in 2018! Hey, I technically got this up on Sunday, right? Ah, I suppose it doesn't matter if you're not listening to this episode on the day it was posted anyway. Sorry for the delay, but the rough audio for this episode was over four hours long and I had to edit it instead of Colton. But hopefully because this is such a long - and stuffed - episode it was well worth the wait! That's right, our long awaited Weekly Shonen Sunday episode is finally here! We're joined by returning guest and good friends Bomber D Rufi, who recently started a blog dedicated to recapping each new issue of the oft underappreciated magazine. We cover several of Sunday's current hits and other underlooked gems in the lineup, as well as some of the most notable mangaka working for the imprint! To top it off, we answer two of the most pressing questions when it comes to Shonen Sunday: why is it so unpopular compared to Shonen Jump, and why the hell was Keijo!!!!!!!! even a thing?!!!!!!!! But that's not all! We've got our regular news coverage to go over, running down series that have ended or are ending soon and some exciting new licenses courtesy of Kodansha USA. Plus, we discuss the latest two Jump Starts, Demon Prince Poro's Diaries and Hungry Marie! Do these two new comedies bring some fresh humor to Jump's lineup, or are their jokes as stale and stagnant as Keijo!!!!!!!!'s sales? The History of Square Enix - Part 7: Game Making Machine!

This week, we discuss the early days of our favorite game publisher/developer Square! And Enix. Enjoy!! The History of Square-Enix - Part VII: Game-Making Machine 7 Last time we talked about how Square Co. become an almost exclusive Playstation game publishing company. By 1998 they had a multi-game publishing deal with Sony, and with the success of Final Fantasy VII things were looking up for the now very profitable gaming company. Enix, although keep in mind they were a publishing-only company and made no games in-house, weren’t nearly as successful in the mid-to-late 90’s as Square Co. was. However, games weren’t the only thing Enix was selling. Since 1991, likely due to Enix’s relationship with Akira Toriyama (the artist behind Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball), Enix began publishing a weekly Manga magazine to compete with Shonen Magazine, Shonen Jump, and Shonen Sunday. Enix’s magazine would be called “Monthly Shonen Gangan” (by the way, “shonen” means a type of magazine aimed at young men and boys). It was so successful that they published another fantasy-only magazine in 1993 called “Monthly GFantasy”. Both of these monthly Manga Publications have been selling successfully all the way up to now around Japan. You may recognize some of these names: Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Star Ocean and other spin-off manga has been published through these magazines for series later including Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. In 1991 Enix also and a couple of other gaming companies in Japan helped fund the Digital Entertainment Academy Co., which is a school for game development. Speaking of games… The first game Enix published for the Playstation? “Bust a Groove” from 1998. It was a rhythm game developed by the now-defunct “Metro Graphics”. It was enough of a success a sequel in 2000 (Bust a Groove 2), and a more obscure third game on the PS2 called “Dance Summit 2001”, which even wikipedia didn’t even know existed. Following up the successful “Star Ocean” from 1996, Enix released “Star Ocean: The Second Story”, which was the first in the sci-fi/fantasy series released outside of Japan, and proved to be a pretty successful game with 1.09 Million copies sold worldwide. Although we listed the games on a previous episode, I’ll reiterate once again that Enix did experiment with publishing a couple games on both the N64 and the Sega Saturn, but middling sales from both of those systems is what probably led Enix to publish exclusively on the playstation after 1996. Square Co. during this era was pumping out games like crazy in comparison to Enix. Although it didn’t make the game, Square did publish the famous, and ahead-of-its-time, fighting game called Bushido Blade in 1997, created by “Light Weight” Studios (to be fair, they would also end up making the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon game which is neither famous or any good). Bushido Blade would be considered one of the greatest games of all time by many publications, and sell moderately well for a 1997 title with 388,000 copies sold in Japan. Also in 1997, Square Co. would re-release Final Fantasy IV on the Playstation, release 2 games that I couldn’t find any info on, “Power Stakes” and “Digical League”, and publish the sequel to their first Playstation game, Tobal 2. ...And then they decided to shake up the Final Fantasy series with “Final Fantasy Tactics”. Written and Directed by Yasumi Matsuno (the director who stepped down in the middle of FF12), with gameplay designed by Hiroyuki Ito (we have an episode on him btw), Tactics would be one of the strangest departures from the Final Fantasy series, yet one of the most successful and beloved with over 2.4 million copies worldwide, almost all of which went to snobby hipsters who keep reminding people that FF7 is not the best FF game, but their super-rare-totally-not-Final-Fantasy Final Fantasy is. I kid, I’ve never played it, so I don’t know yet. Square would continue 1997 with another addition to the Saga series with “Saga Frontier”, a moderate critical success that sold just over a million copies. A very critically successful sequel to “Front Mission”, “Front Mission 2” would sell a moderate 500,000 copies and be considered one of the best Playstation games. And you’ll forgive me for rushing through the rest of 1997, where we had an “International Version” of FF7 (whatever that means), a little-known game called “Power Stakes Grade 1”, the disappointingly unsuccessful side-scroller 16 bit-like retro-shooter “Einhander”, the forgetful “Front Mission Alternative”, and “Chocobo no Fushigi na Dungeon”, which no, we’re not playing. Final Fantasy VII must have lit a fire under Square’s ass or something, because they would make and publish even more games in 1998, many of which are classics. They would start the year mildly, publishing a little game called “Super Live Stadium”, but would make gaming history in February with the release of “Xenogears”. Praised for its complex psychological plot, and interesting use of anime-style artwork, Xenogears was actually one of the early pitches for the plot for Final Fantasy VII and eventually became it’s own game. It sold over 1 million copies and fans have begged for a sequel ever since. Not to be missed, “Bushido Blade 2” would follow, along with a Playstation port of FF5 in Japan, the unknown-to-wikipedia games “Hai-Shin 2” and “Power Stakes 2”. Now here comes another mega-game… ...Based on the popular horror book (gotta be one of the first games based on a popular modern book, right?), the survival-horror RPG game “Parasite Eve” would make quite the splash as a serious and cinematic game, praised for its storytelling, and selling almost 2 Million copies to date. Not all things can be hits though, the critically-panned Sokaigi would follow, as well as some other not-too-noteworthy games like FF7’s Windows port, Brave Fencer Musashi (forgotten, but it sold ok), “Another Mind”, which is supposed to be really bizzarre game with still photos of actors and shit in a horror game…., yeah…., “Ehrgeize”, the apparently mediocre fighting game which is most notable for its inclusion of FF7 characters, “Chocobo Dungeon 2”, and “iS - Internal Section” which is a “tube shooter” game, like space invaders. With the classics released in 1997 and 1998, Enix was doing pretty wall, but Square Co. was creating a fucking lagacy. And that legacy would only become more solidified in February 1999 with Final Fantasy VIII.   THE REMIX: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoPLHBhCRqQ

Why I'm Thinking About Dumping Otaku USA

You know, I was sitting here reading the August issue of Otaku USA, and as I was reading it, I found myself skipping lots of pages, including the anime and manga reviews. Ironically, this was the section I used to read with the greatest interest. And I began to wonder if Otaku USA is even worth buying anymore. For a while now, I have become less and less enthused with the magazine, even though I have bought every issue since it began. Maybe I'm just bored with it? But why? One of the problems with the magazine is that there seems to be very little reporting going on. It's just reviews and opinions with very little data about the anime or manga they're doing an article on. I like the Protoculture Addicts style more, where they give a summary of the show and then all kinds of breakdowns and graphics on the main chracters and episode guides. For example, say you're doing a feature on Fullmetal Alchemist, show pictures of all the main players with captions about them. Even Anime Insider did stuff like this. It's sad but I'm even beginning to miss the visual overload of Newtype. So, I mean, keep the opinions, but also have just as much emphasis on actual information about the show as well. Another thing that bothers me about Otaku USA is the fact that it seems like a "dubbed" magazine, in that most of the writers are writing their features from a second-hand point of view. There are very few interviews with the original manga creators or anime staff so again you're writing in circles and just having the viewer or reader's side represented in the magazine. It's kinda like when I used to watch an ADV anime dvd and they would have a commentary track with the dub actors. What could the English voice actors possibly know about the original intentions of the Japanese actors, directors, and staff? So it ends up being an interpretation within an interpretation and I'm not interested in that. If you look at the cover of the August issue of Otaku USA you will find that none of the shows it lists are unreleased. Newtype would have had this cover on their magazine probably in January of this year instead of August. It's completely out of date. I used to read the anime magazines to look AHEAD, instead of reading articles about what is already out. I remember looking at pictures and reading about shows in Newtype that were sometimes years away from being released here. Now, as more and more anime and manga companies are going straight to the internet, sometimes days after their release in Japan, Otaku USA is going to have to figure out a way to get ahead of the curve with looks at shows that haven't already been released for months by the time the next issue comes out. And where is the reporting? I have yet to see the definitive breakdown of what the hell happened at ADV and Geneon. It probably has to do with the fact that there are no "professional" anime or manga reporters. We're all just amateurs really. But you know if I had connections in the anime world, I'd want to find out the truth of what happened to the anime market, like a Bob Woodward. How did the anime company that truly originated the US market completely collapse? And you know what, I'd make it the cover story of an issue of Otaku USA. And can you believe there is no mention at all of the media blitz put on by Viz last month with Shonen Sunday, Ikki, and their Haikasoru sci-fi line? Not one line. Silence on what could be one of the most important developments of the past couple of years. I would also like to hear the story of how Funimation singlehandedly saved the US market for anime fans. They truly did. And no opinions or mention of the coming One Piece locust manga infestation. Anime News Network seems to be the true source of what is going on in the anime and manga world. I find out more about what's going on there in one day than in all of the issues of Otaku USA put together. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the mag is falling behind the curve and I'm thinking about not picking up the next issue. Trust me, I'm probably not the only one. I'm all for opinion, but I don't expect people to pay for mine.  If this magazine doesn't change, I don't see it surviving. And PLEASE take the word CHEAP off your cover. It's got all sorts of unseemly connotations.
