Do you like Twin Peaks? Then you'll be utterly confused by Wild Palms almost as confused as SNL alum James Belushi who apparently didn't understand the script so just showed up on set and read his lines. Can't blame you, Jim. This is an indecipherable piece of nonsense. So the story is that ABC wanted to have another weird show to replace Twin Peaks after they ruined that show with studio meddling. They came up with this miniseries about a guy who is looking for the lost kid of his ex-lover and also has nightmares about rhinos and Robert Loggia squealing like a pig. There's also virtual reality where a shitty sitcom can beam to your couch. It's produced by Oliver Stone (who makes a cameo), it takes place in the future (watch for subtle hints because they do nothing with the fact that it's in the future), and it's a big old mess. While I doubt we'll watch any other episodes to see how this story pans out, we watched the 90 minute pilot which is available on YouTube and try to make sense of it. Stay tuned for next week to answer the ultimate question, will Ben get a boner from Mary Gross? Enjoy!Full archive of all podcast episodes available at saturdaynightjive.blogspot.comEmail us anything at saturdaynightjivepodcast@gmail.comDownload Here

Thirty years ago we saw the release of this mystery thriller featuring three promising stars (Alec Baldwin, Nicole Kidman, Bill Pullman), co-written by two promising screenwriters (Aaron Sorkin, Scott Frank), and helmed by one accomplished director (Harold Becker - Sea of Love, Taps). And THE one scene which most people remember from it happens to feature one of the stars referring to himself/herself as God....guess who that was? :) The plot revolves around a sleepy New England school for young women where students are getting murdered but wait there's more! Also co-starring Bebe Neuwirth, George C. Scott, Tobin Bell, and Anne Bancroft.....it's time to revisit one of THE nuttier thrillers of the '90's! Adult Swim's animated sitcom Teenage Euthanasia is back for season 2. Set in a futuristic Florida, the Fantasy family is back at it with comedy and unbearable suffering. The show's cast includes Cheer's alum Bebe Neuwirth. Final Draft sat down with the show's co-creators Alissa Nutting and Alyson Levy - a rare female animation duo in a male dominated industry - to hear about what it's like to work together, come up with ideas and write this hit show. Teenage Euthanasia's final season premieres September 27 on Adult Swim. Listen to our podcast here.
Katie and Bridget spread alien conspiracy theories as they re-watch the movie: The Faculty! It's a movie featuring every actor ever (for real) in a sci-fi version of The Breakfast Club! Come along as we watch high schoolers try to survive a parasitic alien invasion that takes down the school's faculty. The aliens also may or may not be contributing to our planet's water crisis as a result - but we digress. Meet our angsty teens: Casey, a pre-Frodo who really needed Sam with him; Stokely, a lesbian who's not a lesbian but maybe should just be a lesbian - ya know?; Delilah, a bully/head cheerleader/newspaper editor/girlfriend/ex-girlfriend/way too many other things; Stan, a sad athlete who kind of just gets treated like crap by everyone; Zeke, a guy who needs a new haircut and a new name; and Marybeth, the new girl/obvious alien queen! Will the teens defeat the aliens with the power of 90's drugs? Does someone's head get ripped off and turn into tentacles!? Released in 1998, this movie features a star studded cast including: Elijah Wood, Clea DuVall, Jordana Brewster, Josh Hartnett, Piper Laurie, Salma Hayek, Famke Janssen, Christopher McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Robert Patrick, Usher (NO REALLY!), and Jon Stewart.
Tune in as return guest Dustin Holden (Dustin Can Read & Watch, The Rewatch Recap) hops back onto the podcast to cover How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, the 2003 Kate Hudson/Matthew McConaughey rom-com that's full of deception, Knicks games, and insufferable baby talk. Movie theater etiquette, a debate about Matthew McConaughey's hotness, and whether or not this rom-com needs a reboot make up a few of the subjects that Arthur and Dustin chat about here. Directed by Donald Petrie, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days stars Kate Hudson, Matthew McConaughey, Kathryn Hahn, Annie Parisse, Adam Goldberg, Thomas Lennon, Michael Michele, Shalom Harlow, Robert Klein, Bebe Neuwirth, Celia Weston, James Murtaugh, Liliane Montevecchi, and Marvin Hamlisch. A former runaway teen mom is accidentally resurrected in her family's funeral home, giving her a second chance to raise her now-teenage daughter. This is the unusual plot behind Adult Swim's series, Teenage Euthanasia. Alyson Levy and Alissa Nutting, the creators of the series, describe themselves as “late bloomers.” Both had roundabout paths in the business, exploring comedy and animation, until they had an opportunity to pitch the idea for this series. “This is the first show I've really owned the writing,” says Levy, “after working on ten series or so, leading up to this.” The series stars voice talents such as Jo Firestone, Maria Bamford, Tim Robinson, and Bebe Neuwirth. This show in particular was one that had to adapt during the pandemic. “It allows diversity in the room. Being able to have someone who is in London and someone in Boise and someone in New York — as long as everyone can agree on time. These things are now possible,” says Nutting. In an effort to create one of the first animated series made by women and do so during the pandemic, one goal for the show was to shine a light on unique voices in the industry. “It's really hard to break through as an outsider,” says Levy. “It's hard to be a weirdo. It's harder to be a woman weirdo or a queer woman weirdo. Weirdo is a small lane, but there's a community of weirdos. It's about becoming part of that and connecting with others. I feel like us making a second season, we cleared that bar that very few women have cleared.” Want more? Steal my first book, Ink by the Barrel - Secrets From Prolific Writers right now for free. A special episode today, as Ben Blacker chats with the creators of Cheers: Glen Charles, Les Charles, and James Burrows. They discuss the TV comedy landscape in 1982 and now, who at NBC didn't get the show, Taxi, Phyllis, discovering the cast's special talents, the pressure following Shelley Long's departure, and lots more. Before that interview, though, an excerpt from Ted Danson and His Friends From Work, a live streaming special that Blacker produced in 2020. The show featured cast reunions of Ted Danson's shows and movies, from Three Men and a Baby to The Good Place, and ended in a 45 minute Cheers reunion, featuring the Charles brothers, Burrows, Danson, Rhea Perlman, Woody Harrelson, Kelsey Grammer, Kirstie Alley, John Ratzenberger, Bebe Neuwirth, and George Wendt, as well as a fan-question from Tina Fey!And before THAT, a short but important conversation with Adam Conover (Adam Ruins Everything), who is a WGA Board Member and is on the contract negotiating committee about who forms the WGA's strategy, what sympathetic execs can do to help (without getting fired), how pre-WGA writers can pitch in, and what gives him hope that the WGA will win this fight,By the way! Les Charles wants you to know that the name of the episode that he couldn't recall in the conversation is "Old Flames," which is episode 7 of season 2 and was written by the late, wonderful David Angell.THE WRITERS PANEL IS NOW A COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT PRODUCTION.Follow and support the show by subscribing to Ben Blacker's newsletter, where you'll also get weekly advice from the thousands of writers he's interviewed over the years, as well as access to exclusive live Q&As, meet-ups, and more: https://benblacker.substack.comSOCIALS: twitter.com/BenBlackerfacebook.com/tvWritersPanel Hosted on Acast. Actor, dancer, and Broadway legend Bebe Neuwirth (Chicago, Cheers, Julia) joins the podcast! Brooke and Bebe swap stories about their very different Princeton days and dig into Bebe's early years on Broadway — including her work with Bob Fosse and the time she lied in an open call (and still got the part!). Bebe shares what it was like to end her first marriage and opens up about the pressure of dancing on Broadway after having two hip replacements.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We followed Bebe Neuwirth to Star Trek: The Next Generation "First Contact" (S4:E15) and we wrangled "trekspert" Brooks Peck onto the show! In this episode, we are asked to join the federation of Trekkies and we decline. (not really, they didn't want us)
Host Meg Wolitzer presents stories chosen by On the Media's Brooke Gladstone. Gladstone was our guest for a live Selected Shorts event in which all the stories explore the theme of tales we tell ourselves—and others. The title says it all in Mary Gordon's “My Podiatrist Tells Me a Story about a Boy and a Dog” read by Bebe Neuwirth and Richard Masur. Two imaginative cooks reinvent themselves in a new country in Meron Hadero's “A Down Home Meal for These Difficult Times” read by Chinasa Ogbuagu. And a child imagines an absent parent through her postcards in “Love, Your Only Mother” by David Michael Kaplan, read by Bebe Neuwirth. In addition to Gladstone's on-stage remarks, this episode features backstage interviews with actors Masur, Neuwirth and Ogbuagu.
Wesley Taylor (one of this podcast's earliest guests!) is a multi-talented artist who's taking the entertainment industry by storm and has recently debuted as a writer AND director in his new movie, “Summoning Sylvia”. Wesley talks about creating "Summoning Sylvia" with his friend, Alex Wyse, how the idea for it started, the casting process, and making sure it's not just another typical gay movie. Working alongside Meryl Streep in the hit Hulu series "Only Murders in the Building" is a dream come true for Wesley. He shares the difference between working with actors with theatre experience versus people who've only done tv and films, and why he prefers to disassociate during set. Wesley reflects on his early days as a writer, learning to take himself seriously, and finding Alex which, to him, felt like finding his other half in terms of creativity. Having been in the industry for years, he shares some tips to keep getting interested and inspired, such as asking favors, strategically acquiring what you need to acquire, looking at auditions as an opportunity to show off, and getting motivated by laughter. Wesley Taylor is an actor who has won a Theatre World Award and Chita Rivera Award and was an Outer Critics Circle nominee. He made his Broadway debut in the original cast of “Rock of Ages” before starring opposite Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth in the original cast of Broadway's “The Addams Family”. He also originated the role of Sheldon J. Plankton in “Spongebob Squarepants” before it was filmed for Nickelodeon as “The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage!”. Wesley's additional tv and film credits include “The Good Wife”, “The Tomorrow People”, and “Smash”. He co-created and starred in three original digital series, including the latest Emmy-nominated “Indoor Boys” with Alex Wyse. He will also appear in the 3rd season of “Only Murders in the Building” with Alex. Recently, he and Alex made their feature film debut as writers and directors in “Summoning Sylvia”, a new movie out now for a limited theatrical release and now available to stream. There's something funny about this one. Star Trek always focuses on the bridge crew of the Enterprise, according to Mean Gene Roddenberry, but the producers successfully switched up the POV to the Malkorians. The cultural bridge crew of Re:Engage also gets some new POVs as Geoffrey Zatkin (@GeoffreyZatkin on Twitter) and Matthew Krol (@EmperorMSK on Twitter) from the YouTube channels Extra Credits and Extra History join to dish on Riker's lies. There was a lot to unpack - including amazing guest star Bebe Neuwirth from Cheers and Chicago fame, a bona fide Not Ready for Primetime Player as the chancellor, and everyone's favorite hotel administrator from Ghostbusters as a conservative Malkorian. Click click click! Heat that sound?!? It can only be one thing: the ominous, predator clicking of the Yautja. What's a Yautja, you ask? It's the fancy name for the deadly alien species known to moviegoers as the Predator! Yeah, you probably thought you were cool for knowing the term Xenomorph, didn't you? Well now the Yautja has come to let you know your pop culture vocabulary isn't QUITE as good as you thought it was. Anyhoo, Dan cooked up some VERY silly ideas for ways in which Predators could end up in other pop culture properties, then Dave (no, not that Dave), Jess, and Nick had a good time coming up with their very silly titles. Round two is an audio extravaganza that looks at the vanity cartoon projects of several celebrities over the years, in case you were worried that that Predator game wasn't dumb enough. Also, there's a lightning round, as though that would surprise any of you. NOTES ⚠️ Inline notes below may be truncated due to podcast feed character limits. About Michael: Michael Kostroff is an established TV and stage actor best known for his role as unscrupulous gang attorney Maury Levy on HBO's legendary series, The Wire. In addition to his many television gigs, he's toured with The Producers and Les Misérables, appeared on regional stages all across the country, served as an advice columnist for Backstage, created the popular workshop "Audition Psych 101" (which focuses on the psychological side of auditioning), and written four books, including his recently published manual, The Stage Actor's Handbook: Traditions, Protocols, and Etiquette for the Working and Aspiring Professional. The gospel of low expectations. My philosophy is very different from the popular philosophies—no one's entitled to a career. If you decide this is what you want to do, then you're signing on for the unemployment, the insecurity, the inconsistency, and you don't get to complain about it. Yeah, I love being an actor, but it's not dependent on credits or being employed. It's who I am and what I've chosen to do with my life. So sign on for the whole thing. Not just the days when you work. Remind yourself that this is a job, and you are being paid to do it, so you need to show up and do it. The reason that the psychology of auditioning is my specialty is because I was miserable at it. I hated every moment of it. I was terrible at it, and I was all in my head about stuff. And I had to pick it apart to get to the place where I am now, which is I enjoy it. Most auditions do not result in jobs. That's math. It's not because we suck. It's just applying mathematics. And I realized that I was putting all my energy and focus into figuring out how to get a job. And when I realized that is not going to happen 99% of the time, there has to be another reason to go to an audition. And now, I relish the opportunity to be an actor and play a role. And I have a much better time auditioning. And as soon as I said, You're not getting the fucking job; I started to go, Oh, okay. Well, then, I'm going to make the choices I would make if I had the role because I'm only going to do it for one performance. Let's. Let's invest in it. Let's make the decisions. Let's do all the choices. Let's do it my way. Because I can't guess what they're going to like or not like. I think self-knowledge is essential for actors. Because I really know myself. Thank you. Thank you. I'm able to morph into these other characters from it, from a place that's truthful and neutral. I think that to really play those roles well. You know, you have to make a case for your character. You need to be the best advocate for your character. That is sometimes difficult because sometimes the person who we have the hardest time advocating for is ourselves. I really want actors to step into their authority as actors. Trying to predict what people will respond to is the enemy of good acting. Just going, "I don't know if they're going to pick me. Probably they won't. But here's how I'd like to play this scene today." It's hard for us to believe in our own work. I think that's very challenging. It is more effective for me not to think in terms of whether I am a good actor or not a good actor. Instead, I've got stuff to do in this scene. Get yourself so busy with the thoughts of the character and the objectives of the character. I always say when I'm in the scene; there's nobody else who can do it. I'm the only one who can convince these people that my wife is trying to kill me. My mantra is you're not getting the fucking job. Trying to get the job is not conducive to getting a job because nobody wants to watch an actor try to get a job. You're not getting the fucking job. There's no fucking job. Now, convince these people that your wife is trying to kill you. That's what you got to do. You do your prep, and then you've got to throw the Frisbee. You got to let it go. And that's scary. That's risky because you're your ego wants to control it. My best days are the days when I'm the passenger; I'm the copilot. I'm here to show up and to be of service on this day.
