We need to be honest about our nation's history - that we've always been a divided nation - if we're going to be able to strengthen and maximize the full power and potential of our nation. What's that nation we want to move towards? One dedicated to the proposition of equality. That's the clear, fresh vision that our guest today, Steve Phillips, writes about in his recent article in The Nation - an article that put in writing what we'd been thinking about - which is to say this: We're pretty tired of the barrage of viewpoints standing AGAINST what the Trump administration is doing to our country - the authoritarianism, the oppression, the broligarchy. We believe it is much more powerful to round out those views to include not just what we don't want, but importantly, what we are fighting for, and what we are aspiring to be. The proposition of equality. Of well-being for all. What to listen for: Recognizing the different nations within our country (i.e. facing our history) so we can articulate what we stand for and fight for what we want to see The fully thought-out case for why the Civil War never really ended - with excellent examples from history That we need to focus on the long game - by investing in level 5 leaders, building strong civic engagement organizations, developing detailed data-driven plans, and playing the long game About Steve: Steve Phillips is a national political leader, bestselling author, and columnist. He is the author of The New York Times bestseller Brown Is the New White: How the Demographic Revolution Has Created a New American Majority and the national bestselling book How We Win the Civil War: Securing a Multiracial Democracy and Ending White Supremacy for Good. He is a columnist for The Guardian and The Nation. He is also the host of “Democracy in Color with Steve Phillips,” a color-conscious podcast on politics. He is the founder of Democracy in Color, a political media organization dedicated to race, politics and the multicultural progressive New American Majority.

In this episode of Momentum: A Race Forward Podcast, Glenn Harris, President of Race Forward, and Eric Ward, Executive Vice President, reflect on the state of racial justice just one week after the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States. With only seven days of executive orders and surprising political developments, the federal government is already undergoing fundamental changes that threaten hard-won racial justice gains. Glenn and Eric emphasize the urgency of resilience and strategy in navigating these turbulent times, situating the challenges ahead within a broader historical context and calling for purposeful, unified action. The episode delves into the systemic impacts of Trump's executive orders and policies, which aim to destabilize vulnerable communities and erode democratic principles. Drawing on their own experiences in organizing and coalition building, Glenn and Eric discuss strategies that can fortify both local and national movements. They stress the importance of proactive engagement and collective power to disrupt regressive policies, even when the odds may feel overwhelming. Glenn and Eric also address the emotional and practical challenges faced by those committed to racial justice work. Acknowledging the fear and uncertainty many feel, they encourage listeners to channel those emotions into strategic preparation and advocacy. They spotlight several resources from Race Forward, including the organization's Strategic Plan, the report From Project 2025 to Project 2029: How We Resist an Authoritarian Takeover and Turn Public Administration into a Force for Equity and Justice, and the H.E.A.L. Together (Honest Education Action & Leadership) initiative. Josh Stein vs. Mark Robinson: The Fight for Rights in North Carolina's Upcoming Elections. In-depth analysis of North Carolina's political landscape reveals increasing threats to democracy and individual freedoms, with exclusive interviews by Laura including Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein and activists on the frontline. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: North Carolina is a battleground state, and a petri dish for extremist policy and practice. Whether it's the right to vote, the right to read, or the right to decide the fate of one's body, North Carolinians are on the frontlines. The state has banned gender-affirming care for minors; its MAGA Republican gubernatorial candidate is calling for death for LGBTQ people and a total abortion ban. Will Proud Boys show up at polling sites this November to intimidate voters? In this special report, Laura speaks with Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein, and correspondent Lewis Raven Wallace examines the agenda of his Trump-endorsed opponent, Lt. Governor Mark Robinson. Laura also checks in with organizers and activists from past episodes. Among those: Serena Sebring, Executive Director of Blueprint NC; Mab Segrest, Writer, Organizer & Consultant with Blueprint NC; Courtney Patterson, Eastern North Carolina Organizer at Blueprint NC; and LGBTQIA+ youth activist Alex Lafferty. As you'll hear, North Carolina is a microcosm of this country. The question remains: where is the state headed this November and beyond?“There's a lot of people I know, a lot of trans people who want to go on hormones but don't have the ability to. And there are things coming up where they want to ban gender affirming care for not just minors but of any age, which is genocide. You can't destroy an entire community and see that as legal.” - Alex Lafferty“I'm seriously afraid that [Proud Boys] will show up in these polling places . . . They feel empowered right now. They feel that they are above the law, so they will do things, make things, they'll take chances because they feel like they'll get away with it.” - Courtney Patterson“I think we use infrastructure and people in order to meet a threat that ultimately is countered by one thing, and that's massive turnout. The best thing that we can do to protect safety in North Carolina is register and turn out voters at a scale that is historic.” Serena Sebring“In 2024, state capture is possible at the national level because it's been petri dished in these other places like North Carolina . . . If they get it, they can do anything they want to. And so they get more and more extreme, more violent, more dangerous because they're unchecked.” - Mab Segrest“North Carolina really is a bit of a microcosm of this country. We're a 50/50 state, elections swing back and forth. We're on the front lines of a number of critical battles, whether it's people's right to vote or whether it's their right to exercise decisions about their own bodies through reproductive decisions . . . We're really on the front lines about protecting people's freedoms.” - Josh SteinGuests:• Alex Lafferty: Trans Activist, Artist and Composer • Courtney Patterson: Eastern North Carolina Organizer, Blueprint NC• Serena Sebring: Executive Director, Blueprint NC• Mab Segrest: Writer, Organizer & Consultant, Blueprint NC• Josh Stein: Attorney General & Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Full Episode Notes are located HERE. Steve Phillips, Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson, Maurice Mitchell, moderated by Lateefah Simon In 2024, the threat of authoritarianism is greater than ever before. Yet our nation also has the potential to become a genuine multiracial democracy. How can we help tip the scale? Steve Phillips is a national political leader, bestselling author, and columnist. He is the author of The New York Times bestseller Brown Is the New White. His latest book, How We Win the Civil War, charts the way forward for those who wish to build a multiracial democracy and rid our nation of white supremacy once and for all. . He will be in conversation with two veteran political organizers, Ash-Lee Henderson, Co-Executive Director of The Highlander Center, which serves as a catalyst for grassroots organizing and movement building in Appalachia and the South, with a background in fighting for workers, reproductive justice, LGBTQUIA+ folks, environmental justice, and more, and Maurice Mitchell, a visionary leader in the Movement for Black Lives, and National Director of the Working Families Party. Moderated by Lateefah Simon, this urgent conversation is the reframe that many of us have been hungering for, to move us from anxiety to action. These big-picture thinkers can help us leverage our ostensibly limited voting options into a visionary electoral strategy that can change the game.
On this episode of See How They Run, a wide-ranging conversation with Christina Greer, Steve Phillips, and Adolph Reed Jr.If there's one thing everyone knows about American politics, it's that there is no way for a Democrat to win the presidency without Black voters. That's one of the reasons why, as Joe Biden fights desperately to stay in the 2024 election, he's made an aggressive effort to shore up Black support. In recent days, Biden has spoken at Black churches, given interviews to Black radio hosts, and leaned on the powerful Congressional Black Caucus to help bolster his political defenses. But there are signs that Black voters may not be ready to turn out for Biden as fervently as he needs them to. in the past few months, polls have shown Black support for Biden slipping to levels Democrats have not seen in generations. So can Biden overcome doubts about his fitness, reverse these trends, and hold the White House? Should we even believe the polls? And are we in the middle of a historic shift in the relationship between Black voters and the Democratic Party? To discuss all of this, D.D. Guttenplan is joined by a powerhouse trio of guests: Christina Greer, Associate Professor of Political Science at Fordham University; Steve Phillips, political strategist, Nation contributor, and author most recently of How We Win the Civil War: Securing a Multiracial Democracy and Ending White Supremacy for Good; and Adolph Reed Jr., Nation columnist and professor emeritus of political science at the University of Pennsylvania.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Together, Mila and Waj discuss what it means to be American and to love a country that often doesn't love them back. Defense of democracy continues to resonate as a kitchen table issue for all Americans. Mainstream media is not properly serving the public, whether that's about fully informing the public on the Trump indictments, truthfully reporting the reality in Gaza, or neglecting to report on the dangers of Project 2025. Project 2025 is a white Christian nationalist document that openly pushes for ideas such as the weaponization of the DOJ, eliminating the Department of Education, and the continued efforts to ban abortion. Democrats must also remind and inform voters on these issues instead of shaming the public into voting for them. Episode 7: Electoral Strategies with Maurice Mitchell Many progressives are cynical about electoral politics. But our guest today explains why engaging in electoral politics is crucial for building the kind of society we want. Maurice Mitchell is the National Director of the Working Families Party, a savvy, independent political organization that has given progressives greater voice and leverage in cities and states around the country, most notably by taking advantage of fusion voting. Maurice describes his own trajectory, from being a local organizer to a leader in the Movement for Black Lives, who ultimately came to see movements alone as limited without the organizing force that a political party provides. He offers an insightful analysis of our present conjuncture, shaped by a ruthless right committed to minority rule through the courts, decades of neoliberalism, and an information environment that breeds atomization and loneliness. As neoliberalism's legitimacy crumbles, and the post-neoliberal, authoritarian right speaks to popular concerns, Maurice argues that WFP's strategy of winning elections to achieve governing power and engaging everyday people in the work of governance offers a hopeful path forward. Maurice concludes by reflecting on the questions that fill him with the same excitement he had as a young organizer: “What are you building? Who are you choosing to be? And who are you choosing to be with?” Links: Maurice's 2022 highly influential essay “Building Resilient Organizations” is a must-read for everyone in progressive politics. And now, there's a workbook, too. We mentioned Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice, a terrific new training institute at CUNY for early- and mid-career organizers where Maurice has been a regular guest instructor. Maurice's argument about the present conjuncture compliments one made by Shahrzad Shams, Deepak Bhargava, and Harry W. Hanbury in a new report for the Roosevelt Institute: The Cultural Contradictions of Neoliberalism: The Longing for an Alternative Order and the Future of Multiracial Democracy in an Age of Authoritarianism

The conversation between Hopeton Hay and the author revolves around the themes of civil rights, the ongoing struggle for racial equality, and the political tactics that have been used historically to suppress the rights of marginalized communities, particularly African Americans. Thursday, November 2nd, 2023 Hajar Yazdiha is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences and the author of The Struggle for the People's King: How Politics Transforms the Memory of the Civil Rights Movement. We discuss the role of collective memory in the myth-making of American exceptionalism. Collective memory is the way that we remember history and that becomes central to our idea of who we are as a people. It's a process of storytelling and the most central stories to who we are as a people. The civil rights movement has become one of the central collective memories in America's story of both who it is and who it wants to be. However, careful examination of the record reveals that the civil rights movement was a political project that was meant to actually dismantle multicultural democracy. Further, as the collective memory of Dr. King became sanitized and whitewashed, his legacy carried a lot of moral legitimacy, and his moral symbolic authority became ripe for manipulation. On this episode of Momentum: A Race Forward Podcast, Julie Nelson, Senior Vice President of Programs at Race Forward and john a. powell, Director, Othering and Belonging Institute, come together in a conversation inspired by the recent essay they co-authored, “Advancing Just, Multiracial Democracy.” Throughout the conversation, they explore the role local municipalities can play in not only defending against “democratic backsliding,” but also in expanding the very nature of democracy, which is critical with the global rise of authoritarianism and nationalism. Julie and john's work rests on the idea that local governments are uniquely situated to turn grim situations built on “othering” into a global movement grounded in racial justice and belonging. They examine the four principles they wrote about, which includes: 1. expanding democratic practice; 2. being explicit about who is currently included or excluded; 3. systems and structures; and 4. operationalizing and organizing for multiracial democracy. In their forthcoming book, The Tyranny of the Minority, Harvard Professors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt are calling for reforms. Will we save or lose our democracy?
The history of American democracy has always been fraught when it comes to race. Yet no matter how elusive it may be, Harvard Kennedy School professors Khalil Gibran Muhammad and Archon Fung say true multiracial democracy not only remains a worthy goal, but achieving it is critically important to our collective future. From the earliest, formative days of the American political experiment, the creation of laws and political structures was often less about achieving some Platonic ideal of the perfect democratic system than it was about finding tenuous compromises between people and groups who had very different beliefs and agendas when it came to the status of people of other races. Those tensions have been baked into our system ever since, and the history of the movement toward a true multi-racial democracy in the United States has been marked with conflict, progress, reaction, and regression—from the 3/5's Compromise to the Civil War to Jim Crow to the Civil Rights movement and on up to threats to democracy in our present day. Fung is a leading scholar of citizenship and self-governance and the faculty director of the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation. Muhammad is a professor of history, race, and public policy and director of the Institutional Antiracism and Accountability Project. He is also the former director of the New York Public Library's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the world's leading library and archive of global black history. They say that in our increasingly diverse and interconnected country and world, the question isn't whether or not to strive for a multiracial democracy, but, if you don't fully reckon with how race has shaped our system of governance, can you really have democracy at all?Archon Fung is the Winthrop Laflin McCormack Professor of Citizenship and Self-Government at the Harvard Kennedy School. His research explores policies, practices, and institutional designs that deepen the quality of democratic governance. He focuses upon public participation, deliberation, and transparency. He co-directs the Transparency Policy Project and leads democratic governance programs of the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at the Kennedy School. His books include Full Disclosure: The Perils and Promise of Transparency and Empowered Participation: Reinventing Urban Democracy. He has authored five books, four edited collections, and over fifty articles appearing in professional journals. He received two SBs — in philosophy and physics — and his PhD in political science from MIT.Khalil Gibran Muhammad is the Ford Foundation Professor of History, Race and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School. He directs the Institutional Antiracism and Accountability Project and is the former Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a division of the New York Public Library and the world's leading library and archive of global black history. Before leading the Schomburg Center, he was an associate professor at Indiana University. His scholarship examines the broad intersections of racism, economic inequality, criminal justice and democracy in U.S. history. He is co-editor of “Constructing the Carceral State,” a special issue of the Journal of American History, and the award-winning author of The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime, and the Making of Modern Urban America. He is currently co-directing a National Academy of Sciences study on reducing racial inequalities in the criminal justice system. In his new book, Steve Phillips warns that the Confederates never stopped fighting the Civil War, that conservatives are taking full advantage of this reality, and that those in denial imperil our democracy. He charts the way forward in the post-Trump era, arguing that progressives must recognize the true nature of the fight we're in—an existential battle between those who wish to make America a multiracial democracy and those clinging to the concept that this is fundamentally a white nation. We also discuss other topics like Blacks for Trump, how the Democrat party became the home for social justice, CRT, and why people of color weren't surprised to find out that America still has a racism problem. Steve Phillips suspected there would be no “red wave” in November. One of the most astute political thinkers of our time, he showed us, in his book Brown is the New White: How the Demographic Revolution Created a New American Majority, that people of color in combination with progressive whites comprise the majority in this country, a majority that put a Black man in the White House twice. In his new book, How We Win the Civil War: Securing a Multiracial Democracy and Ending White Supremacy Forever, he sheds light on the forces that seek to undermine our democracy, drawing a straight line from the Confederacy to Donald Trump, and illuminates the path forward by highlighting the organizations and individuals whose sustained efforts have transformed the political landscape in Georgia, Arizona, and beyond. In this conversation, Steve shares his core motivation for writing this book, which he describes as a culmination of his life's work up to this point. We also discuss his writing routine, the surprises he uncovered in his research, and the examples, past and present, that inspire him to continue the fight.

Steve Phillips- author of "How we win the Civil War: Securing a Multiracial Democracy and Ending White Supremacy for Good." It is the contention of Phillips that America is still fighting the Civil War - or at least struggling to come to terms with some of the central issues which led to the conflict and still leave us painfully divided.
As America faces another election as a deeply divided country, Steve Phillips has strong views on what the United States needs to do to strengthen its multiracial democracy. For Phillips, understanding why the country is so divided requires recognizing that many of our divisions are historic in nature, resulting in a contest between democracy and white supremacy that is still left unresolved after the Civil War. In his new book, How We Win the Civil War, Phillips pulls no punches on what he thinks the country must do to bridge its divides, particularly around issues related to race. Phillips advocates for increasing voter participation, ending what he says are racist immigration policies, and reviving the Great Society programs of the 1960s—all of them geared toward strengthening a new multiracial democracy and ridding our politics of white supremacy. Join us for a powerful conversation on race, history, politics and finally overcoming our divisions. But her whole strategy is to organize and mobilize people who do NOT vote regularly – to expand the electorate with young people, people of color, and those the political scientists call “low-propensity voters.” She explains in this interview, from April, 2019, after her first campaign for governor.

Author and columnist Steve Phillips joins Daniella to discuss his new book, How We Win the Civil War: Securing a Multiracial Democracy and Ending White Supremacy for Good. They talk about how deeply entrenched white supremacy is in the MAGA ideology, the importance of demography and voter turnout in the upcoming midterms, and ways to fight for a multiracial democracy.
Harvard professor Steven Levitsky, author of How Democracies Die, says, "Our politicians have not yet come to grips with the fact that the house is on fire, that our democracy is directly threatened. And that if we don't behave as if there is a crisis, if we don't step outside of the box of normal politics, we will lose. Or at least, we are at risk of losing our democracy."In order to preserve our democracy in the face of attacks by White Christian nationalists, Rev. Jim Wallis says that we need to build a "multi-faith, multiracial, and multi-generational” movement. With the midterm elections just nine months away, the Democrats face some hefty existential questions that need answers: Who are they in this post- and possibly pre-Trump era of American politics? Are they simply the anti-Trump party? Or are they the party of progress? Who are the voters they need to turn out in November? Should they excite the base by building a coalition united against white supremacy, or should they moderate their message to win over Republican-defectors?This week on “The Argument,” Jane Coaston brings together two voices that represent the factions in the Democratic Party's existential struggle. Lanae Erickson is the senior vice president of social policy, education and politics at the center-left think tank Third Way. She argues that Democrats need to make their platform as broadly popular as possible in order to bring more voters under the party's big tent. That's the way to win, and then enact progressive policies.Steve Phillips disagrees. He's the founder of the political media organization Democracy in Color and author of the book “Brown Is the New White: How the Demographic Revolution Has Created a New American Majority.” He counterargues that the Democrats must run and win as the party united around a vision of a multiracial, just society, unapologetically calling out racism on the other side of the ticket. The two political strategists strongly disagree on what the party needs to do to win in November, but they agree on one thing: Democrats are afraid and need to answer the question of who they are, fast.Mentioned in this episode:“The Argument” episode debating the future of the Republican Party: “Can the G.O.P. The January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol “represented the greatest crisis of our democracy” since South Carolina's secession prior to the Civil War, says historian and author Gunja SenGupta in this wide-ranging discussion of the latest events in Washington, D.C., and their precedent in the 1860s. An expert on the Civil War and slavery, SenGupta is a history professor at The Graduate Center, CUNY and Brooklyn College and the author of two books and a number of book chapters and articles. SenGupta describes the parallels between the events and attitudes that triggered the Civil War and the racism and dissention that came to a head on January 6th. She discusses America's halting path to forging a multiracial democracy, which, she says, began only after the Civil War ended. William Faulkner famously said, “The past is never dead. It's not even past.” SenGupta explains why we're living with it and what we can learn from it.

Tim Wise is one of the United States' and the world's leading antiracism activists and authors. His books include Dear White America, White Like Me, Speaking Treason Fluently, and Under the Affluence. His new book is Dispatches from the Race War. Tim Wise reflects on the recent passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and how her death has now made America's multiracial democracy even more imperiled by the Age of Trump and his white neofascist movement. He also shares how the Trump regime's move to immediately replace Ginsburg with a white neofascist is but another example of the toxic power of white racism in America and its profoundly negative impact on society as a whole. And Tim Wise counsels that yes, the loss of Justice Ginsburg should upset and terrify all good people of conscience in America but that now is not the time to surrender to defeatism but rather to rally and fight back. Chauncey DeVega calls out the hope peddlers and others of their ilk in the mainstream American news media and political class who are circulating the lie that there are “good” and “principled” Republicans such as Mitt Romney that will somehow swoop in to stop Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump from replacing Ruth Bader Ginsburg with their own henchwoman.
