Federal transportation officials say last year's collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore was an accident waiting to happen. AP correspondent Donna Warder reports.
Fort McHenry sits in Baltimore's harbor and is probably best known as the site where America's National Anthem was penned during the War of 1812. The Battle of Baltimore was fought here with a relentless attack bearing down on the fort from the British. The assault was so harrowing, it's understandable how Francis Scott Key was inspired to write his poem. Today, spirits still linger from that era. Join us for the history and hauntings of Fort McHenry. The Moment in Oddity features Veronica Lake's War Factory Hairstyle and This Month in History features Baby Lindbergh's kidnapping and murder. Over the last few weeks, we've brought you several episodes from our experts here at Lloyd's List briefing you on what to expect in each respective sector in 2025. Insurance editor David Osler is rounding that series off with a look at what the marine insurance market can expect over the next 12 months. The sector was thrust into the limelight in March last year, when containership Dali allided with the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore, which tragically resulted in the deaths of six construction workers. That casualty could wind up being the costliest in maritime history by the time it's run its course though the US judicial system, and the International Group of P&I clubs is already on the hook for some serious cash. David explains how that case will affect P&I insurance moving forwards, as well as highlighting the extra capacity hitting the hull and machinery market which could drive down prices for shipowners. To listen to the rest of out ‘What to look out for series', head to Soundcloud, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Crimes of the Centuries presents one of Amber's favorite episodes from Season One. Happy holidays everyone! In 1859, two of Washington, D.C.'s highest-profile men were in love with the same woman -- and that love triangle would lead to the broad-daylight shooting of one of them just a stone's throw from the White House. The victim had been the first-born son of Francis Scott Key, author of the lyrics to America's national anthem. And his killer would be the first in the country to argue a defense of temporary insanity. "Crimes of the Centuries" is a podcast from Grab Bag Collab exploring forgotten crimes from times past that made a mark and helped change history. Follow us on Instagram and Twitter: @centuriespod

Our guest on this week's episode is Elizabeth Gallenagh, general counsel and senior VP, Supply Chain Integrity, for the Healthcare Distribution Alliance. Pharmaceutical supply chains have been ramping up for a number of years to meet the requirements of the Drug Supply Chain Security Act, also known as DSCSA. The DSCSA requires the tracking and serializing of all pharmaceutical products. The deadline is set for November, but is the industry ready for it? Our guest shares some insights. It has been six months since the Francis Scott Key highway bridge over Baltimore harbor collapsed when a containership lost power and drifted into the bridge abutment. And now a team of researchers from Johns Hopkins University has completed a study that identifies which bridges across the U.S. may be most vulnerable to another such collapse. They did the work because they believe that chances are high for another such incident, and that risk to the Key Bridge amid modern shipping traffic had been underestimated. Two European companies are among the most recent firms to put autonomous last-mile delivery to the test with a project in Bern, Switzerland. Swiss transportation and logistics company Planzer has teamed up with fellow Swiss firm Loxo, which develops autonomous driving software solutions. They will run a two-year pilot project in which a Loxo-equipped, Planzer parcel delivery van will handle last-mile logistics in Bern's city center.Supply Chain Xchange also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. It is co-produced with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. A series of ten episodes just dropped on the "State of Logistics." It's Wednesday, July 31st, A.D. 2024. This is The World View in 5 Minutes written by Jonathan Clark and heard at www.TheWorldView.com. Filling in for Adam McManus I'm Ean Leppin. U.K. Upholds Ban on Puberty Blockers A High Court judge in the U.K. upheld the country's emergency ban on puberty blockers for children on Monday. Mrs. Justice Lang based her decision on the Cass Review. The study found so-called “gender-affirming care” could actually be harmful for gender-confused children. Lang ruled, “In my view, it was rational for the first defendant to decide that it was essential to adopt the emergency procedure to avoid serious danger to the health of children and young people who would otherwise be prescribed puberty blockers during that five- to six-month period.” Trump Calls out Harris for Hostility to Christians In the U.S., former President Donald Trump called out Vice President Kamala Harris last Friday for targeting people of faith. Trump spoke at the Turning Point USA event and criticized Democrat's hostility toward Catholics in particular. TRUMP: “As everyone here understands, the radical left ideology, Kamala supports is really militantly hostile toward Americans of faith. And you saw that during the pandemic, where people couldn't get together. Even when they want to get together with big spaces outside, they were ravaged. As a senator, she viciously attacked highly qualified judicial nominees, simply because they were members of the Knights of Columbus, suggesting that their Catholic faith disqualified them from serving on the federal bench.” Trump also promised to cut funding for schools that push “critical race theory, transgender insanity and other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content onto the lives of our children.” Tech billionaire Elon Musk posted a clip of Trump's statement, commenting, “Save our kids!” 1 out of 7 Americans Would Consider Moving if their Presidential Candidate Loses A new survey from StorageUnits.com found 15% of Harris and Trump voters say they will move if their preferred candidate loses. Among Harris voters, 19% said they would consider moving to a different state if Trump wins the presidential election. The top states they would consider moving to are New Jersey, California, and New York. Among Trump voters, 12% said they would considering moving if Harris wins the election. Many would consider moving to states like Florida and Texas. Fewer Protestants Inviting Others to Church Lifeway Research reports 60% of protestant churchgoers have invited someone to church with them in the past six months. That includes 20% who made three or more invitations. The numbers are slightly down from 2017 when 62% of respondents had invited someone to church. And 25% had offered three or more invitations. Lifeway found younger people, people who attend church more often, and evangelicals were among the most likely to invite others to church. Most Americans still Credit God for Mankind Gallup released their latest data on what Americans' believe about the origin of human life. A record 24% believe human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God had no part in this process. That's up from 9% in 1982. Meanwhile, 34% believe human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God guided this process. That's slightly down from 38% in 1982. And 37% believe God created human beings pretty much in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years or so. That's down from 44% in 1982. Hebrews 11:3 says, “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.” Anniversary of “In God We Trust” Motto And finally, this week is the anniversary of when the U.S. made “In God We Trust” its official motto. Congress passed legislation to make the phrase the motto on July 30, 1956. President Dwight Eisenhower signed the legislation the same day. But that's not all President Eisenhower did to acknowledge God during his presidency. As reported by PBS here is historian Kevin Kruse: KRUSE: “It's during Eisenhower's presidency, for instance, that the prayer breakfast became an annual event - an event at which clerics and politicians of all political stripes come together to pray for the nation. We get the addition of ‘under God' to the pledge of allegiance for the first time, which had previously been secular, had no mention of God. We get the adoption of a God we trust as the nation's first official motto in 1956. It's added to paper currency for the first time in 1957.” The phrase “In God is our Trust” appeared in “Defence of Fort M'Henry,” a poem written by Francis Scott Key in 1814. The poem would become the lyrics of the U.S. national anthem, better known as “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The poem's fourth verse says: “Praise the Power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto— ‘In God is our Trust'.” And that's The World View in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, July 31st, in the year of our Lord 2024. Both the U.S. national anthem and the flag that inspired the song are major legacies of the War of 1812 when the United States and its allies fought against the United Kingdom to preserve the young country. In September of 1814, British forces attacked Fort McHenry in Baltimore and failed. Watching the battle was Francis Scott Key who was so inspired by the defense of the city and a gigantic forty foot American flag draped over the garrison that he penned the lyrics to the nation's national anthem. Seemingly strait-laced Washington, D.C. in the 19th century was actually filled with illicit affairs. One of them involved some powerful players (and a very young wife). It also involved the son of Francis Scott Key, who wrote the Star Spangled Banner and it led to a murder that was the talk of pre-Civil War Washington…and beyond.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. Laurie Santos, Yale University's “Happiness Professor,” joins Offline to lay out a scientific guide to finding happiness. On her podcast The Happiness Lab and in her course Psychology and the Good Life (the most popular in Yale's 300 year history), Laurie educates people on the way our brains lie about what makes us happy and helps them reorient their priorities to find genuine happiness. She sits down with Jon to talk about the root causes of declining happiness among young people, why in-person interaction is a crucial part of being human, and why putting others before ourselves makes us happier than fulfilling what we think we want. Joe Biden breaks fundraising records and hits 8 swing states in 18 days, while a cash-strapped Donald Trump splits time between his beach club and a Manhattan courtroom. Trump goes after RFK Jr., Larry David goes after Trump, and No Labels goes after anyone left who will join their ticket. MAGA world goes nuts with conspiracy theories about how the Francis Scott Key bridge collapsed because of DEI programs and open borders. And later, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett of Texas stops by the studio to talk to Tommy about the secret to driving House Republicans crazy and reproductive rights.

We look into the engineering reasons why the Francis Scott Key bridge collapsed after a ship crashed into it. Also, a new analysis finds that more viruses spread from humans to animals than from animals to humans. The Engineering Behind Why The Bridge In Baltimore CollapsedOn Tuesday, a large section of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key bridge collapsed after an enormous container ship lost power and collided with the structure. Two people were rescued from the water, two bodies were recovered, and four others are unaccounted for and presumed dead. The structural failure of the bridge, which cut off a key roadway and a major international shipping port, has many wondering why this happened. Does the fault lie in aging infrastructure or in the manner the container ship struck one of the bridge's main supports?Guest host Arielle Duhaime-Ross talks to journalist Swapna Krishna about the engineering reasons behind why the bridge collapsed and other top stories in science this week, including rockets NASA is launching during next week's solar eclipse, new research about how Homo sapiens traveled out of Africa, and visualizing the magnetic field of the black hole at the center of our galaxy.Mapping Out How Viruses Jump Between SpeciesIn the world of emerging infectious diseases, one of the looming threats comes from the so-called zoonotic diseases—pathogens that somehow make the jump from an animal host to a human one. This includes pathogens such as COVID-19 and avian influenza, a.k.a. bird flu, which can sometimes cross the species divide. But a new analysis published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution finds that when it comes to viruses, more viral species appear to have jumped from humans to animals than the other way around. And even more cases of interspecies transmission don't involve humans at all.Cedric Tan, a PhD student in the University College London Genetics Institute and Francis Crick Institute, joins guest host Arielle Duhaime-Ross to talk about the analysis, and what it tells us about our place in a global web of viruses.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Lisa Heinzerling, law professor at Georgetown University, to discuss the impact of the Supreme Court's upcoming rulings on Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo & Relentless v. Department of Commerce, as well as the court hearing arguments yesterday regarding mifepristone and medication abortion. Then, Sam speaks with Heather Herbert, a hospice registered nurse at PeaceHealth Medical Center in Springfield, Oregon and member of the Oregon Nurses Association (ONA), to discuss the recent strike action at the hospital and the new labor complaints they've filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). First, Sam runs through updates on the US public's disapproval of Israel's genocide, the US State Department, Texas' fascist border power grab, labor action across the US, legal woes for Trump and Co., and Ronna McDaniel's brief NBC tenure, before diving into details of the collision that collapsed Francis Scott Key in Baltimore, and the profiteering that drives disasters like this one. Professor Lisa Heinzerling then joins, diving right into the context of the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine's suit against the FDA, including their objections to the FDA's relaxation of requirements for Mifepristone, the most common abortion medication in the US, and the overwhelming scientific evidence for the efficacy and safety of the drug. Expanding on this, Professor Heinzerling looks at this case within the broader context of the Supreme Court's attack on the administrative state, fitting neatly into a pattern of cases with very vague and obscure claims of injury resulting in massive shakeups to the legal and political structure in the US, something also reflected in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, before walking through the greater idea of the Chevron Doctrine and administrative deference. After assessing where this current iteration of the Roberts Court stands among the most extreme activist courts, Lisa and Sam wrap up the interview with a brief conversation on the reaction of legal institutions and law schools to the myriad ongoing Supreme Court scandals. Nurse Heather Herbert and Sam then dive into the context of ONA's ongoing labor action, with contract negotiations stalling for over a year as PeaceHealth attempted to force lower pay on some 125 hospice and home care workers, despite the same qualifications as hospital nurses with additionally extensive and expensive training required. After expanding on the serious hit this process took on these Nurses, Herbert dives into the hospice Nurses' difficult decision to strike, tackling the clear unfair labor practices exercised by PeaceHealth in response, and wrapping up with a conversation on the strike's support from and impact on patients and community members. And in the Fun half: Sam admires the growing protests against US complicity in the genocide of Gaza, including actions against Reps Jeffries and McGovern and President Biden, and watches the right-wing attempt to spin the Francis Scott Key Bridge disaster into a diversity issue instead of a capitalism one. Casey in DC uncovers some odd coincidences in Rep. Bill Johnson's (R-OH) post-congress career path, Bobby from Georgia explores the perception of inflation under Biden alongside rising housing costs, and Fox News hosts react to the Ronna McDaniel saga. Dylan from Ft. Collins on the slow journey out of right-wing conspiracy, Pep from Texas on Blinken's Zionism, and Stephen Crowder's workplace and domestic abuses come to the fore, plus, your calls and IMs! Two of Sean "Diddy" Combs' homes were raided in Los Angeles and Miami, and his alleged drug mule is missing. Plus, Cuba Gooding Jr. has been named in connection with Diddy's alleged crimes. The Democrat-led Senate could've prevented federal funds from being used for illegal immigrants but didn't, and Massachusetts is burning $75 million a month on immigrant shelters. The Port of Baltimore was the 17th busiest port in the nation ranked by total tons in 2021, according to the latest data available from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. It is the fifth largest on the East Coast, outsized by the ports of New York-New Jersey; Virginia; Mobile, Alabama; and Savanah, Georgia. Governor Wes Moore said last year that the port handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo, worth $80 billion, in 2023. That was a record high.It was the first in terms of the volume of automobiles and light trucks (including 847,158 cars and light trucks),roll on/roll off heavy farm and construction machinery, imported sugar, and imported gypsum, the governor's office said. It was ninth overall as measured by the volume of foreign cargo handled and ninth in terms of the value of foreign cargo., according to Moore. The closure of the port could create serious supply chain disruptions for both consumer goods and industrial imports that go into goods manufactured in the U.S. It's unlikely that all of the lost capacity will be able to be absorbed by the other ports on the Eastern seaboard of the U.S. This raises the danger of additional inflation in the U.S. Inflation has fallen from the very high levels seen in the first two years of the Biden administration but remains elevated by historical standards and above levels the Feder...
