You are probably asking yourself right now, “solo synchronized swimming…Isn't that an oxymoron?” And while you would be correct, it didn't stop it from being a honest-to-god true Olympic sport in not one, but three, Olympic Games: 1984, 1988, 1992. We guess that by 1992 a dictionary or thesaurus ended up at the IOC headquarters and they quietly got rid of it. All of which leads Jon and Kurt to have fur this episode sharing absolute true stranger than fiction legitimate crazy (getting the idea) Olympic sports. Like chorus singing (1912-1948), live pigeon shooting (1900), hot air ballooning (1900), etc. Nothing needs to be embellished here…the authenticity of these events generates the humor. Take a listen and be amazed at what humans can come up with to compete for medals. Olympic bobbing for apples anyone?

This week on the "Every 4 Years" Podcast, we are honored to have Anita Alvarez, a 3-time Olympian for the US in Artistic Swimming (formerly known as Synchronized Swimming). Imagine being known more for a photo capturing one of your lowest moments than for your incredible achievements as a world-renowned athlete. That's Anita's story. At the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Anita fainted in the pool at the end of her solo free routine and sank to the bottom. Her coach, Andrea Fuentes, heroically jumped in to rescue her. From this near-death experience to her remarkable journey of qualifying for her third Olympics in Paris, we cover it all. Anita's journey in Artistic Swimming began early. She competed in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials as a 14-year-old. Her passion for the sport runs in the family; her mom competed in the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials with her duet and placed 7th. We also explore Anita's personal connection to the iconic 1980 Olympic "Miracle on Ice" hockey game in Lake Placid, NY, through her grandfather. Join us as we dive deep into the resilience, determination, and inspiring story of Anita Alvarez. This is an episode you will want to listen to over and over. What is going on with the Sunnydale Swim team!? Last week they had jicama breath and we didn't even know they existed, and now they're walking the halls like they own the damn place? Sure, they won the State Semi-Finals and apparently don't actually have to EARN their computer grades (much to Willow and Xander's dismay), but it definitely seems that something more than winning is getting to their heads. Much to everyone's dismay, Principal Snyder is back, commiserating with the equally awful Coach Carl, and the two of them will go to ANY length to win State… even if that means turning the swim team into slimy, creepy, Gill Monsters. Per usual, it's up to the Scoobs to save the day! Will the gang figure out how to defeat The Sea Man? Who summoned him in the first place? And why the hell are they so good at Synchronized Swimming? Maybe they'll still win a State Championship after all! Today we'll speak to Ashley Johnson, an elite level synchronize swim coach about how she is making the sport more inclusive not only for young Black women, but also welcoming for other marginalized groups.

We welcome 2-time Olympian Myriam Glez to the show who is now the Founder & CEO of Athletes Soul. Having reached the highest levels in the sport of Synchronized Swimming, Myriam is now investing her time into a program that aids former athletes with the transition into the working world (Sound familiar?!) We discuss how the transitions we face may challenge you, but how they also shape you in the process for future moments. We also establish what the power of respecting preparation can have on your career, while highlighting how a coach is not just required in your sport but that you can certainly utilize one in life as well.
After competing for the French National Team at the Sydney Olympics, Myriam retired from Synchronized Swimming to attend business school. She worked for Accorhotels in marketing and sponsorship in France, Thailand, and Australia and eventually resumed her sporting career to compete for the Australian National Team in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Following her second retirement, Myriam combined her business and sports knowledge to return to sport and worked in high performance and sport management in England and in the U.S for several years before founded Athletes Soul. Where are you from? I was born in Lyon, France. I have an older step-brother who lived with us when I was little and then it was just me, my parents and my cat. When and how did you start synchronized swimming? I grew up in a family of skiers. We spent a lot of time in the mountains in winter and summer. So there was no background in swimming in my family but I always loved the water. I saw Muriel Hermine (a famous French synchronized swimmer) on TV and knew this is what I wanted to do. It took me about a year to convince my mum to look into it. I was six when she finally registered me with the local club. Can you give us a summary of your career? I had abilities for the sport and pretty quickly I started training five days per week. We lived pretty far from the pool and, in middle school, it would take me 1.5 hours to get to practice from school. I would take the regional bus, then the city bus, the subway and another bus. But I had all my friends at swimming and I loved it so I never thought of it as difficult. I would use the travel time to do my homework. I competed in age group national championships from 10 years old on. I won my first national championships at 12 and participated in youth national team every year after that. At 15, I moved to the National Training Center in Paris to train for the Junior World Championships. After that, I made the senior national team and participated in many international competitions: winning the silver and bronze medals in European championships and cups, placing in top five at world championships and cups, and fourth at the 2000 Olympic Games. I was promoted to the duet after Sydney and competed for another two years with the French Team. I retired at the end of 2002 and then went to business school. I returned to the sport at the end of 2005 and competed in the Beijing Olympics for Australia in 2008, placing seventh. Learn more about Myriam here https://www.linkedin.com/in/myriam-glez-8682422/

Erin excels at a "sport" no one cares about.
Today we're delighted to have Canadian Olympian Jacqueline Simoneau to explain the sport of synchronized swimming (also known as artistic swimming). This sport is no joke - it requires stamina and strength and the ability to take a kick, perhaps to the head. Jacqueline explains it all, the sequins, the hair gelatin, and the amazingly complicated moves like stack lifts, spins and thrusts. It's nothing like that classic SNL sketch. Jacqueline competed in the duet competition with veteran Karine Thomas at the Rio 2016 Games, earning a 7th place for their combined routines. Check out their free performance here (they're first up), which is pretty amazing, but here's their 2015 Pan Am free routine, which is phenomenal (Jill may have watched it a few times today). Follow Jacqueline on Twitter and Insta! We also have updates on team members Erin Jackson and Emily Cook! Photo courtesy of Jacqueline Simoneau/Team Canada.
