June is PRIDE month and we're celebrating by bringing you an episode about efforts to bring LGBTQ+ history to light. As one guest, historian William Mann writes, “Throughout its history, Connecticut's LGBTQ population has moved from leading hidden, solitary lives to claiming visible, powerful, valuable, and contributing places in society.”  In this episode, we talk about what historians have found in Connecticut's Colonial records, some surprising connections to famous individuals and landmarks and at the end of the episode, there's a recommendation for  three places to visit to celebrate LGBTQ+ history.   In order to prepare for this episode, two digital resources created by our guests were used. She is an advisor to an inspiring new project, the Ridgefield LGBTQ Oral History Project. The Ridgefield Oral History project is a partnership between the Ridgefield Historical Society and Ridgefield Pride that will train high school students to conduct oral interviews with members of Ridgefield's gay community. Ferentinos is a public history researcher, writer, and consultant helping cultural organizations share untold stories about women and LGBTQ people. She is advising the Ridgefield LGBTQ Oral History Project and has recently worked with the Palmer-Warner House in East Haddam, Connecticut, and the Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site in Hyde Park, New York. My guest of this episode is William F. Mann, who has been a freemason for 30 years and written several books, part of them non-fiction, part of them fiction but nearly all of them revolving around Masonic history and concepts. William was born in the 1950s and from an early age on he was interested in solving puzzles and following clues to discover hidden meanings of his surroundings. His father's family had a rich Masonic tradition as far as it could be traced back and from his mother's side William had the chance to be introduced to North American indigenous traditions. Today, William is the Supreme Grandmaster of the Sovereign Great Priory of Canada and lives in Ontario. In this episode of the show we will discuss topics that might be completely off the radar of many of our listeners as we in Europe have sometimes little knowledge about the ideas and concepts in occulture that are very specific to certain parts of North America. Hopefully this episode will be even more fascinating and also lead to some further research and exchange of thoughts. One focus of our conversation will be William's notion concerning the role of the Knights Templar in North America having published ‘The Knights Templar in the New World: How Henry Sinclair Brought the Grail to Acadia', ‘The Templar Meridians: The Secret Mapping of the New World' and ‘Templar Sanctuaries in North America: Sacred Bloodlines and Secret Treasures'. We'll talk about his ideas that inspired him to write these books and the conclusions he draws upon. In this context we will first shed some light upon the general history of the Knights Templar in medieval Europe and then William will introduce us to the concept of the Knights Templar embarking on transatlantic expeditions to North America. We're also going to explore a highly fascinating idea concerning certain similarities between Templar and indigenous rituals in North America and their respective core concepts and elements as well as potential historical interactions and relationships between both groups sharing their wisdom on a basis of mutual respect and acceptance. Of course, William's most recently published book with Inner Traditions, ‘The Last Refuge of the Knights Templar: The Ultimate Secret of the Pike Letters' based on a series of 33 letters in the late 1800s between Confederate General Albert Pike and British Colonel James Wilson Bury MacLeod Moore will be of special interest. In the end, we'll mention one of William's upcoming projects to investigate early Templar settlements and the evidence of ancient civilisations in North America with a group of Masonic geologists which might ultimately culminate in a new book. This 1963 John song often gets overlooked these days as album filler. However, this With The Beatles track can be seen as one of the songs responsible for writers and critics viewing The Beatles as actual artists. In a 1963 article, critic William Mann called John and Paul the greatest British songwriters of the year, but also heaped praise upon the band's "lugubrious" music and "pandiatonic clusters, and "the Aeolian cadence of 'Not A Second Time.'" John viewed this as nonsense, but the result was the validation of them not just as pop stars of the moment, but as writers of real serious art. It brought to light the unusual quality of work the band was doing from the onset, and one could argue is indirectly responsible for not just this podcast, but all Beatles podcasts, books, documentaries, etc. And even though it's tacked on the end of the record, it's better than people give it credit for. It's part of a handful that mark the beginning of John's dominant period in the band, where his confidence is at an all time high, and his material is top notch, a period that would reach its apex on A Hard Day's Night. Friedenstag (Peace Day) is an opera in one act by Richard Strauss, his Opus 81 and TrV 271, to a German libretto by Joseph Gregor. The opera was premiered at Munich on 24 July 1938 and dedicated to Viorica Ursuleac and her husband Clemens Krauss, the lead and conductor respectively. Strauss had intended Friedenstag as part of a double-bill, to be conducted by Karl Böhm in Dresden, that would include as the second part his next collaboration with Gregor, Daphne. The opera thematically expresses anti-war sentiments, which William Mann has described as "a determined counter to the militaristic policies of Nazi Germany". These caused the work to be shelved after the outbreak of World War II.
