The film author and teacher William J. Mann makes his first appearance on the podcast. Mann is a New York Times-bestselling author of many books on Hollywood and the American film industry, including his most recent "The Contender: The Story of Marlon Brando", for which he was granted access to Brando's private estate archive, as well as "Kate: The Woman Who Was Hepburn" (named a Notable Book of the Year by the Times); "Hello Gorgeous: Becoming Barbra Streisand: (praised by USA Today for its “meticulous research and insightful analysis”; and "Edge of Midnight: The Life of John Schlesinger", for which he worked closely with the Oscar-winning director. Mann won the 2014 Edgar Allan Poe Award for "Tinseltown: Murder, Morphine and Madness at the Dawn of Hollywood," which reveals how an unsolved murder in 1922 created the American studio system. He's recently completed "Bogie and Bacall: The Surprising True Story of Hollywood's Greatest Romance", forthcoming from HarperCollins in spring 2023. Mann is also a professor of film and popular culture at Central Connecticut State University. He's been featured in several documentary films about Hollywood history and has served as a consultant for various television programs. His interest in writing about Hollywood has always been to explore how movies both reflect and shape their times, as well as how the business of filmmaking—the selling of dreams and illusions—can reveal so much about society and ourselves.

In early 1922, Hollywood was in damage control. The recent "Fatty" Arbuckle manslaughter and rape case had brought unwanted scandal to the motion picture industry, so when Paramount Pictures director William Desmond Taylor was found murdered in his home on February 1st, the studio tried its best to cover it up. Despite this, the murder case became a national sensation with attention falling on multiple suspects, including a valet who had been blackmailing Taylor, comedy star Mabel Normand and film ingenue Mary Miles Minter.My guest is William J.  Lives of the state’s LGBTQ citizens have moved from being hidden and solitary to claiming visible, powerful, valuable, and contributing places in society. In this episode, Mary Donohue, Asst. Publisher of Connecticut Explored, interviews CCSU Assistant Professor of History William J. Mann about when and how the LGBTQ movement started in Connecticut, what legislative goals and strategies drove the movement, and what the current goals are for the LGBTQ movement. Mann discusses the impact of AIDS and the ways that the LGBTQ community supported its members. He describes how his students helped to research and uncover the people and events highlighted in the online exhibition, “Historic Timeline of Connecticut’s LGBTQ  Community.” Mann wrote CT Explored’s “A Brief History of Connecticut’s Gay Media,” available at www.ctexplored.org/a-brief-history-of-connecticut-gay-media/.   Mann teaches LGBTQ history, film history, and the history of AIDS. He is the director of CCSU's LGBTQ Center. From 1989-1995, he was the editor and later publisher of Metroline, the state’s LGBTQ newsmagazine, and coordinator of Your Turf, the first LGBTQ youth group in the state. In 1989, along with Terri Reid, William founded the long-running queer film festival known today as Out Film CT. William Desmond Taylor was a big deal. A director in the pre-talkie era of Hollywood, Taylor was a giant in the film industry. He worked with the likes of the greats of that time: Mabel Normand, Mary Pickford, Jack Pickford, Wallace Reed, and Douglas MacLean.  In February of 1922, the houseman found William Desmond Taylor murdered. He had been shot to death, and the resulting furor over his passing went well beyond the tabloids of the era. In context, the murder of William Desmond Taylor was yet another bargaining chip for the growing moral majority of the time period to argue against films as a valid form of creative expression directed at the youth of America. See, Hollywood -- Tinseltown, as it was widely known -- was not the innocent place one might imagine. There were plenty of scandals, even back in the Roaring Twenties. Not only did you have the death of William Desmond Taylor, but there was also the Fatty Arbuckle rape trial to contend with. Stars were going to secret rehabs to dry out of their cocaine addictions. People were ODing and ending up cast aside.  It was a wild time. And William Desmond Taylor's murder was at the center of it all. To make matters worse, the crime was never officially solved, so this podcast episode is all to do with the unsolved murder of William Desmond Taylor. However, there's a twist to this story that I would rather not spoil for the casual listener. It's the thing that makes this particular Hollywood murder something of an anomaly, and it's almost fit to be put on screen. The William Desmond Taylor book from which I've drawn most of my research is, of course, William J. Mann's 'Tinseltown: Murder, Morphine, and Madness at the Dawn of Hollywood.' It is a fantastically-researched book, on par, in my opinion, with Erik Larson's 'Devil in the White City.'
