The general perception of domestic abuse and it's reality can be far removed. The picture of a black eye and it only involving two adults in a relationship can often mean it's overlooked, excused and unrelatable. This episode looks at breaking some of those myths down and shows how damaging it is that the current Domestic Abuse Bill doesn't include children and young people. We hear from Paulette, who has lived in domestic abuse from being a young girl to becoming a mother herself and look at sexual abuse in a domestic context. Please note this audio comes with a trigger warning and refers to sexual abuse. With thanks to Gwen Bleasdale CEO of The Liberty Centre and Naomi Donald pioneer of SafeLives and Founder of PODS (Protect Our Daughters and Sons) and Paulette for sharing her journey with us.Help and Support:https://www.mankind.org.uk/CALL 01823 334244Confidential helpline for male victims of domestic abuse and domestic violenceWeekdays 10am to 4pmWomen’s Aid live chat is on the Women's Aid website. https://www.womensaid.org.uk/National Domestic abuse helpline 08082000247Samaritans 116123Call 999 if in immediate dangerUndiscussable has been backed by the Audio Content Fund for a special 8 part series with national radio station TalkRadio in the UK. Technology can be very helpful to survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and stalking, but is also often misused by abusers to harass, threaten, coerce, monitor, exploit, and violate their victims. The resources below explore the extent and nature of technology-facilitated abuse. In this podcast we discuss with Julia Slupska to discuss how smart home devices can be a tool for domestic violence and ways we can improve the security around it. Speaker Profile: Julia Slupska is a doctoral student at the Centre for Doctoral Training in Cybersecurity and the Oxford Internet Institute. Her research focuses on how cybersecurity concepts and practices can address the technologically-mediated abuse. She is also exploring how feminist theories and methodology—such as participatory action research and the ethics of care—can improve cybersecurity. Previously, she completed the MSc in Social Science of the Internet on the role of metaphors in international cybersecurity policy. Before joining the OII, Julia worked on an LSE Law project on comparative regional integration and coordinated a course on Economics in Foreign Policy for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. According to Women's Aid, domestic abuse is "an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour." In the majority of cases, domestic violence is committed by a partner or ex partner, but it can also be perpetrated by a family member or carer. In the vast majority of cases, domestic violence victims are quite often women. Domestic abuse can come in many forms, including but not limited to coercive control, psychological and or emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse, harrassment and stalking. Coercive control is defined as an act designed to make a person dependent on them by isolating them from support and depriving them of independence. Common examples of coercive behaviour include making threats or intimidating you, taking control over aspects of your everyday life and humiliating, degrading or dehumanising you. Women's Aid suggests that women are much more likely to experience domestic abuse than men and that domestic abuse occurs regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexuality, class or disability. Over the past few weeks we've been hearing women’s personal experiences about their relationships and why things went wrong. Today it's the turn of a woman we're calling " Sadie". Nurses are under-valued across the UK because of an old-fashioned view that caring for others is a ‘feminine characteristic’. That’s according to a new study, commissioned by the Royal College of Nursing. Jenni talks to Dr Anne Humbert one of the authors of the report and to Dame Donna Kinnair Chief Exec and General Secretary of the RCN about what needs to be done to change the public perception of the profession. The domestic abuse sector is facing a sustained funding crisis, with the Women's Aid Annual Audit showing that 64% of refuge referrals were declined last year. The number of refuge bed spaces in England is now 30% below the number recommended by the Council of Europe. Sarah Davidge the Research and Evaluation Manager from Women's Aid talks about what they think needs to be done to plug the funding gap. Thank you so much for your interaction with last week’s podcast.  It is not easy to talk about violence in our personal relationships, but what’s great about talking about these kinds of difficult subjects - is that the more we talk, the harder it is for things to stay hidden.  The more we expose what is happening, the more we challenge the people and circumstances that allow violence in our relationships to take place and the more we challenge, the more we build ourselves up to take decisive action and break free. In this week’s episode we come to the final episode of what I wanted to cover, in terms of ‘someone’ holding you back from living your best life.  In part 1 of this series I looked at loneliness holding you back from living your best life.  In part 2 I looked at physical abuse and an abusive partner as the someone holding you back. In this final episode in this series, I’m talking about coercive control as the way your partner may act or use a pattern of acts made up of assault, threats, humiliation, intimidation or other abuses that are used to harm, punish, or frighten you - the aim being to use punishment or fear to control your behaviour.   The control of your behaviour is designed to make you dependent on your partner by isolating you from support or by exploiting you or by depriving you of independence, with the overall aim of regulating your everyday behaviour. Coercive control is about creating invisible chains around you to instil a sense of fear that seeps into all elements of your life. Your partner can also have the intention of using coercive forms of abuse as a way of limiting your life by depriving you of your liberty and reducing your ability to take actions of your choice.    I hope you find something useful in the episode and if you recognise yourself or someone you know – that you feel able to take the first steps towards freeing yourself so you can take the first steps towards living your best life today. Hi everyone I hope you had a positive week.  My week - it’s been amusing. Lots of people I know are travelling in Afrika and sending me funny memes, which are keeping me laughing.  You know it’s good to laugh, but I also understand that in lots of our relationships, laughing is the last thing some of us are able to do and here’s where I want to continue the current theme of looking at something or someone that might be holding you back from living your best life.   If you listened to last week’s episode… you’ll know that I dealt with the impact of loneliness on your ability to live your best life.  This week, I’m starting a series of podcasts that look at domestic abuse in all its forms, beginning this week with looking at how physical harm in your relationship… can hold you back from living your best life. It’s interesting that we should be talking about this subject during the United Nations’ ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence’ Campaign, which runs every year from 25th November to 10th December.   Right across the world, organisations and businesses are paying particular attention to gender-based and domestic violence in the work they are doing and I felt that this podcast should be no different because Black women and men also suffer domestic abuse in all its forms. If you are affected by domestic violence, please use the organisational contact details below and reach out for help and support. Thanks for listening. For this episode, we are looking at controlling and abusive relationships. Domestic abuse is often hidden behind closed doors, but for this episode we are joined by the charity Women’s Aid to bring it out into the open. We are joined by Sian Hawkins, Head of Campaigns and Public Affairs at Women’s Aid and Alex, a support worker on the National Domestic Violence Helpline which the charity runs in partnership with Refuge. Just to clarify, the charity does not endorse any products featured on this podcast or the podcast’s sponsors. In this episode we discuss Lala's followers topics including: What are the red flags for an abuser? How do you move on from someone who won't let you go? I am struggling with different information from social services and housing about what my rights are? My partner hurts me but I am dependent on him financially and emotionally. Do perpetrators programmes work? My friend is in a violent relationship, how can I make her leave him? My violent ex has a new girlfriend - should I warn her about him? I miss my abuser even though things were awful when I was with him. How do I handle mutual friends and family who have been charmed by the abuser and victim blame? Can an abuser change without professional help? My ex always put me down, how can I stop his words ringing through my head now I'm dating again? How do you help children who have witnessed DV? I have had 3 abusive partners - how do I break the cycle? What legal support is available? Why do survivors stay for so long? How can you ever trust anyone again after an abusive relationship? If a guy is really jealous and wants to control your every move is that domestic violence? Is it abuse if it is physical but non-serious like slapping, pushing, grabbing etc? Is it normal to suffer from PTSD after an abusive relationship? I am scared to leave my abusive partner because he has threatened to commit suicide if I do. And much more!!

Laura Richards talks with special guest David Challen, the son of Sally Challen, who is currently in prison serving an 18 year sentence for the murder of Richard Challen in 2011.During her trial jurors were told that she attacked him with a hammer whilst he ate his lunch at the kitchen table of the former marital home.David is leading the charge to free his mother from prison and tells Laura about what it was like growing up at home and what his mother and father's relationship was really like behind closed doors.Since Sally's conviction, the concept of coercive control has been introduced into law following the successful Domestic Violence Law Reform Campaign spearheaded byLaura Richards in partnership with Women's Aid and Sara Charlton Charitable Foundation. Given the advances in law and analysis of coercive control, Sally's murder conviction is now being looked at with fresh eyes and challenged in the courts setting a precedent in UK law. Domestic Abuse and Child Contact: New Guidance for Judges - Episode 5

I am a Health Visitor

In September 21017 new legal guidance was released for judges making decisions in child contact cases where is domestic abuse is a known factor. The change has come following the 'Child First' campaign by Women's Aid and attempts to address concerns raised by their report "Nineteen Child Homicides". This report tells the story of 19 children intentionally killed by their parent during unsafe child contact arrangements, some of which were court ordered, often against the advice of professionals such as health visitors. The new guidance, Practice Direction 12J, recommends that where a risk assessment flags ongoing risk to the child there will be no contact ordered, even at a contact centre, and that courts should provide special protection measures to guarantee the safety of both survivors of domestic abuse and their children in court. It will hold judges more accountable by requiring them to follow the guidance and also explain why any contact that they order will not expose the child to further harm and how it is in child’s best interest. In this podcast we give you an insight into this guidance and why health visitors need to understand it in their practice.
