Send us Fan MailOn today's show we travel down the road to Carlow University Pittsburgh's MFA in Creative Writing Program during its annual June residency at Trinity College, Dublin where we have been invited to interview novelist Caitriona Lally about her latest book, the memoir Home Economics. So grab that flat white, latte, tea and rasher sandwich and have a listen to Caitriona's fascinating account of balancing life as a cleaner in the housekeeping department of Trinity College with the life of a successful writer. Bold and thought-provoking, self-deprecating and soaked in Caitríona Lally's singular voice, her first memoir quietly but forcefully puzzles over personal/home economics, creativity and the true impact of 'success' and 'failure' on a writer's life.'Since I've had my first book published, I've earned more from cleaning than from writing. The home economics don't add up.'Between 2015 and 2021, Caitríona Lally published her first two novels, Eggshells and Wunderland. To buy her time to write during those years, she returned to the housekeeping department at Trinity College Dublin, a job she once held as a student. This begins a negotiation between the practical and creative demands of her life, further complicated when she becomes pregnant and almost impossible when the pandemic hits.Reviews for Home Economics"This is absolutely one to read about the reality of 'making it' as an artist, and how to live, make money and create."– AOIFE BARRY, THE JOURNAL"Hilarious, audacious, and deeply felt. An idiosyncratic hymn to the drudgery of life!"– SARA BAUME"I thought I'd be interested in Home Economics because I too work a manual job that pays a pittance, yet still provides more income than writing books. And yes, Lally is wonderfully insightful about the difficulties and advantages of such a life. But in the end it was her wit, her ever-curious and amused outlook on the daily trials and joys of life, that had me hooked. This book has that delicate quality of seeming simple while containing all the complexity of trying not simply to make a living, but to live."– LUCY SWEENEY BYRNE "A remarkable piece of writing ... As a fellow writer, I read the book with a profound sense of respect for what Caitríona has achieved, particularly given the difficult circumstances under which much of this work has been produced. Her account of sustaining a writing life alongside paid labour and motherhood is both unsparing and generous, and it resonated deeply with me ... There is something quietly bracing in encountering such a lucid account of a writing life, one that refuses myth-making while still allowing space for ambition, desire and joy ... This is a generous, intelligent and finely wrought book."– PATRICK HOLLOWAYLogo designed by Freya Sirr.Intro/outro music: Colm Mac Con Iomaire, 'Thou Shalt Not Carry' from The Hare's Corner, 2008, with thanks to Colm for permission to use it. Support the show

In this episode, Gary sits down with Dr Caitriona Ryan and Dr Niki Ralph, co-founders of the Institute of Dermatologists in Dublin, to unpack how they built a modern “centre of excellence” model in Irish private care - combining medical dermatology, cosmetic dermatology, skincare, and a growing surgical pathway under one roof. They share the realities of scaling a high-trust healthcare business (systems, hiring, standards, and culture), how COVID sparked a major pivot into new services, and why Ireland needs to shift from reactive healthcare to preventative, longevity-led thinking. Plus: the story behind ID Formulas, their new data-driven approach to supplements (including wearables integration), and what they believe actually moves the needle for healthspan. What's so special about the Sabbath? Many modern Christians don't quite know what to do with it, and often end up practising elements of it inconsistently—or avoiding it altogether. But whatever we do (or don't do) will have wider consequences somewhere down the line. Should Christians keep a day dedicated to rest “unto the Lord”? What does that look like? Where does modern Sabbath-keeping (or Sabbath avoidance) go wrong? What are the wider societal implications of Sabbath-keeping within a nation? And how can families and churches navigate the challenge of hectic, chaotic work schedules—and show the world a different way, rooted in peace and faith in the Lord? Andy and Aaron dig into these questions, reflect on some of their recent travels (some more “Sabbath-like” than others!), and explore what a thoughtful approach to Sabbath might look like today. And get your Pod of the Gaps mug here — https://www.etsy.com/shop/CaitsCraftyCornerUK — courtesy of Andy's 12 year-old-daughter, Caitriona! Every mug bought helps keep Pod of the Gaps going :-)

Welcome to this week's episode of Clare Women in Business on Clare FM. In 2016, Caitriona Considine decided to start her own business. She did so on the Wild Atlantic Way at St Brigid's Well near Liscannor where her husband Kevin grew up and his family operated a pub and farmed locally. They set about converting a 150 year old stone cottage beside the family home. It was the perfect location to establish a design led, destination gift and coffee shop. Catriona gave up years of working in the corporate sector and commuting between Clare and Dublin to set up Moher Cottage.

How the human element of cybersecurity could be affecting your business

In episode 202 of the Small Business Talk Podcast, host Cathy Smith had a chat with Caitriona Forde from Cait IT about the human element of cybersecurity and its implications for businesses. The focus of the discussion was on how human error contributes significantly to cybersecurity breaches. Caitriona mentioned that recent statistics showed that almost 90% of cyber incidents stem from human error, with each cyber incident involving some human element. The conversation highlighted the fact that while businesses heavily invest in improving their technology, the security aspect is often overlooked. One issue discussed was the handling of passwords, and the dangerous practice of sending passwords or sensitive information like bank details and credit card numbers through emails. Caitriona also spoke about how an individual's unfamiliarity with technology could lead to security vulnerabilities, citing an instance where she helped a woman set up a password manager. Caitriona highlighted that businesses face the challenge of employees carrying out risky behaviours, which the business owners may not be aware of. She further noted that staff could unknowingly implement unsecure workarounds, especially when their bosses are unavailable, leading to businesses being hacked. The conversation then turned towards the fear of reporting mistakes in the workplace. Caitriona mentioned how creating a safe space for employees to report errors could help prevent cyber incidents. She gave an example of simulated phishing campaigns that show how easily employees can fall for scams, emphasising the need for a slower, more careful approach in a fast-paced work environment. Towards the end of the discussion, they spoke about the difficulty in identifying malicious activities, even when things look perfect. Caitriona mentioned how hackers are getting better at drafting convincing emails and warned of the rise of AI, which has given hackers an edge in creating better phishing emails. Overall, the podcast episode highlighted the crucial role that human behaviour plays in cybersecurity and emphasised the need for more proactive and secure practices in the workplace. We'd like to lodge a complaint with whoever titled this episode, first off. Secondly, whose idea was it to pronounce Versailles, Kentucky that way? Not. Cool.Drink picks: Terri: The Sassenach Wild Scottish Gin!! Having a G&T with Aromatic tonic water and a slice of apple. It is so velvety smooth it will blow your mind.Megan: 10th Mountain Whiskey from Colorado. They're sponsoring the Bourbon Ball this weekend, go give them a like, a follow, and buy a bottle!Ivy: Redemption Whiskey, 88 proof that drinks like a 150 proof.Starz, you could have done a trigger warning. That's all we have to say about that.Okay, that's a lie. Alex Vlahos did a fantastic job making us hate him. GREAT acting, Alex.Mrs. Bug is as stealth as Ian...she even had an extra shovel with her! Where did that come from?Megan talks about the "artistic license" the show took with medical conditions.Hosts discuss how the show made time fly. Did they accelerate the timelines too much? Maybe.Ivy wants more Lizzie and the Beardsleys. Noted.Brianna, Lord John and William's meeting was a little anticlimactic for Terri.Ivy noticed that nobody has visited Fersali in Wilmington. The writers' room should really take our notes into consideration.Jamie & John's breakup broke Ivy's heart. Terri would like to see the resurrection of THE Kiss. Claire is still jealous of Lord John. You'll see it if you know where to look. The fireflies were a CGI choice that we *did* notice. So far this season, everybody needs creation of new awards so there are enough to go around. Ivy reviews the acting accomplishments. Kudos especially to Caitriona and Sam. Terri praises the fandom's creativity and the show's writers, producers, crew, etc. What if/WTF? Ivy noticed there was no crazy buzzing when they all got near the stones at Okracoke. We will riot if the writers pull a "Lost" with our Outlander.Ivy feels vindicated over her feelings for Donner last week. Terri has issues with the introduction of "Jamie's" new scar. How will the show handle the Frenchman's gold and the Bugs? Finally, why doesn't Donner know ether is flammable? Also, will we meet the White Sow?Next week: possible live episode from Kentucky. Stay tuned! Please rate us on your podcast platform! MEGAN IS BACK! She had a great time in Florida but we MISSED her something fierce.Jessica/Malva is a great actress, just like Nell/Laoghaire.Drinks picks:Ivy: Eagle RareTerri: Hendricks Lunar expression in an elderflower martini. More prep work for Sassenach Wild Scottish Gin (Terri's is on the way to Arizona)Meg: Body Armor. Sounds like it should be 2 steps beyond Liquid Courage, but unfortunately it's strawberry banana coconut water. #bodyarmorMeg's great aunt Minnie Malvina has the same eyes as Wednesday Adams and Malva Christie. The cutting of Claire's hair was actually an accepted medical practice during Victorian times. But Ivy thinks Malva is a master manipulator via gossip. And Ivy dives into the origins of old wives' tales.Ivy calls out Sam & Caitriona for the debacle of Jamie & Malva's fireside chat as well as the whole Ether business...new exec producers on the block. Actually, Ivy just has a suspicious nature in general. Yeah, I said it. What made Claire hit rock bottom with the ether?=========================Episode 608: I am Not AloneHow the hell do the Ridgies and the Fisher Folk explain themselves? Evictions. NOW. 'nough said. And how do the Frasers explain their basement arsenal?? Jamie, just make it make sense. The Fisher Folk are essentially recreating Claire's witch trial from 30 years earlier.Kudos for the chemistry between Roger & Bree, and also the last night at the Big House between Jamie & Claire.  Terri & Ivy's wish list for future assignments for the intimacy coordinator as well. Kudos to Young Ian for convincing Jamie to arm the Natives because they wound up saving his ass on the beach. Here's hoping Season 7 sticks closer to the books. Quick reference to My Big Fat Greek Wedding.#obsassenachs mascot Corny sat in on the recording this week.
