Recognizing a need for broader community engagement on public projects, an innovative approach has been created in Rochester, Minnesota. It's called Community Co-Design -- a process that encourages, compensates and prioritizes the inclusion of diverse populations throughout the design and development process. Chao Mwatela, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director for the City of Rochester, and Kevin Bright, Director of Housing and Sustainability for the Destination Medical Center Economic Development Agency and City of Rochester, were both involved in the formation of Community Co-Design. In the past two years, 10 local community co-design pilots have been completed. The success of Community Co-Design has caught the eye of Bloomberg Philanthropies, which awarded the City of Rochester a million-dollar grant in the Global Mayor's Challenge for its work in Community Co-Design. For the second of three episodes on farming, I talk to Nate Looney about Jewish ethics, Diversity Equity and Inclusion and, yes, farming, specifically, his experience as an urban farmer using hydroponics and aquaponics to produce gourmet leafy greens and microgreens for restaurants and farmers markets in his hometown of L.A.Nate Looney has followed an unusual career path, from the U.S. National Guard to service in New Orleans and Iraq as a military police soldier to CEO and Owner of Westside Urban Gardens, an urban agricultural start-up based in L.A., to his current job as JEDI (“Jewish Equity Diversity and Inclusion”) Director of Community Safety and Belonging for the Jewish Federations of North America. As such, his thinking often moves across disciplines, linking practical matters to questions of ethics, combining his experience of farming with his knowledge of Jewish thought.

What is Critical Race Theory and what do advocates for inclusive education need to know about the Anti-CRT movement? Rowe Price and Robert W. Deutsch Foundations. In addition, she has played an instrumental role in the commissions Afro House has received from both local and regional theaters and the highly acclaimed choreographer Camille A. Brown. They discuss their Write on Race initiative that was born out of a Minnesota community wrestling with how to be better prepared for a racist incident - exactly like what we are experiencing right now. When LGBT children’s literature was first introduced, two moms or two dads were represented as being the typical LGBT family, doing traditional family-style activities. The family dynamic has changed significantly over time, and today’s LBGT family might look quite differently: single moms, single dads, aunts, and uncles raising kids, grandparents, adopted and foster families are all widely seen now. Most data available to youth is in middle school and high school, and any inclusive idea is if you introduce the concept of the various family dynamics early on when children get to those later grades, it’s no big deal. Just a family. Their family! Amanda and Vickie chat with special guest Wendy Evans, concerning a project very close to her heart. Please listen in! Wendy Evans is the Inclusion Director at A Child’s Place in Costa Mesa, an early childcare center. Wendy’s passion project is bringing more representation of LGBT children’s literature and LGBT 101 Training to early childhood centers. She is the liaison between the LGBT Center in Orange County and the Orange County Association for the Education of Young Children.   Show Highlights: The goal of LGBT early education is family representation and does not focus on safe sex or HIV. National Association of the Education of Young Children: their code of ethics is not participating in things that will harm children. By not bringing up LGBT families and discussing their world, you’re in effect harming them, and saying something is wrong with their family. The Rainbow and Human Rights Campaign are universal signs of LGBT-friendly and safe spaces where one might “out” themselves. LGBT 101 Training: LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender. Sometimes there will be a letter “Q” at the end, which stands for Queer, or Questioning. “Queer” used to be a derogatory term, but the youth have given it a new meaning. Getting caught up in labels. Episode 129 Interview Emma Houston: Your Fierceness-Own it! Live it! Welcome to the Love Your Story podcast. Today I’m talking with Emma Houston. I met her as I sat in the audience at a women’s empowerment weekend seminar. I loved her message, her spunk, her authentic energy and I wanted her to share with you the same things she shared with us in the audience that day. She is a thriver, a supporter, a victor, a mentor and a cheerleader for people going through life’s challenges. She’s a spunky little black woman, an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church, and the owner and CEO of Brighter Day Productions. Emma Houston Hails from Texas originally. In 2016 she was appointed as Diversity and Inclusion Director by mayor Ben McAdams for the Salt Lake County’s Office of Diversity Affairs, so she is obviously now in Utah. She is the former chairwoman of the Governor’s Office of Ethnic Affairs and former secretary for the YWCA Board and UAA Board. She is a cancer survivor and serves on the Huntsman Cancer Foundation Community Advisory Committee. She is also the chair for the Martin Luther King Commission.  She is passionate about sharing her skills and connections and working with communities.
