Jonathan Scott is one of the most original interpreters of the early modern world. How the Old World Ended: The Anglo-Dutch-American Revolution, 1500-1800 (Yale University Press, 2019) is a deft and cogent synthesis in which Scott returns to the turbulent seventeenth century in Britain, and examines how a period of political upheaval in its middle decade laid the foundations for a process of state-formation across the Anglo-Dutch-American world. While it tracks across the familiar ground of revolution, empire, commerce, and republicanism, this is a book with broad horizons. It is about movement, water, the interchange of ideas, peoples, and cultures. At its centre is the Anglo-Dutch relationship and, at its many peripheries, Scott reveals the transformative effects of this unique republican pulse. Jonathan Scott is Professor of History at the University of Auckland, and the author of seminal studies of the early modern British world, Commonwealth Principles: Republican Writing of the English Revolution (2004), and When the Waves Ruled Britannia: Geography and Political Identities, 1500-1800 (2011). Charles Prior is Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of Hull (UK), who has written on the politics of religion in early modern Britain, and whose work has recently expanded to the intersection of colonial, indigenous, and imperial politics in early America. We are once again chatting with another creator I was lucky enough to meet at Baltimore Comic-Con. Please welcome the Founder and Creative Director of Odyssey Comics Marcus McNeal. Odyssey Comics focuses on publishing "the best damn creator-owned comics in the galaxy." Marcus discusses his love of comics and how that led him to not just creating comics but publishing them as well. We talk about some past (and your future) favorites like What We Did When the World Ended and the current Kickstarter campaign for Faelyn Wood #1-2 which runs until December 12th. Marcus discusses Odyssey's open submission policy and hints at some future projects. This was a great conversation and interesting glimpse into indie publishing. Marcus was extremely generous with his time and insight. Give it a listen and be sure to check out all the great comics Odyssey has to offer. Make sure to check out our friends over at Sanity Damage. Genesis 7 records the worldwide catastrophic Flood in the days of Noah. The details of Scripture indicate that this was no ordinary/local flood. This was a universal Flood that destroyed the earth's population. The only exceptions were Noah's family and the animals that the LORD brought to him to care for.

In the spring of 1902, Mt Pelée, a volcano on the Caribbean island of Martinique, began behaving a little strangely. First, there was the overwhelming stink of sulpher. Then, steam eruptions became visible, and ash began to fall. Next were snake attacks, mudslides, flash floods, tsunamis, and smallpox. At the foot of the volcano, in the town of St Pierre, people were torn between evacution ... and voting in the upcoming election, in which Progressive and Radical candidates were facing off for a seat in French Parliment. On this episode, we're getting into why politics and volcanoes should never mix. Hello welcome back to SWWE. This week we discuss candy mints, or Bit-Mint. Sometimes the most ordinary things in the world are pulled off shelves for their ingredients. This happened to Certs Mints in 2018 for its inclusion of partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil. That doesn't keep Certs addicts from that mint, though. There are hundreds of listings for expired Certs across the Web, averaging out at $25/roll sold. Certs Mints are hot. This episode, we break it all down into the Mint-Haves and the Mint-Nots. We also discusses the Ukraine crisis, and before the world ends over that, provide a useful tutorial on how to use a Drawmer Noise Gate along with a Trapezoid Envelope Generator. Out of all the conspiracy theories we've done, this is by far the best one. Consider that the world as we knew it ended in 2012; it's plausible. We're 8+ years from the end times the Mayans predicted of December 21, 2012, and if you told 2012 you some of things that have happened since then...would you believe yourself? Like, really? I don't think I could. In this episode we discuss five great theories:Astrophysical phenomena caused the end times. The discovery of the Higgs Boson, or God Particle, by CERN led to the end of our universe as we know it.There was a reality changing event.2012 was the end of history as we know itAnd the god damn Mayans were right all along.Matt and I go in-depth on all of these, which definitely left me with the Larry David face of, well....eh...it could happen.
The letters begin with various greetings. “Dear 50 year of age self.” “To my future children.” “Dear future me, It's me, I mean you, but circa 2020.” These are the words of a group of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill undergraduates who processed the reality of a pandemic-dominated year through letters to the future as a class assignment this spring.

Discussion with Lakota author, actor, storyteller, wilderness survivalist, and bowmaker, Joseph Marshall III. Through plenty of wit, humor, and masterful storytelling, Joseph regales us with many tales. Joseph tells us about growing up on the banks of the Little White River on the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota, detailing many lessons learned from his grandparents who raised him in the traditional ways of the Lakota. We learn a brief history about the Lakota and their relationship with the land in coexisting with nature instead of trying to conquer it. Joseph describes the role of the traditional storyteller and we discuss the beauty and integrity of oral tradition and how it compares to the written tradition. We learn about the Lakota perspective of accepting the natural world for what it is and living within that understanding as one creature among many. Joseph explains how all of us can help honor and protect indigenous rights and ways of being through proper learning and awareness of indigenous peoples. Joseph shares his experience and love of the skills of wilderness survival and offers stories and philosophical perspectives behind the quintessential Native American weapon and tool, the bow and arrow. Finally, we are advised by Joseph on ways we can reconnect with the natural world right where we are.“Man's heart away from nature becomes hard” –Luther Standing BearContact for Josephjmarichale@gmail.comBooks by Joseph:To You We Shall ReturnThe Lakota Way: Stories and Lessons for LivingThe Journey of Crazy Horse: A Lakota HistoryKeep Going: The Art of PerseveranceThe Day the World Ended at Little Big Hornand more on Joseph's Amazon Author PageBook RecommendationsGod is Red: A Native View of ReligionAny book by Roger WelschLast of the Breed
