A massive dragon flew overhead, blocking out the sun momentarily and its sheer presence struck fear into the hearts of nearly everyone present, forcing them to panic and flee. After a bit of time, the heroes came back to their senses, but something changed in the Bakali. They began arguing with Snapjaw, and when they arrived at a river checkpoint, Snapjaw was taken by the Bakali guards. K'thriss and Elemier confronted the guards and tried to convince them to help. Bakali agreed but no one saw Snapjaw again. THey arrived at the Citadel of Karoc-Tor to find a massive encampment outside its walls. On one side the Bullywugs and on the other Bakali. The cult seems to be running things but the grunt work is completed by these two groups. With the appearance of a dragon, it has set everyone on edge. They send word back to Leosin Erlanthar, their Legion of Steele Akroatis or scout captain, then head toward the long houses. As Elemier tries to understand who is in charge of the Citadel when Rezmir is absent, the Bakali seem to ignore the question. There seems to be something off. They are led into the Citadel by Jamna and Garrith appearing as Bakali and are met inside by guards who show them to a room for recruits. After clearing it out they awoke cultists who were killed. Lucan feels pulled in the direction of the store room by Mishakal, and discovers Elemier in the storeroom and the heroes finishing up combat with Bakali in the Strong Room! Jamna leans in as they are talking and lets them know that they need to get out of there before they all return. Turns out there is a secret tunnel! They follow it out and into the jungle, following a marked trail. After a day of traveling deeper into the jungle, they ran across some natural dangers, a shambling mound, and even quicksand before arriving at what seems to be a deserted camp. As they were investigating the camp, Bakali arrived and engaged in combat. The heroes plowed through them, and captured one. They discussed the area and their aversion to the cult, when the Bakali thought perhaps these heroes could assist his people in liberating themselves from the cultists. They end up working together and Snapjaw, the Bakali leader of sorts, leads the heroes toward the Citadel of Karac-Tor. En route they were attacked by more crocodiles than they have ever seen in person, it seems the swamp itself is trying to stop them. Will the heroes snake it out of the swamp alive? At this point it seems the cult is ready to blame anyone for the death of their member even if it means manufacturing a reason. The heroes negotiate a solution to have her brought to Gander and turned over to the authorities. They make their way on this last leg of the trip and aside from regular road hazards and inclement weather, make it to Gander, finally. They let Elowyn go and she decides to head for the Temple of Paladine in Palanthas. The heroes meet up with Jamna and are all introduced to Seto. They decide to work together as they all are trying to discover more about the Cult and what they are planning with the stolen loot. The Cult's wagons are going to be headed East, and the heroes learn of Lord Winterholm starting a building campaign to rebuild the road from Winterholm to Gander. Construction is already underway and the heroes join up with the High Road Charter Company. They are ambushed on the way to Carnath House, the drop off point for tradesmen and supplies for the construction, and overcome the Bullywug's. Once at the roadhouse they realize some of the crates, specifically the cults’ loot crates are being stored in a secured area. The heroes deal with one furious cultist who calls out Gunner and as tensions are high, Bog Luck, the half-ogre who runs the construction effort, suggested Gunner retire to his room rather than have the cultists kill him. As Soto and Garrick discover a secret portal in the secure room, Bakali erupts from within. The heroes all come to help fight off the Bakali, but with the sounds of battle evident and the already high tension with the cultists, what will the heroes do? Then inadvertently wake an Ettin as Li'High communicates from the cliff that she wants K'thriss to join her. He tries to talk her down when another voice declares ownership of Li'High, and she disappears. The heroes do their best to track her to no avail. They decide to return and bury the corpse of Boros. Back at the caravan, Gunner notices one of the cultists recognizes him, and then points to a bracelet that a child has. Seemingly trying to start a problem, the cultists were let down as the heroes politely reclaim the bracelet and pay the travelers for it. That night, the cultists try to kill the party, but K'thriss informs on them, and the heroes overcome them. This does, however, create a problem. If they are known to be in the caravan still, the cultists might continue assassination attempts, alternatively, it also may blow up K'thriss' position. They decide to stay out of the caravan and follow to Witdel. Now at the town, a new hero joins the caravan, a Kagonesti paladin, a female gnome, and a male human with red tattoos he seems to be covering up on his head. This human joins the cultists caravan, and the gnome Jamna Gleamsilver offers to work with the heroes and the new Paladin, then a dead cultist body is found and the caravan, now under way to the next destination, is once again, in an upheaval. Shortly thereafter, a Niedar dwarf named Francis offers to buy the bracelet and the heroes become very suspicious, interrogating and taunting him. He ends up leaving and approaches Gunner offering to buy it one last time, and when rejected, he moves on. Later that day a mysterious fire is started as Boros quickly puts it out. The heroes begin to grow suspicious, as if there is a connection between the dwarf, the cultists and the fire. The next morning Gunner discovers his bracelet missing, and they immediately grow suspicious that it must be the dwarf. They make a plan to confront him, but instead, Li'High reveals she took one of the parcels that fell out of the crashed caravan a week back and opening it reveals a necklace. They offer it to the dwarf, but he is not trusting of the heroes after the way they treated him, and increasingly as they continue to pester him. Li'High leaves into the wilderness by herself and renounces her god Habbakuk, desiring to worship Chemosh, but not knowing how to make the connection with the new god while she is on the road, and inadvertently is connected by Morgion. She rebukes him, and they all continue to a roadhouse where they eat. Some local adventurers are hired to guard their old wagon in the caravan. They search some of the wagons and mark the cultist wagons for future reference, then they continue on for a few days ending up in a brutally cold rainstorm. They arrive at another road house only to be turned away, and the hired adventurers refuse to help. Li'High breaks into the upper level and is contacted by Morgion again, and this time accepts. He creates a half-cask of diseased ale which is unable to be refused. Upon touching it, she contracts the fatal disease but is protected as an agent of Morgion. She murders the people in the inn, then sets it on fire. While it’s burning she steals food from the inn, tossing it to Boros who contracts the same disease and dies with his friends watching, too afraid to approach and help him, believing they were helpless. Li'High flees into the wilderness, consumed by sorrow and an unwilling agent of Morgion. Floki leads Caradoc, Jorgrim, and new halfling monk Chaz to go investigate the disappearance of dwarven monk leader Gorya Bronzevow, but on the way there, they stop to eradicate the growing ankheg problem at the Old Sycamore. Tragedy strikes as the mama ankheg burrows right up to Floki and crits on him, one-shotting him into unconsciousness, and finishing the job with its mandibles. Their leader fallen, the rest of the group scrambles to defeat the ankhegs. They divert to take Floki's body to the Temple of Dumathoin, where Umgurn drains the temple treasury to set out for Secomber to get him raised. Now joined by Eaglebane, they explore northward, encountering some giant lizards and a friendly centaur named Neigh-than, as well as the Zhentarim adventurers and their goblin allies. The party discovers an old Uthgardt cairn and a dragon-shaped barrow. Inside the barrow, Caradoc awakens a loyal skeletal horse and gets attacked by a will-o-wisp. The party flees back to the surface where the wisp is defeated, and they take the road back to Oleg's Trading Post where it all began.
You walk into the tavern. Your sword and shield clinking together as you walk makes everyone in the tavern turn and look at you. Being somewhat new to this you try and act tough and scowl at everyone. It doesn't come off well and you look sort of foolish. You walk over to the bar and wait patiently for the bartender to come talk to you and ask you what you want to drink. He doesn't. Instead he serves all the other patrons who keep shouting at him. “It seems the squeaky wheel does get the grease,” you mutter under your breath. You raise your hand and shout at the bartender and finally he comes over. He's a large half-orc fellow who looks like he's no stranger to a brawl. “Heyo, what'll it be?” He asks with a quizzical eye at your armor and clothing. You brush it off and say, “A simple ale please, and I was wondering if you could give me some direction?” The bartender stops and gives you more of his full attention. “Yeah? What did you need?” “Well, I'm looking for sort of a group of companions. Do you know any mercenary groups that are open to a new member?” The half-orc smiles and says, “you must be new to this whole adventuring thing. Well these groups don't just accept complete strangers in. You'll have to prove yourself and they don't really go about looking for new compatriots. Now, with that in mind,” and he turns you to look at the rest of the tavern, “over in that corner, yeah those dark elves, they are the Right Harvesters. They're a group of crow come up from the Underdark seeking the quell those who follow any demon or devil. Bunch of rightoues pricks you ask me. Over there with the ogre, they're the Blade Speakers. Mostly just ruffians and vagabonda really. Lastly, the group to your left here are the Whisper Wraiths. They're tied up with the Zhentarim pretty tight. So adventurer, here's your drink and I'm mighty curious what you're going to do.” So what would you like to do? Welcome back to How to Be a Better DM. Today, let's talk about one of the first things that you'll do as a DM- finding your D&D group. This is going to be my hypothetical list for what I'd do if I wanted to find players for my D&D campaign. You might try different things, but this is what I would do first. Ask friends and familyThe first thing I do when starting a D&D campaign is ask my friends and family. For me personally, I try to start with my family just to build that relationship better but that's just me. I also don't just ask friends who I know would be interested. I ask any friend because D&D is a great way to build friendships. I've also been highly surprised at the people who've said yes and have even been extremely excited to try D&D. You just gotta ask. I think this is the best place to start because D&D can turn an acquaintance into a friend and a good relationship into a great one. Often D&D sessions turn into much more. Ask Friends and Family for ReferralsEvery single one of your friends has friends who are not your friends. What better way to meet someone who might like the same types of things you like than by asking someone who likes the same types of things that you like? “But I don't really want to meet new people…” I get it. We're all introverts and we're all extroverts and we all like staying home and binging Netflix and we all like going out and partying. Sometimes you don't want to meet new people, but sometimes you don't want to be lonely. The fact of the matter is that you do have to put yourself out there, especially as a DM.
