The three discuss whether DEI initiatives are in fact valuable and how the world will look without them, why universities honor people whose voices they've previously tried to silence, and how best to navigate a world that was not built for us. Can the three collectively imagine a better world order? Learn more about your ad choices.

Malazgirt'in bir ruhu vardır. Alparslan o ruhun hadimidir. Kendinden kat be kat fazla olan Diyojen komutasındaki Bizans ordusuna galebe çalan ruhu bilmek gerekir. AK Parti'nin ruhu da işte o ruhtur. Alparslan'ların Selahaddin'lerin Erdoğan'ların ruhu aynı ruhtur. O ruh yoksa biz de yokuz. Bizi biz yapan ruh asıl o ruhtur. İslamiyet'in akidesidir, değerleridir, idealleridir, geleneğidir.

Hepsine ecirde bereket niyaz ediyorum.
Biz Sana muhtacız; bize istediklerimizi ver; ibadet etmekten aciziz, bize kudret ver. Yani her yerde, her zaman muhabbetle mükellefiyet beraber yürüyecek. Kur'an Âdem oğlunun henüz daha Adem yaratılmamışken ilahi renklere boyandığından bahseder.

When it comes to technology, we're often presented with two contrasting visions of the future: one where technology fulfills all our desires, and another where it leads to chaos and conflict. Sociologist Ruha Benjamin is here with a more radical vision of the future — one where humanity isn't saved or slayed by technology, but rather uses it to uplift ordinary people and make things like health care and housing for all a reality. After the talk, Sherrell expands on how tech improves individual lives, and communities at large.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
According to Ruha Benjamin, we're living inside someone else's imagination. An imagination that limits our ability to build a more just, liberated world. So, how do we take back our agency and begin to seed something different? Baratunde talks with Princeton professor and founding director of the Just Data Lab, Ruha Benjamin to find out. SHOW ACTIONS Internally Reflect - Bear witness and create a ripple This one is inspired from Ruha's book Viral Justice: How We Grow the World We Want which says: “…bear witness to the weight of individual and communal protective acts and consider how all of us can be involved in sheltering one another from the rain and sun by cultivating relationships, skills, accountability, and healing.” Think about when you witnessed someone near you perform an act of justice or kindness or protection for another. Was it a big or small act? Did it require courage? How did witnessing that make you feel about the world? Is it something you could repeat and further the impact? Become More Informed - Learn about racial justice Ruha recommends Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto by Tricia Hersey and The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander both of which you can find on our Bookshop page. There are two guests on this special January 2023 fundraising episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. ***Your generosity and support help to sustain the podcast and to keep it free, not behind a paywall and available to all listeners.*** Ruha Benjamin is a sociologist and a Professor in the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University. She is the author of several books including Race After Technology and Viral Justice: How We Grow the World We Want. She explains how technology is not socially or politically neutral and actually does the work of power and maintaining inequality along the color line through what she has termed “the new Jim Code”. Benjamin also highlights the ways that technologies such as search engines, algorithms, “big data”, the surveillance society and other digital tools have disproportionately negative impacts on black and brown and other marginalized communities. She also encourages us to take back our agency by finding ways to use these new technologies to do the work of creating a more humane and just society. Christoph Bartneck is an associate professor in the department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Canterbury where his research focuses on human-computer interaction, science and technology Studies, and visual design. He explains how racism and other forms of animus influence how human beings treat “black” and “brown” robots much worse than “white” robots. Bartneck also reflects on the human-machine interface and how algorithms and other technologies inevitably reflect the biases of their designers, engineers, and programmers. He also shares his thoughts on artificial intelligence, “the Singularity”, and the exaggerated and fantastical claims that are made by many futurists and technologists. On this episode of the podcast, Chauncey DeVega honors two people who recently passed away and who meant, albeit in very different ways, a great deal to him. Professional wrestling star and ROH World Tag Team Champion “Jay Briscoe” (Jamin Dale Pugh) was killed in a car accident on Tuesday Jan 17 in Laurel, Delaware. Chauncey's cat nephew Stoli passed away last week on Monday Jan 23. Episode 378 of The Chauncey DeVega Show is dedicated to both of their memories. Chauncey reflects on grieving, emotional ups and down, and how he is being weathered and assaulted by dark and other unjust forces during these last two weeks – and how he will overcome them and get his bounce back. As part of that effort Chauncey shares an animal friend story about a turkey person who is being unfairly maligned and harassed by the humans in her neighborhood. WHERE CAN YOU FIND ME? I am so thrilled and honored to be in conversation with Ruha Benjamin, a Professor of African American studies at Princeton University, founding director of the Ida B. Wells JUST Data Lab and author of three books, Viral Justice (2022), Race After Technology (2019), and People's Science (2013), and editor of Captivating Technology (2019). Today, we discuss her incredible latest book, Viral Justice: How We Grow the World We Want. I am completely obsessed with this book. I feel it is an urgent read for all of us who want to integrate the structural and the individual, the academic and the poetic, the political and the personal, knowing that each of these things are necessarily interlinked and interdependent: just like us. Ruha writes, teaches, and speaks widely about the relationship between innovation and inequity, knowledge and power, race and citizenship, health and justice. Long before the pandemic, she was doing groundbreaking research on race, technology, and justice, focusing on big, structural changes. But the twin plagues of COVID-19 and anti-Black police violence inspired her to rethink the importance of small, individual actions. “Remember to imagine and craft the worlds you cannot live without, just as you dismantle the ones you cannot live within." — Ruha BenjaminI hope you enjoy our conversation!Highlights:(01:20) Get to Know Ruha Benjamin(02:51 ) What is viral justice?(04:45) The three types of plotting(09:44) Ruha's journey shaping this work(22:40) How can we be vulnerable but not exposed?(27:38) The power of poetry(36:16) Mutual aid and other life forms (41:20) The Doula Effect and how we can bring it to our daily livesRuha's Links:Website:https://www.ruhabenjamin.com/ Instagram:Ruha Benjamin (@ruha9)Twitter:Ruha Benjamin (@ruha9)LinkTree to all her work: https://linktr.ee/ruhabenjamin Links Mentioned:Viral Justice: How We Grow the World We Want by Ruha Benjamin Toni Cade BambaraMia Mingus blog & Twitter @miamingusErik Olin WrightMy links: Substack: ayandastood.substack.com | Subscribe to my newsletter!!! Small change can have a big impact on our lives. Through knock-on effects and cumulative action, little shifts have the potential for great harm and great good. And when it is easy to feel overwhelmed at the scale of change needed to solve big, structural problems, we need to recognise the value of practical change we can enact on a daily basis. In recent times, the twin plagues of Covid-19 and anti-Black police violence have caused Ruha Benjamin to rethink the importance of these every day, individual actions across our lives and societies - from the impact of the chronic stress of racism and inequities in our health care system to the power of community organisers who are fostering mutual aid and collective healing. Here at the RSA, Ruha Benjamin will demonstrate the impact of these micro-changes, drawing on her personal experience and professional research on race, technology, and justice. Alongside the chair of the discussion, Mandu Reid, leader of the Women's Equality Party, Ruha will offer an inspiring and practical vision of how seemingly minor decisions and habits can spread virally and have exponentially positive effects.#RSAviraljusticeBecome an RSA Events sponsor: https://utm.guru/udI9xDonate to The RSA: https://utm.guru/udNNBFollow RSA Events on Instagram: https://instagram.com/rsa_events/Follow the RSA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/RSAEventsLike RSA Events on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rsaeventsofficialJoin our Fellowship: https://www.thersa.org/fellowship/join
Can the choices you make on a daily basis transform society? Sociologist and Princeton professor Dr. Ruha Benjamin thinks so, and has the research to support the idea. Dr. Benjamin's groundbreaking research on race, technology, and justice spanned years and focused primarily on larger, structural changes. But the scourges of COVID-19 and anti-Black police violence inspired Dr. Benjamin to rethink the importance of small, individual actions. Her new book Viral Justice offers a sweeping, deeply personal exploration of how we can shape our world through the choices we make on a daily basis. Part memoir, part manifesto, Dr. Benjamin vividly recounts her personal experiences and those of her family, showing how decisions that might otherwise go unnoticed can have great impact — even on an exponential scale. Through stories about her father's premature death, her brother's experience with the criminal justice system, and her own challenges as a young mother navigating an inequitable healthcare system, Dr. Benjamin shines a light on both the devastating impacts of chronic racism and the passions and strengths of communities driven to demand justice. Born of a stubborn hopefulness, Viral Justice offers a powerful and practical vision of how small changes can add up to large ones, transforming people's relationships and communities while inspiring them to build a more just and joyful world. Ruha Benjamin is an internationally recognized writer, speaker, and professor of African American Studies at Princeton University, where she is the founding director of the Ida B. Wells Just Data Lab. She is the award-winning author of Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code and editor of Captivating Technology, among many other publications. Her work has been featured widely in the media, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN, The Root, and The Guardian. Vivian Phillips, Founder and President of the non-profit organization ARTE NOIR, is a communications professional and arts leader. Vivian's professional history includes service as the Director of Communications for a Seattle Mayor, Director of Marketing and Communications for Seattle Theatre Group, Seattle University Adjunct Professor (MFA Arts Leadership), television, radio, and live performance producing, public speaking, and numerous arts and strategic communications projects. She served as the Chair for both the Seattle Arts Commission and 4Culture, and co-founded The Hansberry Project and the Historic Central Area Arts and Cultural District. Jazmyn Scott, ARTE NOIR Executive Director, comes to Arte Noir as a long-time advisor and community organizer. For the past six years, she led programming and community partnerships for LANGSTON Seattle, where she was the organization's first employee. Her leadership at LANGSTON catalyzed the development of new programs that engaged a wide range of local and national performing artists. Jazmyn is also the co-curator of 50 NEXT: Seattle Hip-Hop Worldwide interactive experience, which includes music from Seattle and Northwest Hip-Hop artists displayed at the Museum of History and Industry. Jazmyn's community connections are extensive, and she currently serves as board vice president for Earshot Jazz and The Residency and sits on several community arts advisory boards. Viral Justice: How We Grow the World We Want (Hardcover) Third Place Books
Ruha Benjamin has been called one of the country's most insightful scholars on issues related to race, technology and justice. In her new book, Viral Justice, Benjamin explores—in a very personal way—two social issues that have received extensive attention over the past two years: police violence and the pandemic of COVID-19. For Prof. Benjamin, these two issues existed in tandem for a reason: they are both public health crises that festered and continue to fester because they are both built on unjust systems. Benjamin examines the converging plagues of COVID-19 and police violence, mapping the multiple routes through which racism gets under the skin. Recounting her personal experiences and those of her family, Benjamin illuminates the devastating impact of the chronic stress of racism, the trauma caused by mass imprisonment, and the vast inequities of our nation's health-care system. As she channels her own life story, she also offers a passionate, inspiring, and practical vision of how seemingly minor decisions and habits could spread virally and have exponentially positive effects. Join us as Professor Benjamin re-envisions the significance of individual actions and explains how we can build a more just world―one small change at a time. Snake bites and scorpion envenomation is a frequent occurrence worldwide. For people who just enjoy the outdoors and especially for medical providers, it is important to know the species of snakes, scorpions and other venomous creatures that inhabit your area. In this episode, self-appointed “snake guy” Stephen P. Wood discusses snakes and scorpions with emergency medical doctor and toxicologist Michelle Ruha. Dr Ruha discusses some of the more important snake species in the United States, as well as some of the pathophysiology and toxicology associated with these snakes. She discusses some of the important principles of management, as well as some myths around some treatment modalities. Scorpions are next on the agenda and Stephen proposes a possible movie feature called “Scorpions on the Plane.” The conversation leads to monsters, specifically the Gila Monster and an unlikely case of Gila monster envenomation, including management and treatment.
