Justin and Ty delve into the biggest movement of British on American soil since the war of 1812. This time they didn't bring muskets and bayonets, they brought electric guitars and flowers instead! This invasion was a welcome one to be sure! Several big British rock bands had attempted the invasion before, and were quashed by American indifference. But John Lennon and the Beatles refused to go to America until they had a #1 hit there first. "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" topped the charts and so the Fab Four boarded a plane and landed to throngs from a manic crowd eager to devour their sounds. The Beatles were followed by several other great beloved bands like the Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Herman's Hermits, and Them. There has never been a music revolution of that magnitude since, though some movements have been great, like the grunge era. Justin adores the music from the British invasion, and regardless of where Ty stands with his personal taste, he has to admit that he respects the significance of the music from this era of history. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/about-what/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/about-what/support

Fate would have it that she forgot her purse in the car with her keys in it. She dropped off her boutonniere from the wedding, and the bride's bouquet that she caught on the front porch and started running after the departing car, but she never caught up with it. She was found strangled to death face down a block down the street from her house with her skirt torn and one of her stockings tied around her throat. But who murdered her? Ty and Justin discuss a short-lived, but extremely famous rock artist that embodied the 1960's hippie culture the way Courtney Love embodied the grunge culture of the Nirvana 90's. We are speaking of the famous Janis Joplin, a member of the 27 club along side Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and Kurt Cobain, speaking of Nirvana. Special thanks to John from New York for requesting this topic. Mrs. Joplin had a face for radio, but in Ty's opinion, not a voice for radio. Janis got her real start at the Monterey Pop Music Festival which we discussed a few episodes ago, and by the time Woodstock came around she was a household name among those who attended due to her recognizable raspy voice and mix of blues, folk, country and rock n' roll style that is so commonplace now, but really it was Mrs. Joplin that created it. Ty may not be a big fan of Janis, but no argument can be made that she wasn't an iconic person that accomplished much more in her 27 years, than Ty has in twice that amount of time. Pour a little out of a bottle of Southern Comfort for Janis Joplin, then down the rest of the bottle Janis Joplin style, and if you don't die from that, sit back and enjoy this episode. But seriously, drink responsibly, and seek medical attention if you make poor choices. It's an awesome theory, with a little more evidence to support it than scientology has, but is it really true? Is it even possible? Or is there a better explanation why there are old buildings erected with amazing architecture reminiscent of the great cathedrals of Europe? There are plenty of more adult-oriented or darker/broodier bands that kids will dance to as well, but the Beach Boys seem to be one of the only bands that are all about having a good time all the time, nothing but pure fun when boys discover girls and girls discover boys. Let someone else take it after the first heart breaks, or unexpected teen pregnancy, but until that time comes, let the Beach Boys blast on the stereo of your little Deuce Coupe, throw your arm around Barbara-Ann, and cruise through Salt Lake City on your way to a Surfin' Safari. Listener Janice wrote in about growing up in Riverside and going with some friends to the Sunset Strip in her teens at the height of the 1960's. Green with envy, Justin and Ty discuss the significance of the Sunset Strip and the music and culture that came from it. But it didn't last. They get quickly side-tracked and go on a wild ride through Hollywood, Montana, and the great beyond. Oh, you poor listeners! This week's episode was difficult to do. We watched an abomination of a movie from 1963 based on the classic novel "Lord of the Flies". Luckily, Justin and Ty are both healthy, but some of our loved ones have caught covid, and one of Ty's good friends passed away due to the illness the day of this recording. Lucky for him, he won't ever have to watch this terrible movie, and you won't either, thanks to Justin and Ty suffering through it for you. Sit back and listen to the cautionary tale of what happens when a plane full of average British schoolboys crash on a South Pacific island. Spoiler Alert: They turn feral within about 2 days, and are on the brink of losing language and any semblance of civilization by the end of a week. 2,500 years of building castles, bridges, Magna Carta, Old Bailey, and William Shakespeare get flushed down the water closet in less than a week. Kyrie Elaison= Lord Have Mercy, indeed! October 1962 was one of the most tense moments in history for 2 weeks when JFK and Khrushchev negotiated their way to peace through circumstances that almost obliterated the planet. All of this over a little sliver of an island in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico? The Cuban Missile Crisis shaped the relationship between the USA and USSR. Looking back, it was probably a good thing for the United States to be taken down a notch. It also established a policy that before destroying each other, the two super powers would call each other up and try negotiating diplomatically before lobbing nukes at each other. Did it lead to the deaths of the Kennedy brothers? Did it drive the CIA and Military Heads to murder? Who knows? But it certainly was a significant moment in world history. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/about-what/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/about-what/support

Welcome to our first Cinema of the Sixties Movie Night! We start off with the first of the Spaghetti Westerns: Fistful of Dollars starring Clint Eastwood and directed by Sergio Leone. This movie is a hard break from the honorable heroes of the 1950's when cowboys were like Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, John Wayne, and even Howdy Doody! Those heroic cowboys could do no wrong, they were the contemporary virtuous knights in shining spurs that always triumphed over evil and rescued the damsels in distress. The man with no name in the Spaghetti Westerns is not so virtuous, not at all noble, but still a hero worth rooting for nonetheless. As the world grew up and faced the hard realities of adult life, so did westerns and many other movies too. If you want to hear us discuss other movies from the 60's, or about the 60's, let us know! Justin and Ty discuss the events that led up to the shooting of a protesting crowd at Kent State University in Ohio May 4, 1970. 4 people died, and 9 more were wounded by the National Guard who came to put down a protest that had already burned the ROTC building on campus and was no longer a peaceful protest as people threw rocks because they didn't want to send any more people to die in Southeast Asia for people that they had nothing to do with.  It was a very sad day, but it taught us a lot of lessons and drew some strange parallels with other events from history, like the Boston Massacre, the battle of Lexington and Concord, even Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter have a familiar echo of what happened at Kent State University.  This episode discusses a lot of adult themes including violence. The Rolling Stones threw together a last minute concert at a speedway in the middle of California.  Even at short notice, they drew a crowd of 300,000 people.  And most of those fans enjoyed a wonderful concert, except for those closest to the stage who were tripping on bad drugs and caught between the excited people behind them, and the Hell's Angels who were hired to guard the stage.  The party got so rowdy that The Grateful Dead decided to leave just before they were supposed to go on stage. 4 people died, 3 by accident, and one by what the court ruled as self-defense, and 4 babies were born that night, but it was also the death of an era, and the birth of something else.  Thanks to mixkit for the use of their song Out of This World in this podcast. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/about-what/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/about-what/support
