Top 3 Ways To Relieve Back Pain During Pregnancy

With all the joys of a new baby, one not-so-enjoyable experience that comes along with pregnancy, is back pain. In this video, Dr. Brad Wolf explains the Top 3 Ways To Relieve Back Pain During Pregnancy. The biggest thing to understand about back pain and pregnancy is that, as your baby grows, your body begins to have an imbalanced distribution of weight. This extra weight can make you want to arch your back more than usual. It is important to keep your body in the most upright and vertical position possible, throughout your pregnancy. When standing up, to give your back some relief, you can place your body into “anatomical rest position.” You can do this by standing 6” away from a wall or flat surface, and placing your buttocks, shoulders and head flat to the wall. This can also be done sitting down as well, by placing your back against a flat surface. Using tools to give your body support can also help to relieve your back pain during pregnancy. When a woman is pregnant her body releases a hormone called relaxin, which relaxes the ligaments around the lower back and pelvic area. Belly belts or pregnancy belts help support this area as your baby grows, and can relieve some of the pressure and pain. Other tools that can help give your body support include lumbar pillows and sitting wedges. The third way you can relieve back pain during pregnancy is to do start early in your pregnancy doing regular strength oriented exercises (such as core and leg exercises) that will give your body the support it needs to carry the weight of your baby. Other movement exercises like the cat stretch and child’s pose can help expand your pelvic tilt and take pressure off your lower back, ultimately relieving your back pain. When beginning to manage your back pain during pregnancy, you want to make sure you’re managing your day-to-day movements, positioning, and activities, and doing what you can to make yourself comfortable. Watch this video to learn more about the Top 3 Ways To Relieve Back Pain During Pregnancy, and have the best pregnancy possible!

    What Are Herniated Disc Symptoms

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 8, 2018 3:54

Think you might have a herniated disc? In this video, Dr. Brad Wolf dives into what the symptoms of a herniated disc are. To understand what the symptoms of a herniated disc are, we must first know about the disc. The disk is comprised of the nucleus and the annulus. Overtime, the thickness of the disc begins to shrink as a natural process; but what happens with a herniation, is the disc itself becomes damaged and begins to tear from the inside out. As it tears, the center of the disc pushes out towards the wall of the disc. If there are nerves nearby this site, the disc will begin to put pressure on the nerve. As the disc begins to protrude and put pressure on nerves, a number of things can happen to that nerve. It can be stretched, twisted, or compressed, and once nerves are affected or irritated, your body can experience the effects in the form of pain, tingling, numbness, weakness, and other symptoms in various parts of the body. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms in your arms or legs, it could be an indicator of a herniated disc. To find out if you have a herniation, the best step to take is to get a MRI to see if there is any protrusion in the spine and on the discs. When you understand what condition you have, it becomes much easier to treat it. Watch this video to learn more about the symptoms of a herniated disc!

In this video, Dr. Brad Wolf goes over the Spine’s Anatomy to help us better understand how to care for the body. The spine consists of many parts that work together to allow it to move as well as send messages from our brain to the rest of the body. The first components that make up the spine are the bones, discs, and branching nerves. These nerves are connected to the spinal cord, which runs down the middle of the spine and is responsible for sending messages from the brain, through the spine, and to the rest of the body. Ligaments are responsible for holding the spine together. The bumps on the backside of the spine is called the Spinous Process All parts of the spine are interlocked and function together, allowing the body to move and other body parts to receive messages from the brain correctly. By understanding the anatomy of the spine and the importance of each component, we can better understand how we can take care of the body for the rest of our lives. Watch this video to learn more about the spines anatomy and the importance of each component, so that you can start taking care of your spine properly!

Top 3 Causes For Numbness In Your Fingers

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 8, 2018 5:22

Have you experienced numbness in your fingers? You may have something more going on within the body than you think… Dr. Brad explains the Top 3 reasons you might have numbness in your hands and fingers. Numbness is one of the four primary signs of nerve irritation ( Pain, Numbness, tingling, weakness). This nerve irritation can occur in the wrist and hand, but more often than not, the problem can be traced further up in the nervous system–at the elbow, shoulder, or even at the neck. The base of the neck is more prone to injury than other parts of the body. With the head weighing 10-15lbs and sitting on the neck, improper posture puts pressure on the nerves at the base of the neck, and can cause a quicker degeneration in this area. Degeneration and pressure or irritation of nerves can lead to numbness in the hands and fingers. Continuous pressure from consistent bad posture can cause lasting injuries if left uncorrected. It is important to consider your posture and placement of your head in relation to your shoulders, when experiencing tingling in your hands. Other conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and more serious conditions that cause a biochemical change in the body (such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis) can also lead to numbness in the hands and fingers. Watch this video to learn more from Dr. Brad Wolf, about the Top 3 Reasons For Numbness In Your Fingers, and how you can get rid of this symptom!

Are you sitting at your desk all wrong? If you are consistently working at a desk and sitting for long periods of time, … after days, weeks, and months, it will take a toll on your body, if you aren’t doing it properly. In this video, Dr. Brad Wolf goes over 4 things you can do while working at a desk to make sure you’re taking care of your body. Begin to be aware of your posture at your desk, especially if you tend to slouch. In the moment, slouching might not seem like it has much effect on your body. Yet over time, if you are consistently in a slouching position, you may experience problems in your body from repetitive bad habits. The second thing is to incorporate exercise into your workday. Many people set aside specific time to exercise, before, during or after work. By incorporating simple exercises into your workday, you can accomplish the equivalent of a full workout by the time your workday is finished! By taking just 2-5 minutes out of every hour to do different exercises during your workday, (on top of your normal workout routine), you can combat the wear-and-tear that impacts your body while sitting at a desk for long periods of time. Another general guideline to follow while in an office setting is: Sit, Stand, Move. Our bodies are meant to move and suffer when were in one position for too long. By bringing movement into your day, in combination with sitting and/or standing at your desk, your body can stay healthier and more active while helping to avoid stiffness, pain and injury. The last guideline to follow, is to be proactive in taking care of your body by preparing it. We prepare our body with strengthening exercises–working on your core, legs, and other body parts. With better preparation, the body will be able to endure sitting for long periods of time. Watch this video to learn how you might be sitting at your desk wrong, and the 4 things you can do about it!

    How To Handle Back Injuries

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 8, 2018 5:47

In this video, Dr. Brad Wolf discusses how to handle back injuries, so that you can live your best life possible. To understand how to handle your back injuries, you must first understand the body’s need for symmetry. Though the body is not perfectly symmetrical, we want our body’s to have as much symmetry as possible. When someone has a back injury, imbalances and structural asymmetries start to occur in the body, which can worsen your condition if not corrected. By positioning the body where it has the most balance and symmetry as possible, we can begin to relieve pressure being placed on the back injuries. Be aware of not overarching your back, or rounding in a slouch, and be sure to correct your posture to start to relieve the pressure that can build up from back injuries. Once the positioning of the back is addressed, you want to give support to the lower back and bring down the inflammation. Back braces can help give support to the lower back, but should not be relied on for long-term fixes. Ice packs are another tool you can use, that will help to bring down the inflammation around the injury. As you get the support your back needs and the inflammation around the injury down, you want to begin to track your movements. Be aware of any activity or position in which you may not be moving your body in a balanced, symmetrical way. Begin to work towards moving your body in a more balanced and symmetrical manner. By improving your body symmetry, giving your back the support it needs, bringing the inflammation down, and tracking your body’s movements, you can begin to heal your back injury. Follow along with Dr. Brad Wolf as he explains how to handle your back injury so that you can work towards healing your back injury and living your best life possible!

The Dangers Of Spinal Fusion Surgery

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 8, 2018 8:27

What is spinal fusion surgery and why is it dangerous? As with many surgeries, spinal fusion surgery comes with many consequences. In this video, Dr. Brad Wolf explains what spinal fusion surgery is, and why it should only be considered as a last resort. The spine consists of 24 moveable bones (vertebrae) that are joined together by discs that lie between the bones. These discs allow the spine to move and bend. There is a degenerative process that happens in our spine as we age and partake in different activities throughout our life. This has an impact on how well our bodies function. If the spine goes through this degenerative process at a quicker rate than normal, due to accidents and injuries, bad posture and poor lifestyle choices, these larger spinal damages can result in requiring spinal fusion surgery as the spine degenerates over time. When spinal fusion surgery is performed, the disc between the damaged spine is taken out, and the bones are then fused together and secured by a metal rod and screws. As you can imagine, fusing the bones together decreases the mobility of the spine. Spinal fusion surgery reduces potential future treatment options, once performed, and must be managed for the rest of your life. Spinal fusion surgery is permanent. There are things you can do now, to help preserve your spine and prevent you from spinal fusion surgery in the future. By being aware of what is causing wear-and-tear on your spine and discs, you can reduce the degeneration and begin to reestablish the proper mechanics of your spine. Watch this video to learn more about the dangers of spinal fusion surgery, and what you can do to prevent having it down the road!

How To Get Rid Of Numbing And Tingling In Your Arms

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 8, 2018 7:36

Are you experiencing numbing and tingling in your arms? In this video, Dr. Brad Wolf discusses the root problem and what you can do to get rid of these symptoms in your arms. Numbness or tingling in your arms can be traced back to your nerve system – this happens when your nerves are irritated, stretched or compressed. The nerves that travel to your arms begin at the base of the neck and travel all the way to your hands. Damage here can put pressure on the nerves exiting the spine and can cause tingling, numbness, pain, burning and other symptoms in the arms and hands. By improving your spinal architecture, you can position your body in a more upright posture with the center of your ears over your shoulders. This will reduce the effect of gravity on your body and neck, and ultimately protect the nerves that exit the lower neck region. The base of your neck is an area that is already prone to injury and deterioration due to the weight of the head, and is likely the cause of the tingling and numbing sensations in your arms. In order to begin to fix your spinal architecture, you must first be aware of your posture, and be diligent in holding your head in an upright position. Once you are aware of your posture and head position, you must reinforce your body into this vertical position so it becomes more natural. This can be done by standing against a wall or other flat surface to feel how far back your head needs to be positioned in relation to your shoulders. By applying this position to how you carry your body on a daily basis you will reduce the irritation and inflammation on your spine and exiting nerves. You can also reduce the inflammation by applying ice or a cold pack to the base of your neck. As you maintain awareness of your posture and spinal positioning, strengthening will provide the crucial support and endurance you need to hold your head over your shoulders. Find activities that help strengthen your body, such as; lifting weights, doing bodyweight exercises, attending a strengthening class, or simply finding a strengthening activity at home. You Tube is an excellent resource for strength exercise ideas. Are you taking care of your body so that you age the best way possible? In this video, Dr. Brad Wolf discusses different aspects of aging in terms of your bodily health, and what you can do to keep your body functioning and aging the best way possible. Much like any product that we purchase and use on a consistent basis, our bodies experience “Wear-and-Tear” as we age. Due to the activities we partake (ie. sitting at a computer, playing sports, or walking), we need to be aware of the wear-and-tear on our bodies. If our joints wear out too early in life, as we age, we can expect to have more pain and issues down the road. It is not uncommon for joints to be replaced as a person ages. Especially hips, knees and shoulders, as well as spinal surgery. These are just physical problems that develop. Wear and tear also applies to the effect your food has on your digestive system, the quality of your shoes and mattress and much more. Being mindful of your body’s wear-and-tear, Dr. Brad Wolf discusses the importance of being proactive versus reactive when it comes to the health of your body. Often times, people have a tendency to wait until something is broken to fix it, rather than taking precautions to keep your body functioning the best it can. How we care for our body now, will have an effect on our health later in life. Once we begin living with wear-and-tear in mind, and are being proactive with our health, we can preserve our body so we can age better, longer, and healthier. The concept of aging the right way is about thinking ahead and living the best life you can now to ensure that you are healthy in the future. Watch this video to learn more about these concepts and mindsets that can help you age the best way possible!

Are you someone who has experienced pain in the inside of your knee? Dr. Brad Wolf talks about the one exercise you can do to relieve the pain in the inside of your knee, and continue to live an active life! To address knee pain, you must understand the relationship between the hip, the knee, and the ankle. Ideally, your legs should be positioned and functioning in a straight line, where your hips, knees, and ankles are all vertically aligned with one another. If you’re a runner, and are not aligned and/or do not move in a straight pattern, you can cause serious damage to your hips, knees and ankles. Check your legs from your hip down to your foot to ensure that they are straight, before taking on serious running ventures, or activities that can cause damage to your knees. To begin relieving your knee pain, you must align your lower leg with your knee. This is done by strengthening your medial quadricep (the inner thigh muscle closest to the knee). By strengthening your medial quadricep, you’ll help align your kneecap with your lower leg, keeping it centered between the upper leg and lower leg, and ultimately begin to alleviate your knee pain. Follow along with Dr. Brad Wolf, as he demonstrates how to strengthen this muscle, and alleviate your knee pain in minutes!

Follow along with Dr. Brad Wolf as he teaches you to strengthen the inside of your quadricep muscle, and alleviate your knee pain in minutes! Are you experiencing pain in the inside of your knee? Dr. Brad Wolf talks about the one exercise you can do to relieve the pain in the inside of your knee, and continue to live an active life! The relationship between the hip, the knee, and the ankle, is crucial to the health of your knee. Your legs should be positioned and functioning in a straight line, where your hips, knees, and ankles are all vertically aligned with one another. When looking at the mechanics of the knee, your quadriceps are the three thigh muscles that control your knee and lower leg movement. These muscles should be used to help keep the alignment between your hips, knees, and ankles in place. To begin to align your hips, knees, and ankles and work towards relieving your knee pain, you must strengthen your medial quadricep (the inner thigh muscle closest to the knee). Follow along as Dr. Brad demonstrates the one stretch you can do to strengthen the medial quadricep: Start by holding onto something like a wall. You want to bend your knee towards your back Then proceed to straighten your leg, turning your foot outward Repeat this process Doing this process contracts the teardrop muscle located on the inner part of your knee, helping strengthen muscles surrounding the kneecap. By strengthening your muscles surrounding your knee, you’ll help keep your kneecap centered between the upper leg and lower leg, and ultimately begin to alleviate your knee pain. Whether you’re a runner, bicyclist, or someone who is constantly on their feet, be aware of your hip, knee, and ankle alignment, and be sure to exercise and strengthen the muscles surrounding your knee.

3 Steps To Back Pain Relief

Back pain is the Number One cause of disability in the entire world. In this video Dr. Brad Wolf teaches you 3 main principles that you can utilize to alleviate your back pain, avoid spinal surgery, and live your best life possible. Principle 1) Spinal architecture. Your spine’s architecture has a natural shape and contour. It is straight when looking at it from the back or front, and has a natural curvature when looking from the side. Everyday gravity puts force on your body, that attempts to compress your posture. It is essential to get your body in a position that is in relation to gravity; this will lessen the tension placed on your neck, upper back and shoulders and put your body in the best position possible. Principle 2) Reducing Inflammation. When you have back pain, the nerves become irritated, causing the muscles to become inflamed. To bring down the inflammation in the lower back, place an ice pack in the inflamed area. Because the body naturally produces heat when inflamed, you should avoid placing heat on the pain. Principle 3) Strengthen your body. Once you have practiced being in a better position, and have reduced the inflammation in your lower back, it is critical to reinforce your spinal architecture through strength building to help keep your body as strong and stable as possible and protect your back. By understanding and applying these 3 core principles–keeping your spinal architecture intact, reducing inflammation, and strengthening the body–you can build your body’s health, relieve your back pain, and ultimately avoid spinal surgery!

In this video, Dr. Brad Wolf talks about what is scoliosis, and how you can take care of it if you have it. So what does it mean to have scoliosis? Scoliosis is a condition where the spine develops abnormal curves to the side instead of remaining straight. This condition is not ideal for the body, and when not treated properly, can cause dramatic health issues. If you have a severe form of scoliosis you may have to take drastic measures to manage the condition, but if you are like most, and deal with a more slight curvature of the spine, there are principles you can follow to manage your body better and prevent further problems. The first principle that we must acknowledge is our spinal architecture. The body is not perfectly symmetrical, but the more we practice elongating and balancing our body, the better our spinal architecture will hold up. Over our lifetime, gravity takes a toll, as it puts downward force on our body at all times. With scoliosis, because the spine is not vertically aligned, this force can cause greater damage to the spine and begin to turn and change the shape of the bones. With greater care and attention to your scoliosis, you can help alleviate symptoms, pain and other problems caused by scoliosis. Whenever there is pain in the neck, back or body caused by scoliosis, we can reduce inflammation with ice. As you manage the inflammation, your positioning will become easier as well. Because of the dramatic damage and deterioration that this condition can cause to your spine, professional attention is often necessary to manage your scoliosis. Even the best posture practices and body strengthening doesn’t guarantee your spine will remain straight, without curvature. If you do not know if you have scoliosis or think you may have this condition, be sure to seek assistance to ensure that you are taking the necessary steps to treat your condition and live the best life possible!

Slipped Disc Symptoms & What To Do About It

In this video, Dr. Brad Wolf talks about Slipped Disc Symptoms and gives you a couple slipped disc exercises that you can do at home. By taking the best care of your back, you can avoid spinal surgery, and live the best life possible. Dr. Wolf explains the components of the disc, its placement, and what happens when you have a “slipped disc.” The name “Slipped Disc” is actually a misnomer, as the disc never actually ‘slips.’ Instead, when the disc tears from the inside, it causes swelling and protrusion in the weakened fibers of the disc. When the position of the spine is not properly cared for, the center of the disc can begin to swell, putting pressure on the outer wall of the disc. This can can cause pressure and inflammation of the nerve that runs alongside the disc. When this happens, discomfort can only be relieved by taking pressure off of the nerve (retracting the disc away from the nerve). The positioning of your spine plays the most crucial role in the health of the disc. If we aren’t practicing good spinal architecture and positioning, discs can become damaged through a process of degeneration. The disc has the most balance and stability when it is properly aligned with the spine. By practicing healthy posture for your spinal discs, and keeping the spine in an upright, vertical position, you can begin to let your slipped disc heal. Often times, when spinal surgery is performed to treat a slipped disc, the protruding portion of the slipped disc is completely removed. The problem with this practice is that when a part of the disc is removed, the disc becomes imbalanced in shape, giving the patient a greater risk to injury and future disc problems. The second important thing to do to heal a slipped disc, is to manage any inflammation. This can be done with a cold pack applied to the area of inflammation. The third most important step to heal a slipped disc is to strengthen your back and stabilize your body as a whole. When your body is strengthened and stabilized, slipped discs will be in the best possible position for healing. By applying these three core principles, you can begin to heal your slipped disc, keep your spine healthy and avoid the possibility of spinal surgery!
