It was another year for the Keys 100 from Key Largo to Key West. On this year's Keys 100 chat we've got JD Mcgee, Ty Aronson, Sarah Raaymakers, and Vivianne Zerquera! At the Keys 100, this group got it done and got those belt buckles! JD got it done with a time of 30:53:42 and he's even got an awesome new Keys 100 tattoo! He's done races like the Pinellas Trail Challenge, the Toxic Trail, Colt 45, Long Play, Sweat Swat n' Swear, and the Monroe Cross Trail 50 Mile Ultra. This dude has also been a tremendous help with volunteering at so many races like the Skunk Ape Night Run and he has also been a huge help crewing at races like the Lake to Ocean 100k. Ty Aronson got it done with a time of 30:08:46! He's done races like the Daytona 100, the Long Haul 100, Tunnel Hill, and last year he ran at the Keys 100 with a time of 31:38:57! So it was awesome to see him comeback for a new personal record for the Keys 100 course. Sarah Raaymakers placed 12th overall with a time 23:27:42! She's done races like the Pinellas Trail Challenge, the Clearwater Distance Classic 50k, and she ran the 50k at last year's Keys 100... talk about coming back for more! Viviane crossed that finish line with a time 27:31:37 and!  At the end of her race, she was surprised by a huge proposal that you'll hear all about! what an amazing end so something already so special. She's done races like the Daytona 100 in the 50 Miler event and the Marine Corp Marathon in the 50k event! Such an iconic and legendary Florida race! From the Race Director Bob Becker to all the volunteers, the Course Marshalls, Mark Cudak, the runners, the crews, the county, and everyone else involved does an amazing job year after year!

4-16-2023 Update Well my friends.  Tomorrow is Patriots Day in Boston. And we all know what that means.  That's right, it's the Boston Marathon.  I've got a few friends running.  The weather looks pretty good. Sara Hall is running and Des Linden.  The fastest man in the world, Kipchoge is looking to complete his sweep of the majors.   Who knows?  Maybe we'll see a sub-2-hour finish from him!  That would be something.  I am running a bit again.  I have spent the last 2-3 month slowly trying to get myself back into shape.  The knee seems to be ok as long as I don't work it to hard.  I'm still trying to see where the edge is.  I worked with Rachel and took 15-20 pounds off.  And I got through the first 30 days of the Body Building for Beginners program.  I'm going to stop that right there.  I repeated weeks 3 and 4, but I'm not going to go deeper.  It gets very specific in the second two months and is probably more complex than I need.  And, the big news is that I have signed up for a race.  My friend Ann who we have talked to a couple times here on the podcast has a charity that she is heavily involved in called “Burgers and Bands” which is a teenage suicide prevention program.  She got 50 charity slots for the Marine Corp Marathon.  So, jokingly, I said, if you run it I'll run it.  And she called my bluff.  I am fund raising and I'm going to try to blog about the process of getting back into shape.  I'll put a link in the show notes, at the top so you can donate.  Then my coach, who was in the mix, said “Ok if you two run I'll train you.”  And the rest is, as they say is history.  I am going to toss in some audio from before my run today.  I am going to start podcasting more.  I have some interviews.  I'm trying to put less pressure on myself.  I've got a lot of ideas and a lot of content, but less time to execute. I have been plugging away at my other, After the Apocalypse podcast.  I'm just about to finish up season 3.  I'm getting somewhere around 22,000 downloads a month.  There's 20 episodes in a season, and I plan to make each season into a book.  As I creep ever closer to retirement I'm setting myself up to have a bunch of evergreen publishing content going.  At some point I'll circle back to all the posts on RunRunLive and try to consolidate them into some sort of order and edit them up into some books.  There are literally millions of words worth of content out there.  Anyhow, figured I'd check in let you know I'm still out here.  A little slower, gimpy-er and grey – but out here none the less.

In this episode, I sit down with fellow Rise Up Nutrition LLC dietitian Jenna Stranzl, our first repeat guest. Catch our previous conversation where Jenna shares her story on episode 30 of the Female Athlete Nutrition Podcast.   Today we discuss the most rewarding parts of helping our clients overcome their fueling concerns, seeing how mindset shifts have led to huge transformations across their whole lives. Jenna and I talk about the education and experience required to become a dietitian, some of the different dietetic careers paths, and how to find what suits you. Despite certainly practicing what we preach, Jenna and I are still evolving our own relationships with nutrition and our bodies. New chapters and different stages of life bring new and different challenges of their own, requiring us to constantly check in and evaluate our thought patterns and behavior. We touch on struggles in our own personal and professional lives, and how working with clients has improved our own body image: the tools that we equip our clients with we also use ourselves. Being fit, fast and fueled is not defined by the absence of struggle and disordered thoughts, the difference is in how we react to them. I speak on my personal mind and body changes throughout pregnancy, and how I've had to shift my view of exercise and weight gain during and post-partum: the pressure to get your pre-pregnancy body back is real but not realistic or healthy! Similarly Jenna reflects on her own journey with running and challenging some lingering "food rules" like having Splenda often! The way we invest in our clients is by investing in ourselves first. And Jenna and I share how we have started coaching each other through challenges in our own lives: even dietitians need dietitians sometimes! Little did I know that through the training, it was going help me understand how to care for my knees and my entire body.  Your knees, hips and shoulders are probably the most easily injured parts of your body besides spinal injuries. It is not uncommon for people to have double knee replacements or double hip replacements. All of this wear and tear is eventually going to catch up with some of us. Michel Faulkner has dedicated his life to serving God and his community. Growing up in Washington, D.C., he was an all-star football player that became a freshman All-American and four-year starter at VirginiaTech. In 1980, Rev.Faulkner graduated with a B.A. in communications. Then in 1985 he earned his M.A. in Education with emphasis in Career Counseling. After college, Rev. Faulkner played two seasons (1980-82) in the NFL, one season with the NY Jets. In 1983, Faulkner returned to Virginia Tech and graduated with a Master’s. Upon completing of his Master’s degree, he became the Assistant Dean of Students at Liberty University in 1985, and was promoted to Vice President for Urban Ministry in 1987. In 1988, Rev. Faulkner and his family moved to Times Square in New York City, to run a soup kitchen as Assistant Pastor for the Lamb’s Church. A little more than one year later, he joined the staff of Calvary Baptist Church in Manhattan as Pastor for Youth and Community Outreach, where he was ordained inDecember 1991. While at Calvary he also served as co-chairman for the New York City Board of Education’s HIV/ AIDS Task Force from 1991- 1994 In 1993, Rev. Faulkner became the Senior Pastor of Central Baptist Church in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He was able to grow the congregation from an average of 50 weekly attendees to over 400. While serving as Senior Pastor at Central he also served as the Vice President for Community Government Relations at King’s College from 1998 to 2002. He served on Mayor Giuliani’s Task Force on Police Community Relations and wasa Commissioner for the City Charter Revision. Also from June of 2002 to February of 2004, Rev. Faulkner served as World Vision’s Director of U.S. Programs in New York City helping to give share to their 9/11 response in NYC. In 2005, Rev. Faulkner founded the Institute for Leadership, a 501-3c organization to develop leaders and bring scalable solutions to difficult community problems. In June 2006, Rev. Faulkner he founded the New Horizon Church of New York in Harlem on the purpose to build bridges between the economically and socially disadvantaged in the name ofChrist. In 2010 Rev. Faulkner he was the Republican candidate for Congress for New York’s 15th Congressional district. Also in 2010, Rev. Faulkner published his first book “Restoring the American Dream”, which highlights his vision and goals to save the American Dream for future generations. In September 2015 Rev. Faulkner became a Republican candidate for Mayor and in May 2017 switched to a candidacy for Comptroller. He was nominated by Republican, Conservative, Reformed and Independence Parties. He received 22 percent of the vote November 8 2017. Rev. Faulkner has completed four marathons including the 2010 NYC Marathon which was a lifelong goal for him. In October 27, 2013, he completed the Marine Corp Marathon in Washington D.C. Rev. Faulkner is also a frequent commenter for numerous national and local media outlets including CNN and FOX News. In February 2014 Rev. Faulkner lost his wife, Virginia, of more than 31 years to lupus. Together they raised 3 children in New York City, all have graduated College. In March 2015, Rev. Faulkner married Dr. Sarai Padilla. She is a practicing psychologist for more than 30 years and has one daughter and three grandchildren.

Our Body Epiphanies & Resilient Mindset Co-Host: Brandon Trean was homeschooled most of his entire life by two awesome parents. He had wild health issues from mercury intoxication, to 8 lung collapses (one he almost died from laughing to death and had his life flash before his eyes). A year of throwing up nearly every day and coming down to intense malnutrition states at a young age, to now dealing with a gut issue that was deemed as sepsis back on March 15th, 2014. Needless to say, Brandon has been deeply educated by this inner teacher to this day. Nose bleeds that required cauterization multiple times, sleep paralysis, unique meditation experiences, etc. I started my practice (massage/bodywork & nutritional studio) when I was 24 years old with $15K in debt even at the counter advice of other business comrades. I've only ever had one job prior to this which was a fun management position with a movie store. A lot of auspiciousness throughout my life, meeting the right people at the right times leading to more accumulating evidence that living by intuition has served me well. I think if I have something to offer to your groovy podcast series, it is simply resilience of mind in the face of seemingly insurmountable physical & mental disease states. Essentially mindset and how I have forged an optimism that is my north star in multiple circumstances that ought to have killed me (some 14 close calls with death). I have other projects I want to offer to the world (Dappurr Cat, Immortal Inquiry, etc.) but the current health circumstance I am facing (some 220+ experiments over 3 years to attempt to correct and understand said pathology(s) has been a constant reminder that I must keep my health as my chief focus at this current time. I have interesting business marketing ideas that I have implemented over the years that have worked well in attracting my peoples as it were. Training for Chicago and NYC Marathons, discussion about the Marine Corp Marathon and Action for Healthy Kids with Runner of the Week, Tom Kreider, and Serena and I talk about marathon training and what is the ideal choice when eating bread is what is in store for today.  If you want to make sure you don't miss a single update from The Running Lifestyle Show, please head over to www.therunninglifestyle.com/join and find out the 11 Strategies to Create a Running Lifestyle. Jeff calms me down when I am freaking out “on air” about running a 20 mile run, having pain in my right hip, updating The Running Lifestyle website and trying to balance family and work while training for two marathons.  Jeff shares how you can never go too slow in a long run. In fact, you can even walk the whole way which enables you to keep up your endurance going in to a race.  The longer you run, the more time there is for aches and pains to appear, so Jeff recommends running for as little as 10-15 seconds and then walking 30 seconds. Tips Jeff shares to battle the heat is to run in the dark (safety first), and dumping cold water over your head every 20 minutes. Some of Jeff's running groups stat their long runs from 2-3:00 AM to avoid the sun. Wow! We discuss how the ElliptiGo is an amazing piece of machinery that allows someone to train with out the impact. Turns out that I went out too hard on the Go in the beginning with one hour rides including hills.  Ideally, when starting out with the Go, its recommended to start with 15-30 minute gentle rides.  Jeff has recommended that I replace one of my easy 30 minute Tuesday/Thursday runs with an easy 30 minute ElliptiGo session. Yay! I LOVE the Go so that was magic to my ears.  The ElliptiGo is a fantastic tool for hip strengthening. Speaking of magic, we discussed how to determine what a Magic Mile is. The Magic Mile gives you an indication of your race pace.  To determine a Magic Mile, run a mile, then multiply it by 1.30 because people generally slow down by 30% when running a marathon.  When running a long run, because you can never go too slow, add two minutes to race pace.  I ran a 10:30 Magic Mile recently, so that means I would run a 13:39 marathon race pace, which means when I go out for a long run now, I should run it around a 15:30 race pace.  As time goes on, and it cools down, it will be interesting to see how my time is affected. Jeff has helped over 10,000 runners and receiving videotaping of people running just doesn't give enough information. Many people attend his running schools and seminars across the world to work on their form.  Jeff recommended I go back to my physical therapist who knows my body best to see “what is going” with the pain in my right hip. Serena and I are going to have our virtual race where people can run 2.62 miles by November 1st (the day of the NYC Marathon), and receive a special certificate.  The cost of the virtual race is $26.20 and all of the money raised will go to Team Kari and Serena Run NYC and Chicago.  Friendly reminder, Jeff has the Jeff Galloway 13.1 on December 13, 2015 in Atlanta.  There is a chance I may be going down there to join in on the fun. We then transition over to our Runner of the Week, Tom Kreider. Presented by Martin Yelling and Tom Williams Tony Audenshaw - Tony's Trials I'm guessing we are going to go long today, so you'd better schedule a long run or ride or whatever for this one.  I've invited some of my friends to submit audios and I'm going to be completely frivolous and indiscrete with too many musical interludes.  Just sit back and let it wash over you like a wave of warm molasses.  Chill out.  No rules for this one.  It's going to be a long show and the format is going to be different than usual, but you want to hang around until the end because the ASICS team has asked me to give some shoes away and I'll set up the contest in the show outro.  Everybody likes free shoes.   It's been a long run, huh?  We've seen births and deaths and marriages and divorces.  The cycle of life.  For everything there is a season and you've certainly ornamented my life for the better through these many seasons.   In today's 300th official episode I'm going to talk about community at some point and this strange and wonderful long distance relationship we all share wrapped around our sports.  I may tell a zombie story, for the Halloween season, just for fun.   I've gathered up some guest commentary for you to enjoy, if for no other reason than to quiet the voices in your head.  But, Fear not! We are going to wrap all the frivolity around a great interview with coach Andrew Kastor who I met through the ASICS NYC marathon Editor's Choice boondoggle, I mean ‘program'.  I really enjoyed talking to Andrew about altitude training and geeking out on training topics in general.   It's a great running-content-rich interview and I feel I'm doing it a disservice by sandwiching it into all this 300th episode frooforal.  Nothing significantly new in my training.  I'm feeling fairly strong.  I got a nice 2:30 long run in over the weekend that was significant in that I was able to maintain my HR and pace consistently throughout without power failure.  Too many of my long runs over the summer ended with a death march – so I think that's progress.   I'm still trying to find my racing speed.  Maybe it's gone for good.  I appear to be healthy, so maybe I'm just entering a new phase of slowness.  It really doesn't matter because either way I'm going to get up every day and throw myself at my workouts as part of my balance.   With the MCM and NYC coming up in couple weeks on back to back weekends my plan is not to race them but instead try to walk away healthy.  Then we can throw in a targeted cycle for either a mid-winter race or a spring race.  I'm looking at some shorter stuff too to fill the gaps.   Looking forward to some grand adventures with new and old friends alike.  So…my friends, bear with me as we take off our shirts and dance on the tables today, throwing all rigor and caution to the wind, because, hey, we're among friends, and friends take the time to celebrate their accomplishments.   On with the show!  Steve Runner What can you say about Steve that hasn't been said?  He's the five-star General of running podcasts – a landmark – a fixture – a guiding light for all of us.  And, even though I know he doesn't listen to my show he caught on to the zombie theme and submitted a slickly produced mini-episode.  Brilliant as always.  Katy Thereux It always warms my heart when I hear from women who listen to the show and get something out of it.  Katy sent me this very nice missive.  Apparently we resonate in some way through the universal mastermind.  That's one of the dynamics of the digital world – your ideas can slip free of the physical and resonate with like minds in the ether.  Section One The Sleepless in Seattle Effect - http://runrunlive.com/sleepless-in-seattle-effect Music -> Bombskare –“I'm so Happy!” Carlos I've been listening to Carlos and watching him run through his beloved Pacific Northwest Mountains and forest for many years.  I would have never had the opportunity to know Carlos if it wasn't for being part of the online running community.  He's always got the Grateful Dead playing in the background.  It seems like an idyllic life to me, running in the forest and listening to the dead.  How could it get any better?  Ann Brennan So sometimes in the digital world you get to meet actual crazy people.  I've had the great pleasure of meeting Ann and her husband and kids and I've learned a lot from her trials and resiliency and openness.   If everything goes right I'll get to eat dinner at her place with the Miles to end Prostate cancer team before the Marine Corp Marathon.  The world is a better place with Ann's life force.   Steve Chopper Steve was one of the original running podcasters with his high quality show “A mile with me” I always aspired to be as professional as Steve.  His first shows were works of art, like BBC documentaries.  I've met Steve in the flesh and broken bread with him.  When we met we immediately bonded and of course we ran and raced each other like kids in the schoolyard.  Featured Interview Coach Andrew Kastor http://www.coachkastor.com/about/ About The Coach Andrew started his running career in the early 1990's, at the young age of 14, when he competed in cross county, track and road racing while attending Fountain Valley High School in Southern California. He then went on to pursue a degree in Exercise Physiology (B.S. 2000) from Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado. While in college, Andrew's commitment to the sport of running continued to grow, as he competed in cross-country and track, specializing in the middle-distance events. Post-graduation, Andrew moved to Mammoth Lakes, California, where he created and coached a non-profit running club called the High Sierra Striders. He is now the head coach for the ASICS Mammoth Track Club and the LA Road Runners. Andrew currently resides in Mammoth Lakes with his wife Deena (Olympic Marathon bronze medalist and American Record holder in the marathon and half-marathon) and their daughter, Piper Bloom. Music Big D and the Kid's Table – “Myself” Duane Hespell Comment:  Obviously I caught Duane on a good day.  I think he was just waiting for a chance to bust out with some creative audio.  He went all extra-mile on me.  That's another fun thing about our community – you discover people's hidden talents! Thanks Duane.   Maryro Mendez comment I've been having conversations with this young lady for a long time but I seldom hear her voice!  Wow! What an amazing voice!  I can die happy now.  We made a bet one time when we both had marathons on the same weekend. I happened to have a decent race so I won!  I don't care so much about the lobster dinner but I am happy to have made a friend that I'm grateful for.   Section Two:  Zombie Apocalypse - http://runrunlive.com/zombie-apocalypse-300-act-one Peter Herridge I first got to know Peter through Phedipidations as he and Steve traded philosophical arguments.  Peter is a thoughtful man and I enjoy listening to him turn big thoughts over in his head and look at them in a fresh, learned and interesting way.  I'd never get that chance if it wasn't for joining this community and my life would be poorer for it.  Eddie and Adam: What does it sound like when two long lost friends get together after a long absence and start drinking craft beer?  I guess this bit from Eddie and Adam answers that question.  I've spent time with both these guys and can confirm that when they're not addled on homebrew they're both way smarter than I am.  I'm hoping someday my association with them rubs off and I graduate to a better person because of it.  Outro:  Drag your tired body out of the mud.  Push back the ravenous hoards.  Celebrate! We've come to a milestone.  We've survived.  We've grown.
