In our Gospel reading from St. Luke 8, Jesus tells the Parable of the Sower/Parable of the Soils. In this parable, our Lord lists three reasons for the unhealthy soil in our soul in which the seed of our new life given through Him cannot grow. While we all have each type of unhealthy soil within our souls, today we focus on the first type that our Lord mentions; the hard and unyielding soil. Lent is a season in which we yoke ourselves to Christ so that the hard and fallow ground may be churned up. Underneath the hard ground, the rocks, and the thorns we discover that which is most natural to the human creation; the very real and pure hunger and thirst for God.
Heartland Church Sermon — Sunday, August 7Speaker: Pastor Darryn Scheske
Acts 17:16-34 New King James Version The Philosophers at Athens 16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was given over to idols. 17 Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with the Gentile worshipers, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there. 18 Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, “What does this [c]babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods,” because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection. 19 And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new doctrine is of which you speak? 20 For you are bringing some strange things to our ears. Therefore we want to know what these things mean.” 21 For all the Athenians and the foreigners who were there spent their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some new thing. Addressing the Areopagus 22 Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; 23 for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you: 24 God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. 25 Nor is He worshiped with men's hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. 26 And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, 27 so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; 28 for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.' 29 Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man's devising. 30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” 32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said, “We will hear you again on this matter.” 33 So Paul departed from among them. 34 However, some men joined him and believed, among them Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

When James was just six years old, his older brother David died tragically in an ice-skating accident. It was the day before David’s fourteenth birthday. In the years that followed, James tried his best to console his mother, Margaret, who in her deep grief sometimes reminded herself that her elder son would never have to face the challenges of growing up. In James Barrie’s fertile imagination, decades later that same idea would burgeon into inspiration for a much-loved children’s story character who never aged: Peter Pan. Like a flower pushing its way through pavement, good emerged even from the hard ground of unthinkable heartache. How comforting is the thought that God, in an infinitely more creative way, is able to bring good out of our most difficult circumstances. A beautiful illustration of this occurs in the Old Testament story of Ruth. Naomi lost her two sons, leaving her without means or support. Her widowed daughter-in-law Ruth chose to remain with Naomi to help provide for her and to serve her God (Ruth 1:16). In the end, God’s provision brought them unexpected joy. Ruth remarried and had a child, “and they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David” (Ruth 4:17). He would also be listed among the ancestors of Jesus (Matthew 1:5). God’s tender mercy reaches beyond our ability to fathom and meets us in surprising places. Keep looking! Perhaps you will see it today.

Hitting the hard ground hurts. You're gonna be bruised, broken, and busted up. But hitting concrete is a career-ender, a deal-breaker, and you'll probably die. So many people think that the mistakes they make are career-enders (like hitting concrete). But I encourage you to reconsider; get up, dust yourself off and go again instead of giving up. What has happened to you is not a deal-breaker, it’s all the way you choose to look at it. So many people think they've hit concrete if they gain their weight back. They think they will never come back from it. There's nothing in weight loss or in Code Red that is a deal-breaker. It might be embarrassing, but spending the rest of your life overweight just because you are embarrassed doesn't make any sense. You can come back from it if you just took the next small step forward. Whatever happened is in the past. All you need to is identify what went wrong, learn from your mistakes, and move forward in a different direction. Is there anything in your life you think you can't come back from? Have you gained back all the weight you lost and are now stuck? Tune in to this episode to learn how to get up, dust yourself, and take the next small step forward. Key Takeaways Difference between hitting hard ground and hitting concrete (03:35) Learning from our mistakes and moving forward in a different direction (18:25) It's all in the way you choose to look at it (19:38) Gaining your weight back is not a deal-breaker (20:12) How to identify where you went wrong so that you don't make the same mistake again (23:28) There's no amount of weight that you could gain that is a deal-breaker (25:35) All you need to do is take the next small step forward (28:18) Additional Resources: https://www.swanwicksleep.com/ http://coderedlifestyle.com/swannies Cristy 'Code Red' Nickel Special | Save 15%, use code "REBEL" --------- Get Your Personalized Code Red Water Bottle Coderedlifestyle.com/app/ https://coderedlifestyle.com/ The "Code Red Revolution" book on Amazon Get your FREE copy of the On-The-Go Guide for Code Red approved food here: http://bit.ly/on-the-go-guide You can find out more about Cristy and the topic covered in this episode by checking out her website here. Unoffendable. How can I grow to be that way? Hard ground has been hurt by offense. We have all been hurt, but how do we deal with offense God's way? The Bible says in the last days the love of many will grow cold because of iniquity. I believe the iniquity may not be ours but the world around us. Listen and grow to become unoffendable. Get rid of the hard areas of your heart so you can see the 100 fold return God speaks of in this parable that unlocks all the other parables.
In our 10th weekly episode of the first series of The Horse & Hound Podcast, we kick off with an exclusive interview featuring top British showjumper William Whitaker. Our magazine editor and podcast host Pippa Roome chats to William about how it feels to be based back at home after spending a number of years in Europe and the US, his memories of Olympia and what success there means to him, the special horses of his career so far and his plans for the future. Moving on to the week's top news stories, our news editor Eleanor Jones and news writer Becky Murray join Pippa to discuss this week's key stories including riders' responsibilities and the Covid-19 rules in place at international shows, why more people are calling for yards to review their turnout facilities and what owners need to know about the microchipping rules that are coming in very soon. We also hear from vet Ricky Farr MRCVS, who this week discusses why hard ground is a problem for some horses and what owners can do to help avoid putting their horses at risk. We hope you will enjoy it.

Yellowknife based indigenous singer-songwriter Leela Gilday has just released her fifth album "North Star Calling". Inspired by self empowerment, and as Leela puts it facing your fears, standing your ground, and living with courage, boldness and joy, the album , which was produced by Hill Kourkoutis, also explores two themes that are often found in Leela Gilday's songwriting - a deep connection with the land, and the beauty and draw of the north. It's also an album about healing. According to Leela, true healing is not about just the absence of pain or addictions, although those are significant- it is about celebration, it is complicated, it is about weaving the fabric of the years of your own life into a beautiful blanket to hold you and ground you. It is about letting go of expectation and opening new eyes on the world around you. Leela Gilday joined us on Folk Roots Radio to chat about the new album. For more information and upcoming tour dates, visit http://leelagilday.com. In the parable of the sower, Jesus outlines how mankind hears the Word of God. Some hear it and it takes no root because the ground is too hard. Some hear it and it takes a shallow root, but only for a short time until the sun comes and withers the plant. Join us this week as Bro. Gary teaches us how to cultivate the soil and let the Word of God take a deep root in your heart.

In today’s broadcast, we will be considering one of these parables – the story of the sower and the seed. The sower threw his seed on different types of ground – hard, stony, and thorny. But the crop in each case failed. Not that there was anything wrong with the seed – no, the problem was with heart of the listener. Only when falling on GOOD ground, could the seed germinate, take root and grow. Only then could there be fruit for God. On what kind of ground will the seed, the Word of God, to you fall today?
