It was the kind of place where parents felt safe letting their kids ride their bikes until the streetlights flickered on. But in the fall of 1995, that sense of security was shattered. A girl vanished without a trace—one moment, she was there, a bright, imaginative 13-year-old with dreams of becoming a writer. The next, she was gone. Her name was Jessyca Mullenberg.Jessyca's life had already seen its share of changes. After her parents divorced, she moved to Wausau, Wisconsin, with her mother, stepfather, and two younger brothers. She missed Eau Claire, missed the familiarity of her old neighborhood. But she still visited her father often, spending weekends with him in the house she once called home. It was during those visits that she met a man who would change the course of her life forever.Support the show

Send us a textVanderhoof, British Columbia—a picturesque town surrounded by dense forests and rugged terrain. It's a place where life moves at a steady, familiar pace and where everyone seems to know each other. But in May 2011, the close-knit community was shaken by the disappearance of a young woman whose vibrant personality and adventurous spirit were the heart of those who knew her.Madison Scott, or Maddy as her loved ones called her, was born on April 29, 1991, to Eldon and Dawn Scott. Growing up alongside her siblings Ben and Georgia, Maddy's life was filled with love, laughter, and a healthy dose of adventure. She was a force of nature, just as comfortable in a dress as she was in her work coveralls. Whether she was tearing through the trails on her dirt bike or gliding gracefully across the ice as a figure skater, Maddy embraced life with boundless energy. She thrived on spontaneity, often planning impromptu adventures or performing in amateur video productions with her friends. Her vivacious, playful personality was magnetic—she lit up every room she entered. But Maddy wasn't just about fun. She had a compassionate and generous heart, always willing to lend a hand or bring a smile to someone's face.At Nechako Valley Secondary School, Maddy struck a delicate balance between academics and her vibrant social life. While she was more focused on forging friendships and savoring her teenage years, she still met the demands of her studies. After graduating in 2009, she followed in her father's footsteps, working as an apprentice heavy-duty mechanic in the logging industry—a testament to her determination and grit. But for all her light and energy, Maddy's story took a dark and inexplicable turn. It was a weekend that was supposed to be filled with laughter, celebration, and friends. Late May in British Columbia marked the start of camping season, a time when locals would gather at places like Hogsback Lake to soak in the beauty of nature. For Madison Scott, or Maddy as her friends and family called her, the weekend of May 27th, 2011, would be one to remember—but not in the way anyone expected.Support the show

On January 25th, 2019, in the quiet town of Tomball, Texas, a seemingly ordinary morning turned into a nightmare. Elizabeth 'Liz' Barraza, a 29-year-old with dreams of a blissful anniversary trip to Florida, was setting up for a last-minute garage sale when an unimaginable act of violence unfolded. Her husband, Sergio, left for work just moments before the unspeakable tragedy struck. A black Nissan Frontier Pro-4X pulled up near the Barraza's driveway, and an unknown figure stepped out, approaching Elizabeth with apparent familiarity. Little did she know that her life was about to be cut short in the most horrific manner. Elizabeth's neighbors, going about their own routines that fateful morning, heard her friendly "good morning" to the mysterious visitor. But within seconds, the atmosphere shattered as gunshots echoed through the peaceful neighborhood, leaving Elizabeth lying in her driveway, gasping for help that never came. Support the show
On September 23, 2002, 18-year-old Rachel Burkheimer, was forced to watch her own grave being dug by her ex-boyfriend and his gang in foothills of the Cascade Mountains.Rachel Burkheimer resided, worked, and attended high school in the Tulalip Reservation, spanning over 22,000 acres in Snohomish County, near Everett, Washington.Rachel's social circles and wide-reaching connections were beyond her parents ability to keep track of. During Rachel's early years, her parents harbored concerns about her hearing, as she remained nonverbal until nearly reaching the age of three. Once she found her voice however, it seemed as though a floodgate had opened. With a vivid imagination, she excelled at mimicking others and possessed a library of amusing voices that brought endless joy and entertainment to her family.Despite her petite stature of just 4 feet 11 inches, Rachel possessed a tremendous sense of might and independence. She had a penchant for wearing four-inch heels wherever she went, and her makeup kit was the size of a toolbox. With her infectious smile and striking bright blue eyes, she effortlessly caught the attention of those around her.In August 2001, Rachel experienced a devastating loss when one of her best friends Cory Haynes was tragically killed in a rollover car accident. His sudden passing deeply affected her, leading her to find solace in preserving his memory. She took the death extremely hard and, in her grief, attached his pictures all over her Subaru dashboard and room. She hung his obituary on her bedroom wall.Support the show
Welcome back to part 4 of the true story behind the Love & Death series on Max. In last week's episode we dove into murder of Betty Gore and the shocking details that unfolded. We left off on the police arresting Candy. In this week's episode we will dive into the Trial of Candy Montgomery. After Candy was arrested news started to fly with rumors. As soon as Candy was able to post bail she did. As soon as Candy got home she stopped reading the newspapers and watching the TV news. Unknown to the Montgomerys, the community continued to support them. Pat was heartened by the way everyone stood by them, no matter what new evidence was leaked to the press. The church had been overwhelmingly supportive. Rarely a day went by that they didn't receive at least half a dozen greeting cards and “Have a nice day” cards and “Thinking of you” cards, some of them awkwardly worded, all of them well-intentioned. People who hadn't written or seen the Montgomerys in years were visiting Hallmark stores all over America, trying to find messages suitable for a family awaiting a murder indictment. Candy wrote replies to them all. As Candy was waiting for trial she knew that she needed to have a lawyer that would be in her corner. That is when Candy hired a lawyer she knew from church, Don Crowder, to represent her. Crowder, a partner in a small firm with attorney general Jim Mattox, usually handled personal injury work. He had never been close to a murder case before, and suddenly he had the hottest one in Texas on his hands. Support the show
Welcome back to part 3 of the true story behind the Love & Death series on Max. In last week's episode, we discussed the affair of Candy and Allan, the beginning and end. We left off with them parting ways and really trying to work on their marriages. In this week's episode, we'll be diving into the tragedy that took place from the actions of infidelity. I will put a warning here that this episode will be graphic and not suitable for all audiences; we will be discussing the murder and details about the events leading up to and following the event. As a working mother of two, Betty had a lot on her plate, but what really put a strain on her life was the postpartum depression she suffered after giving birth to her second daughter in 1979. She didn't want to be alone even for a single night, which meant that when Allan had to travel out of town to St. Paul, Minnesota for a weekend for work in the summer of 1980, Betty wasn't happy. This, combined with his wife's usual routine of keeping their girls busy, is why Allan initially did not worry when his wife didn't pick up his expected call from the airport on June 13, 1980. December 12, 1978.Candy spent that morning getting ready for the long anticipated wait. She dropped off her daughter at the little red Lovejoy schoolhouse on FM Road 1378, then she went on to Allen and dropped off her son at the Play Day Preschool. As she drove herself back home she was going to allow herself about an hour to fix the special lunch she had planned: marinated chicken, lettuce salad with cherry tomatoes and bacon bits, Thousand Island dressing, white wine, and cheesecake for dessert. She wanted everything to be perfect, she packed everything, including a tablecloth, into a picnic basket and then gathered together a few undergarments and a nightgown and slipped them into her purse. She had everything ready by ten-forty-five. At 11 on the dot she was entering Richardson in her station wagon, searching for a motel that was convenient from Allan's office. And then she found it, the motel was right on the freeway, just two or three minutes away from Allan, called the Continental Inn.Private Investigations Book Read Alouds PodcastEnjoy the Mystery, Intrigue, Suspense and Coincidences Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show
If you're into true crime shows, we have all watched the Love & Death series on Max starring Elizabeth Olsen. In this week's episode, we will dive into the true story of Betty Gore and Candy Montgomery. In the 1980s, The American suburb, with neatly mown lawns and white picket fences, children at home with their mothers, fathers at work, and friends that felt like family has long been used in pop culture as a facade of normalcy, concealing chaos and violence. This suspicion of the suburbs was partly fueled by books and real-life cases of serial killer John Wayne Gacy, a cheery suburban businessman who murdered more than 30 people in the 1970s. Though in this story, we have betrayal, adultery, and murder. Two families who seem to have it all decided they might want more. This will be a four-part series on our show; I advise you to listen cautiously as we will go into different details surrounding this case. I want to ensure we cover the events of the case. In 1977, when Candy was 28, she and her husband, Pat Montgomery, moved to Wylie, TX, a suburb about 30 miles northeast of Dallas. Pat was an electrical engineer, and Candy was a stay-at-home mom to their two children. The center of their social world was the local Methodist church, where Candy and Pat befriended a local couple named Betty and Allan Gore. Betty was an elementary school teacher; Allan worked for an electronics conglomerate and principal defense contractor. From the outside, they seemed to be living the picturesque American Dream. Berkeley Springs, WV, is a small town within the county seat of Morgan County; its also known to be referred to as the area within the town of Bath. In 2019 Berkeley Springs had a population of 593 people. It's known to be a safe community with few crimes but nothing that compares to what they were going to be hit with soon.Riley Crossman was a gorgeous 15-year-old teenager from West Virginia. Riley was born December 22, 2003, in Martinsburg, WV, and she shared time between her parent's homes in Martinsburg and Berkeley Springs, WV. Riley was a beautiful, innocent soul with a laugh that would fill the room. She was a natural artist, a talented dancer, and had the voice of an angel. Riley loved babies and small children; they were always drawn to her, but none more than her little sister and two younger brothers. She was helpful, caring, intelligent, stubborn, and as dramatic as teenage girls come. Riley was a beacon of light and love for her family; she was loving and kind.In 2019, Riley was growing up and doing what most teenagers do dating. Being 15 years old, like anyone else, she had a crush on one of her schoolmates, Hayden, and the feelings were mutual. Hayden and Riley adored each other, and they started a cute kid romance. Riley's parents adored him and were so happy that Riley had found a sweet kid. Riley's parents were divorced, and she had to split home with both of them. While she spent time with both her parents, she would mostly stay at her mother's place so that she could go to school there. At Riley's mother's house, she lived with her mother and her boyfriend, Andy McCauley. Everything seemed to be going great, school was going great she just started her Freshman year and it was a great start to the next chapter of her life. Riley tried out for the gymnastics team at school and made the cut. This was exciting for her as she was a model student and what every parent would want in a child.
In 2010, a teenager suddenly disappearance in Clayton County, Georgia, without a trace of where she might be. Candice Parchment was 15-year-old living in Clayton County, Georgia, with her mother, Caffian Hyatt. She was an aspiring writer attending Forest Park High School with a bright smile and, by all means, had a promising life ahead of her. She had a journal in which she used to write down her thoughts from the day that she experienced, and it was unknown to everyone that this very journal would be the key to the case. Candice was close to her mother following their emigration from Jamaica for a different, much better life, so it was uncharacteristic for her to suddenly leave home on April 28, 2010. When Caffian couldn't get a hold of her daughter despite trying multiple times over a period of six hours, she decided it was time to report her missing. Like some, unfortunately, the police did not take the disappearance seriously from the beginning. As days went on, Candice's mother started to receive texts from Candice's phone saying that she was in Tennessee and okay. But something seemed off by the messages friends and family said. If you knew Candice, you would know she did not send those messages. However, her mother knew that Candice would not just up and leave. She was someone who was very reliable and was definitely not a runaway. The police did not have any answers to give to Candice's mother, who claimed that the texts were not from Candice and that she could not have been in Tennessee. As days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, the police finally got a lead.
Danielle and Seren were living with Danielle's family in a mobile home rented by Robert Joseph Marzejka, Danielle's father, in Clinton Township. Danielle and Bryan shared a bedroom. Robert, their father, was sleeping in the home's living room because his son Kevin Marzejka and Erin Funk (Kevin's girlfriend) were staying in the only other bedroom. The family had resided in the home for about a month and had a history of frequent moves due to evictions for failing to rent. Robert did paintwork for a general contractor and his son Robert Jr worked with him most of the time, and Kevin would work when he needed the money. The contractor let the three have a white work van for jobs, but they also used it for personal purposes.Danielle and Bryan began working the night shift at National Coney Island with a friend of Danielle's, Khriscinda Whaley. Because Danielle and Seren did not have a vehicle, Whaley drove them to and from work. On August 22, 2018, the three went to work around 9:00 p.m., and Whaley dropped Danielle and Seren off at home around 8:00 a.m. on August 23, 2018. When she dropped them off, Whaley noticed the white work van outside. Danielle's father, Robert, left for work around 8:15 a.m., saying goodbye to Danielle. This was the last time Danielle and Bryan were seen alive.Whaley, Danielle, and Seren were scheduled to work that evening of August 23, 2018, and Whaley was to give the other two a ride to work like normal. Around 1:00 p.m. that day, Whaley attempted to contact Danielle by Facebook Messenger to inform Danielle that she was having vehicle problems and would be unable to drive the three to work that evening. Around 5:00 p.m., Whaley sent a message to Danielle again, informing Danielle that she thought she found them a ride to work. And then, at 7:00 p.m., Whaley sent a third message to Danielle, informing Danielle the ride had fallen through.

I'm Jazmin Hernandez, your host!References:Medium.comVice.comAllthingsinteresting.comCrimeonline.comMurderipdia.comDailyrecord.ukNytimes.comReddit.comToday is Christmas Eve, it's filled with joy and excited. Most are up cooking or baking for tonight and will be spending the evening with family and friends before settling their children down into bed for Santa to come. I know I will be in the kitchen later making my famous pumpkin rolls for Christmas eve and Christmas Day. But as we know this podcast is filled with the dark side of christmas. I was going to focus on only one story this week but decided I can do 3 short stories of murders that have taken place on christmas eve that are not well known to the general public and show have some light shined on them.
Christmas is a time for families and friends to gather around with holiday cheer. Most families have holiday parties with food, drinks, games, and music, while others have a sit-down dinner with a few selected friends. Christmas morning is filled with laughs and screams as children run to the tree to see what Santa brought them, and wrapping paper is laid across the room as they rip through all their gifts. It's a time for family and happiness. But as you know, listening to this podcast, Christmas can also be filled with murder. As we dive into this case, I am not going to dive into the Reddit forms that make assumptions about the family or the motive for why this happened. We will focus on the facts and the facts alone. Christmas, 2008. Joseph and Alice's Ortegas were celebrating Christmas as they did every year. Friends and family were coming over for the annual Christmas eve party. The house would soon be filled with their 5 grown children, grandchildren, and friends. The family played a game of poker that Christmas Eve and the party was in full swing. But the doorbell rang in the middle of their holiday celebration, and what unfolded next was incredibly gruesome. Shortly after the doorbell sounded, police received 911 calls from the Ortega's neighbor. The caller cried, “Come immediately! They're burning down someone's house.”References: https://murderpedia.org/male.P/p/pardo-bruce.htm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covina_massacre https://reallifevillains.miraheze.org/wiki/Bruce_Jeffery_Pardo https://www.instagram.com/covinachristmasmemoriam/?hl=en https://www.sinisterisles.com/post/bruce-pardo-santa-massacre https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/195422391/bruce-jeffrey-pardo https://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-santa-shooting31-2008dec31-story.html https://medium.com/california-dreaming/bruce-pardo-the-santa-claus-shooter-a3225f4baac2 https://wickedwe.com/bruce-pardo/ ...

But some are more intense, making you look over your shoulder and lock your doors at night. The people you have had passed relationships with or who always watched you from afar. In the united states, more than 10% of our population is stalked at some point in their life. 89% of femicide victims who had been physically assaulted had also been stalked in the 12 months before their murder. 79% of abused femicide victims reported being stalked during the same period that they were abused. 54% of femicide victims reported stalking to police before they were killed by their stalkers. For months, Dorothy Jane Scott had received phone calls from the same mysterious admirer at her workplace. The voice sounded vaguely familiar, but she just couldn't place who it was. Sometimes he expressed fawning adoration, and other times, resentment and violence. He told her he was trailing her wherever she went, and he described details of her daily activities to prove it.
Growing up, life gets hard; you must pay bills, take care of yourself, and feed yourself daily. Some will stay at home with family while they finish college, some will work and go to school, and some fortune enough will live in dorms on campus while finishing their degree. But some will move in with roommates to help split the cost to keep a roof over their heads to make it through college.Loretta Saunders grew up in a Christian household; they did not own a television and would sit around the table reading scriptures from the bible every night. The girls weren't allowed to wear pants or cut their hair due to their religion. Loretta grew up with an indigenous ancestry and had strong ties to her culture, which led her to the path she found growing up. The Saunders were the family you would watch on tv, they were close knit and spent the summers on road trips, frog catching, and more. As the children got older, their parents would allow their friends to join them on the trips, and it wasn't long before the Saunders children discovered alcohol and drugs. From the outside looking in, the family seemed like the Brady brunch, one big happy family, but in the shadows, there was more than met the eye.
Halloween is the only day in a year when people around the world dress up, knock on doors in their neighborhood for candy, and decorate their homes like crime scenes. It's the day that the communities come together to celebrate. Halloween night in 1984 turned out to be a genuinely nightmarish one for the Erbert family in San Jose, California, as a family was celebrating a holiday filled with fun and spooky events. One family would soon see why opening the door for trick-or-treaters is not always the best idea. Doreen Rae Hitchens was born in Santa Clara, California, in 1952. She grew up in a very loving family. She had a job as a physical therapist, and that's how she met her first husband, Michael Dennis, also known as Mike. Michael Dennis worked at the Lockheed factory as a sprayer next door to Doreen's job. Mike had suffered from hearing loss, which often caused him to stutter. His friend, Jim Patriott told Snapped on Oxygen that Mike was depressed and he didn't socialize a lot. He didn't often have girlfriends, so when he met Doreen, he said he had found the one. After only a few months of dating, the couple got married, and Doreen soon gave birth to a baby boy, Paul Dennis. While Mike relished his role as a father, the stress of being new parents was too much for the young couple to withstand. They divorced in 1977, and Doreen retained primary custody of their son, who visited Mike on weekends. Mike cherished the time with his son, but he remained bitter about the divorce. On the other hand, Doreen quickly bounced back and married local carpet store owner Charles Erbert. The two had a daughter, Deanna Erbert, in 1979, raising her and Paul together. The couple was quickly starting to become a family and moved into a beautiful home within the community.

Allow me to welcome you to the neighborhood.” Derek and Maria Broaddus couldn't have been more excited to move into their dream house at 657 Boulevard in the well-to-do town of Westfield, New Jersey. But as the couple was preparing to settle into the $1.3-million house with their three children, they received this disturbing note in the mail. Signed only “The Watcher,” the letter had no return address. But whoever wrote it seemed to have been watching the Broadduses carefully. Before the family purchased “The Watcher House” in 2014, the Broadduses was a fairly average suburban family. Maria Broaddus had grown up in Westfield, New Jersey, just blocks away from the house at 657 Boulevard. On the other hand, Derek Broaddus had grown up in Maine in a working-class family. But from his humble beginnings, he had worked his way up to a position as a senior vice-president at a Manhattan insurance company. One night in June 2014, Derek Broaddus had just finished an evening of painting at his new home in Westfield, New Jersey, when he went outside to check the mail. A white, card-shaped envelope was addressed in thick, clunky handwriting to “The New Owner,” and the typed note inside began warmly:Dearest new neighbor at 657 Boulevard, Allow me to welcome you to the neighborhood.“Welcome to Murder By Nature, where we discuss True Crime, Mystery disappearances, and unsolved cases! I think there's too much in this case to cover all in one episode, but I'm going to do my best, so it's going to be a long one. This case had some breaking news come just in the last few days, and I got really emotional about that, but as I go through this case, I'm in the state just the facts and what we have through all the evidence that I've looked at the podcast of serial docu-series that they had made on it anything everything I was able to find to give you an unbiased opinion, and at the end, I'll state my opinion so stay tuned for the case of Hae min lee also known as the Adnan Syed case.References:HBO The case against Adnan SyedSerial Podcast Season 1allthatsinteresting.com/adnan-syed-murder-of-hae-min-leehttps://www.adnansyedwiki.com/https://www.adnansyedwiki.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Serial-Podcast-Transcripts-of-All-Episodes-with-ToC.pdfhttps://www.rootclaim.com/claims/serial-who-killed-hae-min-lee-11513https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Hae_Min_Leehttps://www.wsj.com/articles/adnan-syed-serial-podcast-vacate-murder-conviction-11663163015https://www.newsweek.com/adnan-syed-baltimore-prosecutors-move-vacate-conviction-1743065https://www.biography.com/news/adnan-syed-hae-min-lee-timeline-factsThe beginningOn Jan 13, 1999 Hae Min Lee disappeared. After she was going to go meet up with her boyfriend. Adnan and Hae's RelationshipAdnan and Hae started dating April 1, 1998 and kept it secret from their parents. Adnan asked Hae and she said yes, on the day of prom Adnan picked Hae up from her house to go to Anisha house to take pictures and all ride together. Nadja Medley, 44, lived for her teenage daughter Payton and only wanted the best for her child. Nadja was doing everything she could to make ends meet and provide for her daughter after her husband, Todd Medley, died of a heart attack on Aug. 30, 2014. Nadja Medley and her former husband had worked together in a pet store in Ogden before he died. Nadja was a massage therapist and also into healing things. She sold kombucha teas; on the side to promote a more healthy lifestyle. One day in 2015, Nadja's life would change forever when Gerald Michael Bullinger, a striking man, walked in for a massage. He had a presence, a great personality, and he was someone Nadja was attracted to instantly. Gerald seemed to have his life together. He was working as a private pilot for clients and flying all around the country for work. Gerald claimed to be a divorcée of 10 years and a Mormon from Montana. The attraction between the two was undeniable, and not only did the chemistry grow between them, but so did the relationship. As time marched on, Gerald went out of his way to take Nadja and her daughter to dinner, on hikes, and any other events they could share together and make new memories. Payten became so close with mike that she had even started calling him dad. During one of their hiking trips, Gerald taught Payton how to shoot, and they would play around on ground leg wrestling. Nadja had told friends that no matter how close they were during these outings, it was never the same in bed. Even though they lived very close to each other, they never slept over in each other's houses. At one point, Nadja asked Gerald for help with her mortgage. He ignored her the first two times, and the third time she asked, he said that their relationship was moving too fast and that he could not do it anymore. Nadja had also told friends that she once checked his paycheck, which was 10 thousand dollars a month. The argument over money later led to a brief separation, and two weeks later, Nadja shared Mike's texts to friends, telling her that separating was not the best for him and that he could not stay apart from her any longer.Due to work, Gerald was frequently out of town, but when he was home, the founding was unmatched. After almost two years. Gerald and Nadja decided it was time to move in together. Gerald had recently moved from Utah to a house at 216 S in Caldwell on May 3, 2017. Gerald wanted to make their life permanent, and she was on board for the open fields, horses, dogs, rabbits, and much more.
Kendrick Johnson was born on October 10, 1995, he lived with his family in Valdosta, Georgia, and attended Lowndes High School. His family and friends described him as a sweet and quiet boy. He was a three-sport athlete and dreamed of playing professional football. But those dreams were cut short when his body was found by students entering the gymnasium rolled up on a standing gym mat. His sneakers were shoved behind his knees. But investigators quickly closed their case on the theory that Johnson had fallen into the mat while reaching for one of his sneakers. The investigationOn January 11, 2013, the body of Kendrick Johnson was discovered in the gymnasium of Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia, headfirst in the center of a vertical rolled-up wrestling mat. The body was discovered by fellow students who had climbed up to the top of a cluster of mats, each of which stood nearly six feet tall and three feet wide. An autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) stated that Johnson had died from positional asphyxia, and the case was ruled an accidental death by the Lowndes County investigators.Authorities hypothesized that Johnson had fallen into the mat while looking for a shoe and died after being unable to get out. Three students at Lowndes High School told investigators that it was common for some students to store their shoes behind or under the rolled-up mats; Johnson was not wearing shoes when he was found. A student at the school said that he shared a pair of Adidas shoes with Johnson and that after gym class, Johnson would always "go to the mats, jump up and toss the shoes inside the middle of the hole." The mat in which Johnson was found was around six feet tall. The mat left a 14-inch hole in diameter in the center when rolled up. Johnson's shoulders measured 19 across and were five feet, ten inches tall. It seemed possible that if Kendrick was trying to squeeze into the center of the mat, he could have scrunched his shoulders together to make himself narrower. But his parents would later maintain that his size versus the size of the mat alone was enough to debunk the investigators' case. Almost a full day had passed until Johnson had been discovered. As he was upside down, blood would have rushed to Johnson's head, and he eventually would have begun to bleed from his facial orifices. One of the most baffling mysteries of this case: the black and white gym shoe that lay on the ground below Kendrick Johnson, the one he was presumed to be reaching for, was lying on top of a pool of blood, but there was no blood on the shoe itself. A hoodie and a pair of orange and black gym shoes were also found lying on the gym floor, as well as traces of blood on the wall nearby. Investigators tested the blood, revealing that it did not belong to Kendrick Johnson they stated that a girl had an incident in the gym due to the blood that was found and that the blood had likely been there for a long time. Even with the clothes found in the gym and the crime scene, they decided not to take the items into evidence.

The victims were mostly African Americans, typically employed as sex workers, and often had previous experiences with the justice system. Nearly all were strangled, partially or fully stripped, and then left in abandoned buildings, alleys, garbage bins, parks, or snowdrifts. Twenty-five of the cases were closed by police, resulting in the arrest of 13 men. Many strangulations were committed in just three police districts on Chicago's South and West sides. Areas with histories of violent crime and drug use, such as Washington Park and Garfield Park, have been common locations for these murders to occur. This pattern was recognized in 2018 through the Murder Accountability Project (MAP), which reviewed over 50 unsolved strangulation and asphyxiation cases dating back to 2001. The algorithm used by MAP sorts unsolved homicides by location, victim, and killing method to identify clusters associated with low homicide clearance rates. According to MAP, these factors could indicate an active serial killer. The Chicago police deny that any one person is behind the slayings. Others point to parallels across the murders, including location, method, and victimology, to suggest a Chicago serial killer has been terrorizing the streets for over two decades.

The southern California town certainly existed, although it abruptly “vanished” in 1930 and was replaced suddenly by Mira Loma. What had happened in the small town that rattle them to the core was the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders. Crimes so heinous that the townspeople couldn't bear to be associated with “Wineville” any longer.

Many of the workers and police investigators thought that it was some kind of joke or prank but soon discovered it was anything but a joke. The remains were identified as human, and they were the bones of someone around the ages of 13-17 years old. A jawbone was found on the sewer's ledge, and some teeth was still intact. The Redlands Police department didn't know what to do as they found the whole skeleton body throughout the drains. As police didn't know where to start, they decided to check the missing person reports when they found a report of a 14-year-old boy named Tristan Jensen, who was reported missing seven weeks earlier. Tristan Jensen was a 13-year-old boy from Redlands, CA, who had a rough life growing up. His mom died from cancer when he was four years old, and his dad was in county jail in Chino, CA. Tristan would eventually move in with his grandmother Betty Simon. Tristan's grandma's mother would raise him until he was 13 years old. At 13 years old Tristan moved with his aunt Shelly, and two cousins, Matthew and Brandon, lived next door. The family blended great, the cousins were raised as brothers, and the family was whole. Friends and students described Tristan as very popular, friendly, and someone who had the ability to become friends with anyone he met, and everyone wanted to be around him. He was known as a popular kid among the teachers and staff at Redlands High School. In August 1998, Tristan went missing. Always reliable, his family and friends had no idea where Tristan could be, and they contacted the police the following day. The family told police that Tristan had gone out to ride his skateboard, and they didn't hear from him or did he come home. They said they didn't initially panic as Tristan was responsible and always rode around the town. In spite of an intensive search, six weeks would pass before the family would hear anything about the missing teenager.

I have always been very hesitant to research this case due to my emotions towards this one. I have been a true crime fan since the lacey Peterson case, but this case and that one have always been super hard to discuss. Before jumping into the case, I want to stress that Shanann's social media is still up, and when you go to Facebook and like or try and comment, it brings that post back up to her friends on the platform. Please remember her family is active on Facebook; they see those comments and likes with photos of her and the murderer. They have commented numerous times to people not to like, comment, or share as this is still something they are processing and would not like to see those in their feeds. Shanann was an older sister to her brother Frankie, and her family was extremely close. Shanann was trying to make a name for herself in this world. Her family did not come from money, and she knew she would have to fight tooth and nail to give herself the life she dreamed of. Shanann purchased land in CO and built her first home alone until she met Leonard King. The two were married and attempted to build a life with each other, but from Shanann's side, she wasn't happy. Her confidence dropped, and she was left in a mess. Shanann and Leonard divorced in 2009. In 2010 Shanann was on Facebook when she got a friend request from Christopher Watts. She recalls, “What the heck? I'm never going to meet him. I have a ton of FB friends,” Chris continued to pursue Shanann to the point where she gave in. Chris and Shanann were married in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Nov 3rd, 2012, and by the following year, the couple was expecting their first child Bella. This was something that she had dreamed of for years. When Shanann was younger, she was diagnosed with Lupus and struggled hard with her illness. She stated that when she met Chris, she was at her lowest of lows, and he stuck by her accepting her for who she was. She couldn't imagine 3 short years later; they would welcome their first child into the world. Two years later, the couple welcomed their second daughter Celeste, {CeCe, on July 17, 2015.

Raymond “Rick” Gee was born in Decatur, GA, on Feb 27th, 1963. Ruth Ann Constant was born Sept. 11, 1970, in Lincoln to Dean Edward and Frances Everhart Constant. Together, they welcomed a son Austin in 1998 and a daughter named Jessica, and they would complete their family in 2006 with the birth of their daughter Tabitha. Unfortunately, Jessica suffered from a severe brain injury resulting in profound disabilities. She was eventually put into DCFS custody and admitted to a long-term care facility as a state ward. As the years passed, Nicole Rick's eldest daughter would marry a man named Christopher Harris, and they would welcome a daughter in 1990. The couple would develop a toxic relationship on and off marriage, but the pair would work through it and welcome their son in 2009. The now grandparents were excited to welcome their grandchildren into the family and continue to grow.
