“It was fantastic to open my eyes to the differences in hospitality, the differences of properties - meeting other cultures, foods, everything. But having been there and having worked abroad, I think the main pillars remained with me from Irish hospitality - good food, good welcome and doing everything you can for your guests.” We're in lucky company with Peter Barrett, 4th Generation Owner and General Manager of Dunmore House, an award-winning, 4-star hotel on the Clonakilty Bay shores of West Cork, Ireland. Many changes have unfolded over the years since his great-grandparents came across this coastal farm in 1934, however, the one thing that has not changed is “family welcoming family”. Having recently returned home from global studies and luxury hospitality experiences, Peter shares his excitement in continuing his family legacy, reciting the Irish Proverb “Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin,” as for him and the ways in which he treats his guests, “there's no place like home.” Today, as many like me celebrate their Irish Heritage, and many more celebrate an excuse to drink a smooth pint of Guinness, Peter and I banter about what makes Irish hospitality recognizable around the world, how the vista views from Dunmore House are unmatched, and why travelers should not pass up new Irish cuisine. Sláinte! Top Takeaways [1:40] A story that spans across numerous generations started as a working farm shortly after the Irish War of Independence, slowly turning into a community gathering spot for wedding breakfasts, growing into a proper hotel in the 1960s, of which the Dunmore House stands true to today. [10:00] Peter shares the fortune he sees in his hospitality upbringing and how his time away from home - studying in Switzerland and working in Hong Kong, Thailand and the United States - gave him a fresh perspective and newfound appreciation for Irish hospitality. [15:00] Expect to stay in a setting that is a “home away from home” - with familiar characters that will treat you as family, warmth felt from the welcome to the wood fireplace, food that will fill your stomach and your soul. [17:30] Everything from the amenities in the rooms to the produce picked from the gardens is proudly Irish. Peter explains how there is a sense of sustainability and stewardship that comes with owning a property and being a part of a community for many generations. Cappy Thompson is an internationally acclaimed Seattle artist known for her mythopoetic narratives on glass created via the grisaille painting technique. Early in her career, she was drawn to the images and symbols of the medieval period, inspired by the Christian tradition of Western Europe as well as the content of Hindu, Pagan, Judaic, Buddhist and Islamic painting. In more recent years, the artist has moved away from mythological narrative and toward compositions on vessels that draw upon images and themes from her personal life. Thus began an autobiographical exploration of world culture and spirituality that continues to the present. Thompson states: “For me, as a narrative painter, the issue has always been content. The issue wasn't glass, the material that I chose some 45 years ago. Nor was it the painting technique—grisaille or gray-tonal painting—that I taught myself to use. My work—which spans several decades and a variety of scales from the intimate to the monumental—has always been driven by content.” Born in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1952, Thompson grew up in Seattle and attended the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, where she received her BA in 1976 in painting and printmaking. Basically self-taught, her first professional exposure to glass came in 1975 when she worked for a small studio in Olympia. For several years she learned and worked in solitude until her reputation brought her to the attention of glass artists Charles Parriott, Therman Statom and Dale Chihuly. In 1984 Thompson moved back to Seattle, and her subsequent exposure to artists at Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, Washington, led her to painting on vessel forms. Thompson's work can be found in collections worldwide, including those of the Corning Museum of Glass, Tacoma Art Museum, Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, the Chrysler Museum of Art, Museum of Art and Design, and the Microsoft Corporation. Recent exhibitions include Indie Folk: New Art and Songs from the Pacific Northwest, held at The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at Washington State University, Pullman, 2022; The Schneider Museum of Art, Ashland, Oregon, 2022; and Fluid Formations, Whatcom Museum, Bellingham, Washington, on view in 2021. Public commissions include large-scale installations at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Evergreen State College, and Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. In 2019, Thompson designed, fabricated and installed eight painted glass windows for Salk Middle School, Spokane, Washington, a project commissioned by Washington State Arts Commission in partnership with Spokane School District. A recipient of an NEA fellowship, the Libensky Award, and Pilchuck's John Hauberg Fellowship, Thompson has also been artist in residence at Pilchuck and at Toyama City Institute. She has served on the Bellevue Arts Museum Advisory Council, the Board of Directors of the Glass Art Society and Pilchuck Glass School's Artistic Program Advisory Committee and continues serving on the Board of Directors for Pottery Northwest. She has taught workshops around the world at Bildwerk, Frauenau, Germany; California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, California; Canberra School of Art, Canberra, Australia; Centro del Arte Vitro, Monterrey, Mexico; Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia; International Glass Center, Dudley College, Stourbridge, England; National Sculpture Factory, Cork Ireland; National College of Arts and Design, Dublin, Ireland; Northlands Creative Glass Center, Lybster, Scotland; Penland School of Crafts, Penland, North Carolina; Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, Washington; and many more. Though each piece tells its own story, there is one general message Thompson tries to convey with her work: “I see now, after more than three decades of work, that I am like those medieval painters striving to express magnificence and beauty. But my expression focuses on the human experience of goodness, of hope and of love.”

Introduction: I interviewed Micheal O Driscoll, Managing Director at FDC, Financial Services LTD. FDC is the Farm Development Co-op headquartered in Cork Ireland. It employs 300 people over 30 locations in Ireland. Podcast episode summary: This episode was recorded as Ireland was moving out of lockdown as a result of Covid-19. Micheal shared how he and his team responded by being early adopters of technology and deciding early on that it was business as usual. We discussed what distinguishes FDC as a Financial Services service provider from some of the bigger players and how culture is so important to inculcate in the business. In addition, Micheal shared his passion for Epic Cycling, Triathlons and the fact that he has completed 5 full Iron man distance races. Points made through the episode: Micheal joined FDC 25 years ago after a thorough grounding in Financial Services in London working for Grand met and Pall Mall Wealth Management. He joined FDC when it already had a well -established Agricultural consultancy business, started in 1973 by Jack Murphy. His role was to build out the financial Services business. He impressed on me that unlike other Financial Services businesses FDC supports the sustainability of inter-generational wealth management. Relationship Management is paramount to enduring relations. Give a service and Repeat-Repeat-Repeat Impact of Covid-19 on portfolio of clients was significant. FDC was quick to make sure it stayed in contact with everyone. Learnt how to navigate online quickly and FDC was lucky it had already moved to purchase technology to support all staff Communication was a challenge -FDC needed to learn how to communicate with each other internally first. A huge learning and it served to bust some myths about remote teamwork. Working from home in a structured way is possible even with the demands of home life. FDC learnt that capability of staff is such that staff can be trusted to work without supervision and deliver. FDC made material adjustments to its business and will continue to operate a blend of remote working and in office working post Covid-19 Other benefits included getting a deeper insight into his own staff that ordinarily might not have proved possible. People will hide in plain sight and that is true whether you are working in or out of an office. FDC realised that they can meet future challenges with the talent of staff they possess. The digital journey for FDC and their clients has simply been accelerated and many myths and biases have been blown away. Magic Intimacy is what FDC aims for with its clients -The fintech of the world will always be a threat which underscores importance of a trustworthy brand and the service it provides. Management by control, order and exactness only goes so far and is insufficient if a company wants to grow. Micheal accepts that his earlier management style was too controlling, and he needed to learn how to trust and empower others Sport helped. He learnt quickly on some of his Epic cycling journeys to know when he had done enough and when he could allow someone else to take over the reigns He also learnt that a race across America is simply a large project broken down into portion sized segments.
