Golden Voice Robin Miles and Moe Egan do fine work narrating Linda Gartz's revealing memoir of Chicago's West Garfield Park and the author's life, family, and experiences with race relations—especially during the 1960s. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss this story of family and policy. Egan voices the author and her timbre, tone, and style are just right. The supremely talented Miles narrates the many African American voices and does them very well. This is mostly a family story of striving German Americans who stay in Garfield Park despite urban blight, which is enabled by the federal redlining policies that were crafted to harm housing opportunities for Black Americans. fWotD Episode 2526: Marshfield station Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Thursday, 4 April 2024 is Marshfield station.Marshfield was a rapid transit station on the Chicago "L" in service between 1895 and 1954. Constructed by the Metropolitan West Side Elevated Railroad, it was the westernmost station of the Metropolitan's main line, which then diverged into three branches. Marshfield was also served by the Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad (CA&E), an interurban, between 1905 and 1953.The Metropolitan, one of four companies operating the "L", handed its lines over to the Chicago Elevated Railways (CER) trust in 1911. The companies forming the trust formally merged into the Chicago Rapid Transit Company (CRT) in 1924, which continued operation of the "L" until it was taken over by the publicly-held Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) in 1947. The CA&E was a descendant of the Aurora Elgin and Chicago Railway (AE&C), which split into the CA&E in 1921.Overhauls to the Metropolitan's lines, planned since the 1930s, replaced the Logan Square branch with a subway to go directly downtown and substitute a rapid transit right-of-way in the median of the Eisenhower for the main line and Garfield Park branch. Construction of these new lines was piecemeal, as was the end of service to Marshfield; Logan Square trains were diverted in 1951, as was Garfield Park and CA&E service in 1953. This left Douglas Park trains as the sole traffic at Marshfield until April 1954, when they too used a temporary right-of-way to go downtown. The Congress Line opened in 1958; the junction that Marshfield had served was maintained between the new line and the Douglas Park branch, but the station prior to this divergence was located on Racine Avenue, significantly to the east of Marshfield Avenue. An entrance to the Medical Center station on the new line was located on Paulina Street, a block west of Marshfield Avenue. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:37 UTC on Thursday, 4 April 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Marshfield station on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Niamh Neural.

She currently practices at the cross-discipline office of Dr. Harold Diaz, M.D. at HD Medical Spa & Clinic www.hdmedspaclinic.com along with napropath, Dr. Michael Venice, N.D.  Erin is originally from Chicago, and grew up in New Orleans. She made Chicago her home again when she pursued studies at Loyola University Chicago. She received her B.A. in English Literature and pre med studies as well as her M.Ed. in Community Counseling from Loyola University Graduate School of Education. In school she specialized in trauma studies, primary attachments in children and adult recovery from childhood traumas. She began to focus upon the interplay of trauma as it pertains to formative attachments.  Erin has been working with trauma survivors since 2002 as the counseling intern at an underserved urban elementary school near Garfield Park in Chicago. She was published in 2002 in The American Journal of Psychotherapy “Learning the ‘Impossible Task' of Psychotherapy”. She was also invited to join Spirit in Flight in 2003, a healing retreat for flight attendants from American and United Airlines who were directly involved in the events of 9/11.  Erin's work has expanded to include clients who handle eating disorders, early developmental and attachment ruptures, complex trauma, career path counseling and life transitions. In addition to training interns, peer supervision and, presenting at conferences she consults and provides workshops for corporations and schools.  Her focus has begun to turn towards releasing a client's blocks to abundance. She assists her clients in creating abundance in specific realms – financial, career, family, and relationships. She describes her work as brief, focused and oriented entirely towards what her clients wish to accomplish.  Erin has had a gift for healing others since she could remember which led her to study as a psychotherapist. Erin became interested in the body-based aspect of psychotherapy in working with trauma and eating disorders. She noticed how separately the body and the psyche were approached.  From there, she sought and received 5 years training in Somatic Experience therapy and bodywork techniques www.traumahealing.org . She is now an assistant in the S.E. trainings. Erin is also trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) when she joined the treatment team at The Awakening Center. IFS incorporates the physical awareness and Self Energy and DBT balances mindfulness, emotional regulation, reframing and proactive behavioral approaches to stress in the mind and body. But it seemed like there was more to the work she wanted to do. She knew that her clients with eating disorders were struggling to find freedom from attack on body mind and spirit.  In addition to traditional psychotherapy,  Erin sought training to enhance her healing and psychic gifts from childhood. Erin's curiosity about the body-mind connection led her to training in healing energy work. She became an intuitive healer, spiritual coach and incorporates awareness of energy into her counseling work. Consciousness, energy awareness, intuition and guided imagery became a doorway to learning about consciousness, meditation, and even psychic training. She meets her clients where they want to begin.

Jackie Hoffman is from the Garfield Park neighborhood, on Chicago's West Side. It's only three miles from the trendy West Loop, but as Jackie says, it's “the other side of America.” The West Loop is known for its restaurant scene, while Garfield Park doesn't even have a grocery store. The average life expectancy for West Loop residents is 85; it's 67 in Garfield Park. That statistic is personal for Jackie. Worried by his mother's unhealthy lifestyle as she approached that age, he created a diet and exercise plan for her. Then, encouraged by its success, he expanded his outreach. He founded Peace Runners 773, a non-profit that brings awareness to holistic health and wellbeing while creating safe spaces for movement in underserved communities. Josh has owned and/or operated many music related businesses since 2000, a record label, a record manufacturer/distributor, a music festival company, multiple music venues, a digital marketing company, and now, restaurants. He has launched the careers of young Indianapolis artists, attracted hundreds of national and international music artists to perform in Indianapolis, and even transformed public spaces like Garfield Park into national music venues. I hope you enjoy this discussion about Josh's life in music, and about the potential he sees for Indianapolis to grow its music identity and music economy. (Note: this episode is dedicated to Josh's and my friend Brent Warnecke, who passed away this week.)

The victims were mostly African Americans, typically employed as sex workers, and often had previous experiences with the justice system. Nearly all were strangled, partially or fully stripped, and then left in abandoned buildings, alleys, garbage bins, parks, or snowdrifts. Twenty-five of the cases were closed by police, resulting in the arrest of 13 men. Many strangulations were committed in just three police districts on Chicago's South and West sides. Areas with histories of violent crime and drug use, such as Washington Park and Garfield Park, have been common locations for these murders to occur. This pattern was recognized in 2018 through the Murder Accountability Project (MAP), which reviewed over 50 unsolved strangulation and asphyxiation cases dating back to 2001. The algorithm used by MAP sorts unsolved homicides by location, victim, and killing method to identify clusters associated with low homicide clearance rates. According to MAP, these factors could indicate an active serial killer. The Chicago police deny that any one person is behind the slayings. Others point to parallels across the murders, including location, method, and victimology, to suggest a Chicago serial killer has been terrorizing the streets for over two decades.

Homicides this year in Chicago are on track to be similar to last year, one of the deadliest years in decades, and carjackings are up 50 percent. Some residents want more police on the streets, on the CTA, and in neighborhoods. But there's also pressure to invest in mental health facilities, community development, and alternatives to police. In an attempt to address concerns, the city is hosting a series of town halls across Chicago. So far, there has been a virtual meeting for North and Northwest Side residents, and in-person events at Garfield Park on the West Side and Chicago State University on the South Side. These town halls aren't new, so are residents really getting the answers they are looking for? Producer Simone Alicea has been covering the town halls and answers that question.  Public Safety Town Halls Some Good News: Jacoby hosts "The Moth" at Evanston SPACE Follow us on Twitter: @CityCastChicago Sign up for our newsletter: chicago.citycast.fm Call or Text Us: (773) 780-0246 Learn more about your ad choices.
