Johnson School of Public Affairs and a leading expert on Chechnya, the North Caucasus insurgency, and the Russo-Chechen Wars. In addition to over twenty years of research in the region, Dr. Dennis spent over five years living with Chechen rebels and refugees in the Pankisi Gorge along the Chechen border with the Republic of Georgia, and displaced Chechen communities in Azerbaijan, Belgium, Poland, and Turkey, exploring the conditions under which displaced populations attitudinally support political violence. His post-doctoral research focused on Chechen attitudes towards foreign fighters in Ukraine and Syria. During the Second Russo-Chechen War (1999 to 2009), he served as a volunteer aid-worker the International Rescue Committee (IRC) tasked with leading a team to help re-build water, sanitation, and education infrastructure in war-torn Chechnya and provide subsistence support to tens of thousands of Chechen refugees living in the neighboring republic of Ingushetia. From 2004 to 2011, he co-directed the Chechnya Advocacy Network, an international humanitarian non-government organization created to improve human rights and security in Chechnya, provide legal and asylum procedure assistance for Chechen refugees, conduct research on issues related to the Russo-Chechen Wars, and raise awareness and funds to improve infrastructure, physical and psychological rehabilitation, and education in the Republic of Chechnya. Dr. Dennis's research has been published in Security Studies and referenced in Foreign Affairs, and he recently completed an academic book manuscript based on his decades-long work with Chechen refugees. He holds a Ph.D. in Government from The University of Texas at Austin, an M.A. in Political Science from Miami University (Ohio), and studied at Novgorod State University in Russia, and the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. He is a former Fulbright Scholar and speaks Chechen and Russian. PRODUCER'S NOTE: This episode was recorded on November 3, 2023 at The University of Texas at Austin. Michael Dennis blamed his ex-wife, Doreen Erbert for the tragic and sudden death of their son, Paul, who accidentally drowned in their family swimming pool. Although both of them deeply mourned the loss of their child, Doreen attempted to move on, and began a family with her new husband, Charles. But on Halloween night in 1984, a man in a wolf mask armed with a machete put an end to any hope Doreen still carried. Get a FREE personalized quote at ethoslife.com/KILLER Check out our new hoodies! Halloween is the only day in a year when people around the world dress up, knock on doors in their neighborhood for candy, and decorate their homes like crime scenes. It's the day that the communities come together to celebrate. Halloween night in 1984 turned out to be a genuinely nightmarish one for the Erbert family in San Jose, California, as a family was celebrating a holiday filled with fun and spooky events. One family would soon see why opening the door for trick-or-treaters is not always the best idea. Doreen Rae Hitchens was born in Santa Clara, California, in 1952. She grew up in a very loving family. She had a job as a physical therapist, and that's how she met her first husband, Michael Dennis, also known as Mike. Michael Dennis worked at the Lockheed factory as a sprayer next door to Doreen's job. Mike had suffered from hearing loss, which often caused him to stutter. His friend, Jim Patriott told Snapped on Oxygen that Mike was depressed and he didn't socialize a lot. He didn't often have girlfriends, so when he met Doreen, he said he had found the one. After only a few months of dating, the couple got married, and Doreen soon gave birth to a baby boy, Paul Dennis. While Mike relished his role as a father, the stress of being new parents was too much for the young couple to withstand. They divorced in 1977, and Doreen retained primary custody of their son, who visited Mike on weekends. Mike cherished the time with his son, but he remained bitter about the divorce. On the other hand, Doreen quickly bounced back and married local carpet store owner Charles Erbert. The two had a daughter, Deanna Erbert, in 1979, raising her and Paul together. The couple was quickly starting to become a family and moved into a beautiful home within the community.
William Michael Dennis was grieving and depressed, but instead of getting help for his problems, he blamed other people and tried to make them pay for his unhappiness. CW: this episode contains graphic crime scene descriptions, the accidental death of a child, and the violent murder of a pregnant woman On Halloween night, 1984, police in San Jose, California responded to a scene one would later describe as a "Halloween horror show" in the front hallway of Charles and Doreen Erbert's suburban home. In the corner of the crime scene, near the door, lay a rubber mask in the shape of a cartoon wolf's head. This is a story of tragedy that lead to vengeful murder on Halloween night. This time we are talking to Michael Dennis about his career as company stage manager, and his extensive experience of touring theatre at all scales. We hear about the daily minutiae of managing an acting company, the challenges of making sure everyone feels listened to, and how the CSM is never really fully off duty. We discuss touring theatre in the UK, and the rich and invaluable experience it represents. We also undo years of therapy by reminiscing about theatrical digs...

Your host Toby Hadoke is very tired on this one, so he barely has the energy for a Highland fling. Hopefully he makes up for his lack of energy in the post-commentary coda. And fortunately, brilliant guest Michael Dennis (who wrote for Mark Gatiss' excellent Queers anthology of monologues) is on hand to be far more interesting, eloquent and, well, awake than Toby is. Hopefully those of you less familiar with this story come away with a newfound appreciation for it after this. And that one of you has it in your attic.
"There is no such thing as Happy Times and Place 37.2" etc. Of course there is. And this is it. a rewarding look at an under appreciated story with special guest Michael Dennis, who has worked extensively in theatre as a company manager and is an excellent writer too. But will host Toby Hadoke manage to stay in control...?
Your host Toby Hadoke to work himself up to do this one - a story he has always enjoyed (and really had a good time with in his book Running Through Corridors). This time though, it felt like it was going to be a chore as it is all telesnaps and guesswork. So he grits his teeth and off he goes, with the delightful and insightful Michael Dennis - playwright and theatre fellow - as company... and boy are the results worth it. Not a story many people talk about, The Macra Terror, and that's a shame, because there's a lot to like. There's also a lot to guess!

In this weeks sermon pastor Michael Dennis walks us through Philippians 1:27-30. We look at 3 main takeaways from the message: Stand Firm (vs 27) Spunk (vs 28) Suffering (vs 29-30) Summary: Our immediate thought on life is that God's role in our life is to protect us from suffering, opposition, hardship but verse 29 is teaching that our suffering in life is a gift of God's grace in our life. How's that possible? It's because the God of Scripture knows our hearts and minds will easily latch on to the sparkly things of this world that will not last. We don't just love romance; we give up everything for romance. We don't just love our careers we become workacholic. We don't just love our hobbies, we become obsessive. We don't just eat food, we become gluttonous. Our hearts and minds will latch on to the things of this world and they won't last, and the Lord knows they won't last. We know they won't last. Relationships come and go. Careers come and go. Hobbies are great until we get old and our bodies fade, our minds fade. The economy is up and down. The politicians are hit and miss. The things of this world are fleeting, and the Lord knows the things of this world are fleeting. Therefore, the God of Scripture, the creator of all things will absolutely bring the gift of suffering into our life, not because He hates us, but because He loves us and He wants to show us that He is the only part of life that we can hold on to for eternity, therefore, the Apostle Paul writes, “29 For to you it has been granted for Christ's sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake.”

A promising avenue for improving the robustness of RL agents is through the use of curricula. One such class of methods frames environment design as a game between a student and a teacher, using regret-based objectives to produce environment instantiations (or levels) at the frontier of the student agent's capabilities. These methods benefit from their generality, with theoretical guarantees at equilibrium, yet they often struggle to find effective levels in challenging design spaces. By contrast, evolutionary approaches seek to incrementally alter environment complexity, resulting in potentially open-ended learning, but often rely on domain-specific heuristics and vast amounts of computational resources. In this paper we propose to harness the power of evolution in a principled, regret-based curriculum. Our approach, which we call Adversarially Compounding Complexity by Editing Levels (ACCEL), seeks to constantly produce levels at the frontier of an agent's capabilities, resulting in curricula that start simple but become increasingly complex. ACCEL maintains the theoretical benefits of prior regret-based methods, while providing significant empirical gains in a diverse set of environments. There is a saying “watch what you ask for, you will get it.” As a young boy, Michael Dennis began speaking to God, seeking answers, advice and help to get away from a “terrible,” abusive home. One day God began communicating back. Michael Dennis' book, “Morning coffee with God,” includes those profound, uplifting (there is humor, too) communications which helped heal and transform his life and he hopes the book will inspire you to God as well. This presentation is from the 2010 Ozark Mountain Transformation Conference.FOLLOW US ON:Facebook: https://goo.gl/rwvBfwInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/ozarkmtpubTwitter: https://goo.gl/LunK5DWebsite: https://goo.gl/2d5cX4ASSOCIATED LINKS:Ozark Mountain Publishing, Inc.: https://goo.gl/xhgoAPQuantum Healing Hypnosis Academy: https://goo.gl/64G7RD
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: What counts as defection?, published by Alex Turner on the AI Alignment Forum. Thanks to Michael Dennis for proposing the formal definition; to Andrew Critch for pointing me in this direction; to Abram Demski for proposing non-negative weighting; and to Alex Appel, Scott Emmons, Evan Hubinger, philh, Rohin Shah, and Carroll Wainwright for their feedback and ideas. There's a good chance I'd like to publish this at some point as part of a larger work. However, I wanted to make the work available now, in case that doesn't happen soon. They can't prove the conspiracy... But they could, if Steve runs his mouth. The police chief stares at you. You stare at the table. You'd agreed (sworn!) to stay quiet. You'd even studied game theory together. But, you hadn't understood what an extra year of jail meant. The police chief stares at you. Let Steve be the gullible idealist. You have a family waiting for you. Sunlight stretches across the valley, dappling the grass and warming your bow. Your hand anxiously runs along the bowstring. A distant figure darts between trees, and your stomach rumbles. The day is near spent. The stags run strong and free in this land. Carla should meet you there. Shouldn't she? Who wants to live like a beggar, subsisting on scraps of lean rabbit meat? In your mind's eye, you reach the stags, alone. You find one, and your arrow pierces its barrow. The beast shoots away; the rest of the herd follows. You slump against the tree, exhausted, and never open your eyes again. You can't risk it. People talk about 'defection' in social dilemma games, from the prisoner's dilemma to stag hunt to chicken. In the tragedy of the commons, we talk about defection. The concept has become a regular part of LessWrong discourse. Informal definition. A player defects when they increase their personal payoff at the expense of the group. This informal definition is no secret, being echoed from the ancient Formal Models of Dilemmas in Social Decision-Making to the recent Classifying games like the Prisoner's Dilemma: you can model the "defect" action as "take some value for yourself, but destroy value in the process". Given that the prisoner's dilemma is the bread and butter of game theory and of many parts of economics, evolutionary biology, and psychology, you might think that someone had already formalized this. However, to my knowledge, no one has. Formalism Consider a finite n -player normal-form game, with player i having pure action set A i and payoff function P i A 1 × × A n → R . Each player i chooses a strategy s i ∈ Δ A i (a distribution over A i ). Together, the strategies form a strategy profile s s 1 s n s − i s 1 s i − 1 s i 1 s n is the strategy profile, excluding player i 's strategy. A payoff profile contains the payoffs for all players under a given strategy profile. A utility weighting α j j 1 n is a set of n non-negative weights (as in Harsanyi's utilitarian theorem). You can consider the weights as quantifying each player's contribution; they might represent a percieved social agreement or be the explicit result of a bargaining process. When all α j are equal, we'll call that an equal weighting. However, if there are "utility monsters", we can downweight them accordingly. We're implicitly assuming that payoffs are comparable across players. We want to investigate: given a utility weighting, which actions are defections? Definition. Player i 's action a ∈ A i is a defection against strategy profile s and weighting α j j 1 n if Personal gain: P i a s − i P i s i s − i Social loss: ∑ j α j P j a s − i ∑ j α j P j s i s − i If such an action exists for some player i , strategy profile s , and weighting, then we say that there is an opportunity for defection in the game. Remark. For an equal weighting, condition (2) is equivalent to demanding that the action n...
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Non-Obstruction: A Simple Concept Motivating Corrigibility, published by Alex Turner on the AI Alignment Forum. Thanks to Mathias Bonde, Tiffany Cai, Ryan Carey, Michael Cohen, Joe Collman, Andrew Critch, Abram Demski, Michael Dennis, Thomas Gilbert, Matthew Graves, Koen Holtman, Evan Hubinger, Victoria Krakovna, Amanda Ngo, Rohin Shah, Adam Shimi, Logan Smith, and Mark Xu for their thoughts. Main claim: corrigibility's benefits can be mathematically represented as a counterfactual form of alignment. Overview: I'm going to talk about a unified mathematical frame I have for understanding corrigibility's benefits, what it “is”, and what it isn't. This frame is precisely understood by graphing the human overseer's ability to achieve various goals (their attainable utility (AU) landscape). I argue that corrigibility's benefits are secretly a form of counterfactual alignment (alignment with a set of goals the human may want to pursue). A counterfactually aligned agent doesn't have to let us literally correct it. Rather, this frame theoretically motivates why we might want corrigibility anyways. This frame also motivates other AI alignment subproblems, such as intent alignment, mild optimization, and low impact. Nomenclature Corrigibility goes by a lot of concepts: “not incentivized to stop us from shutting it off”, “wants to account for its own flaws”, “doesn't take away much power from us”, etc. Named by Robert Miles, the word ‘corrigibility' means “able to be corrected [by humans]." I'm going to argue that these are correlates of a key thing we plausibly actually want from the agent design, which seems conceptually simple. In this post, I take the following common-language definitions: Corrigibility: the AI literally lets us correct it (modify its policy), and it doesn't manipulate us either. Without both of these conditions, the AI's behavior isn't sufficiently constrained for the concept to be useful. Being able to correct it is small comfort if it manipulates us into making the modifications it wants. An AI which is only non-manipulative doesn't have to give us the chance to correct it or shut it down. Impact alignment: the AI's actual impact is aligned with what we want. Deploying the AI actually makes good things happen. Intent alignment: the AI makes an honest effort to figure out what we want and to make good things happen. I think that these definitions follow what their words mean, and that the alignment community should use these (or other clear groundings) in general. Two of the more important concepts in the field (alignment and corrigibility) shouldn't have ambiguous and varied meanings. If the above definitions are unsatisfactory, I think we should settle upon better ones as soon as possible. If that would be premature due to confusion about the alignment problem, we should define as much as we can now and explicitly note what we're still confused about. We certainly shouldn't keep using 2+ definitions for both alignment and corrigibility. Some people have even stopped using ‘corrigibility' to refer to corrigibility! I think it would be better for us to define the behavioral criterion (e.g. as I defined 'corrigibility'), and then define mechanistic ways of getting that criterion (e.g. intent corrigibility). We can have lots of concepts, but they should each have different names. Evan Hubinger recently wrote a great FAQ on inner alignment terminology. We won't be talking about inner/outer alignment today, but I intend for my usage of "impact alignment" to roughly map onto his "alignment", and "intent alignment" to map onto his usage of "intent alignment." Similarly, my usage of "impact/intent alignment" directly aligns with the definitions from Andrew Critch's recent post, Some AI research areas and their relevance to existential safety. A Simple Concept Mo...

One of the unfulfilled goals of the American left during the 1930s was that of an economy in which every American would enjoy the opportunity for gainful employment. In The Full Employment Horizon in 20th-Century America: The Movement for Economic Democracy (Bloomsbury, 2021), Michael Dennis describes the origins of the movement, the efforts made to achieve it, and the factors that frustrated its realization. Dennis traces its beginnings to a progressive critique of industrial capitalism in the 1920s, which warned of the growing disparity between rising productivity and stagnant wages. During the Great Depression, groups from across the political left took up the cause of full employment, campaigning for legislation to ensure that jobs could be had by all. When President Franklin Roosevelt called in 1944 for a right to a job as part of his Economic Bill of Rights, it seemed as though full employment was close to realization, only for its prospects to be dashed in the late 1940s by opposition from business, Southern conservatives, and Republicans. Moribund in the immediate post-World War II era, the full employment movement gained new life in the 1960s as civil rights activists adopted it as part of their cause. By the 1970s, their hopes took form with the Humphrey-Hawkins bill, which was advocated as a solution to gender segregation and racial exclusion. As Dennis details, though, its ambitious ideas of participatory democracy were opposed by not just the traditional opponents of the full employment movement but mainstream organized labor as well. Without the grassroots efforts that had characterized it during the 1930s the movement lacked the social foundation to push back against this, resulting in the passage of a bill lacking the means of turning its ambitious aspirations into reality. While the full employment cause suffered in the neoliberal age that followed, Dennis notes how the idea persisted into the 21st century, when it was revitalized in the aftermath of the 2008 recession as a response to the economic challenges facing the country. In this weeks episode of the Warship Podcast special guest Senpai, comes in 'virtually' to grace us with his teachings and lessons from the recent King of the Seas tournament. The recent news cycle for World of Warships has been a bit slow as of late and as such the Podcast chose to skip last week. This week however the crew goes over the recent changes to the test ships, mainly the lower tier Russian Battleships and the breaking news announcement about premium ships and potential changes. Thank you to everyone of you who supports this show and the Warships community and we sincerely hope to see you again on the next Warships Podcast! Episode 24 sees us assigned to Hartley police station as Warren joins us to investigate the changing face of 'Juliet Bravo'. We begin by looking in detail at 'Shot Gun', the very first episode starring Stephanie Turner as Inspector Jean Darblay. We welcome Michael Dennis, who gives us some bonus thoughts on 'Shot Gun', then we take a trip to the Moon as Martin Holmes casts his eye over the opening 'Space : 1999' episode 'Breakaway'. Then, to round off, Warren returns as we jump to Series 4 of 'Juliet Bravo', with 'Teamwork' starring Anna Carteret as Inspector Kate Longton.
We were so excited to finally get to interview our mentor and friend Michael Dennis of X-Pools. There is a ton of great advice in this episode. Michael has 20+ years in the industry and if we could have made this episode 3 hours, we would have! He is a true pioneer for our industry here in Arizona and we love that we get to share his story. We talk about X-Pools and their company culture. Which has always been Michael’s number one priority. He wanted and has a great team behind him. He has created a culture where people love to come to work and in this industry, especially in the heat of AZ is very impressive. We have adopted several of his methods ourselves. We talk about having strong structures in place, business coaches, and important people to have close by you to solidify your company. Michael also loves to test products on his personal pool and uses it as a training ground for his employees. He focused on automation from the very beginning and is always our go to guy when we have a question. He has been in the warranty game since the beginning, so we talk about the ups and downs of being a warranty station. Michael has been a strong supporter of breast cancer awareness for a long time. We discuss his 3 major events he puts on each year. You can help support his cause by going to badgirlsdogoodthings.org You can find the 3 books Michael recommended below: “Raving Fans” by Ken Blanchard: https://amzn.to/2GINW0o “One Minute Manager” by Ken Blanchard: https://amzn.to/2GJUUWT “The Great Game of Business” by Jack Stack: https://amzn.to/2qh1vxU See you out there Pool Chasers!
