Inhalt: Ein Ereignis aus seiner Kindheit verfolgt Schriftsteller Ben Mears bis heute. Auf der Suche nach Inspiration für sein nächstes Buch kehrt er in seine Heimatstadt Jerusalem's Lot zurück. Er will ins alte Marsten-Haus einziehen, das auf einem Hügel steht und das man sehen kann, egal wo in der Stadt man sich aufhält, und in welchem Ben als Kind ein traumatisches Erlebnis hatte. Doch kaum in der Stadt angekommen, erfährt Mears, dass ihm jemand zuvorgekommen ist. Der dubiose Antiquitätenhändler Richard Straker hat es für sich und seinen geheimnisvollen Geschäftspartner gekauft, den allerdings noch niemand gesehen hat.
