Hi everyone, welcome back to TV Reload! I truly appreciate you tuning in for today’s episode, featuring two powerhouse content creators at the top of their game in scripted drama—John Polson and Bruna Papandrea. They join me to discuss their latest project, The Last Anniversary. Bruna Papandrea is an acclaimed Australian film and television producer and the founder of Made Up Stories. Before that, she co-founded Pacific Standard with Reese Witherspoon. Her impressive resume speaks for itself, with hits like Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers etc. The list goes on. Plus the feature film, The Dry, and the sequel to that, Force of Nature. It’s an absolute honour to have her here to discuss this exciting new TV series, now streaming on Binge and Foxtel. Joining her is John Polson, the director of The Last Anniversary. I’ve been a huge fan of his work since the ’90s, ever since I saw him in The Sum of Us alongside Russell Crowe. Over the years, John has made a remarkable transition behind the camera, working out of New York and making a significant impact in film and television. He’s also the creative force behind Tropfest, the world’s largest short film festival, which has supported countless emerging filmmakers. In this episode: • Bruna shares her favourite Liane Moriarty book and the three key elements she looks for when choosing a story. • John explains how directing a TV series differs from filmmaking and what unique challenges come with signing onto a project like this. • We uncover some fascinating behind-the-scenes details—Did Liane Moriarty want a role in the series? Has Bruna ever considered acting herself? • Plus, we’ll discuss the stellar cast, including Miranda Richardson, why this series has a broader appeal than some of Bruna’s past projects, and an update on Big Little Lies Season 3 (which Liane just finished writing this week!). There’s so much to dive into, with plenty of exclusive insights. So sit back, relax, and enjoy as we explore the incredible world of The Last Anniversary, streaming weekly on Binge and Foxtel!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this RE-LISTEN episode Elaine chats with actor, writer, director Virginia Gay. We talk about Virginia's Fringe First award winning show Cyrano. We talk talking old stories and bringing them to new audiences without repeating the same story but bringing a fresh perspective to it and how vital that is for us all. We talk about the wonderful tool that is comedy that let's us reach our audience in an authentic and truly moving way. We chat the joy of theatre, words, life, queer love and so, so much more. Cyrano is on now at the Park Theatre London 11th December 2024 -11th January 2025 - Tickets: parktheatre.co.uk/event/cyrano/ CYRANO Virginia Gay's joyous, gender-flipped retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac, packed with music, wit and aching romance, is a love letter to hope; to language and desire; to the irrepressible magic of theatre. A big-hearted, irreverent rom-com, perfect for a feel good Christmas treat. Cyrano is the most interesting person in any room – a wordsmith, a charmer. She works twice as hard and runs twice as fast as the pretty boys, because she's deeply ashamed of something about herself. Enter Roxanne: brilliant and beautiful, with a penchant for poetry and a way with words, just like Cyrano. But Roxanne only has eyes for Yan: hot, manly Yan; all brawn-and-no-brains Yan; who is dumbstruck around Roxanne. Probably shy, right? Until suddenly he starts saying the most amazing things. But it's not Yan writing these perfect love scenes, it's Cyrano … Virginia Gay “Virginia Gay graduated WAAPA, then spent four years pretending to be a nurse on All Saints, six months pretending to be cop on Savage River (ABC), and then five years on Winners & Losers, where she pretended to know a lot about high finance. That last one, particularly, was a stretch. She won a Sydney Theatre Award for Best Actress for Calamity Jane, starred in the film Judy & Punch which premiered at Sundance, and wrote and directed her first short film Paper Cut, which made Tropfest finals. In 2020 she wrote two new plays: an adaptation of Cyrano for MTC and The Boomkak Panto for Belvoir, which premiered December 2021. Damon Gameau has been a wonderful presence in so many of our lives for a couple of decades now - from his prominent acting career, to his transformation into an award-winning film-maker. There's his timeless Tropfest winner Animal Beatbox, through to his legendary documentary features That Sugar Film and 2040. Now there's a new film about to launch, with the vision honed towards 2030. This vital decade. It's another master work – a short film with a big story. It's called Regenerating Australia. Along with the film, there'll be another huge outreach effort, a community projects funding program, and more. This time, Damon draws on visions expressed by communities around Australia, uniting on key themes across political and other divides. This is our take off point, and from there our conversation weaves through some of the many layers of the film, our country, and our respective personal paths. From what Regeneration means, and how to protect it, to the practicalities of how the film will roll out in the lead up to a pivotal and promising federal election. The community independents movement continues to gather momentum, along with so many other aspects of regeneration. Though I wondered, given Damon's focus on these stories of regeneration, how we might hold the darker aspects. And how his friendship with the late great Aboriginal performer David Gulpilil shaped his understanding of story, from the perspective of this Country's first story-tellers. You'll also hear a sneak preview of the beautiful soundtrack to the new film. This conversation was recorded online on 11 February 2022. Title slide image: Damon Gameau (supplied). This is such an important episode especially for those who feel exactly like this in not thinking that they have anything to say or advocate for. The importance of knowing Mental Health can and does effect everyone of us throughout our life being that either directly or like this episode discusses indirectly. All the President's Minutes is a podcast where conversations about movies, journalism, politics and history meet. Each show we use the seminal and increasingly prescient 1976 film All The President's Men as a portal, to engage with the themes and the warnings of the film resonating since its release. For minute 111, I join former Popcorn Taxi host, co-founder of Empire Magazine Australia, a former presenter on the Sci-Fi Channel and one of the sharpest minds in the Australian film community, Oscar Hillerstrom. Oscar and I talk about the power and influence of Goldman's script, Robert Redford delivering "Redford" moments before Oscar regales me with tales of Werner Herzog calling Jason Robards a "physical coward". ------------------------- *About Oscar Hillerstrom* ------------------------- "I've spoken in front of UNESCO, A.F.T.R.S. and A.C.M.I. I've interviewed Joss Whedon at the Opera House and John Cleese at the Orpheum. I've appeared on Channel 10, Showtime, The Sci-Fi Channel, TV1 and A.B.C. Radio. I co-founded Empire Australia, ran Popcorn Taxi and started up Revolver Magazine. My YouTube Channels have over 4m+ views. I've judged at MIFF, S.I.F.F., Fantastic Planet, Tropfest and the A.I.M.I.A. Awards, and was the inaugural winner of the F.A.C.T.S. Damon Gameau and Face2Face host David Peck talk about climate change, fact based dreaming, micro grids, seaweed, shared truth and inertia, and why we need to leave our happy bubbles.TrailerMake sure you check into the vision for the film and how we’re going to get there. Head to the Campaign here.Synopsis:2040 is a hybrid feature documentary that looks to the future, but is vitally important now. The 2040 journey began with award-winning director Damon Gameau (That Sugar Film). Motivated by concerns about the planet his 4-year-old daughter would inherit, Damon embarked on a global journey to meet innovators and change makers in the areas of economics, technology, civil society, agriculture, education and sustainability. Drawing on their expertise, he sought to identify the best solutions, available to us now, that would help improve the health of our planet and the societies that operate within it. From marine permaculture to decentralised renewable energy projects, he discovered that people all over the world are taking matters into their own hands. This journey is the central premise for the documentary ‘2040’, a story of hope that looks at the very real possibility that humanity could reverse global warming and improve the lives of every living thing in the process. It is a positive vision of what ‘could be’, instead of the dystopian future we are so often presented.About the Director:Gameau graduated from Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art with a degree in Performing Arts in 1999. In 2011, he won the short film competition, Tropfest with his animation Animal Beatbox. In 2014, he announced the production of the documentary That Sugar Film, in which he relates the dire mood swings and weight gain he experienced after taking on the low-fat, high-sugar diet for 60 days. Gameau wrote a companion book for the film, That Sugar Book, which reached the top of the Health & Well-being best-seller lists in Australia. That Sugar Film is the highest grossing Australian documentary released in cinemas across Australia and New Zealand. His most recent film, 2040, is a documentary is a letter to his 4-year-old daughter showing her what the world could look like in 2040 if we put into action the best solutions to many of our environmental challenges. It premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and has recently become one of the highest grossing Australian documentaries of all time in Australia. He also wrote an accompanying book, 2040: handbook for the regeneration'.He appeared in the 2009 feature film Balibo, in which he plays the part of Seven Network reporter Greg Shackleton. He starred as Scotsman Andy Maher in the Australian TV miniseries Underbelly. Gameau starred as Sonny in the Australian movie Thunderstruck, a tale of a group of friends and their devotion to AC/DC and in particular Bon Scott. And has also appeared in many other meaningful projectsGameau is in a relationship with actress, Zoe Tuckwell-Smith and together they have one child, daughter, Velvet Gameau.Image Copyright and Credit: Damon GameauF2F Music and Image Copyright: David Peck and Face2Face. Meet Carrington Lyons, the first female Camera Operator on the 9 News Central Victoria team. The most remarkable part, she's only 22. Carrington has always had a passion for photography and filmmaking but year 12 at St Brigid's College Horsham didn't pan out the way she anticipated. Her short film for Tropfest wasn't shortlisted and she didn't get her first round university offer. So Carrington chose to defer her place at Deakin University and take up a hairdressing apprentice. Six months in, Carrington knew hairdressing wasn't where her heart lay. With the support of her boss and family, she moved to Bendigo. It was a last minute shift change at a restaurant in Bendigo, that Carrington met tv journalist Sarah Lawrence who extended an invitation for Carrington to visit the 9 News Central Victoria studio. Carrington got her foot in the door and now... her days revolve around churning out high-quality, local news interviews, stories and packages. Carrington shares with us her story of persistence and hard work, and why she believes everything happen for a reason. Tweenage angst. A first sexual awakening. So many hopes and so many regrets. My first kiss was about to happen and - stupidly, stupidly, I tried to outsmart it. Because I felt so smug, being able to spy through some holes in my straw sunhat. Oh, how I regretted doing that. I would never have this opportunity again. I thought immediately after the moment was gone. I was 12. And of course, I did have that opportunity again. And while it hurt so deeply for so long that I'd sabotaged a potentially profound moment - it taught me two things - 1. know an opportunity when it arises and 2. realise that sometimes a missed opportunity is not that, it's just the timing isn't right. Trust that I'll know when the timing is better. Trust that instinct to help you know when you're ready. I learnt so much about accepting that sometimes it's better to wait. Katrina wrote the winning screenplay NO MAIL, for the Australian Series II of 'Project Greenlight' and was a Tropfest finalist director with THE REFEREES. She co-wrote a sitcom that was performed by the Queensland Theatre Company called FUNNY BUSINESS and she’s had an original interactive project GIRL MECHANIC TV selected to take part in X|Media|Lab’s development lab and a VR project called LITTLE MATCHES selected for the VR Plot Twist lab. She’s also written countless hours of corporate and branded content and childrens’ TV animation. Alongside working in production, Katrina has had a successful career as an actor - having been a regular writer/performer on the comedy series FLIPSIDE (ABC TV) and main cast writer/performer for THE WEDGE (Network10). Growing up, Genevieve Clay-Smith had a feeling of ‘otherness' that has fuelled a sense of destiny and driven her to align her creative talent with social justice. Leveraging her experience in acting and directing, Gen pursued the film industry as a force for good, making a decision that instead of striving for recognition as an actress herself, she would work to give people living with disability the opportunity to achieve their (socially invisible) dreams. Winning Australia's iconic short-film festival, Tropfest, with “Be My Brother”, Gen made headlines, challenging the status quo and smashing stigmas by giving people with disability an alternative to the tragic narrative lens they are too often see through. A true game-changer, Gen's work has been showcased at the United Nations as well as over 200 film festivals and events world-wide. Genevieve is the 2019 National Telstra Business Women's Award, Emerging Leader winner, the 2015 NSW Young Australian of the year and winner of the 2014 100 Women of Influence, Young Leader award. She also took out B&T's 2015 Women in Media award for creative, and won the 2015 Women's Weekly Women of the Future Awards. Needless to say, she is a mover and a shaker and as a part of the team at Taste has developed a new model of ‘creative inclusion'. We hope you enjoy this rare and delightful opportunity to have a coffee date with someone truly transforming lives, industries and audiences. This #coffeepod proves that working inclusively doesn't slow us down or compromise on quality. In fact, the transformation journey requires diverse inputs to change the narrative and therefore change the system. The operating model of so many creative journeys is founded on uncertainty. Uncertainty in terms of finance, acceptance, sustainability… we explore what it takes to suspend belief in transformation… and emerge successful. Come on the creative journey as we ask Gen how she overcame the loneliness of fighting for a more inclusive culture in the film industry. How long was she able to run her startup ‘Bus Stop Films on passion? And how did she successfully build alliances both in terms of social impact community and corporate supporters to bring her vision of inclusion to life? Nick talks about his struggles with fitting in and we discuss how we both manage intense thoughts and intense emotions particularly as a young person with a brain that feels different to other people, whilst trying to navigate the pressures and realities of school and being a teenager. We talk about what being a man means to him, and how we wear a mask to fit in. We also explore how rewarding yet challenging it is to sit with uncomfortable emotions.Nick is a film maker and high school student. He is the youngest Tropfest finalist in history (the world’s largest short film festival), at the age of just 16. His project was a thought provoking, emotional drama about teenage mental health called 'Boys Don't Cry'. The movie tackles the alarming epidemic of depression, anxiety and suicide among young Australians. Not only that, it also contributes to the rewriting of the toxic side of the masculine narrative that still permeates young boys today. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Hosted by Laugh Index Theatre, it's LIT Fest 2018 in Washington, D.C., where comedians from across the country get together to perform various comedy acts in our Nation's Capital! One Final Scare was lucky enough to be invited back for their second year, this time to open for Minki's sketch comedy team. Hear them try to be as funny as possible to make their audience feel like they got their money's worth since only half of them said they were into horror when Tracy polled them with a show of hands :) They discuss the Australian short horror film, Cargo, which went viral after it's premiere at the international film festival, Tropfest, propelling the story into a full feature film format (which you can find on Netflix). And given Father's Day just passed, it's quite a timely moment to cover this touching story of a dad who is determined to get his baby daughter to safety, no matter what...like Zombie mama drama!
Directors Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling talk about their experience directing their first feature film Cargo. Ramke and Howling discuss how their viral success with their Tropfest short film led to the opportunity to develop the idea into a feature, how they sought to elevate the story by including the perspective of Indigenous Australians, and how it became the first Australian Netflix Original feature film. Ten years. Perhaps you just found out recently that people are making movies with mobile phones. It may come as a shock that it’s been going on for over ten years. But we recently met someone who has been making films using cell phones and more recently with smartphones since 2008. Meet Jason van Genderen in Australia. A pioneer filmmaker in the mobile filmmaking industry. About two days after Jason launched his project: Filmbreaker, we recorded this podcast episode 21. Now, we are in San Diego which is history to Australia since they are a day into the future from us. But in about one day, after launching a Facebook page and the project, Jason had surpassed his goal. He planned to spend the rest of 2018 traveling and speaking at events geared toward mobile filmmakers to reach ten thousand followers to the project. But he passed that goal in one day. So when we were scheduled to record our podcast a couple days in, Jason was thrilled with enthusiasm…sort of elated with the results. In this podcast, we asked Jason to tell us about where he came from and what drove him to make films with phones when hardly anyone else was doing it beyond experimenting. Jason shared that the technicalities of video production with professional cameras he used for videos before cell phones were actually keeping him from focusing on the story part of his videos. Once he began to use his phone with all the simplicities, he was able to focus more on the storytelling aspect of making films and videos. He won an award at TropFest and he just, well, he didn’t say it but we know what happened. He got bitten by the mobile filmmaking bug and became passionate about making films with phones. You’ll want to listen to the podcast to understand a bit of the history of how we arrived here, ten years later. The conversation finds us comparing notes about the beginning of the mobile film industry from each of our perspectives. There is a story within this podcast which takes a little imagination to realize. But the best part is where we go from here. And that is where you, the listener, can take the story. Now it’s your turn to be a part of a great movement, a great community, and a great story. The story of mobile film began over ten years ago. Today is the beginning of the future of that story and it includes you and everyone with a phone camera. If you accept the dare to make films and share your stories using your smartphone camera. You will want to tune in to our exclusive bonus podcast on our Patreon page for our patrons. Jason shares all you need to know about settings on your phone and apps. You will learn how to go into your settings to make sure you get the most of your video recordings for your films and then Jason brings up settings on apps used for filmmaking.SBP Podcast is The Voice Of Mobile Film™ hosted by Susy Botello, founder of the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego, California.Watch Jason’s film, Mankind Is No Island. It started as an idea in a Darlinghurst cafe and became the world's largest short film festival. Tropfest has helped kickstart generations of Australian film careers throughout its 25 year history. While controversy and financial hardship has threatened the event, Tropfest has endured and the picnic continues.
Daina Reid is an award-winning Australian TV and Film Director. And she’s just lovely! In this interview, she shares how a Tropfest short film led her to leave acting and become a director. She talks about her recent work on SBS’s Sunshine TV drama and what she learnt working with the South-Sudanese community in Melbourne. Later in the interview, Daina explains some of her directorial and technical decisions for filming comedy shows. Less is more! It was also interesting to hear her thoughts on casting and what it’s like working with non-actors compared to established actors like Asher Keddie (Offspring; Paper Giants). I met Daina when I attended her Directing Masterclass a few weeks ago. Learning more about directing is really changing how I write my stories. In this episode, you may hear my fellow classmate Kylie in the background who came to film the interview with me. Find more about Daina Reid on her IMDB profile: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0717225/< Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (ABC TV) Fledgling detective Phryne Fisher is known for her sharp wit and pearl-handled pistol, which she uses to fight injustice in Melbourne during the 1920s. The glamorous sleuth makes her way through the city’s alleyways and jazz clubs while she fights crime as part of a larger mission — making sure that Murdoch Foyle, who she believes is responsible for the disappearance of her younger sister, stays behind bars. She fights for justice for people who can’t help themselves, including exploited workers and missing girls. Sunshine (SBS) Sunshine is based in Melbourne’s outer-western suburb of Sunshine and its surrounds. The story follows Jacob Garang, a young, aspiring South Sudanese-Australian basketballer who is on the cusp of being picked up by scouts for the US College league. He gets caught up in a police investigation involving a teenage girl from one of Melbourne’s affluent suburbs. The Wrong Girl (Network 10) The series follows Lily Woodward, a producer on a morning television show, and what happens when life, love and friendships collide. Longing for a life rich in romance, a dynamic career and a happy family, Lily is constantly thrown off course. As her journey continues, Lily discovers that sometimes the right choices can lead to the wrong places and the wrong choices can turn out to be the right ones. The Secret River (ABC TV) This two-part miniseries is based on the novel of the same name written by Kate Grenville. It follows the story of young couple, William and Sal Thornhill, who are transported to the new colony of New South Wales in 1805, giving a look into the colonisation of Australia and the escalating conflict between the original Indigenous inhabitants and the newly arrived white convicts and settlers. Romper Stomper (Stan) Romper Stomper is an Australian television series sequel to the 1992 film Romper Stomper movie and and set 25 years after the events in the film. How do you take something complex and convey the information in a fun way? Just ask filmmaker Damon Gameau. It's what he did with That Sugar Film. And what he's going to do with his latest documentary, 2040. It's all about what the world could look like if we addressed climate change using knowledge we already have. We are SO excited for this film. It's still a work in progress and right now Damon is engaged in a global quest to find the best models on offer. We were so lucky to have him share some of his findings with us early. Editor's note: The Five Star Movement is a provocative new way to approach politics. Dumbo Feather does not necessarily endorse its views, but believes it offers food for thought in redesigning a broken system. All movements have leaders with agendas and those agendas must be examined from within a holistic perspective of what is the best way forward for our societies. This week we're talking about the arts! Yes it's our acting episode, Guy talks about his trip to New Plymouth to Tropfest and watching the film he starred in 'Fishman 3: The Casting Tape' for the first time in front of a crowd of 2000 people. Harley talks about his new role in a feature film and how he accidentally ignored some crucial aspects of his character until after he'd already filmed some of his scenes. We also talk about our most recent acting work performing in a new Sketch comedy series for Maori TV. We discuss when acting goes bad and did Guy steal a part that was meant to be Harley's? Harley also has an update about his Butt for the Butt chronicles and we pay tribute to another fallen brother Bill Paxton on 'Who's Dead This Week'.

This week Sam has his car hit by someone, he went on a photowalk and Chris went down to Tropfest so we get a rundown on that.
On this episode Harley becomes an unintentional gay meme when a leaked photo from a recent acting shoot pops up on Facebook. We give a shout out to some members of the Hardy Hundy who have been supporting the cause and Harley has beaten out Guy for a new acting role that pays a lot more than Uber. Speaking of Uber Guy's talking about more of his pet peeve's dealing with the public and Harley's attitude towards Uber drivers sends Guy into a complete rage, it's almost the Poetry incident all over again. Guy is also upset that an ex-grirlfriend thrice removed has de-friended him on FB. We talk about Networking vs Real-working and Guy's upcoming trip to Tropfest where the film he starred in 'Fishman 3: The Casting Tape' is one of the finalists. Tune in to the winning-est podcast ever!

Lets Talk About. Lessons From The Grave. Tropfest. Growing up with parents in the public spotlight can be a double edged sword. Matilda Brown, daughter of Australia's prolific show business duo, Bryan Brown & Rachel Ward, has storytelling coursing through her veins. But forging her own identity has certainly been an inside job.

The day before Tropfest 2016, I sat down with founder John Polson to chat about the recent events, the origin & the future of Tropfest, along with some of the standard silly stuff. I was also lucky enough to chat with fellow finalists Hugh Clark, Angela McCormack & the team of Tristan Klein/Nick Baker, on their respective films & processes. SO MUCH SILLY FUN! PS. You can watch my film, Waste of Time, RIGHT HERE -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76oyCFZDFbg

With 10 days until the Tropfest submission, Ben Nicholas, the man behind the highly successful web series, Footballer Wants a Wife, and a former series regular on Neighbours, called me up and asked if I'd like to make a short film with him. This is our story. But mostly his story. We ramble.

It's our one year anniversary on the podcast and in celebration we're uploading it a day late with zero preparation! Huzzah! On this monumental ep we talk about our trip to Napier to attend a good friends wedding and how Harley is the worst car person to road trip with. We also discuss the first cut of Older and how long it's wound up being. We talk about Tropfest and a recent short film finalist being disqualified for screening online before the festival. We also look at a potential reboot of The Labyrinth and how it's completely unacceptable. Guy discusses shooting a new music video and what went wrong the first time he shot it. Then there's Oscar's controversy, as the Academy have been accused of being sexist and racist, what's the solution?! Get comfy, tune in and check it out.

Director, writer and choreographer Alethea Jones (2012 Tropfest winning LEMONADE STAND, THE GENTLEMEN’S GUIDE TO KNIFE FIGHTING) had a two year campaign of to-ing and fro-ing between Oz and LA before moving here. But, boy, did it pay off! In the last year she has directed a couple of episodes of GORTIMER GIBBON’S LIFE ON NORMAL STREET and the pilot episode of A HISTORY OF RADNESS - both for Amazon Studios. We discuss the power of saying ‘I don’t know’, the difference between pitch meetings and general meetings, the necessity of making messy short films and the importance of making your boss look good to their boss.
Actor Damon Gameau (BALIBO, THE TRACKER, SECRETS & LIES) has added documentary filmmaker to his bow with the release of THAT SUGAR FILM. Beginning with nutritional naiveté and dogged determination Damon used himself as a guinea pig in a Super-Size Me style to explore the effect of hidden sugar on the body. The results are startling in this fun, informative doco. In this podcast, he talks about letting go of ego, putting the audience first and using humour in order to deliver the message beyond 'The Quinoa Curtain’ - his awesome phrase, not mine! We also discuss dealing with haters on social media and how the backlash after his 2010 Tropfest win was the best thing that could have happened to him. Wanna know the key to happiness? Have a listen!
