Vi dykker ned i VHS-nostalgi, genoplever film fra barndommen og graver den ene titel frem, som vi aldrig måtte se. Der bliver også plads til en ondskabsfuld guilty pleasure-diskussion, og vi kaster os ud i en dybt seriøs efterlysning af en ukendt, mareridtsinducerende 80'er-film, der stadig hjemsøger os. Wenn das aktuelle Kino mal wieder Bezug auf das klassische Hollywood nimmt, sind wir natürlich dabei. Zum Kinostart von Guillermo del Toros Nightmare Alley unterhalten wir uns über die erste Verfilmung des Romans von William Lindsay Gresham aus dem Jahr 1947 - ein Klassiker des Film Noir, der sich in vielen Punkten von anderen Filmen der ursprünglichen Schwarzen Serie unterscheidet. Das liegt zum einen daran, dass es kein kleiner, dreckiger B-Film ist, sondern eine teure A-Produktion, mit großem Star in der Hauptrolle (Tyrone Power) und erheblich längerer Laufzeit. Außergewöhnlich ist aber auch das Zirkus-Setting - zumindest die erste Hälfte des Films spielt nicht im sonst so üblichen Großstadtdschungel. Wir reden darüber, was dieser Status als Großproduktion für dramaturgische und inhaltliche Folgen hat. Und spekulieren darüber, warum Guillermo del Toro wohl der Meinung war, dass der Stoff heute noch anschlussfähig ist.

Another all-star crew rocks this chat about famous (and sometimes infamous) script fixer, co-director and unapologetically campy B-film producer Larry Cohen. How many classic shows did he work on that many may have seen? Does he get too silly for his own good or often become a factor of working with too many other filmmakers that got a different vision than him? And what film will he primarily be remembered for? And more "Stuff" to complain about!

„Wir sprechen nur mit maßgeblichen Bonzen!“ erklärt Mörder Heinz Klett und getreu diesem Motto redet Kinomensch Lucas Barwenczik folgerichtig im CrossCast mit Thomas von SchönerDenken – über Rolf Olsens Action-Exploitation BLUTIGER FREITAG von 1972 in der mittlerweile auf Bluray verfügbaren 4K-Fassung. Während Thomas noch Probleme hat den richtigen Einflugswinkel zu finden, ist Lucas schon vom unverwundbaren Überbösewicht Klett fasziniert, der fast Schwarzenegger und Stallone vorweg nimmt. Der Film ist Exploitation und zeigt Exploitation – nämlich in den Arbeitsverhältnissen, wenn die Ausbeutung der Arbeit am Beispiel Heidis und Luigis gezeigt werden, bis einem die Halsschlagadern schwellen. Ein klarer Blick in die klassistische Kälte der BRD der frühen Siebziger: Know your place – Bleib, wo Du hingehörst – Heidi wird zusammengestaucht, „damit sie wieder in die Tüte passt“. Dazu passen immer wieder Anspielungen auf die RAF, Revolutionsattitude hat sich auf jeden Fall auch Heinz Klett zugelegt: Polizisten sind keine Heilsarmisten und wenn einer draufgeht, dann war das Berufsrisiko. Da klingt Heinz Klett gewiß nicht zufällig wie Andreas Baader. Der Tod eines Polizisten (die Handgranate!) führt dann auch zur beeindruckendsten und billig inszenierten Gore-Szene. Vorbild für den Bankraub, den Heinz Klett mit seinem Kumpanen durchführt, war ein echter Bankraub in München 1971, bei dem alle Täter zu Tode kamen. Beeindruckend wird die trostlose Stimmung der BRD zwischen Studentenbewegung und Deutschem Herbst gezeigt – Heinz Klett wird vor diesem Hintergrund von Lucas als Symbol des Ausbruchs und als gesellschaftliche Gegenfigur interpretiert – mit allen kriminellen und brutalen Aspekten. Die Menschen sind fast ausnahmslos Täter oder Opfer des deutschen Faschismus und seiner Verbrechen – 1971 liegt bei einigen der Geldbeutel schon fast in den 1980ern aber die Werte und Normen hängen noch im Dritten Reich fest. Thomas kämpft beim Hauptdarsteller Raimund Harmstorf noch mit Kindheitserinnerungen: Harmstorf hatte als Seewolf kartoffelzerquetschend Alpträume verursacht – auch mit einer dunklen, bedrohlichen Stimme, die gar nicht Raimund Harmstorfs eigene Stimme war. Harmstorf beging viele Jahre später Selbstmord – viele geben der BILD-Zeitung daran die Schuld. Auch andere Schauspieler sind früh gestorben, besonders tragisch bei Heidi-Darstellerin Christine Böhm, die wenige Jahre nach dem Film bei einem Unfall starb. Lucas und Thomas diskutieren, mit welchen Erwartungen die Zuschauer:innen einem B-Film gerecht werden – der Vergleich mit BULLITT oder FRENCH CONNECTION ist auf jeden Fall nicht fair, spätestens wenn das Rennen zwischen einem VW-Käfer und einem Ford Taunus unfreiwillig komisch wie ein Rollatorenrennen wirkt. Am Ende steht die ebenso irritierende wie brutale Vergewaltigungsszene im Mittelpunkt. Sie wird mit expliziten Genitaldarstellungen und surreal wirkenden Fleischereibildern gegengeschnitten. Besonders vor dem Hintergrund dieser schwer zu ertragenden Szene fragt sich Thomas: Wie kann Heinz Klett heute trotzdem als Kultfigur gefeiert werden? Obwohl er von Regisseur Olsen als das gezeigt wird, was er ist: Inbegriff der toxischen Maskulinität. Aber das ist ein Problem der Rezeption, nicht des Films, sind sich Lucas und Thomas am Ende dieser Episode einig.

Doch mit dem Ende der Videotheken-Ära, verschwand auch das Exploitation-Kino immer weiter in der Versenkung und ein unterschätzter Regisseur wie Cirio H. Santiago geriet in Vergessenheit. Bis heute! "The rest was destiny," recounts Wynorski, who soon found himself hired by the renowned movie mogul to cut "coming attractions" for all of the company's new action and horror films. "It was like grasshopper learning from the kung-fu master," says Wynorski, who claims his six-months internship with Corman taught him more than four years at film school."It wasn't long after that Corman offered me the first of many writing/directing assignments. Some distributor wanted a flick about a killer in a shopping mall," recalls Wynorski, "and Roger trusted me enough to say 'come up with something good, and you can direct it." Well, a couple days later, the director walked in with the first treatment to a film called Chopping Mall (1986), and the rest was history. From then on, Jim Wynorski turned out an average of three to five films a year as a director, and even more as a producer/writer. Throughout the 1980s came a steady stream of wild exploitation titles like Big Bad Mama II (1987) with Angie Dickinson, Not of This Earth (1988) with Traci Lords and The Return of Swamp Thing (1989) with Heather Locklear. On into the 1990s, Wynorski continued to climb to the top of the B-Film mountain with flicks like Hard Bounty (1995) starring Kelly LeBrock, Point of Seduction: Body Chemistry III (1994) & Body Chemistry 4: Full Exposure (1995) with Shannon Tweed and Morgan Fairchild and Munchie (1992), which featured the first film appearance of the then-unknown 12-year-old child actress Jennifer Love Hewitt.As the years peeled by and tastes changed, Jim Wynorski kept hip by innovating new special effects techniques that landed the director no less than seven world premieres on the Sci-Fi Channel. His credits there include films like Gargoyle (2004), The Curse of the Komodo (2004), Project Viper and Cry of the Winged Serpent (2007).As for the future, the 59-year-old Wynorski feels the audience for alternative cinema made away from the studio system will continue to grow thanks to new advances in Internet and Cable technologies. In fact, he is in post-production on another thriller, Vampire in Vegas (2009). "And you can bet I'll be there," he offers with a big smile, "with some really fun stuff." Just because they were made with lower budgets than larger feature films, doesn't mean they aren't awesome. With so many movies to choose from in this category full of ridiculous premises and silly dialogue, it's kind of hard to pick favorites.
