Katie Kitamura's fifth novel is “Audition,” and it focusses on a middle-aged actress and her ambiguous relationship with a much younger man. Kitamura tells the critic Jennifer Wilson that she thought for a long time about an actress as protagonist, as a way to highlight the roles women play, and to provoke questions about agency. “I teach creative writing, and in class often ... if there is a character who the group feels doesn't have agency, that is often brought up as a criticism of the character,” she tells Wilson. Other students will say, “ ‘She doesn't have any agency,' as if a character without agency is implausible or in some way not compelling in narrative terms. But of course, the reality is very few of us have total agency. I think we operate under the illusion or the impression that we have a great deal of agency. But in reality when you look at your life, our choices are quite constricted.” “Audition” comes out this week.

Ed Hardy is the most impactful tattooer of our time. Now that he no longer working, does his influence end?[Watch this episode on YOUTUBE]Ed's legendary San Francisco shop, Tattoo City, closed its doors for good yesterday. His publishing company, Hardy Marks no longer has him at the helm. Does his influence end now that these two huge vehicles for how he performed and shared his work are in his past? While the shop is now gone, sadly, Ed handed the book publishing torch to a very capable team, Taki and Molly Kitamura. With the experience of making amazing books of their own, documenting and sharing pieces of tattoo culture and history (in a way reminiscent of Ed himself), I can't imagine Hardy Marks landing in the care of anyone better. One of their first projects is reintroducing the Tattoo Time series, with new issues to come soon. Taki wanted to introduce their new editor, Ethan Dodge, a great writer among many other things. On this episode of the PAW Book Club podcast, we talk with Katie Kitamura '99, author of our latest read, “Intimacies.” The much-lauded novel follows a woman who comes to The Hague as an interpreter for the international court and begins to interpret for a former president who's facing war crime charges. Kitamura answered our questions about the book, discussing why she gives so little backstory to her characters and why readers' strong dislike of one character surprised her. She also discussed her writing philosophy and what advice she gives as a creative writing professor at NYU. “The writing itself, when it is private, when it's just myself, when I can do whatever I want, that is the most special part of writing to me,” she said. “That's my favorite part.”

The modern history of Ritchie Engineering Solutions began with J.A Ritchie in 1986, an engineer with a successful career in the design and manufacture of gas turbine jet engines. This engineering passion led the business to involvement in a host of pioneering projects from world record-breaking aviation attempts to the design and production of Victorian steam machinery. As the business has evolved, so has its plant list – but one thing that has remained a constant over the last 15 years of evolution is its relationship with cutting tool manufacturer Ceratizit. Now run by J.A Ritchie's two sons, Alasdair and Duncan, the family has subsequently continued to run and develop the business with the same passion for engineering. Nowadays, the Manningtree-based company operates in a host of sectors that range from autosport and automotive to aerospace and other markets that demand high-end manufacturing capability. To manufacture high-quality components competitively, the company has invested in 3, 4 and 5-axis machining with technology from Bridgeport, Kitamura, HAAS, Mazak and Matsuura that is supported by CAM software from OPEN MIND and Renishaw probing for everything from job setting, in-process and post-process inspection. Taking a look at the company, Duncan Ritchie from Ritchie Engineering Solutions says: “The business started with our father who initially designed and made steam engines in a shed that he built at the bottom of the garden. From there, he got involved in Richard Branson's transatlantic hot air balloon crossing in the late 1980s, working on the thermodynamics of the burner design and the pressurisation of the capsule. We then started to commercially offer the hot air balloon manifold that burns propane - and to this day if you see the burner unit above the pilot's head, that is where it all started for us.” More recently, the Essex company has been involved in machining parts for automotive OEMs, motorsport rally clients, Norton motorcycles, aerospace OEMs, lighting companies and many more. Discussing how the company evolved to its current position, Duncan says: “Down the years there has been a lot of hard work and sleepless nights, but in practical terms, you progress and build on your quality and make quality your selling point. A key part of this is your relationship not only with your customers but also with your suppliers. That would be everything from your material supplier, tooling and suppliers of the machine tools, but significantly it's going to be the cutting tool suppliers. We have been very lucky and fortuitous to have a fantastic supplier in Ceratizit and a support network via Adam Cross from Ceratizit.” Looking at the 15-year relationship with Ceratizit, Duncan adds: “Back then we were in little more than a shed in a country lane that would put many suppliers off, but Adam turned up and he saw us for who we were. He absolutely assisted in supporting us with the right tools for the right job and he has continued to do so throughout our journey.” The subcontract manufacturing company has a complete armoury of Ceratizit products and the Ceratizit vending solution, alluding to this, Duncan continues: “The vending solution is twofold effective. It's fantastic that we can have the bread-and-butter tooling such as the inserts and regular end mills. This means we can program complex components with the knowledge that we have spare cutting tool products immediately available. We have a small workshop where space is at a premium and we don't have the financial capacity to necessarily stock everything, so having the vending machine stocked up and ready to go is fantastic.” Looking to the future and the ongoing relationship with Ceratizit that is so critical to the company's success, Duncan concludes: “The relationship with Ceratizit will definitely continue for the next 15 years and beyond. It is nice to show the journey of where we have been and how we started, but it's more important to look at the focus of where we are going. We are working towards various accreditations to have a trusted tool supplier like Ceratizit is an essential part of that jigsaw. They can help us to make our growth journey happen. It is a team effort that involves our personnel and our suppliers - and Ceratizit is a major one of those elements on our team.”

Abstract: cAMP is a pivotal second messenger regulated by various upstream pathways including Ca2+ and G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). To decipher in vivo cAMP dynamics, we rationally designed cAMPinG1, an ultrasensitive genetically encoded green cAMP indicator that outperformed its predecessors in both dynamic range and cAMP affinity. Two-photon cAMPinG1 imaging detected cAMP transients in the somata and dendritic spines of neurons in the mouse visual cortex on the order of tens of seconds. In addition, multicolor imaging with a highly sensitive new red Ca2+ indicator RCaMP3 allowed simultaneous measurement of population patterns in Ca2+ and cAMP in hundreds of neurons. We identified Ca2+-induced cAMP responses that represented specific information, such as direction selectivity in vision and locomotion, as well as GPCR-induced cAMP responses. Overall, our multicolor suite revealed that information encoded in Ca2+ and GPCRs signaling is integrated and stored as cAMP transients for longer periods in vivo. Abstract: Dynamic functional organization by synchronization is theorized to be essential for dimension reduction of the cerebellar learning space. We analyzed a large amount of coordinate-localized, two-photon imaging data from cerebellar Crus II in mice undergoing Go/No-go reinforcement learning. Tensor component analysis revealed that a majority of climbing fiber inputs to Purkinje cells were reduced to only four functional components, corresponding to accurate timing control of motor initiation related to a Go cue, cognitive error-based learning, reward processing, and inhibition of erroneous behaviors after a No-go cue. Spatial distribution of these components coincided well with the boundaries of Aldolase-C/zebrin II expression in Purkinje cells, whereas several components are mixed in single neurons. Synchronization within individual components was bidirectionally regulated according to specific task contexts and learning stages. These findings suggest that the cerebellum, based on anatomical compartments, reduces dimensions by self-organization of components, a feature that may inspire new-generation AI designs. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.11.15.516633v1?rss=1 Authors: Osanai, H., Yamamoto, J., Kitamura, T. Abstract: Electromyography (EMG) signals have been used to identify animal's behavioral states including sleep/wake states and freezing behavior. However, EMG recording is often not conducted together with in vivo electrophysiology recording because it requires additional surgeries and setups. While independent component analysis (ICA) has been used as a well-established method to reduce noise from field potential data, there has been no attempt to proactively use the removed "noise", of which EMG signals are considered to be one of the major sources. Here, we demonstrate that EMG signals can be reconstructed from local field potential data using ICA without direct EMG recording. The extracted component is highly correlated with directly measured EMG signals. This component is further demonstrated to be useful for measuring an animal's sleep/wake states and freezing behaviors consistently with actual EMG. The EMG component can be also separated by four-channel LFP data from multisite brain regions. Our method will reduce the necessary effort to measure EMGs in wide-ranged in vivo electrophysiology experiments including the investigation of neural correlates of animal behavior. Light Yagami, possessor of the titular Death Note, manages to kill off the few FBI agents tasked to spy on him. By simply holding the agent Rey Penber hostage he exploits the rules of the Death Note which include the facts that you can influence the victim's behaviour in their last moments by what is written, you can also have someone use sheets from the Death Note without knowledge of its power and you can pre-emptively write the cause and details of a death before putting any name to it. Meanwhile the detective L, teams up with the last remaining members of a Japanese task force formed to capture Kira, this includes Light's father Soichiro Yagami. L bravely exposes his face as a show of trust but chastises the force for giving him their real names. As L has already established. A name and a face are all Kira needs to kill. L interrogates each of the members before deducing they are not Kira and so L vows to the team that they will show Kira that “the good guys always win”. Unbeknownst to Light, Rey's Widow Naomi Misora has a lead on Kira and goes to contact L and the task force. But since the task force are too busy meeting L it results in no one being in the office. Welcome to episode 49 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I'll be wrapping up my discussion about Eiji Kitamura and his Christmas music, with his fantastic 2001 album, “Santa Clarinet.” While Akira Ishikawa's “Drum Christmas Drum” kicked off my interest in Japanese Christmas music, the Jazz, Group Sounds and Mood Kayo albums of the 1960s really cemented my obsession, while the City Pop Christmas music from the 1980s broadened my collecting horizons and led to me finding an even wider variety of music. One of the things I love about Eiji Kitamura is that he serves as a bridge from the earliest days of Japanese Pop music to today. He got his start around the same time Hibari Misora's “Hitoribocchi no Christmas” gave birth to Japanese Christmas Pop, so he has been an eyewitness to the genre as it's evolved. That's part of why I'd love to see him do an album where he covers all the big Japanese Christmas songs, from Kai Band's “Anna,” to Yumi Matsutoya's “Koibito ga Santa Claus,” Keisuke Kuwata's “Merry X'mas In Summer” and “White Lovers,” and, of course, Tatsuro Yamashita's “Christmas Eve.” I have a couple Jazz albums with covers of a lot of those songs, but having one from Eiji Kitamura would be something special, considering his long history in the industry. I hope you've enjoyed learning about Eiji Kitamura. Join me back here next month for my special 50th episode, where I'll be talking about the 1977 compilation, “Merry Christmas (Bouquet of Hearts Present Series),” from King Records. It's a great album in its own right with an interesting history, but it's also an instrumental album for me personally, not just in the way it helped me improve my research and collecting strategy, but in the long-standing connection it's given me with a like-minded collector in Japan. It's a double LP and will take a lot of work to prepare, so at this point I'm not sure what else I'll cover next month, but I'm sure I'll figure something out. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!
Welcome to episode 48 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this first of two episodes about legendary clarinetist Eiji Kitamura, I'll be discussing his 1965 EP, “Dancing Christmas,” and his 1988 album, “Golden Christmas Songs.” As I mentioned in this episode, Eiji Kitamura's music is some of the earliest Japanese Christmas music I came across. While my attempts to get all three of his albums were frustrating at times, I was thrilled to finally own them all. It was just as enjoyable learning about him and finding that, at 93 years old, he's still performing and recording. One of the most delightful surprises I've had while collecting was finding that he played on Tatsuo Otsuka's “Christmas Serenade.” I first saw the cover for the album in early 2020, and it took well over a year to finally get a copy. As with Eiji Kitamura's albums, it was worth the wait. I have to apologize for how late I am releasing this episode. The past month has been a string of hassles and crises. While I didn't have as much time to work on my podcast as I'd have liked, I was able to make some headway on the huge backlog of music I've been needing to digitize and prepare for future episodes. Until a few days ago, I was nearly done, but a new bundle of records put me a little further behind. I can't complain, though, as several of the records I've gotten recently are real holy grails. I've managed to remove several of the biggest items from my wishlist of albums, and I can't wait to cover them at some point. I hope you've enjoyed this introduction to Eiji Kitamura. Join me back here later this month as I finish discussing his career and his Christmas music.
