The Edge of Tomorrow, The Fall Guy).

Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 5 of the Director Watch Podcast, they are joined by AwardsWatch contributor Zach Laws to discuss the latest film in their Todd Haynes series, Wonderstruck (2017). Two years after Carol was released with worldwide acclaim, Haynes took a rather unpredictable turn in his filmography by crafting a multi-generational family drama aimed for young audiences. Working off a script from writer Brian Selznick (based on his novel of the same name), Haynes takes two time periods, the 1920s and 1970s, and melds two stories of two young deaf children who are searching for their parents in New York City. Working alongside actresses he's worked with before in Julianne Moore and Michelle Williams, and discovering the breakout talents of Millicent Simmonds and Oakes Fegley, Haynes is able to takes us on an emotional ride through fifty years of family, as well as human history, to tell an earnest story about togetherness and sincerity. Ryan, Jay, and Zach dive into the right turn for Haynes, the look of each time period shot by Haynes's regular cinematographer Edward Lachman, the child performances, and if a less cynical approach for a Todd Haynes films makes this stand out in a good or bad way for his filmography. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h13m. The guys will be back next week to conclude their Todd Haynes series with a look at 2019's Dark Waters. Till then, let's get into it. Before the rise of the Delta Variant, we had the chance to see a few movies in theaters, A Quiet Place part 2, F9, Black Widow, The Suicide Squad, and Candyman to name a few. We hope to have episodes on all of those out soon. A Quiet Place Part 2, directed by John Krasinski, as well as starring him briefly along with Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, and Millicent Simmonds A Quiet Place II, John Krasinski, World Premiere was 3/8/2020, covid delayed release theatrically to 5/28/2021 This is a continuation of the first film with a few more hints at more of the overall backstory about what led to the post-apocalyptic world the movie takes place in. A worthwhile sequel, but some aspects I feel could have used a little more attention. The opening sequence depicting the arrival was done very well. I have always been a fan of the slow transition from normal to invasion, for lack of a better term. You know a secret that the characters don't but there's nothing you can do but watch and wait. War of the Worlds, both the original and Spielberg's remake, and M. Night's “Signs” are perfect examples of this as well. It sets up great tension in otherwise mundane and routine tasks, as seen in this film, going to the store and watching a little league baseball game. The fireball in the sky was ominous, but not over the top and I liked how people didn't “freak out” but more hastily moved on with a hint of urgency instead of all out chaos. This did a good job of filling in some missing details the audience wanted after watching the first film. It also very naturally and subtly added a moment that would payoff later between Millicent Simmonds and Cillian Murphy later in the film using the ASL gesture for “Dive.” The reintroduction of Cillian Murphy's character and the violent group at the marina did a great job of building out the world we got a glimpse of in the first film. Most of the encounters are with people who have lost hope and are just trying to survive, by any means necessary, even if it is at the expense of someone else. The sequences with the creatures were more frightening and visceral that we've seen and had a lot of good jump scares to go along with that. At the beginning, it seemed at times that John Krasinki's character was more aware of the creatures' sensitivity to sound that he should have been during the first wave of the attack. The son character seemed out of place as if the filmmakers were not sure what to do with his character. Also, what was up with the jump scare revealing that Cillian Murphy's character kept his wife's body at the compound? It was a beat that was not explained, nor did it go anywhere. The film's abrupt end is in line with the first film, but one half of the Brothers Brotastic felt there should be a little more breathing room. Clearly seeing the first film is a prerequisite, but it may have helped to recap some things at the beginning. I did not have a chance to rewatch the first film, so any themes or carryovers from Part 1 may not be immediately obvious, and connections may be missed. Overall, this was a worthwhile sequel. It was nuanced while maintaining the same look and feel as the original film. It did not stray too far from what people loved about its predecessor and breathed in some new life that looks to take this film into a much anticipated Part 3. I overall felt my experience seeing this film physically was a little lackluster, and I'm not sure if that is because of the movie, or if it was being back in the theater for the first time in months and maybe being kind of scared, but I'm glad I saw this in theaters, and would be willing to watch this again. 2 tickets.

The Force Fed Sci-Fi Movie Podcast

This time, we review the family survival drama film A Quiet Place and ask how did John Krasinski go from office prankster to survivalist farmer, is this a film with social commentary, and why have a baby during the apocalypse? Let's dive in… A Quiet Place (2018) Cast and Crew Written, directed and starring John Krasinski as Lee Abbott: Krasinski rose to prominence following his starring role as loveable goofball Jim Halpert on the US version of The Office where he gained a reputation as a comedic actor. Then he slowly began to turn around that perception by appearing in 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi and the Amazon Prime series Jack Ryan.  A Quiet Place also helped him separate him from his Jim Halper role even further. His appearance in A Quiet Place not only cemented a new perception of Krasinski as an actor, but also as a director as this was only the third time he sat in the director's chair and his first time as a director for a major studio. He also shares screenwriting credits with fellow writers Bryan Woods and Scott Beck. Emily Blunt as Evelyn Abbott: In real life, Blunt and Krasinski are married, but had not starred together in a film before A Quiet Place. When Krasinski signed on to direct, Blunt was initially hesitant to appear in the film until she read his script and asked him to be cast in the role of Evelyn. For a more in-depth review of Blunt's early career, check out our past episode on Live. Die. Repeat: The Edge of Tomorrow. Millicent Simmonds as Regan Abbott: Simmonds is deaf in real life and even coached her fellow actors in the use of American Sign Language (ASL). Her casting was intentional as Krasinski wanted a young deaf actress to play his daughter in the film. She also suggested two of the more poignant moments in the film when Regan stops her father from putting in a new hearing implant and at the end of the film when Lee signs to his daughter “I have always loved you.” Noah Jupe as Marcus Abbott: In spite of his young age, Jupe has already appeared in several big-time productions like The Night Manager, Suburbicon and more recently Ford v Ferrari and along with his young co-star, they are able to contribute to the film in ways that many actors their age wouldn't be able to do. Politicizing Parenthoood After watching the film and reading interviews of John Krasinski, it is easy to interpret the film's theme as that of parenthood. Not only parenthood, but also how to prepare one's children for the future in addition to how to deal with guilt following a family tragedy. However, since we live in a society that refuses to accept a simple explanation, critics have been analyzing this film for any sort of deeper political or social commentary. Krasinski did mention that he watched horror films with a social commentary like Jaws and Get Out for inspiration, but did not intentionally make this film with an eye on direct commentary. New Yorker writer Richard Brody called the film “the antithesis of Get Out” with a conservative and pro-gun message. It's difficult to determine how Brody came to this conclusion, but he seems to fixate on the inclusion of guns in the film. Krasinski has directly rebuked this critique in subsequent interviews saying that while he can understand how someone could come to that conclusion, really his sole intention with the film was to make the theme about parenthood. In contrast to Brody's review, Roman Catholic Bishop Robert Barron noted heavy religious themes with a pro-life message in the film citing the family's agrarian life and Evelyn's decision to have her baby in spite of the apocalyptic circumstances. Krasinski isn't going to respond to every critique and any self-respecting director will defend their work in spite of the criticism.  Even though the film has only been out for a couple of years at the time of this writing, there have been wildly different themes and interpretations other than what is onscreen.
