It's the temptation to have it all together. To project a version of myself that looks like I have it all together. Maybe you're familiar with this seductress. It's not really complicated. You want your friends to think you have it all together so that they think more highly of you. You want your clients, customers, or co-workers to think you have it all together so that they are confident in your work. But you don't have it all together.I don't have it all together.Nobody does. 'One day things will be different. Once _______ happens.' Have you ever said this to yourself? Are you subconsciously thinking that thought in any area of your life right now? I remember my first car well. It was a light metallic blue 1989 Ford Taurus. It was 5 years old at the time but it was in excellent condition. And yes, my parents bought it for me when I was a junior in College. I had wanted my own car since I first rode in my dad’s 1969 split top, fastback, Corvette Stingray when I was 6. Now owning my own car, I thought my life was complete. I was a year away from graduating college and joining the real world and I had a car to take me wherever I wanted to go. Then this funny thing happened. When I drove back to Boston from Northwestern Pennsylvania I began to see every other car on the road that was better than mine. This feeling that I wasn’t enough began to creep in and I knew how to handle that. I immediately began to think about the next car I would own. How it would be newer and sportier than the car I had just received. Life’s funny that way isn’t it?We are never really satisfied, even following an epic ‘win’ in life. Stop putting your hope in ‘one day’, because ‘that’ day will never arrive for you. In fact, you’re never going to ‘arrive’. Stop saying to your self, “when I make X amount of money, then I will be content.” Or “when she loves me I will be complete.” Or “when I finally finish my thesis I will focus on other things.” Or “when my book is purchased by a publisher, I will have made it.” Deep down you know this isn’t true. Deep down you know that no accomplishment will complete you. We are never complete. We are never finished. In this Episode of the Own Your Life Podcast, we will discover how 'One Day' thinking is ruining our lives and 3 things we can do about it to rid ourselves of that 'trap' for good.Own Your Life Podcast is produced by Gregg Nordin. subscribe in itunes If you would like to have a short, 30 minute conversation where we explore this step and move forward, I am here for you! Episode 27 - What to do When Your Critical Voice Paralyzes You

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 8, 2016 9:44

Have you ever tried to get centered? Maybe it was through prayer, meditation or yoga. Or maybe you were on a run. Or sitting in a coffee shop and you wanted to quiet things within so that you could align with your true desires or with your God. But you just couldn’t get rid of ‘that’ voice in your head that continues to criticize everything and anything. That’s the critical voice. It’s the voice within ourselves that tells us that we’re not good enough. It tells us that we’re not doing a good enough job. That we could be doing better, no matter how well we are actually doing. Sometimes the critical voice charges directly, shouting and screaming across the battlefield while pointing at us and calling us out. But other times it comes at us sideways while we feel safe in the comfort of our bed, surrounded by our pillows and duvet. In those moments it whispers, ever so softly, ‘you’re going to forget something important tomorrow. You aren’t prepared for that presentation. You’re going to be seen for who you are and she will know that you are a fraud. You shouldn’t have had that brownie. You always do that. You’re not worth being loved.’When we boil it down, the critical voice is usually telling us that we aren’t enough in some form or fashion. It gets strongest when we’ve made a choice to better an area of our life. When we finally decide we want to eat better or exercise more. It turns up the volume when we begin creating at a new level. When we start that new blog post or first put pen to paper for that book we’ve been talking about for the longest time. It’s most powerful immediately following a genuine revelation about ourselves. Its desire is to get us off track just as the engine has started to move the train. If you’ve ever launched a new business, taken a class, tried to break a bad habit, live with integrity, pursue your calling, help others, or take a stand for something more… you’ve heard the critical voice. On many occasions, I’ve tried to grab the critical voice by the hair and smash it’s head into oblivion. I’ve tried shouting at the top of my lungs to drown out the incessant murmur. No matter how hard we try, we cannot slit the throat of the critical voice in a permanent fashion. It is relentless. But we can find respite. We can quiet that critical voice for a time. We may not be able to turn the voice off, but we can turn down the volume significantly. The next time the critical voice shows up to distract and derail you, ask yourself this simple question. “What if I am already enough?” At first you may get a response telling you that isn’t true. But stay with the question. Let your imagination wander free. “What if I am enough? What would I do then? How would I move forward? What would I do next? What if I don’t have to earn my worth?” If you ask yourself this question and stay with it for five solid minutes, you will set your brain on a course of answering that question for a portion of your day. That’s how your brain works. You ask it a question and it will begin to try to answer it on a subconscious level. This simple exercise will create space within you to pursue those things that you know will cause you to grow. The critical voice shows up because on some level we’re afraid of being uncomfortable. It’s positive intent is to protect us. To keep us from pain. And the pursuit of growth always requires a level of discomfort. That’s how growth works. It pushes us out of our comfort zone and causes us to expand our borders.Own Your Life Podcast is produce by Gregg Nordin. Listener question for Bradley: Could you explore keeping up momentum for change? How do I avoid feeling too satisfied too quickly, or getting overwhelmed and demotivated?Response: Often when we have gained some form of momentum for change, it has been preceded by inspiration. Something we’ve experienced has inspired us to create momentum. However, momentum never lasts. However, we can put systems into place that sustain our momentum, even when we aren’t feeling inspired. One of the most powerful systems is scheduling. I used to fight the advice to harness the power of my schedule because I was afraid I would become a slave to my schedule and lose my freedom. I couldn’t have been more wrong. One of the more transformative pieces of scheduling that I appreciate is the intentionality it brings. When I focus on what I value and I take action towards that, things in my life change… drastically. Sometimes it feels like a small change and that it’s slow. But over just a period of a few weeks, the efforts are compounded and the long term effects are exponential. So… being intentional is absolutely worth it. Here's where to start:1. Write down 5 things that you value. For example… I value connection (love, coffee with someone, hiking with someone, etc.). I value growth (podcasts, reading, classes, training, trying things and failing, trying things and succeeding). I value contribution (cooking for someone, volunteering my time, helping others).2. Then put them in order as best as possible (do I value this more than that?)3. Make sure that your top one or two values end up on your schedule every day in some fashion. When we do this we are systematically setting ourselves up to take action and live into those things we care about most. Coincidentally, we are also ensuring that we are doing things that bring life to us and others. And who couldn’t use more life and energy?Own Your Life Podcast is produced by Gregg Nordin. subscribe in itunes

Here is one of the greatest myths: “If I can just get my life straightened out, then I will be happy and successful.” There’s a lot of problems with that line of thinking, but the most important is the assumption that success will bring a sense of satisfaction. Success doesn’t equal fulfillment. How many times have you put off satisfaction until 'that thing' happens? Until you get the job? Until you get the boy/girl? Until you get the big break? You’ll never find fulfillment until you learn what you want out of life. Start there: learn what you want. After all, the best stories are the ones where everyone knows what the main character wants. Frodo wants to destroy the ring. Rocky wants to be the Heavyweight Champion. . Katniss wants to save her sister and survive. You have to know what you want. This isn’t rocket science. You know these things already. When we say ‘this has to happen before I can do that’ we lie to ourselves so we don’t feel bad for not living life on our terms.Begin living the kind of life you want to live in the midst of your frustrating circumstances. It will create an avalanche of momentum and will help to give you the energy to do the hard work required to succeed. More important, taking action now and living into your intentions will begin to fulfill you the moment you act. That energy will rise within you and transform every area of your life. It’s contagious. Before you know it, you will forget about the frustrating circumstances in your life or see the solutions before you as if you're in an IMAX.There is a way to create fulfillment in your life. But it doesn’t come from waiting. Set your intentions, write them down, and then live into them as soon as you stand up from your seat. If you aren’t sure of every intention for your life, start with one and don't let the sun go down before you've acted into that intention.Own Your Life Podcast is produced by Gregg Nordin.

The allies support them in their Hero's Journey while the enemies look to thwart their efforts. Scene 7 is Approach the Inmost Cave. This is where the hero begins to prepare for the 'big' change that is coming. Lots of training happens during this time. Training that opens the eyes of the hero and helps them to grow in order to overcome. This leads us to the 'Ordeal', Scene 8. The hero attempts a huge change in their story here and tries something they have never tried before. From this point forward, something will die. No matter how precious this 'thing' is, it must die in order for the hero to move forward and make it back having mastered their journey. Scene 9 is the Reward. The consequences of going through the ordeal are dealt with and the hero really begins to believe they might have what it takes.Act 3, Scene 10 moves us back to the 'Ordinary World' as the hero finds their Road Back. This is a time of major rededication to the change. At this point the hero can refuse the call again, but they will be stuck in the 'Special World' until they commit in full force. Scene 11 is the Resurrection. It is the final attempt at a big change and this is usually the climax of the story. The hero is triumphant in their own life and they know that they have mastered what is needed in order to help others. Which brings us to the final stage, Scene 12, Return with the Elixir. They have realized that they aren't on this journey simply for themselves, but to share with others what they have learned and how they might help those around them. They have final mastery over the 'problem' and are willing and compelled to share with those in need.

Episode 20 - A New and Powerful Way to Think About Resolutions

I used to hate to make goals and resolutions for a new year. I had gotten so used to failing to reach my goals and resolutions that I stopped doing them. I hated the idea of goals because it felt like having a goal and writing it down was the most concrete way to determine that I was a failure once I couldn't reach my goal. I dreaded making resolutions because even the process made me feel like a complete and total failure. Until I did this one thing. I learned how to align my goals with what I truly wanted in soul and spirit. Once I learned to cast off the expectations of others and my misplaced desires, I was able to come up with goals that I truly wanted. Instead of feeling like I didn't have the motivation or wondering if there was something wrong with me... I asked 3 questions. Do I really want the goals and resolutions I came up with. Are they truly aligned with my soul? What do I truly want? What are the actions I need to take to achieve what I truly want? Once I aligned my purpose, desires and intentions, everything flowed more freely.Own Your Life Podcast is produced by Gregg Nordin. Why You Need to Embrace Change and How to do It  subscribe in itunes
