We prep ourselves for so many challenging conversations, whether asking for a raise, delivering a tough performance review, asking for more budget, or even debating a political issue as if we're going to war. We brace for the confrontation. That puts us in a really unhelpful place to have true connection and conversation - and that just intensifies the misunderstanding and animosity with no helpful outcome. But there's a way out of this cycle. And woo boy! I clicked instantly with today's guest and I know you will, too. Today, Justin shares a very personal story about his trip back to Ghana to confront his absent father and how he changed the conversation following his own 5 pillars to bridge the divide. We also discuss how to practice conversational receptiveness, and how to avoid the dotted line dilemma and the illusion of asymmetric insights which both hinder meaningful engagements with those we don't see eye-to-eye with. Justin also unpacks actionable ways to have better conversations and cultivate curiosity through the Power of 3 Questioning module. This episode is brought to you by Strong Coffee Company, Legacy, and LMNT. Justin Jones-Fosu is here to explore the art of respectfully disagreeing and maintaining our humanity amidst ideological differences. Justin emphasizes the importance of valuing and dignifying individuals regardless of their beliefs or backgrounds. Prepare to discover strategies for fostering healthy collaboration over unhealthy competition and the significance of heart-driven work in difficult conversations. Justin shares his five pillars of respectful disagreement, offering practical examples and exercises to apply in various settings, making this a must-listen for anyone seeking to navigate our divided world with grace and respect. We also tackle the concept of "disrespectful agreement," where individuals agree with others to avoid conflict, often leading to internal resentment and missed opportunities for genuine connection. Through real-life examples, such as a wife agreeing to preserve her husband's self-esteem or an employee aiming for a promotion, we highlight the importance of recognizing and addressing these tendencies. Practical advice is also provided on how to ensure every interaction leaves all parties feeling valued, and a personal story about managing contentious conversations underscores the importance of empathy and mutual respect in communication. Additionally, we delve into the transformative power of collaboration over competition, sharing an engaging exercise that highlights the benefits of supportive environments. Reflecting on a late-night ride along with police officers, we discuss the multifaceted role they play and the importance of cultivating respectful relationships despite challenges. Finally, we explore the power of respectful interactions in planting seeds of change and the value of being present in the moment. Listen in as we bring you insights from Justin's latest book, "I Respectfully Disagree: How to Have Difficult Conversations in a Divided World," and learn how to move "Ever Forward" with purpose and understanding. Kelly L. Campbell inspires responsibility in leaders across the globe. In an enlightening conversation with speaker and author Justin Jones-Fosu, Phil Gerbyshak delved into the themes and insights from Justin's latest book, I Respectfully Disagree: How to Have Difficult Conversations in a Divided World. The book serves as a timely manual for navigating the complexities of dialogue in our often polarized society. During the discussion, Justin shared several key points that underscore the importance of respectful disagreement and the pursuit of meaningfulness over mere happiness in our interactions.Justin began by explaining his unique definition of happiness: "I define happiness as actually meaningfulness. There are certain things in our lives that may not bring a smile or a great sense of excitement but are worth it because we realize the power of what we're doing." This perspective sets the tone for his approach to engaging in difficult conversations, emphasizing that the value lies not in the immediate gratification but in the meaningful outcomes of our efforts. When asked about the essence of respectful disagreement, Justin outlined the subtleties that distinguish it from disrespectful exchanges: "In our research, we initially set out to help people move from disrespectful disagreement — which often involves name-calling — to respectful disagreement, which values the humanity of people." He stressed the importance of still honoring humanity, even when ideologies clash, suggesting that "I can vitally disagree with your ideology and yet still passionately pursue your humanity."One of the novel concepts Justin introduces in his book is the idea of "disrespectful agreement," which occurs when people superficially agree in the moment but privately dissent or fail to express their true feelings due to power differentials or societal expectations. This form of agreement can be just as damaging as disrespectful disagreement because it undermines genuine understanding and respect.Justin also critiqued the notion of minimal respect, using a playful disagreement with Aretha Franklin's famous line from her song "Respect": "In our society, we don't need just a little bit of respect; we need a whole lot of it. It's not about a little bit of respect right now; it's about a whole lot of it."Another poignant insight from Justin revolved around the concept that "How you see is what you get." He explained, "It's not about what you see; it's how you see. How you engage with the person, how you think of the person, dramatically influences the interaction." He highlighted a 1968 study where teachers treated students they believed were more gifted differently, which significantly affected those students' performance, illustrating how perceptions can alter realities. To cultivate the kind of self-awareness and perspective needed for respectful disagreement, Justin suggests challenging one's own views and continuously learning: "Put yourself in positions of learning constantly... Challenge your perspective as the first pillar of bridging divides."Phil and Justin's conversation not only highlighted the vital strategies for fostering respectful discourse but also showcased the deep need for a shift in how we approach disagreements in every sphere of our lives—from personal relationships to professional environments. As the book I Respectfully Disagree rolls out, it invites readers to embark on a journey of transformation, learning to engage in disagreements not just respectfully but meaningfully, ultimately cultivating a more understanding and cohesive society. Imagine that sinking feeling when you realize you may have to let someone go from your team. It's one of the most difficult situations a manager faces. In most cases, the manager has been feeling this tugging going on for a while but has put it off, hoping that things would improve. But at some point they have to face the inevitable. What's worse, if they were the one that hired this employee, they may also be struggling with guilt, feeling at-fault for how the situation turned out. In this episode, Ramona provides guidance on how to approach the process of letting someone go with clarity and compassion. She brings up key questions to ask yourself to assess if termination is warranted and introduces you to the AMO framework to help identify gaps that may be hindering the employee's performance. Even if termination is the ultimate outcome, there are ways that it can be done with clarity and compassion for everyone involved, including the remaining team members. If you've been grappling with an underperforming employee or want to prepare for when (not if!) this situation will arise for you, then you must tune in to this episode. Check it out here. When it comes to politics these days you can be sure there are LOTS of divisive conversations going on. It's not expected that we'll all agree on the important topics, but come on everybody - can't we at least learn how to respectfully disagree? Before you argue with, block, curse out or cut off individuals due to their political views, learn how to respectfully disagree and build bridges instead of barriers. We need to challenge our own perspective because we all think that we're right, I guess, until we realize maybe we're not 100%, right. That's the message Justin Jones-Fosu is shouting from the rooftops in his upcoming book “I Respectfully Disagree: How to Have Difficult Conversations in a Divided World”. Justin is international speaker and the founder of Work. Meaningful. He shares some great advice on how to handle extreme political conversations. We had a much-needed conversation about this topic live on my radio show and Justin pointed out, “It's been bad for a long time, but it's with the rise of media and everybody having a voice and platform that It's gotten really bad. Even in workplaces, three out of four people say that their management can handle, should handle conflict better.” “But just think about anecdotally, as we see online, as people talk to each other, there's these two things that are happening.” “One of, we see a respectful disagreement, disrespectful disagreement. But Debbie, there's also an interesting phenomenon we found in our studies, is this other thing called ‘disrespectful agreement'. “And I see it in a lot of the audiences and corporations I go in, is that people are in front of your face, they're like, oh Debbie, I think that music was amazing. And then behind the scenes, they're talking to the producer, like, why would you even play that?”” “And that's one of the things that's also causing disrespectful discriminates as well, is because people are passively, or what the new generation is calling gaslighting others.” I couldn't agree more with Justin that people need to try harder to build bridges to people rather than barriers from them. He shares some good suggestions about how we all can start to go about doing that better. “I think the foundation for us lies in the statement I've been making for about the last decade is that we can vehemently disagree with someone's ideology and yet still passionately pursue their humanity. That's the starting point. Because oftentimes we consistently attach ideology with identity. And so I'll start with challenging perspective because I think that speaks to what we do. I mean, it starts before any disagreement happens. It's the posture, the position that we put ourselves in. “ Justin Shared a Practical Example: “One of the things I started to challenge myself to do is this thing called Circles of Grace, where it's the thing that my mom taught me. My mom took us to events that we didn't know a lot about and that we also disagreed with. And so when you constantly are putting yourself in positions of learning and hearing other people's perspectives, so every six months I go to events, experiences, or I engage with people that I either don't know a lot about or that I disagree with. And that's helped me to consistently challenge my perspective and learn.” I'm glad I took the time to chat with Justin. Besides being an author Justin Jones- Fosu is also a full-time dad-e, and social entrepreneur. He speaks 50-60 times a year for professionals, corporations, organizations, and associations. His clients include some of the biggest names in The Fortune 500 to the best spelled names in Fourth Grades across the country he says. LOL I also really like that he's fun. Like me, he often uses humor to get a serious message across. I think it would be meaningful for you to take a few minutes to listen to this podcast of our live conversation from The Debbie Nigro Show. Might save some of your relationships!

With host retail coach Wendy Batten https://wendybatten.com/172/ When circumstances are out of our control, what you do next is critical. As the CEOs of our businesses, we have to be prepared for when things go sideways and problems arise in our shops and in our lives. Today on the podcast, I'm sharing a proven method that works for me the CTFAR model and how it can change your problem solving process and get you better results. It's not a new emethod and originally created by Brooke Castillo. It has worked for me in so many situations in my business and in my personal life - it will work for you as well. What is the CTFAR Model? C: Circumstances - What actually happened that was out of our control T: Thoughts - How we think about the circumstance F: Feelings - How we feel because of the thoughts A: Actions - What we do (or don't do) in response to our feelings R: Results - What we get in the end The purpose of the CTFAR model is to reframe your thinking to help you solve problems. By being aware of what is happening and choosing how you think about it, you can change the outcome. We need to always be showing up with a positive, solution-oriented mindset for ourselves, our team, and our customers. When we do this, we will see positive results. “Our actions will drive our results but it starts with our thoughts.” - Wendy Batten Related podcasts we think you'll like: Episode 109: Money Mindset, Abundance, & Bad Ideas with Guest Expert Emily King Episode 147: How to Reframe Your Mindset on Competition Episode 151: How to Have Difficult Conversations with Good Staff About your host, Wendy Batten In case we haven't met yet, I'm Wendy, a small business coach and founder of the Retailer's Inner Circle, where I help other independent shop owners learn how to gain the right business skillsets to see more profits, paychecks, and joy as they navigate running their retail business. Kenny discusses the power of self-talk and its importance in leadership. He explains that the words we use to talk to ourselves have a huge impact on our mental, physical, and health wellbeing. He encourages people to acknowledge how frequently they talk to themselves and to use those words to create positive dialogue, and that self-talk can help us make better decisions and live healthier lives. Kenny suggests that people should internalize the idea that difficult conversations are merely conversations for clarity and not something to be feared, emphasize the importance of self-talk and suggest that people should look at their self-talk in the moment, as well as in the past and future. Kenny also mention how they used to have low self-esteem, but have since reprogrammed their brain and are now focused on physical fitness, spirituality, and mental health. He is discussing the importance of self-talk and how it affects emotions and behaviour. He talks about how he was a different person six years ago than he is today and encourages the audience to challenge themselves. He explains that self-talk can create emotions such as anxiety, fear, and stress, but also can create self-confidence, peace, and happiness. He encourages the audience to be mindful of their self-talk and to use it to create positive emotions and behaviours. We're back! In Volume VII of What Matters Most, close friends Jacqui Maguire, a clinical psychologist, and Antonia Prebble, actor and presenter, get to the bottom of what the mental load is, how this dynamic occurs, what we can do to change our own behaviours and how we can have those tricky conversations with our partners to create a more equal distribution of tasks in our homes. It's a conversation that is sure to stir up some thoughts (particularly for women – yip, research shows that 90% of females feel the carry the burden of the mental load), but hopefully it will give you the tools to examine what is happening in your household and how to go about making changes. If, like Antonia mentioned, you found Jacqui's tips helpful on how to have a conversation with your partner about the mental load, you might also enjoy Volume II of What Matters Most: How to Have Difficult Conversations. The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics
In today's conversation, I am joined by Kwame Christian, who I believe is our first 3-peat guest! (Though Dr. Marco Palma from the Human Behavior Lab at Texas A&M has technically been on the show three times, once was part of a panel when we launched the certificate program so I am going to say that Kwame is in a class all his own (for so many reasons)). Kwame was also my first guest on the first-ever live show of The Brainy Business on Fireside earlier this week. If you haven't heard of Fireside yet or checked out the show there, and if you don't yet have enough Kwame (I know I never will!) check out the replay within these show notes. Fireside is a new platform co-founded by Mark Cuban where I was recently invited to do a show. It lets the audience come up on stage to participate and ask questions. It is really cool and I'm going to be testing it out for a bit to see if this is a good permanent addition to the content you get from The Brainy Business. So if you want to stay around and have a chance to come behind the scenes and be part of the show, please come join us there. And of course, listen in on this episode as Kwame and I talk all about his new book, How to Have Difficult Conversations about Race. Show Notes: [00:40] In today's conversation, I am joined by Kwame Christian, who I believe is the first guest to be here on the show three times AND my first ever guest on the live show on Fireside. [01:42] Fireside is a new platform co-founded by Mark Cuban where I was recently invited to do a show. It lets the audience come up on stage to participate and ask questions. [03:20] Today we are talking all about Kwame's new book, How to Have Difficult Conversations about Race, which officially comes out on September 13th. [05:18] Kwame shares about himself and his background. Kwame is an attorney, does work in negotiation, and has a background in psychology. [07:27] Kwame shares his journey in writing his new book. He wants to be where the toughest conversations are. [08:47] He is not here to teach people how to think about race. He is here to offer guidance on how to talk about race. [11:11] We are all biased in different types of ways and we need to think more broadly about bias. People need to have a more empowered stance when it comes to bias. [12:32] Bias is real and it is going to play a role so why don't we take the time to calibrate and manage the role of bias in our favor? It is a strategic tool we can leverage to our advantage. [14:22] We are biased against bias. [15:18] Let's live with the fact that we have biases and learn to manage them. [17:22] If we are not making any mistakes that might be an indication of us not interacting with people that see the world differently than us. [18:11] We have to be outcome-oriented in our conversations. We need to know our goal and then reverse engineer a strategy for that goal. [20:04] We need to recognize that we need to be aware of the biases but not fear them. Biases make us human. [23:07] Kwame shares a true story from his book about a man named Daryl that tries to convert KKK members. He has converted over 200 members. [25:51] We have more persuasive power than we realize. [28:27] In these conversations we are not going to try to win. [30:02] His new book can be used by anybody that has any goal in a difficult conversation. [31:54] Anything that does not violate a physical law is negotiable. We can negotiate anything, we just need the right mindset. [34:05] Conflict is an opportunity. These difficult conversations provide us with opportunities. We just need to be curious and listen. [36:26] Melina shares her closing thoughts. [37:29] Not every battle is yours to fight. Choose where you can have or want impact and go full force, one strategic decision at a time. Thanks for listening. Don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Android. One of the hardest things to deal with as a boss is the difficult conversations you must have day in and day out. As a CEO/Founder, your time is money and how you allocate your time will affect your bottom line which means you don't have time to stew over difficult conversations. We've all been there. You have an employee that is underperforming and it is affecting the entire team. You have a client that is upset and treating your employees unfairly. None of these situations are fun, but they will most likely happen to you if you are a boss! I have had all of the scenarios happen to me and I have learned the more I avoid the conversations, the more problematic and larger they get. Here are 5 Ways to Have Difficult Conversations so everyone ends up on top!

***Want one piece of business strategy delivered daily to your inbox?*** Subscribe here: https://www.shethinksbigcoaching.com/subscribe-main-list Many CPAs struggle with people-pleasing – saying yes, when they might prefer to say no. As a habit, it can result in all kinds of undesired outcomes, and because it comes with some pretty sneaky rewards, it can be hard to give up. Here today to talk with me about this problem is my guest, Sara Bybee Fisk. Sarah is the creator of a 16-week course called Stop People-Pleasing and a master at simplifying the complex. Sara talks about how people-pleasing is showing up in our business, and what we can do to stop it. Highlights: — “Never say yes in the moment. Always give yourself some kind of buffer.” — “We say no, or we give the answer that we know we don't want to give, because we don't feel like we actually have a choice.” — “People-pleasing is the way we are taught from the time we're very little to get our needs met. It's normal that we do it.” — “We are programmed to avoid discomfort, to seek pleasure and to conserve energy. And stopping people-pleasing violates every single one of those.” — “There's no opt out button for discipline.” Download Sara's guide on How to Have Difficult Conversations https://www.sarafisk.coach/ Connect with Sara: Website: https://www.sarafisk.coach/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SaraFiskCoaching Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sarafiskcoach/

How to Exchange Your Anxious Heart for a Peaceful Heart Podcast #415 Anxiety, or overwhelm, can make your spirit feel crushed, and your life feel stuck. I know, I've lived that life. In this podcast episode we are going to pull back the curtain on what living with anxiety looks like and talk about some effective ways to help alleviate and manage the anxiety on a daily basis that has worked for me and for my students. God invites us into a life of peace - and He can take our anxious heart and exchange it for one that is peace-filled. Let's talk about how we can step into that together in this conversation. Get the full show notes at www.trishblackwell.com/415 In this episode of The Confidence Podcast, we'll be talking about: My anxiety story - something I've never really shared beforeThe differences between what anxiety says and what peace says5 effective daily habits that have helped my anxiety REVIEW OF THE WEEK: StrengthSeeker, 5 stars Trish - I truly feel that God led me to discover your podcast and your virtual friendship! In June I was struggling in a 25-year marriage to the father of our four kids. I couldn’t find the strength to make a change that could deeply impact our whole family. I also had a boss who had started marginalizing and demeaning me daily in my already stressful career. Between work and home life I felt like I was getting beaten down 24/7. It was exhausting and it was breaking me. Even thought I have strong spiritual life and great group of Christian friends I needed a cheerleader. I needed confidence. I "randomly" discovered your coaching and it was exactly what I needed. The first episode I listened to was "How to Have Difficult Conversations" and I was hooked. I was able to work with my husband to decide that divorce was the best thing for our whole family. We're in the thick of the process now and your weekly pep talks are getting me through. I love the way you blend faith-based statements with real life relevance. I especially like the way you provide a number of tips or steps to accent your coaching message. For busy women like me I find myself replaying those tips constantly. When I wake up on Tuesdays I’m always more energized - it's Trish Day! I listen to you on my commute into work and it sets the course for the rest of the week. Thank you for cheering me on! You are amazing. BONUS PODCAST EPISODES - EXCLUSIVELY AVAILABLE FOR OUR PATRONS. Nothing is that important.” —Natalie Goldberg “Anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows, but only empties today of its strength.” —Charles Spurgeon “Anxiety is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind. If encouraged, it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained.” —Arthur Somers Roche “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was ending, he turned into a butterfly.” —Anonymous proverb “Do what you can, with what you’ve got, where you are.” —Theodore Roosevelt “Anxiety’s like a rocking chair.
