Elevating the Future: A look into Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and the opportunities for women with Elan Head

In 2018, I was invited to be a speaker at a conference in the Midwest. Before I got on the stage to present my keynote, the session before me was talking about a new concept that I remember briefly hearing about as a student at Embry-Riddle, Advance Air Mobility (AAM). The speaker mentioned how AAM is the future of aviation, and that it will revolutionize air travel as we know it. AAM is known as the development, integration, and utilization of new airborne transportation systems, typically involving electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, drones, and other innovative aerial vehicles. These systems are designed to operate in urban, suburban, and rural environments. Since that conference in 2018, so many developments have transpired in this sector. Key Features of the AAM sectors include; eVTOLs: These are aircraft that can take off and land vertically like a helicopter but transition to forward flight like a plane, predominantly powered by electric propulsion.Urban Air Mobility (UAM): A subset of AAM focusing on urban environments. UAM seeks to alleviate ground traffic congestion by taking advantage of the airspace above cities.Decentralized Infrastructure: Instead of large central airports, AAM emphasizes smaller vertiports or landing pads scattered throughout urban and suburban areas.Autonomous Operations: While initial operations may have human pilots, the goal for many AAM solutions is to eventually operate autonomously, which will require advanced autonomous flight systems and robust air traffic management solutions. The AAM sector on a global scale was valued at $8.2 billion in 2022. It is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 20% by 2032 with a valuation to reach about $68.1 billion. Furthermore, investments in AAM have reached $4.8 billion in 2021, with new innovative companies launching each year in pursuit of the next successful eVTOL to hit the market. Specifically, there are over 200 companies globally in the race to develop eVTOL aircraft. The primary driver in the AAM sector is the Urban Air Mobility market which is projected to rise from 3.8 billion to 38.5 billion by 2030. In terms of women in this sector, McKinsey & Company shared on its blog this year how women are advancing in Future Air Mobility (FAM). Here are a few key points the blog shared. Sustainable aviation saw the biggest improvement in gender diversity, with the number of women and nonbinary people increasing from 13 percent to 18 percent.Other segments, including manned advanced air mobility/eVTOL vehicles and small drones, showed smaller gains.Companies that develop supersonic and hypersonic technology regressed, with the number of women and nonbinary people falling from 23 percent to 20 percent, although the small sample size means that the departure of a few senior leaders could sway the numbers in a meaningful way.Among regions, North America has the most diverse leadership teams in both gender (20 percent female or nonbinary) and ethnic diversity—defined as the non-majority group in a company's home country (18 percent).Technical roles have seen the biggest increase in diversity for both genders (going from 5 percent to 14 percent female or nonbinary) and people from ethnic minorities (going from 12 percent to 16 percent).Despite this progress, women and nonbinary people remain significantly underrepresented in technical roles at FAM companies, as they are in many other industries. Our special guest who will launch us into season five of the AVIATE with Shaesta podcast is Elan Head, a familiar voice in AAM. Elan is an award-winning journalist specializing in aviation and technology. Head currently serves as the Senior Editor at The Air Current and continues to be a respected journalist in the industry covering several developments and breaking news in AAM. Elan is a Commercial Helicopter Pilot and an FAA Gold Seal flight instructor with helicopter and instrument helicopter ratings. Elan joins us to share her unexpected start in aviation and how she turned her passion for flight and journalism into a career that she truly enjoys.

Since retiring, Darcy has found his passion volunteering at a local elementary school where he works with first graders. Encouraged and mentored by the school's teachers, Darcy wrote this book which is based on a real search and rescue case from his flying career.  Of course, I love that Darcy chose to make the pilot a woman, and to anthropomorphize the ‘Dolphin' helicopter as ‘Dolph'. Dolph is the narrator of this action-packed story, and Gwen is a capable and confident pilot-in-command, directing her crew, Mike, the Flight Mechanic, and Sam, the Rescue Swimmer. They all work together to rescue the fishermen from their sinking vessel in the storm while facilitating discussions about teamwork, fear, courage, cooperation, and trust.*Check out the new Literary Aviatrix Website for books, interviews, news, blogs, and the Writers' Room! In April, the Aviatrix Book Club discussed Three-Eight Charlie: 1st Woman to Fly Solo Around the World – 1964, by Jerrie Mock. I was thrilled by the enthusiasm about the story from our members, and very pleasantly surprised by how well the book was written. It truly has broad appeal and will entertain audiences from avgeeks to young adults to Better Homes and Gardens fans. I am so grateful to publisher Wendy Hollinger for bringing the book back into print, and for championing Jerrie's story and accomplishments.Jerrie passed away in 2014, but my three guests in this episode each spent time with her while she was still with us. Wendy, through the course of republishing the book became close with Jerrie, as did author Nancy Roe Pimm, whose book The Jerrie Mock Story is a middle-grade biography about her. Finally, Shaesta Waiz, the previous record holder for youngest woman to fly solo around the world (before Zara Rutherford in 2022), was mentored for her trip by Jerrie. Stay tuned until the end of our conversation when Wendy has a special surprise for Shaesta.  Thank you to all three of these ladies for the work they do to carry on Jerrie's legacy to educate and inspire young people through her accomplishments and their own efforts. You can find Jerrie's plane ‘Charlie' in a new display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum on the Mall in D.C.  Here is the blurb from the book: Three-Eight Charlie is the story of Jerrie Mock's record-setting flight as the first woman to solo around the world in 1964 in a single-engine Cessna 180. It's an insightful and well written account that includes intrigue and heroism, and discusses the cultures and geography of the world at the time. This book is a great read for aviation enthusiasts as well as young people, and anyone with big dreams. Three-Eight Charlie was originally published in 1970, but is out of print and difficult to find. Phoenix Graphix Publishing Services was pleased to make a new, color edition available for the 50th anniversary of Jerrie's flight, and has now created this black and white paperback. Our guest today, who will conclude season two of the AVIATE with Shaesta podcast, is Colonel  Nicole Malachowski. At age 5, during a time when women were not permitted to fly for the military, Nicole knew that someday, she would fly a fighter jet. Finishing fourth in her class, Nicole graduated from pilot training at Columbus AFB, Mississippi, and was selected for the only F-15E slot allotted to her class. Nicole has served in a few operational tours and went into combat for the United States Air Force. In 2005, Nicole made history by becoming the first woman to fly for the Thunderbirds, completing 140 performances, and inspiring a generation of women aviators.  In my conversation, I ask Nicole about her remarkable career and how she managed her mental health along the way. We also discuss Nicole's physical health, especially after she was suddenly diagnosed with a tick-borne illness, which changed her life and career trajectory.

If you're listening to this podcast, I'm guessing you've heard of Shaesta Waiz. But on the off chance you haven't, she's the youngest woman to fly around the world. Solo. Only 6 WOMEN (of any age) have ever done it before her, in the history of aviation. But she didn't do it for glory, she did it to help children all over the world become interested in STEM concepts, and in aviation as a career.  She is the first Afghan woman to earn a civilian pilot's license.  She's the first in her family to attend college. She's the founder and President of Dreams Soar Inc. A nonprofit she founded still in her 20s to help women all over the world land careers in STEM related fields. Her organization provides inspiration, outreach, and scholarships for young women with dreams of careers in fields involving Science Technology Engineering, and Math. From her birth in an Afghan refugee camp, she was groomed for a traditional life as a mother and founder of a large family, more than the founder of a non-profit with global reach. But she decided to break the mold and travel the world encouraging young women to do the same. Although she does still love to cook...

Shaesta Waiz flew around the world in a small aircraft. With a message. If you could circumnavigate the globe in an aircraft with one message, what would it be?  This is a fascinating and unfolding story about rising from adversity and discovering what is possible. Flying is closely linked to freedom and opportunity. This week we talk to Shaesta Waiz, the first certified civilian female pilot from Afghanistan who's global flight earned her a record the youngest woman to fly solo around the world in a single engine aircraft.  Shaesta has a  burning desire to help others like her – underserved as a youth - to work hard, never give up and follow their dreams.  As an Earthrounder (a unique and rare breed of pilot, setting themselves apart from the more conventional modes of air travel, possessing one unifying achievement: piloting a light aircraft around the entire world), Shaesta's story is layered with grit and determination alongside a deep desire to serve. This is  conversation about overcoming obstacles, creating opportunities, and pursuing your passions. Shaesta shares some of the realities and perceived limitations, as well as sense of responsibility to her immigrant family and sisters and especially women in Afghanistan. Hear about Shaesta's journey, her grace and commitment to serve, and how she uses her platform to inspire and encourage young women around the world to seek education in STEM and pursue their passions.  You will be inspired by this conversation for reasons you may predict and others you will be surprised by. What is so compelling and fascinating about gaining new perspectives and reaching beyond the pull of gravity? Enjoy and thank you Shaesta!Topics Include: Growing up as an Afghan refugee in the USGender roles and what she saw possible as a young girlWhat sparked a love of flyingWhy and how she planned her trip around the worldHighs, lows, endurance and liceChallenges and doubts, trusting intuitionMental health and aviation Working towards a goalImportance of STEM education and access for women  And other topics...Shaesta Waiz was born in Afghanistan at a refugee camp during the Soviet-Afghan War in 1987. Her family came to the United States and grew up in California. While FLY, GIRL, FLY is a beautiful picture book for young readers, this interview is for everyone. Shaesta Waiz, an Afghan refugee, became the youngest woman to fly solo around the world at thirty years old. That mission, with 32 outreach events around the world, was focused on inspiring young people in aviation and STEM and to show them that if you dream it, you can do it. In the interview we talk about Shaesta's childhood, growing up in two worlds as an Afghan refugee in the United States, her solo trip, nineteen year old Zara Rutherford, who is on her voyage to break Shaesta's record, the Aviate with Shaesta podcast, and the current situation in Afghanistan. Nancy Roe Pimm is the author of eight books for young readers, including THE JERRIE MOCK STORY: THE FIRST WOMAN TO FLY SOLO AROUND THE WORLD . . . and there are more to come. We're so grateful to Nancy for her curiosity, enthusiasm, and writing craft to tell the stories of these inspiring women in aviation. And special mention to the artist, Alexandra Bye, whose gorgeous illustrations in this book provide a perfect visual interpretation of the text on the page to spark the imaginations of young readers.

My name is Zara Rutherford, I am 19 years old. I have just completed my A-Levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Economics, and Physics, and hope to go to university to study computer science/computer engineering. I have been flying for as long as I can remember and one of my biggest dreams (as well as flying around the world!) is becoming an astronaut. In August 2021 I left Belgium heading West, flying solo around the world flying in a very small plane. If I succeed, I will be youngest woman ever to fly solo around the world as well as the youngest person to fly solo around the world in a microlight. I was born into a family of aviators and was lucky to have great role models in my parents and grandparents. I want to build on this heritage and inspire others. My aim is to encourage girls and young women to pursue their dreams and promote aviation and STEM-related careers (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) for them. Only 5% of commercial pilots and 15% of computer scientists are women. In both areas – aviation and STEM – the gender gap is huge. In fact it is a dream gap. Our dreams are formed in early childhood. Children are being told fairy tales like the Sleeping Beauty, where the prince travels with style and courage through difficult and dangerous places. The princess is beautiful, sleeps and waits for the prince to rescue her. Boys learn from history books, street signs and statues, that they can be scientists, astronauts or CEO's. They are much more likely to receive science-related toys and are being encouraged to be bold. Girls get gifted dolls and are expected to be charming, beautiful and sweet. Upbringings shape our dreams. The youngest man to have flown solo around the world, Travis Ludlow, was 18 years old. The youngest woman, Shaesta Waiz was 30 at the time of her flight. With my flight, I hope to reduce this gap from 11 years to 11 months. I hold FAA and UK private pilot licenses plus Slovakian and French microlight licenses. I have been a member of the Honourable Company of Air Pilots since 2019. Check out Zara on FlyZolo, Instagram, and TikTok --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/toby-usnik/support
